I was at that game and the entire Salem football team hustled to our end of the field to join in a prayer with their football brothers from another school. If there were any Buddhist, Hindus, or Muslims on either team, it didn’t slow them down in joining in fellowship with each other after a hard fought battle on the football field. I think we are blessed to have such fine groups of young men representing our respective communities. There are real problems around the world that need to be addressed, people voluntarily praying is not one of them.3 points

If a player gets up and quickly gives the first down signal I'll talk to him and tell him to not do it again. If it's an extended signal it's likely a flag. If he does it again, it's likely a flag. Show enthusiasm and celebrate with your teammates. Signaling a first down is visible for everyone, calls attention to yourself and could be considered taunting because you are showing up your opponent by visibly telling them you got the first down. I don't remember if I have ever flagged a player for doing this because it's not common and if it did happen it was brief and they complied with the warning to not do it again. Preventative officiating helps keep the game flowing. Most fans would be amazed at how much conversation goes on between officials and players and how officials and coaches work together to manage sportsmanship issues. Coaches often tell us in pre-game to let them know if we are having issues with players and they will take care of it. Very rarely have I found they don't follow through with that offer.3 points

We've definitely seen an uptick in midfield group praying. I understand it is not obligatory and I don't believe it should be a freedom of speech argument. I'm simply saying that we do live in an ever more pluralistic country. Involving children in clearly publicized group worship could make other children, who haven't yet decided on their faith (or not), feel like they are being out cast if they don't participate. Having lived in places where my religion was the majority and then living in a place where some people are forced to hide their religion, including children, gives one a wider perspective on how public worship can change and influence the actions of the minority. My views are my own and I understand they likely aren't in-line with most in North Spencer or the Pocket of Indiana. Back to football, the PAC really got pigeon holed with this new alignment. Three teams from the same conference which have been ranked in the Top 10 should be able to take home at least two sectional titles (yes Memorial, you're my favorite Evansville school, where I would want to attend, wish you success in 4A, but it's a shame the Tigers, Titans, Patriots, Raiders, and Alices won't play for at least 3 years... In football at least. Basketball and wrestling, I'll take my Patriots this year.)2 points

Oh, I caught it. Thought it was appropriate, too. Irish deserve everything they get after that performance. Had a bye week to get ready and healthy, and they absolute didn’t show up.2 points

just want to add only this little tidbit.... LCC was playing in 2a with 2 D1 guys Cronk and Anthrop, who have been very productive B10 players in their careers and a couple other really good high school players that may have went on to play college ball, not sure. They were not you typical 1a team playing in 2a due to success factor. When you have D1 dudes in 1a or 2a you are going to win games, then you surround them with more than capable quality HS football players, you are going to win championships. That was Pioneer last few years and that was LCC in the Oshea era.2 points

This is a great thread relating to the resurgence of the IU football program. You really have to take it there? Sorry, not gonna bite. Congrats to Tom Allen and what he's done with IU's program. I never felt like he was the answer, but I'm glad he's proving me wrong. Can you blame me though? His teams at Ben Davis were less than mediocre by BD standards. He's certainly found the formula at the D1 ranks though. And 80 freshmen and sophomores? Looking forward to how good this team could be over the next couple of years.1 point

The Bears have many problems. I take no delight (well...) in their loss, but rather emphasize with the kicker. The Bears have as much luck to get Cam Newton as they do Aaron Rodgers.1 point

Alexandria is already looking ahead to basketball season. Friday nights game was just bad. The kids looked checked out and very lethargic. @GV5 is right in saying that they have the talent but the coaching is just terrible. Until a change is made the Tigers will continue to under achieve. Elwood on the other hand has some things to look forward to. I thought the quarterback was a pretty solid kid for a freshman and his future looks bright hopefully they can get some positive energy around the program and get more kids out.1 point

Cass has some biggins up front. Their backs are athletic & extremely physical. They refused to be tackled vs Pioneer. Pneumatic sledgehammers1 point

That's correct, Texas schools are playing for conference (district) championships. To address GOLDRUSH's point the difference is in Indiana the conference championship is for bragging rights only (IIRC); in Texas your finishing place determines your seeding in playoffs, so there's more on the line and teams are more motivated to win the conf./dist. championship or place as high as possible.1 point

It was ugly! I really didn't see this Irish team as a potential playoff team but I never expected them to be blown out the way they were last night! Maybe it's time for BK to move on. He just doesn't seem to be able to get them to play at their best week in and week out. Also, Book is a below average QB. Last night he was abysmal.1 point

I like your chances too. If your defense continues to play well, I see no reason why you shouldn't be in the sectional final. Best of luck to the Warriors and good health!1 point

If you are asking about the first post it is not in the By-Laws. It is not the rule now. He is asking what we think of making it a rule.1 point

See I look at a game in the same way. Trying to explain to a coach why I'm not throwing a flag on something that is behind the play or on the other side of the field that is not a safety issue is always fun. My whole point is that technically that could be deemed a hold, it was there. The OPI or not OPI is dependent on the angle we see it from. Sullivan should not have let them drive almost 70 yards in 20 seconds. The best thing is that the player is fine. Good luck to the Alices on the rest of their season.1 point

Bottom line, regardless of what the call should or should have not been..this was good karma for Lincoln. So many judgement calls over the years past 15 years that haven’t gone the Alices way...this one did. Hopefully, this will turn into an opportunity they can capitalize on...and can build towards a very bright future with some talented youth on the way.1 point

Yes. Heightened emotions. It got pretty ugly after that TD between family and fans. But the kid is ok.1 point

Ian Book is still the weak link on this Irish team....still VERY hesitant under pressure, and even gets nervous when there is no real pressure around him. Nothing has changed in his play from week 1.1 point

The proper technique is to see the potential hold and then look at the QB. If the ball is gone, or he’s in his throwing motion, hold the flag. I know it’s a hard concept for non-officials to get their heads around. But that’s why we get paid the big bucks. 😆1 point

I think that's just us Catholics ... last week a couple of parishioners were outside the confessional betting a round of drinks on whose list of sins would draw the bigger penance from the priest. In case you were wondering, I won. 😄1 point

Ohio state is a lock I think. Chase young is ridiculous. Never seen someone dominate the badgers like he did today. Simply outmatched. clemson just has to win out. Simple i think LSU will take the SEC spot and Alabama will be the 4 seed with only a loss to LSU1 point

I really hope you would need more evidence than a 3 phone videos spliced together. If I was involved as a player, fan, or coach I might see things differently. I see an outside receiver running a post, and an inside receiver running a corner. The DB playing man coverage (with outside leverage) gets off balance and falls into the path of the outside receiver. That is why contact occurs. The end result is bad because the DB’s head probably hits the receiver’s knee. Unfortunate but not a penalty1 point

I would favor starting a week earlier and allowing teams to pick a bye week. I believe Kentucky employees this or a similar system.1 point

No. A football coach shouldn't have to worry about a player getting hurt at wrestling practice. One season at a time.1 point

I agree they should be given a week between seasons. Do they really have to wait until the state championships have been played even if their team lost in the first round of the playoffs? That makes no sense to me. Seems to me like it should be up to the school's AD but I can't fathom an AD that would allow a kid to practice with next season's team regardless of the sport. ADs should insist on the kids only practicing with the current season's sport. I have no problem with lifting weights or conditioning with next season's team as long as the current season's coach allows it.1 point

Sitting at home on a rainy Saturday and watching a Chicago Catholic League game between Marist and Loyola Academy. Loyola is a heavy favorite, but Marist leads by one at half. All the broadcast team can talk about is how Marist is playing with desperation because they need to win to make the playoffs. Too bad we will never be able to generate that kind of excitement for a regular season game in Indiana.-1 points

No reason for a prayer even led by a student athlete. Did they also recite a Hindu or Buddhist proverb? Jewish quote from the Torah? Islamic prayer from the Quran? Native American ritual song? Really zero reason to exclude non-Christians from a State sporting event. I'll side with the agnostics.-1 points
