I think you are giving the people who came up with the travel rule too much credit for “intelligent design.”

State baseball tourney just concluded - 3 of the 4 state championships won by private schools...ridiculous. 6 of the 8 teams in the state finals were privates, yet private schools compose a little less than 20% of the TOTAL high schools in Indiana. Privates are playing with a different deck of cards. If you think otherwise, please continue to keep your heads buried.

I believe initially it was a 4 year cycle for Success Factor, but then it was changed to the 2 year cycle. I believe the 2 year cycle is better. Imagine a small 1A school that isn't private school has an amazing class of athletes that win a sectional (1pt), regional (2pts) then State title (4pts). That's 7 points now accumulated. But then they graduate. The 4 classes behind them have to play up a class their entire high school careers because of a once in a lifetime run from their small community. 2 year cycle has been a better change in my opinion.

I've been a coach at small school for the past 10+years here I can say one thing about PP every time we have played them, they have had bigger numbers and bigger staff's, which I believe that second part matters more. With modern football, the ability of a bigger staff can make practice more individualize for all positions on a team/JV as well. Most of the time bigger staff means more stipend money for them which it's hard to get people to come out and coach for a small school team for free these days, especially someone who knows what they are doing and not just a parent who will be around for 2 years then leave once their kid graduates. It's even harder to find teachers who coach with the shortage on top of all this. Now that being said here at South Putnam we will never shy away from PP, because that's not how we are built but majority of 1A programs in Indiana don't have a chance to stand up to them simply because of these reasons here. Most smalls schools through the decades had to wait for that once in a generation group of kids to come through but I will say it is easier to get that one extra lineman or one extra WR when there are no recruiting rules for you at PP to fill the gaps of needs, not saying any of them still do this or not that we play just in general those are the rules for PP, I.E. none.

Not every p/p has a good football program regardless the percentage of students competing in extracurriculars. That's why the success factor, not multiplier, makes more sense. Park Tudor has always been one of the largest 1A schools and on a per capita basis is the wealthiest school in Indiana with the exception of maybe Culver Military and they haven't won a sectional since 2005. Hell, until last year, they hadn't had a winning season in over a decade. By @temptationmetrics, Park Tudor should be running away with state titles on the gridiron given their high enrollment number and extremely low SES numbers. Silly to just start multiplying non-existent students to a school's enrollment because of perceived advantages that may not actually take place. The thought of Park Tudor playing 3A football because they have a bunch of students who play golf, lacrosse, and tennis is laughable. Let's let Park Tudor have some success in 1A and bump them up in the event of it happening rather than just adding nearly 400 mythical students to their enrollment. Seems practical, no?

I actually don't 100% disagree with you when it comes to the fact that some schools probably should look at contracting their football programs, or at least look to moving to the new 6-man/8-man football (can't remember which it is) that is coming to Indiana. However - it's just a little tired at this point. Serious question, how many threads have you started concerning this topic? Like, we get it. Those who will agree with you, agree. Those who do not, disagree. I don't think anyone's mind is getting changed at this point because it's been discussed ad nauseum.

I was going to add: I guess my question would be: “If playing schools in places like Cleveland, Chicago, St. Louis, Columbus, etc., does not result in an unfair competitive advantage, why would anyone think that playing schools from Pittsburgh, or Alabama, Georgia, California, or Florida does provide such an advantage?”

Keep the Mercy Rule as it is. Perhaps NEVER stopping the clock for any reason (other than injuries and time-outs) during the 2nd half should be the agreement?

OK, we gotta give folks time to at least get home before having to run back to the stadium to pick up the kids. We had gotten used to dropping the kids off at the football game, then going to eat, then going to pick the kids up after dinner. I recall the first time that Jeff hit that mercy rule with someone. We'd just ordered and the kids texted and said, "Second half just started and they said something about a running clock." My wife asked what that was and I said, "We've got 24 minutes to have Applebee's cook it, we eat it, and we get back to Jeff before the kids start lighting up the chat with 'Where are you?" If we go to first half, we won't have time to make it through the Taco Bell line on some games. 🙂

I don't think it's all that silly or illogical. I've often thought the same thing ... that there's something more than an arbitrary 300-mile rule and that there was something else tied to it. If the discussions concerning haves/have-nots WITHIN conferences, regions, classes, holds then an open-travel policy would seem to exacerbate that for the tournament. I wonder, if you plot that 300-mile radius, what does it provide in the way of average-/large-metro access. I did a quick set of 300-mile radius circles using Evanasville, Gary, Terre Haute, Ft. Wayne, and Lawrenceburg as surrogates for end-points of the state. Here's the link to the tool if you want to play around with it further: https://www.mapdevelopers.com/draw-circle-tool.php. It tends to provide relative access to the Midwest. One other interesting thing that I noticed in this is that it tends to be, with the exception of Kentucky/Tennessee and some parts of Missouri, focused on Big Ten country. Of course, it would be more questioning to have something that excluded Kentucky being on the border, but 300-miles seems to be somewhat conducive to showcasing in front of the heart of the Big Ten ... at least geographically ... without making it overtly obvious ... and just biting the bullet that a couple of SEC states might get a look. Might be as silly/illogical, but folks have done stranger things for a lot less.

Most of the state doesn't only allow kids to enroll based on boundaries. The schools I've taught in have open enrollment and they are all public. Kids come from other counties or towns/cities and we lose kids all of the time to neighboring districts.

Fair. I just think 25 football teams could make the same claim you are making.

Again, that's a hard claim to make considering you've never spent a day in the life of a football player at Dwenger, Pioneer, or Adams Central.............to name a few.

I would take Cathedral’s daily/weekly preparation and commitment to being the best football program as humanly possible over any other teams in the state. I’m sure someone from CG, New Pal, etc will argue otherwise but you aren’t going to find many, if any schools who take football more seriously than Cathedral and are dead set on being a championship contender every single year. If you think Cathedral just goes through the motions M-Th and just shows up on Friday you would be severely mistaken.

Only one school made this list based on a one year record....... solely because Mark Bless won't give HHFDT the time of day. That is all.

This is what leads me to believe that the travel rule is grounded in something other than, or in addition to, concerns about students missing school, or expense. I believe there are those that feel such games would give a team a competitive advantage come tournament time, and since not every school can avail themselves of such opportunities, no one should. I know it’s silly and illogical. But I can’t think of any other reason for the rule.

I do have a couple of big fat rings from lofty perches but I have also been among the worst teams in the state. Football is good for kids in high school. Even bad programs. I have no clue why you keep bringing it up. What a horrible way to look at life.... you aren't good so quit trying. Maybe you played once upon a time but you seem to have missed the point of high school athletics. I usually scroll past your nonsense but I think its important to speak out toward nonsense from time to time. If you quit posting today about your lunatic proposal that ADs across the state should stand up an listen no one would miss them. Its a dumb idea you made up.
