  2. No disrespect to the Knights, but picking them over Snider after what the Panthers did to Warren last week is pure lunacy.

  3. This is the post I made last year, explaining the uniqueness of the Notre Dame - Navy rivalry. This Saturday, Notre Dame and Navy open the 2023 season by playing in Dublin, Ireland. That, in itself, is pretty cool. But I wouldn’t want the real significance of this game to be overlooked amidst the amazing setting, the special uniforms, and all the other neat stuff that will surround this Saturday’s game. At a time when college football is consumed by debate over NIL, the transfer portal, and schools playing musical chairs with conferences, this game is a throwback. It’s all about honor, loyalty and commitment. So, when you hear somebody remark that there’s no reason Notre Dame should be taking up a spot on their schedule every year with Navy, you’ll know what to say.

  4. I think I’d consider any Mid-State Conference schools and Franklin Central as well. Pretty much any 4A school or bigger (sans Center Grove and private/parochial schools) south of I-465, north of US 50, and with Bloomington and Columbus as the west and east boundaries. That’s a nice rectangle encompassing 16 eligible schools.

  6. This week the Irish take on the Midshipmen. The series goes back a long way — they’ve played every year since 1927 except for the 2019 COVID season — and is very lopsided in terms of the W-L records. Every year at this time you hear people criticize ND for playing Navy, lamenting the fact that a win over Navy does nothing to enhance national rankings, playoff chances, etc. Those aware of the history, however, know that this game is about something far more important. It’s all about honor, commitment, and a debt that can never be fully repaid. When WW II rolled around, the University enrollment suffered so greatly that they were close to closing the doors. In 1942 the Navy established a large V-7 training program at Notre Dame. Over the next few years, the Navy paid ND the equivalent of almost $8 million in today’s dollars, plus a daily stipend for each of the thousands of midshipmen who went through training there. This kept the University afloat until the war ended. The special relationship between Notre Dame and the Navy continues to this day, with Our Lady’s University producing more commissioned Naval officers than any other institution, aside from the Naval Academy. The debt of honor we owe the Navy can never be fully repaid. We repay an installment every year by affording Navy the national spotlight that comes with playing Notre Dame. For that reason, Notre Dame will play Navy in football as long as Navy wants to play. If you’ve never been to this game, you really should treat yourself. I have been to half a dozen over the years, and it’s still my favorite Notre Dame experience. It is most definitely not like other college football games. If you’re interested in reading about the long relationship between Notre Dame and the Navy, here’s a pretty good article. https://www.si.com/college/notredame/football/notre-dame-football-navy-rivalry-a-bond-forged-in-blood-2022. Next year, Notre Dame and Navy open the college football season … in Dublin, Ireland. How cool will that be?

  8. Which, of course, I never said or intimated. At least in this post. 😉 My point was that this specific game was unique in that it’s played for different reasons than most games — including games in which the Irish play — these days.

  11. Long time reader. First time posting but this football princess is ready to hang with the boys with WRC insights. BC at Seeger-- unfortunately I'm taking the Patriots, but I think BC will test them. For personal reasons the only other week I'll end up picking the Pats is against Attica because they're the only team in the WRC I despise more. Crawfordsville at FC-- Call me crazy, but I'm taking Herbie and the 'Stangs. The HOFer has built his entire career on rebuilding programs and FC in year 2 is no exception. Last week was not FC's best but I think Acton will come out with guns blazing. NV at Paris, IL-- haven't looked hard into this one, but NV's defense will need to step up this week. PH at WV-- I'll take the Vikes. Riverton Parke at Carroll Flora- I think it'll be closer than people expect, but I'm going with Carroll. South Newton at Covington-- I know nothing about the Fig Newtons... so we'll go with Covington and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Tri County at Attica- Not much to elaborate on with this one. Tri County takes the W.

  13. Avon @ Ben Davis: Agree completely on all accounts Fishers @ Pike: I was at the Zionsville/Pike game and actually thought Pike was the better team that night. They just couldn't close the door and Zionsville never stopped fighting. Pike has a mobile QB who can cause damage when he gets out of the pocket. His arm isn't the greatest but he has a few WR's that can beat DB's for a ball. PIke was on the verge of taking a 28-17 lead midway through the 4th quarter when a long TD pass was called backed due to a blatantly obvious OL downfield when their QB scrambled around the pocket. I'll take Fishers by 10. HSE @ NC: Agreed. Going to be ugly Homestead @ Nobleville: I didn't watch the Homestead/Carmel game. I did watch a majority of the Noblesville/Mt. Vernon game up until Noblesville took a monumental lead in the 2nd half. It looks like Mt. Vernon scored a bunch of garbage time points. My one gripe with the Millers the past 2 seasons is their refusal to throw the ball. The kid they had at QB last Friday can definately throw it. And the Millers have an athletic 6'3 TE/WR as well as Aiden Brewer who caught a long TD pass against Mt. Vernon. Brewer is also a TE/WR. The 6'2 JR already has offers from Toledo, Ball State, Indiana, Western Michigan and another school. Noblesville did abodon the Power T for some spread formations a few time. I say all of that to say I hope they will finally incorporate the passing game into their offense. They have a QB who can throw and at least 2 capable receivers. One game at a time, but interested in seeing how Noblesville works the passing game into their offense. I'll take the Millers by 6. Cathedral @ Brownsburg: Easily the game of the week in the State. You nailed it on the head that Brownsburg seems to win the early season big games. I haven't seen either team play this year. I'll go with O'Neill and the Irish to win a close one by 3. Roncalli @ Franklin Central: The Jayson West era in Franklin Township has started out at 8-13 with no defining wins. This is the perfect opportunity to get a statement win against a neighborhood rival. I'll buy what you're selling and agree on a 3 point Flashes W. Westfield @ Lawrence Central: The Will Patterson experience is 10-23 through 3 years and 1 game. Similiar to West, Patterson appears to have LC heading in the right direction. I like their chances of competing with Ben Davis for the top spot in the MIC this year. But, I'm also thouroughly impressed by Westfields MOV over New Pal. Perhaps the talent has decreased in New Pal to the point they can no longer hang with 6A teams. That remains to be seen. I'll take Westfield by 13. Zionsville @ Lebanon: This is a nice little rivalry game that will continue to develop as Whitestown booms and about one quarter of the town is in Zionsville's school district with the remaining portions going to Lebanon. Just looking at scores I'm expecting it to be a massive blowout considered Lebanon was blanked by Pendleton Heights. Zionsville definately has some weaknesses that need tightened up before HCC play starts. Their offense was very sluggish last week as the QB play was shaky and they couldn't get Eugene Hilton involved in the passing game. Hilton opened the game up with a 90 yard kickoff return for a TD and he didn't see the ball again until late in the 4th with a long reception that put Zionsville in position for the go ahead TD. The Zionsville D Line is very big and agile. They have decent depth and were rotating guys in and out. The LB'ers struggled though whenever Pike got past the line of scrimmage. Much of this has nothing to do with the game against Lebanon. Just rambling on about my observations from last Friday nigh. I'll take Zionsville by 28.

  14. I think moving kickoff time back 60 minutes is the best option. I can tell you it's brutal on the field and in the stands that last couple hours of daylight in the earlier parts of the season down here in TX -- and we're used to these temps! Been 103-110 (with heat index 110-120) most of the summer. It's got to be even more difficult playing/spectating in temps like those if you're NOT used to it. Regarding time zone, I have always thought Indiana is too far west to BOTH be in eastern time and have daylight savings, or even to be in eastern w/o DST. Indiana should be on central. DST is a discussion for another thread probably.

  17. I love the HHC but I feel like things have changed since it formed 50 years ago. Madison was getting smaller and had to leave because they couldn’t keep up. I fear Jennings County is getting that way too. Columbus East fit in well for the longest time but I feel like we now fit in better with the cities and Indy suburban schools in south-central Indiana. And with the way Seymour is growing, I feel like they’re on their way as well. I’m iffy on BNL. They’re shrinking quickly. Not sure if they should stay or go. Problem is, they’re on the outskirts of HHC territory and losing Seymour would hurt them.

  20. I wish all the talking heads would stop talking about how the running back position is “undervalued,” when what they really mean is that is “low” valued. The entire reason for this is simply basic economics. Teams can get a running back on a rookie deal at a low price, use him for 4 years, and then replace his production with another guy on his rookie deal. The response points to a guy like Taylor, who contributes far above what the average young running back does. Taylor’s base salary now is $4.3 million. He’s reportedly looking for a deal in the $11 to $12 million per year range. The average salary for a running back in the NFL is about $1.8 million. How many players do you think the Colts could get for the money Taylor wants? Sure they’re not going to get another Taylor — there aren’t many of those around. But think of it as buying a car. You have to choose between a $100K Mercedes or a $50K Ford. You’d rather have the Mercedes. It has a bunch of things the Ford doesn’t. But then you think about what you could do with that extra $50K if you went with the Ford. It will still get you where you need to go, albeit at a more basic level. And if it winds up in the shop for some reason, you’ve still got the $50K you didn’t spend on it to arrange alternate transportation.

  21. Still think the Vaughn Dunbar, Brock Rohrbacher team was so good. That championship game with Carmel in 1986 was epic. Both teams fell to the championship squads the year before as their only losses that season. 2004 Snider was very good as well though.

  23. Harrison and McCutcheon will most likely be added to Sagamore with TW, Danville, and Lebanon. Also, hearing other possibilities are West Lafayette, Greenwood, and Southport. Not a big fan of Greenwood and/or Southport, but both school are a bad fit for current conferences.

  24. If there was a South Central Conference 2.0 created, I’d like to see these five schools in it: Columbus North Columbus East Bloomington North Bloomington South Seymour I would then like to see one or both of these schools in it as well to make it a six or seven team conference: Southport Bedford North Lawrence

  26. Saw this one in a game video I was reviewing: 2nd and 10 at the B 40. Team A runs a sweep all the way down to the B 15. However, there’s a flag at the B 35 where A6 was called for holding. Crew enforced the 10 yd. penalty from the previous spot, making it 2nd & 20 from midfield. Should have been enforced from the spot of the foul, making it 2nd and 15 from the A 45. Obviously, the crew was confused by the new rule that provides for previous spot enforcement in certain circumstances that would previously have been enforced as spot fouls. SMH

  29. If you say so. I would say acclimating to the high temperatures by staying well hydrated all week (especially all day Thursday and early Friday) and conditioning. Versus having cooler temperatures all week and hitting high humidity on Friday that you haven't prepared for. Then again what do I know, I am just typing a message on a message board.

  31. CYO Field was grass at the beginning of the season, but not much was left at the end of the season. With Cathedral, Scecina and Sacred Heart all playing home games on that field, and Cadet football on Sundays, it got used up pretty badly. Varsity games were played on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in those days. Field Turf is not as hot as the original Astro-Turf and some of the artificial "grass" that was on fields in the early days. Field Turf is quite "grasslike" nowadays in fact.

  39. Predictions aside, you bypassed a thread for two months, offered zero insight/analysis of the topic for that same time period then wanna stop by and tell everyone you weren’t surprised that the #4 team in 6A lost by 22 on its home field, lol. Don’t be scared to sign your name to something before coming on here and implying that anyone surprised by this result is a clown. Temp’s Top 25 coming this afternoon after the CG game. I just hope I spelled everything correctly.

  41. I know the Kings are new, but I think it is common knowledge that this is the Zebras year! Loaded!!!! I have heard about this class all the way down here in Walton. Maybe the Braves will at least make you guys work up a sweat. I see the Kings a middle of the conference team with the players they lost from last year. As a fan it will be fun to go to some new fields.
