If you're going to dive into the Facebook morass, I have a suggestion. Make sure to write specific rules and then enforce them. Some of the other Facebook groups dedicated to high school sports are sad messes.

Does it really matter that he got hurt? What is the reaction if Biddings and/or Carroll showed up to Cathedral for their senior year? There isn't a chance in hell the IHSAA is giving them immediate varsity eligibility and this board would have a 40 page thread on how Cathedral "cheats". This happens at public schools all the time and it's completely swept under the rug.

It's cool on Friday nights when people can share scores and updates. But it's kind of annoying to see random posts throughout the week from someone replying and blowing off about something with no context as to what in the heck they're talking about. Plus in the past I know there's been some very profane or explicit posts that have been autoshared from a reply. Idk, I feel like a lot of the GID faithful just post it here anyway.

I watched Combs play 2, possibly 3 times. I thought he stood out and was easy to notice. That just sounds like incompetence from Sheridan if true.

When I heard the news, I was just sick. But I’ve had some time to think about it now. Good luck to Coach Kelly. He gave Our Lady’s university a decade of his life. We got fair value for what he was paid. He and his wife became important members of the community. He is the winningest Notre Dame coach of all time. He will take his place alongside Rockne, Leahy, Parseghian, and Holtz. Most importantly, he is not leaving the cupboard bare. So, I think most ND people will wish Coach Kelly well, and move on. This is a great opportunity for ND to move into the next phase of the football program with a new coach. Luke Fickel is the name everyone is talking about. But don’t sleep on Marcus Freeman, the 1st year DC. He’s a sensational recruiter and a great defensive coach. I expect he’ll be elevated to interim HC for the bowl game. Conventional wisdom is that your first job as a head coach should not be Notre Dame. But he might be the exception..

if cupcake games are the standard, OSU has no edge over ND. I will add again, as far as the CFP Committee is concerned; OSU is only 10-1 right now. No bigger cupcake on a schedule than a team that does not even factor into your ranking. I still don't believe that playing a lower ranked team and beating them should put you in a position to leap frog another team, if both teams played last week. If the committee waited for OSU to beat Baylor this week, the case might be stronger for such a move.

Perhaps if you were an IFOA Member @Major you would have seen the HISTORY of this crew. Since you knew NOTHING about them.... A 5A State Championship Assignment, (2) 6A State Championship Games.....ranked in the Top 5 often (#1 Multiple times) ... State Finals appearances among the crew in multiple sports (at least 27 amongst the crew members). So here's my final response to your idiotic commentary/evaluation!

West Lafayette - 743 Danville - 739 Gibson Southern - 728 Tri-West - 578 In recent years the 3A/4A cutoff has fallen right around 800. If reclassification would have happened for this year, Brebeuf would have been 4A with an enrollment of 816.

The outgoing class of 2022 at Castle was dominate up until a few years ago. You have to go back to around 7th grade to find losses by the two feeder schools, undefeated and rarely scored on past that. Tilly wasn’t used to match his skill set, as was the kid before him. The rest of the SIAC has more than caught up with their respective feeder programs, Castle is not going to ascend without a massive pivot. While the rest the conference as figured out how to keep their 11 best in the field and how to put them in a position to be successful the school in Paradise continues to languish. Cheers to Bosse and Harrison for a hard fought season and to all the other schools. Best of luck next season.

I didn't really pay attention to Strickland. He did have some big plays including the safety. I take HS play with a grain of salt. I remember people saying Karlaftis looked overrated against Evansville Memorial. Speaking of Allen though, I was pleasantly surprised enough that I had to start texting Purdue friends. I was expecting to see a 6'5 QB with a very strong arm, which is what we saw. I was not expecting to see him make the type of throws he was making. Very impressive. I'm hoping Brohm has finally found at least a 3 year starter.

This if there was a Friday/Saturday only option that would be preferred. I definitely like being able to find all of the scores quickly on gamedays

I watched on TV, but it looked like everyone had really big crowds. Agreed, great way to end the season. Patrick Clacks led Andrean in receiving on Saturday. The Sophomore recently picked up his first P5 offer from Pittsburgh. I believe Andrean's QB was a Sophomore as well. The '59'ers are going to be returning some serious offensive power next year.

I thought your crew did fine. Re-reading my post I can see where you would think that. I was more calling out the person who was calling out officials by name. You and your crew have earned my respect. You have always given good insight and I appreciate that.

I think Kelly is arguably the best coach in college football. I mean, look what he's done with a bunch of smart kids! I think his biggest enemy is complacency with a contract like this. But I really don't think he'll fall down that road. His desire to be a national champion coach is really high.

If Notre Dame hires Fickell, the residents for Cincinnati will call for a civil war against South Bend. Kelly, Freeman, now Fickell?

Many, many years ago when I was also officiating college football, I went to a clinic in Los Angeles. It lasted several days, and we spent one afternoon working a UCLA scrimmage, and the next day a USC scrimmage. John Robinson was the coach at USC then. Their practice was unbelievable. I never saw so many people with $2,000 suits, designer sunglasses, $500 shoes, and weighted down with bling at a football practice before or since. It was like the Red Carpet on artificial turf.

Have to wonder if he played in the MIC what offers he would have received...same with Rory.

I don’t have much to add to @Moshiner1345’s insightful analysis of the play from an official’s standpoint. I’ll just reiterate that, regardless of how you interpret the slo mo and replay views, I would never fault that official’s judgment on a play like this, regardless of whether - with the benefit of technology - I thought it was the correct call or not.

Do you want to know how hard HS football 5 person officiating is. This play is 100% a prime example. BJ is keying/responsible for the 2 receivers at the bottom of the screen since this is a trips formation (notice how he is shaded toward those receivers). The wing at the bottom of the screen then would have the 3rd receiver in. But he's keying off the right tackle to read run or pass so he knows whether to keep his focus on that receiver or the blocking of the tackle. The official at the top of the screen is responsible for the receiver at the top of the screen, the RB on his side and the left tackle. He too is keying off the left tackle for run vs pass. This left tackle determines where his eyes need to go next. In this play. The left tackle fires out like a run, you can't see that wing's eyes but his mechanics are then to keep an eye on that tackle for holding (since it looks like a run). It's fuzzy when you can see the top wings head come onto the screen but, it looks like he is looking at the tackle at the time of the grab. The BJ is focused on the opposite side of the field, so he probably doesn't see the grab either. This is just a black hole in 5 person officiating. So when @Bobref says the crew thought the ball was just past the receiver at the time of the grab, the HL eyes got to the receiver about this time in the play and he admits he saw the grab, but the eyes were focused where they were supposed to be focused (the tackle) so when they transitioned to the receiver, the ball was probably just wizzing past the receiver. Here is what the manual says word for word: 6. Initial keys are as follows: a. B has the widest receiver on the strong side of the formation. Note: if players are “stacked” one behind the other, the player closest to the line of scrimmage is considered to be wider. b. The wing official on the strong side of the formation has the inside receiver(s) on that side. c. The wing official on the weak side of the formation has any receivers on that side. d. If the strong side of the formation has three eligible receivers (“trips”), then B takes the two widest receivers on the strong side, and the wing on the strong side takes the inside receiver. e. Wing officials always key on receivers out of the backfield who came from inside the tackles toward them. After the snap, observe your keys and read the near tackle to determine run or pass. Hold the line of scrimmage until the ball carrier crosses it. Watch the initial charge of linemen. Watch blocking on the back side on runs to the opposite side of the field.

The weekend played out about as expected... I'll start with the teams that struggled... Eastern, WRV, Clay City, and North Central each lost their opening game. Eastern will likely struggle all year. WRV lost a close one vs. North Knox. Clay City was a toss up for me... Looks like South Putnam had enough to squeeze out a win. North Central was a bigger loss than I expected, but the White/Cook backcourt is pretty good. If Northview has any type of size... this doesn't seem like a big loss. Shakamak beat a very weak Rivet team. I'm not sure it says much one way or the other about the Lakers. Bloomfield beat Owen Valley and Cloverdale. I thought the Clovers would put up a bigger fight... maybe they were missing someone. Bloomfield looks to be minus Dean and Sherrard for what could be the whole season... that would not be good for the Cardinals post season chances. North Daviess won 3 games over the weekend. The win against Loogootee was a nice victory against a sectional opponent. Evansville Day looked to be an easy win , but North Posey looked to be a close game. Linton got 2 quality wins over quality teams this weekend. Indy Metro didn't play the 6'10" Merriweather kid, but they played faster without him. Stamps was a load at 6'1" 250lbs. He scored 20 or so in the 1st half... Their PG, Omari Ferguson was a speedster. He was really tough to stay in front of in transition. They will be a tough 1A team. Park Heritage went to state last year, but the Miners handled them fairly well. Some big shots out of a few PH kids helped keep the game close, but it never seemed to feel like it would be close. One of those weird games were the score looked and felt like an 8-10 point game for the majority of the time.

CG coach Moore said right after the game that Westfield played CG tougher than any other school had during their current 28 game win streak. I'd think he knows what he's talking about.

If anything….I think this entire thing with Rory is an example of what is wrong with the recruiting process….and it also stresses the importance to other student athletes/parents/coaches of just how important these camps can be.

They will not reclassify this year. They will wait another year to get success factor and enrollment recounts aligned. I really don’t see any other way.

General Warning: Make sure you don't use IHSAA footage. They can get a little upset.

1.) I didn't see egregious players with no mouthpiece in. Are you sure your aren't over exaggerating. 2.) I will have to look into this not sure what you are refering too. 3.) So would you say it was targeting? Honestly we all had benefit of replay. On the field though in live action I would have agreed with helmet call. Sure when you do the replay it may not have been but that wasn't a benefit to the officials during the game in live action and there is no Instant Replay in HS football. 4.) You said it. My only question for you is if you feel you are so perfect and enjoy calling out officials (some by name) why aren't you a current NFL official (serious question). My personal feeling is you are a current official, you are upset your crew wasn't on the field doing a game. Therefor you are hypercritical of the crews that were selected and pointing out some errors and calling out officials by name with an axe to grind. Perhaps your crew made more errors in other games and that is the reason you were not selected for the State Championship, but perhaps not. I have no idea on that but I think your posts have been in poor taste with an axe to grind and it shows. No offense but an observation from someone who has nothing to do with officiating. @Bobrefwhile he and I haven't always agreed on everything. He is at least forthcoming and honest. @Yuccaguyclaimed not to be perfect (no crew is) but I thought they did a fantastic job. You seem to want more respect for your crew (if my hunch is correct), but you are failing miserably in gaining it if that is the case. Be humble and plug away for next year.

The IHSAA goes off of the DOE numbers, the DOE takes two counts to come up with an average. The count days are in September and February. So none of the numbers are official yet. Look for the official numbers to be out in March or April.

I would bet they would not fall into the same sectional. They would adjust the sectionals and create new ones. With Zionsville to 6A as well, there will definitely be some interesting sectionals put together this winter.

And I will admit this. It is not now, nor ever would be my position to question a coaching decision, a player's decision or otherwise. My concern is to officiate the game to the very best of my ability with 4 other guys. Then hope that nothing we did was a deciding factor in the outcome. Grover, you and I have conversed for years. It's kinda nice to be able to speak with "legacy GID members" in a respectful manner about a game that we all love! Westfield is a heck of a program. Coach Gilbert is a damn machine with his ability to mold them into his image: Tough, hard-nosed and pressing! As for Center Grove....well, I would think that those who anticipating them to lose relevance may be sadly disappointed. Coach Moore seems to "re-load", not re-construct, IMO. As a FW/Northern Indiana guy...I'd like to thank those in the HCC/MIC for allowing us to "make an appearance" in the tournament each year (by rule). 😕

I was pleased to see that the officiating was pretty good for all 6 games. Not perfect, there will always be a few misses. But officiating was a non-factor this weekend, just the way we like it.

Many of you have probably never heard of Freddy Toth (GS RT #70) This kid was amazing all season and particularly in the playoffs against some of the best DEs 3A had to offer. Have to include this quote from his Mom on a Facebook post. “When Freddy was just little, he explained his position to me like this— “Mom, if Brady is behind my butt then I’m doing good.” He did good!!! ❤️“
