  1. I’m at the Lake County Athletic Officials football meeting. 45 officials here ... all wearing masks. But @DannEllenwooddidn’t show. I so wanted to get a picture of him wearing a mask and post it on the GID. 😆

  4. I do not like the name change. The Rebel name was perfect since Pope John XXIII (Angelo Roncalli) was known as the Rebel Pope. It was a perfect name voted on by the students and staff in 1969. Frontrunners are Rams and Lions. Lions because Roncalli was the Nuncio of Venice (symbolized by the Lion of St. Mark) before becoming Pope John XXIII. His papal coat of arms includes the Lion of St. Mark.

  5. Have a great week to all the teams practicing and conditioning this week. It looks like teams are allowed to wear helmets/shoulder pads and get some work done. As Coach Nowlin likes to say - get better!

  8. An Indiana high school football coach checks in, concerned. (I am withholding his name at his request.) “I found your tour of the Vikings facility both informative and eye opening. It really scares me to think about what we’re doing at the high school level. To see what teams like the Vikings are doing to protect their players is impressive. High schools, with no money, and not near the space, are not getting the same treatment. In your article you talk about a meeting room with 172 seats and only 42 will fill those seats at a time. In high school football, we have anywhere from 35 to 75 kids on a team, jammed into classrooms, makeshift meeting rooms, etc to watch film and meet. It makes no sense to me at all. The NFL has the money to test almost daily. We don’t, at least the schools I know about, have the ability to test at all. We ask a series of questions and if the player answers ‘yes’ to any of the questions, the player is sent home. The kids who LOVE football understand this and will always answer ‘no’ to avoid missing practice time. I’m really concerned. “I know I’m in the minority when it comes to high school coaches. Most want to play, but the risk doesn’t equal the reward. High schools, like a lot of the colleges you hear about, need the football revenue so things continue ‘as normal.’ I see it with my own eyes, but it’s really said when adults put in charge of protecting and doing what’s best for our kids are more concerned about the almighty dollar. I love football. I love the life lessons. I’m just afraid we’re teaching the absolute wrong lesson this season.” What a wonderful, real, stark and important email this is. Thanks for putting into words what so many coaches around the country who are being told there will be a football season must be thinking. We’re teaching the absolute wrong lesson this season. What a powerful message you are sending, Coach. I truly hope that some high school administrators in states around the country, particularly states where outbreaks are increasing, read this and think to themselves: “Let’s wait a minute here, and see if football in a pandemic, without the safeguards professional teams have, is really sensible.” I read this article by Peter King every Monday, ever since it was called Monday Morning Quarterback about the the NFL. I saw this and thought it was interesting, especially considering all the debate on here about this topic.

  10. I enjoyed reading this, an actual opinion piece about HS FOOTBALL. How refreshing. When I look at those teams listed, to me it is Cathedral now and 5 years, 10 years..... Some teams will have better years thanks others, but body of work will say they will always be the toughest out in the PP world. I believe the rest is like 2a,bc,d. They will always have competitive kids and teams and quality coaching. Brebeuf decision was head scratching, by all accounts Coach Roessler was very good coach and well respected across the state and Indy metro area.

  22. There will be lots of solutions district by district. To do this right it there isn't a one size fits all solution. Football can continue in Indiana without 100% of schools participating. There is just too much data from around the world that clearly show opening up schools won't change the trajectory of hospitalization or death rates. It also appears most schools will have a virtual option. I like that fact that if there are folks that truly fear for the safety of their child they also will have options. I say that in full view of the sun that there are places in this country that won't have a lot of options.

  26. Gotta love it. They wait until now to make masks mandatory, yet there will be no punishment if you are caught not wearing one. Wearing masks should have been mandatory from the beginning. They go 4 months before deciding this is the correct move. People are STILL going to ignore it even though it is one of the methods recommended to stop the spread of the disease. And why should they wear one if there are no consequences if they don't. I see this as contributing to more fights, etc in every day society. Indiana could have been a national leader in this months ago, but apparently someone was worried about hurting someone's feelings or taking someone's decision away from them. by making this mandatory. You reap what you sow. There is not going to be a season. . There could have been, but not now. Too late to close the barn door once the horse has escaped. One human life is too many to lose. They speak of a few hundred deaths being acceptable. How tragic and how shallow.

  27. And the death rate of any disease never tells the whole story. It’s like you either die, or recover like it never happened. Not at all true. There are a significant number of lingering, perhaps permanent, effects. Respiratory. neurological, cardiac, renal ... and likely some we don’t know yet, since this is so new.

  29. Travel sports are spreading more of this. And they have been being played well before the IHSAA came back open. I am also somebody who believes all the showcase events and camps should not be happening. By looking at pictures on social media (Twitter) it looks like zero social distancing is happening. Kids from all of the state are represented at this. It makes the IHSAA look foolish for all of their rules that are to be followed with these events taking place.

  30. In my opinion every school district should be able to make the best choice for the student body they have. Recently, there was a rumor in the city I work in that my school district was "canceling or shutting down" the season. We had a team meeting addressing the issue and clarifying what our plan was moving forward. We had multiple players express their passion about the necessity to have football this fall or any sports for that matter. Some of them, I talked with privately broke down crying explaining their situations they are dealing with in life right now. The reality of it is, where I coach and I'm sure there are more coaches in this boat, most of my young men have been working part time jobs to help make ends meet for their families or became the caregiver to their younger siblings. The question of should we return to football or not isn't all about the game itself but what it allows our student athletes to get away from and in many cases it is their home lives. I can tell you about many unfathomable stories some of my young men have gone through during this time of "quarantining." If we continue to push this virtue signaling and pretend that this virus is worse than, mental, emotional and physical abuse or even neglect by some of our young men's families. Then we are going to have far worse problems than just this hatred and bickering we are all privileged to take part in on this forum. What may be a problem to you, isn't even a thought in our student athletes mind. If you don't have any young men like I just described then please just try to understand why it is that important that we get back to sports this fall.

  33. I am the former "rebel03".....still come in and around these parts 3-4 times a week. I graduated in '04 and played on the '02 and '03 championship teams. I was involved in the heyday of the "Horde"! Man, those were great days...... Couple thoughts On the name change- I am not "happy" about it, but we also live in a completely world. It was not uncommon in the 90s for people to have the confederate flag at school flying from their cars. That was nipped in the butt in the 90s, and was outlawed. Admin said if that were to happen anymore, the student would be expelled, no questions asked. I believe one student fell to this punishment, and this was no longer a problem. As you have read, the term came from a famous pope who rebelled against church leaders for the greater good. But, again, we are in different times now. I have requested to be a part of the alumni side to be on the committee to find a new nickname. You have to take the good out of the bad and move on. Current state of the program- My brother played quarterback in the early 90s for the Rebels and made the leap to go coach with Coach Rodenburg. TW is back in the saddle doing some part time coaching with the offensive line. Brian Lauck is back, one of the best Rebel alums turned coach in the history of the school. Numerous other alumni have come out of the woodwork to follow Rodenburg, including Jason Werner as well as others. Rodenburg literally did not bring one person with him to be an assistant. His background in Cincy Catholic football knew that someone that is a great leader will get the pack to follow him, and it is clear that the pack came to help him out. This is the first time I have been excited to watch them play in a long time. The iron fist is back, and ready to get into gear. The kids are buying in, and have a solid nucleus back. If anyone can do this, it will be Coach Rodenburg and the alumni there to help him out. It is an exciting time, and I am happy for the program as a whole. There is a long way to go to get back to where they were, and maybe they never will, but I have hope that the right people are at least in place to get them where they need to go. My son is a 4th grader at Saint Barnabas, I want him to grow up on Friday nights before high school watching what I was able to watch in the 90s. It is a great thing when done right!

  37. Logan Murfin for Gibson Southern he finished last year among the other WRs with.... 28 receptions (4th on team) 502 yards (3rd on team) 6 touchdowns (3rd on team) very solid year but he had 3 very talented Seniors to battle with for targets and was productive in the reps he did get rotating in. Now that they have graduated, he seems primed to take over as one of the top targets. We all know about Brady Allen and how good of a QB he is, so with easily 130+ targets becoming vacant. He is a senior so it’s more/less a later breakout but he had a very productive year last year none the less and should improve greatly upon his performance. who knows though. Gibson Southern could find themselves throwing a lot more this year with the new schedule. In the game against Southport they passed the ball 30 times. I could see the titans throwing it more than 300 times this year without the need for a deeper playoff run. should they make it as far as LOS I think 400-500 pass attempts is well within range...which is A LOT for a high school team. So with this might see some of the other kids get a lot of volume and breakout. But I like this Murfin kid.

  39. In general, nothing; however, it is my understanding from a couple of posts that I've seen that while the original term "rebels" was divorced from the idea of segregationists and the Confederacy and the school went to lengths to discourage that association, it found its way into some of the support at one time. I think there are still a couple of posters on the site that may have more info on the history side.
