Hope all is great with you, as well....but....daaaaaaamn, what a crazy page....at least recently. Yes, an interesting start for many of us....though not unexpected on my end (okay....there is Brebeuf...but, after watching them, the "preppies" are legit....much as I hate to admit). But Heck, that's why I enjoy it. I wont ever love the kids or coaches any less. That said, I have been wanting to see East play Chatard for the better part of 14 years. Regardless how this year turns out, I am hoping both schools keep each other on the schedule because, in my opinion, when these two teams are at their best, this is a game real Indiana HS football fans truly want to watch. Seriously, these two teams SHOULD play each other every year. From Chatard's perspective (speaking for myself), I'd love to see this game as much of a fixture as the Cathedral or Roncalli game on the schedule. East has an incredible tradition of excellence. He had two great throws for TD's. What was the total for yards after catch? The first TD was a 16 yarder with the TE running for the last 25 to get in. The screen pass was 55 yards, right? Something like that. The swing pass in the red zone was even a one yard pass with the RB doing a fantastic job of making guys miss to get 10 more yards for the TD. Just a few examples that come to mind. That said, I NEVER said he was the problem though. Play calling on both sides of the ball changed dramatically once they put 38 points on the board. They played to not lose the game, and got way too conservative in play calling. Playing prevent defense for over a quarter on the road and letting FSU do whatever they wanted was frustrating. The blitz combos and pass rush were non existent until the 3rd down play in OT. Even then guys looked lost in the secondary at times. As aggressive as FSU was on defense, the screen was perfect, but only called twice??? Teams like Alabama and Clemson from previous years keep the foot on the gas and bury teams in those spots.

The classes don't matter all that much directly. Sagarin is, for the most part, class-agnostic in its formulation, although size, etc. does play a part indirectly ... i.e., all things relatively equal a 6A school should wear down a 3A school over four quarters. Realize that Linton has played a pair of teams, Sullivan and Southridge, with 86.x and 85.x ratings respectively. Outside of Washington, those are the strongest schedule teams in 3A so far. Monrovia's sitting at 53.x. For Luers, the opponent strengths are Carroll at 77.x and Wayne at 79.x. and Homestead at 65.x. The Wayne strength is fairly decent for 4A, but the others are average at best for the respective class. Toss in that there's the "in-breeding" factor of the SAC for scheduling ... they play a "self-contained" league schedule for their nine games ... and that's going to skew some of the Sagarin numbers that you see for Luers and other SAC teams.

Coach Hart and his staff are CLASS ACTS! I am sure that they will represent IN well, and WIN!!!

I'm assuming no less than "17 D1 players" since they are (reportedly) even better than last year. I wonder if they will also receive " 5 offers from army and navy" that "decided to go to marion (sic)" just like last year. With that, you can anticipate that if they lose to another team there will be "5" or "7" or "11" starters who didn't play (for a variety of reasons that only seem to exclude a mass kidnapping from ancient aliens)....regardless, the number of missing starters in any loss seems to be variable. But aside from that, they are the best team in the State of Indiana. I think I've covered it generally.

What? I want kids to enjoy their senior year of high school. Those memories will outlast their playing career. I also want to make sure they are mature enough to handle what awaits them on a big college campus. Selfish? Hardly.

Wait until we’ve seen a month worth of action and release the first college football poll the first Monday in October. Offseason perceptions and projections of teams (which is nearly impossible after the year that was 2020) play too large of a role in these “rankings.” Case in point: How many times do we have to see Oklahoma trot out a JV defense before we realize they are not an elite outfit?

If Memorial gets lucky and wins this weekend I’ve been told that the west side nut club members will ban them from the fall festival and if any of the players or fans dare try to show up that they’ll be sprayed with ski through a fire hose…this is just what I heard

Scrimmages aren't games. There wasn't one play run in that scrimmage by Hamilton Heights using their starting line up. If Eastbrook looks at a scrimmage as a victory, they really need to get out more. You'll figure it out.

……far be it from me to discredit the “best team in the state with 17 D1 players”. I think they are the better than “Indinia” University this year. They certainly have more D1 players.

Aside from Sagarin not caring about Class, SAC and SIAC rankings are going to be worthless (except as to the conference internals) until after Week 1 of playoffs. Don’t we beat this same horse to death every years as regards SAC and SIAC (as of last year?) rankings? That said, the SIAC guys “got it” pretty quickly. I think about 1/2 of them are barristers, though. Jeez…imagine a place where 1/2 the people are attorneys…

As a former youth coach ... just retired after 18 seasons ... I have typically built my teams around running the ball as priority one. I was explaining to a kid the other day about boxing and telling him how it is certainly possible to knock a guy out with the first punch, but that tends to be rare. Instead, good boxers will use the body shots ... the traditional run game ... to either open up / set up the head shot, wear down an opponent, or both. I always had my lines practice the run against a 6-man defensive line to really work the ability to work the run. Yes, we had a passing game as well, but ultimately it wasn't unboxed until we mastered the run. It also made it easier to get more kids involved/active in the game at that youth level. If it's about the spread, when you are dealing with 10 year-olds, there are only a handful of fast kids who can throw and catch. With the run game, we needed 11 bodies doing work every play and so, I could get the kids who weren't yet fast or quick or good with their hands or who had weak arms or were less than graceful or the big guys involved in the game and keep them interested until their bodies caught up with their interest in the game.

My takeaways from this game…., 1. This new offensive line is going to be a work in progress. Blake fisher sprained knee so he’ll miss some time. His replacement last night Carmody did not look very good 2. how many plays did the defense get into the backfield yet FSU still gained positive yards 3. it’s only 1 game but former DC Clark Lea may have been the best at making in game adjustments. Not sure if it was injury related but CL wouldn’t have been running a 3 man front if it was getting gashed by the opposing run game. Marcus Freeman has some work to do (may have been short handed up front) as this wasn’t a the start on defense we were hoping for 4. Jack coan played well. Disagree with whoever said he should be benched. A running game and better o line play will help. My only issue was a few sacks he took 5. Kyle Hamilton is good at football unless he cheats and watches the qb eyes 6. How can you not root for FSU QB McKenzie mIlton Go Irish. A win is a win but that was way too close for comfort. Watching games and ND opponents Thurs-Sat i thought the Irish had a really good shot to run the table and go 12-0. Don’t see that happening now. But who knows it’s a long season and I’m glad college football is back

Yes, speedy would be pretty accurate. Now that has been put to the test against higher competition no doubt. But they have guys who can set the edge. And their secondary is probably one of the most experienced units on the team. However, we've struggled with some young guys in the front 7 so far this year. But one thing you can count on with a Coach Salters' (he was a middle linebacker back in the day) squad is a hard nosed, hot pursuit defense, and the unit you will see improve the most year in and out. The problem the past two years has been the amount of time the defense is on the field and just wearing out.

For me, curious more than anything this might be a team better than Columbus North and I think Coach Hart said last week on the radio show that they also have a number of D1 players. this should be a big time game and depending on the results, we will know how good GS really is….we have seen a lot but this is another big test for the team

Just throwing out there that Castle doesn’t have the ability to schedule non-conference games because the SIAC expanded to ten teams and they all play each other.

I don’t like the word “soft,” since to me it implies less than 100% effort, and I wouldn’t accuse someone of that just because of the style of their offense. But there is no doubt that the game has changed dramatically. It’s now much more of a scheme, matchup, one on one game than ever before. Now, it’s all about getting the ball to players in space, so they can make a big play. Reminds me a lot of MLB these days, where record numbers of homers are being hit … along with record numbers of strikeouts. Both football and baseball now live by the big play. I halfway think that the reason is our video game, internet, text message, social media culture simply lacks the patience, and the attention span, to be effective at doing it the old way.

You were like me, and some of the students that I have taught before. I had all my graduation requirements met by December 2005, but BNL (and my mother) would not let me graduate early. All that did was punish my ambition.

This is actually a fairly common scenario, and the tip-off is that it was a QB sneak. By not coming set before the ball was snapped, the QB gets a rolling start … which is an unfair advantage. This is a foul. The more interesting question from the officials’ standpoint is: exactly what foul is it? The talk about stopping for 1 second is significant, but perhaps not for the reason you think. The QB was, in effect, in motion at the snap. His motion was illegal because it was forward. Even if he actually came to a brief stop, but not for a second, he would be considered to still be in motion. So, the proper call is illegal motion, not illegal shift, a live ball foul at the snap. Play continues until the down is over. But … There is also a school of thought out there with the philosophy that we don’t want to run unnecessary plays or replay downs. So, if you can call something a pre-snap dead ball foul — like false start — that is preferable. Proponents of that philosophy — including the rebel group’s leading proponent @JustRules — might call this a false start, on the theory that the QB’s movement was the “start” of the play, but the ball had not been snapped.
