Week 4 of "I'm a nerd and have no clue how this sport with young people actually works"

I'll kindly pass, not worth the time. I just know that a team was up this past weekend 35-0 and lost. Gotta go for the jugular. As a coach, I'm running the score up to 49-0 in the first half. If I have an opportunity to score again before halftime, I'm taking a knee, the game is over. If I'm up 35-0 in the second half, I'm letting the 2nd string run down the clock.

Obviously, I have no idea what happened. But that AD has some serious stones, that’s for sure.

This should be the most exciting LCC/WL game since 2016, when LCC beat WL 28-25. WL has won the last 7 games and leads the series 37-16. This is the 54th meeting between the two schools. They have played every year since 1959, except for 1995 and 1996 and 2001-2010. It is always hard for LCC to beat WL. Even when LCC won state in 1976, LCC only beat WL 12-6 in (2OT). WL went 5-5 in 1976. October 2, 1976 - It was Homecoming at LCC and Tom Weber scored the TD in the 2nd overtime for LCC. Troy Burgess had 110 yards rushing in the game for LCC. LCC 0-6-0-0-0-6 WL 6-0-0-0-0-0 The largest margin of victory for LCC over WL was in 1994. LCC won 38-7 that year. WL went 0-9 in 1994. Elsner was the QB for LCC. Kevin Sanson, Matt Buche, Tom Vaughan, and Nick Rooze scored for LCC in that game. LCC had 234 yards rushing against WL in 1994. LCC 12-13-7-6 WL 0-7-0-0 The most impressive win over WL was in 1969. LCC went 10-0 that year beat WL 30-0. That was the only loss for WL in 1969. That was the 14th straight win for LCC when they beat WL. WL only had 26 yards rushing in that game. Delaney had a 65 yard put return for LCC. Dewenter and Mills were the QB's for LCC and Metzinger was the Fullback. LCC 0-16-0-14 WL 0-0-0-0

Alexandria at Mississinewa--This game is one that has been marked on both schools schedule as a must win to stay in the race for the CIC crown. It is Mississinewa's Homecoming and a radio announcer this past week said that when he was in high school and came to Gas City for a Mississinewa's homecoming game he knew that they had a slim chance of winning because of how the entire city gets into homecoming. This is the conference game of the week. Mississinewa has yet to allow a point to be scored and has had a running clock every game this season. This game the Mississinewa defense will have to prepared and show up to defend the pass. In the end Mississinewa rolls to another W with another running clock against a very good Alexandria team. Blackford at Eastbrook--Eastbrook may be down this year but don't count them out of making a run at the CIC crown. Blackford is in usual territory as they have 2 wins on the season already. Blackford is finding some success this year but they still don't have enough to hold off Eastbrook. Eastbrook rolls and wins big in this one. Frankton at Oak Hill--Eagles will win this one but which one? Oak Hill has had a rough start to the CIC season running into Mississinewa and Madison-Grant. Frankton thought they had something going this year but have yet to get a W. Oak Hill came into the season receiving votes in the rankings and was still getting votes until the CIC season started. Oak Hill rights the ship this week and gets back on track in the conference and wins big over Frankton. Madison-Grant at Elwood--Can there be a running clock after the 1st quarter? Unfortunately, the rules state the score difference has to be 35 at the half or later before the running clock goes into effect. MG plays the freshman most of the second half in this one as they roll to a big win.

I remember reading about the GM not wanting to take Young and was forced into it by Tepper. But, I completely forgot he's the entitled jackass who was fined 300K for pouring beer on a Jax fan from his Suite. How can the Panthers 2nd round pick turn into a #1 overall? I don't recall that being a possibility.

I like MD and Castle to cover -11. Not sure North, Memorial or Reitz can cover their big numbers though. I would not be surprised if we hold a player or two out and I heard some chatter about Reitz getting hit with some injuries, but not sure the extent. North should be able to finally get some points on the board. If I had to bet, I say they have the best chance of covering of the 3 big favorites.

Talk about being drafted to horrible situations 1. Terrible new Owner 2. Impatient, never should of been start of the ruining process in year 1, just sit and deal with it and DEVELOP 3. Fired coaches/GM who made trade, that brought him in 4. Bench 2 games in to year 2. and the BEARS STILL have their 2nd round pick that could be #1 overall AGAIN

I would say the loss of the players to Elkhart has forced Mishawaka to rely on young talent that came to play this year. They face planted after the Penn game, was that because they left all their juice on the field and ran out against Concord, or is Concord that good. When push comes to shove, I don't think 5A is won by a true north team this year. I think Warsaw is their best bet, but Bart ball always finds a way to fumble that away as well. I think Penn's O bought into the hype after the Valpo game, and thought Mishawaka would just roll over for them, not taking anything away from Mishawaka, but that was the 1 out of 10 game scenario. But, I am biased so, maybe that game was the 9 out of 10 and Penn winning would be the 1, I just refuse to believe that they are that far behind Mishawaka.

Nahh.. two years ago we were gunna play you guys and it was a torrential downpour with lightning. And we don't have a ton of openings, just some, sometimes, but it's always nice to have each other in mind when this stuff arises. Such a bummer to miss out on a game, we've gone through it, terrible.

But a one point loss to Concord isn't looking so bad anymore, don't you think? Concord is 4-0 against four programs that are pretty good. Concord is #2 in my latest 5A poll, Sagarin has them at #3. Not arguing your point about Penn and Concord being on the same level, I just think Elkhart's 1pt loss to Concord (who also beat Mishawaka by 1) is better than Penn's 20pt loss to Mishawaka. For what it's worth, I do have Mishawaka at #1 in 4A. Was it Mishawaka or Northwood that lost two top tier athletes to Elkhart? If it was Mishawaka, kudos to them, they haven't skipped a beat and look to be even better than they were the last two years. Sidenote: Always have and always will have admiration for Penn and will root for them when they're not playing Snider. I'm a bit of a fan of Mishawaka now too now that they aren't in Snider's class. They lost two heartbreakers in a row to Snider and this is their year to shine in my opinion.

Hearsay as I didn't attend the scrimmage this year, but a couple folks I talked to in the stands Friday said that, as much as you can get from a scrimmage, LCC easily held their own against Harrison. Given what I saw in the scrimmage in 2023, that sounds similar.

HH at North Posey and GS at Southridge this week will help shed a little more light on things. Of course the big one is next week in Lincoln City.

I appreciate the excitement about IU....loved what I witnessed Sat night. BUT, history would tell us to approach the season with some degree of skepticism. One game at a time...next team up is Charlotte.

LCC looked better-tuned in the Twin Lakes game save for the second quarter. LCC won the game 56-21 and shut out Twin Lakes in all but the second quarter when it seemed that Twin Lakes would make it a game. LCC went 2-2 in their first half possessions with their very familiar quickstrike offense. Mind you, yes, some of their scores came on one-play or two-play drives, but they also had nine-play drives that took under three minutes with the no-huddle offense shaving seconds that turn into minutes off of their possession time. This is what was missing from the Logansport game where LCC would let the Berries hold the ball for 7-8 minutes, stop them, then give the ball back in 2 minutes without a score. I'd be surprised if LCC had 6 minutes of possession time, in just two possessions, in that first quarter and yet came out of it 14-0 to end Q1. Not sure what was going on in the second half as Twin Lakes outscored LCC 21-7 to bring the half to a close with a tie. The LCC defense allowed a couple of quick scores while the offense did not reciprocate in their short 2nd quarter possessions. Given Coach O'Shea's reputation at LaRocca for second half adjustments, I think the Knights might have been sweating a bit heading to the locker room. Instead, a renewed defense came back from the Knights' locker room along with a fired offense that saw Metzger scramble out of the pocket at opportune times which kept drives alive and added to his air stats of over 350 yards passing with over a 70% completion rate. Toss in Meister, who gave a master class on running the ball with a total of almost 140 yards on the ground and four TDs for the night and the Knights' offense looked like its old self putting up 35 points in the second, again on limited possession time. Toss in a receiving corps with 20+ receptions for 300+ yards and it looked like old times. Outside of the 2nd quarter, the defense has to be feeling really good. They found a way to be in Twin Lakes' backfield several times during the night. When they weren't in the backfield, Twin Lakes had their share of incomplete passes coming at the hands of the secondary and backers making hits that jarred the ball loose at the catch. The defense also showed off that bend-not-break component a couple of times in the game, including a situation where Twin Lakes got down to LCC's 1, was charged with a motion penalty, and saw that drive die at LCC's 6 only to have LCC turn right back around and take it 94 yards in the other direction for a score. Without the 2nd quarter, I'd give the Knights an A+ rating for the game, but that 2nd quarter gave reminiscence of the Logansport game. With that 2nd half, against Twin Lakes, I'd give them a B+ overall score for the game ... again, taking into account the wonky 2nd quarter. That kind of play will be OK for the middle teams of the HC, but it can't be repeated against WL or that game will be over by the half ... similarly in later-round post-season games against teams like Lutheran, AC, etc. Nonetheless, it looks like the Knights are going in the right direction to getting the kinks out. Last week, the consistency was an issue from drive to drive and defensive stand to defensive stand throughout the game. this week, it was kind of bottled into a single quarter. Overall, good progress.

Elkhart being on this list is because of over inflated wins against two bad South Bend football programs. They are about as good as Penn.

Yeah I don't know why you are still bullish on Avon. There only win is against a Ben Davis sqaud that fooled us all into beleiving they would be a contender this year. Plus, Avon's QB is out indefinately with a broken collar bone.

I forgot to tell you that both the JV game and freshman game with North were canceled due to the lack of officials. They are really having trouble getting these games in this season. The JV team has gotten two games in of the four games that were scheduled up to this point and the freshman team has gotten one game in and that was the season opener with Col. East. The Martinsville games were canceled because of the weather delay to the varsity game which was pushed back into Saturday, and I suspect the freshman game with TH North was canceled for the lack of officials.

In true LCC fashion, I coached a lot of those guys sons. BTW, this last Friday's game was Youth Night at LCC where they introduced the junior high players and cheerleaders and also introduce the youth players, 3rd - 6th grade. There's an Anthrop in that group along with other names from the folks that were in the four-peat group.

Lutheran was up 49-0 at halftime, and the final score was 49-8. I propose an amendment to the RUTS methodology that exempts any team whose halftime score equals their final score.
