  1. From CDC numbers 152 deaths from people under 24 and ALL had serious underlying conditions.. if its the safety of the student athletes we are worried about. We could save more lives preaching to not text and drive rather than Covid. Schools have afforded kids parents the opportunity to not have to send there kids to school. So if grandma and grandpa are raising a kid.. they don't have to go to school or play. That argument is gone. Kids are out running around with zero restrictions right now in public. The only thing holding them accountable is sports. That is the only time most kids are getting screened and forced to distance. Why cut out the one thing that holds them accountable?.

  2. I’m so sick and tired of reading (and writing) about non-football topics, I felt the need to at least attempt to get some substantive high school football conversation going. The referee on the game you’re watching is the guy in the offensive backfield With the white hat. He’s the quarterback of the crew. If you have a crew member who might be a little weak, possibly due to inexperience, there are ways to try and “hide” him, although it’s impossible to do that indefinitely on a 5 person crew. But the R position is not a place you can hide. Like the QB of the teams, the R often gets too much credit when the team succeeds, and too much blame when they don’t. So, how do you, sitting in the stands (or prowling the sideline), know when the R is a good one, or may struggle if challenged? Here are some nuances you probably wouldn’t pick up ordinarily. But if the R is consistently getting these little things right, he’s very likely to be getting the big things right — and seeing that the rest of the crew does, too. Watch the R’s head when the QB releases the ball. Does it stay locked on the QB? Or can you see the head turn to follow the flight of the ball? Everyone else in the place will watch the ball. But R’s focus has to remain on the QB. I guarantee you that if the QB’s coach looks back and sees his kid on the ground, you’re going to have to have an explanation for how he got there. Does R Mark the spot of a fumble in the backfield with his beanbag? Contrary to popular belief, this is bad mechanics. The purpose of bagging the spot of a fumble (or backward pass) is to have a spot from which to enforce the penalty for certain fouls that may occur before or during a loose ball. But if possession is lost behind the neutral zone, under NF rules that spot can never be an enforcement spot. So, if you see R’s beanbag come out on a fumble behind the LOS, he’s telling you he does things without knowing the underlying reasons. Always a bad sign. Does R let the passer cross his face on a rollout or scramble? R always assumes an initial position on the passer’s throwing side. There’s a reason for that: it is the best position from which to judge whether a loose ball is a forward pass vs. a fumble, arguably the toughest judgment call R has to make. It’s important to maintain that position as long as possible when the QB moves toward you. Good R’s will fight to maintain that relationship as long as possible. Does R go into the sideline on wide plays? The R is not normally involved in activity right around the dead ball spot unless the play ends in the offensive backfield. But a good R will help on plays that go into the sideline at the LOS or a short distance downfield. The wing official must maintain the out of bounds spot, and R should go past him, into the sideline, to make sure any players of the opposing team who went into the sideline come out without incident. It’s more than just hustle. It’s good dead ball officiating. And it’s a critical skill. Does R signal his “count” early and clearly. One of R’s primary responsibilities is to count the offensive players on every play, and signal his count to his wing officials. If R signals that there are 11 on offense, the wing officials then count the players in the backfield in order to determine legality of formation. In this day of specialty substitutions, no-huddle and up tempo offenses, it has become more important than ever that R get this done as early as possible, and let those wing officials know so they can go about the rest of their business. Does R signal crisply and properly? Believe it or not, good R’s practice signaling in front of a mirror. Do the arms go straight up when signaling a score, or do the elbows bend ? Does he wait to stop moving before starting to signal? Is he giving a preliminary signal to the press box when appropriate? Does he always use the dead ball signal for fouls prior to the snap, and after the play is over? Does R get the timing rules right? Last year in the playoffs — a sectional final and a regional — I saw 2 different R’s start the game clock after an accepted penalty for delay of game. An absolute no-no, and a dead giveaway that R has not done a deep dive into the rulebook recently. Now, since you know these “tricks of the trade” for the R position, when the loudmouth next to you starts dogging the R, you don’t have to take his word for it. An informed fan is a better fan.

  3. Perhaps one of the few positives that come out of this is that, assuming that we have a season and a tournament, the #1 excuse from the whiny underachievers will change from “ we got jobbed by the zebras,” to “if it hadn’t been for the virus ... .” Just trying to find something of a silver lining.

  4. MY OPINION: I feel like schools that are not reopening is foolish. They put in multiple safety measures but do you really think that these kids haven't been hanging out at each others houses, going out to eat with each other, and I know my kids have went to multiple parties and bonfires since school has been out. All this is political garbage and pressure put on schools and business. North Central high school just postponed/canceled everything for start of school and will be doing virtual classes. This will have a domino effect because of the (ut oh a big school just got scared and pressured to close so we better do that to effect). So parents that say no my kids are not going to school I have a question for you. Have your kids been stuck inside or have not been able to leave the yard/house 1 time to go hang out somewhere or have someone over? I'm sure I will hear mine haven't and wont. AND I SAY CRAP.... you just want to be political correct.

  9. Seriously, another one of thes topics? I know we all miss sports in general and are anxious to find out what's gonna happen, but these "should we go back on time" topics have proven time and again to be counter productive. No disrespect to the initial poster here (looking at you @Football Guru 25) but come on...

  10. I will continue to solicit for donations to the GID. I promote the GID during every donation drive and will continue to do so. It's a great website and worthy of donations by those who use it most. That's what I try to promote.

  11. 1. Lake County has 2nd most cases in the state, Not sure what else I can do about that. 2. I was teaching this year and returned to Nursing full time in March...Please see 1. 3. I am honored to be stereotyped as a typical football coach, being a nurse and former college placekicker and all. 4. How do you know its not like that in Fort Wayne? MY entire reason for posting is that people assume hospitals are overwhelmed and sinking. Its absolutely Not true in Lake County Indiana. Can this change, of course and if it does I wont be so high on going back to school and playing football. But if it doesn't change, then what are we doing?

  16. in my LONG time on here both as poster back in the infancy days of 1999 and the last 10 years as someone who has helped run the website, I know for a FACT that posters have been called into offices of their bosses about things they have said on the website. Whether you agree with that stance or not, it has happened. To each their own but what your definition of "egregious" may not be the same as someone who makes decisions that determined your placement of employment What is there to hide then around here? Why have you asked to have the leadership team hide screenshots you have put on here because it had information about your employment? I mean, its just a message board right?? Why use @Temptation and not your real name? What are you afraid of? Please do not misconstrue my asking that question that I am trying to get you to reveal to the GID world your identity, but don't you think its hypocritical that you want your opinions protected on here by a screen name vs folks looking for cancel culture ? I really do not care if folks use real names or Coach so and so or screen names. Really don't but my guess that folks who have strong opinions on variety of topics would think twice under their real name vs screen name on here for just one example.

  17. not saying this is the case here, HOWEVER, if it just the internet, or social media, then why do folks lose their job all the time whether if it is in teaching or other professions by comments that they have made online, on video or otherwise? I know that I have sat in meetings where this has been discussed over my tenure in this profession.

  21. Thanks for answering. I'll ignore that man who I wonder what he teaches in his classes. I wonder how he treats kids who are immigrants or undocumented... I wonder how he treats children with ideas which are different than his... 1. So they are not being hospitalized...or not getting there to your hospital...or it isn't that bad. 2. Gotcha. 3. That wasn't the stereotype I was getting at. See our peers here. Remember, I've been teaching for 20 years. 🙂 4. I know it isn't like that here because of my friends who work at Parkview, Lutheran, and Dupont Hospitals. They are taking in large numbers of patients from the surrounding counties as well, so not just a localized thing here. But they see it every day and they are continually reminding us to wear masks and take good care.

  22. At this point, sadly, there are no more "facts" as the term has been colloquially used in the past. For every "fact" that one side brings up, the other has a differing "fact." We should "pay attention to the science" but only the "science" that suits our "facts" not the other fellow's. It's intellectually tiring, and, quite frankly, it's only going to get worse...

  23. I find the opening of schools would serve a great purpose...the elimination of public school education. There are a lot of people looking for a payday out there and this may be their golden ticket. If a player catches the virus and ends up in the hospital...I have no doubt the parents would lawyer up. The suits may not be worth the paper printed on, but they will take time and energy and corporation money. What is the procedure for a student if they refuse to wear a mask (if required)? Talk about potential law suits there. You may think all parents are honorable...think again

  37. I think that @bombkicker is the true voice of reason on this thread. You have @oldtimeqb and @DannEllenwood who feel the virus is leftist plot to take away freedoms and you also have people who feel we shouldn't play at all. We all need to show proper respect to the safety measures and wear a mask and social distance and demand it by our athletes when they can do it. We will face bumps along the way but we must follow the rules to protect each other.
