  1. Come on now guys - it's really NOT THAT HARD. We do it in wrestling every year. You don't need sagarin or CalPreps or any other computer system. No anonymous voting. You get the head coaches in a room with a tournament director. You have a list of criteria (Head to head, common opponents, etc..) and you hash it out. It FINALLY gives some credence to a good regular season. Everyone wins in this scenario.

  2. If Reitz Bowl would ever upgrade its lights from their 1970’s, I would put it number one. I don’t mind a track, as long as it’s a legitimate setup, like Central Stadium. Enlow’s old configuration, where the track ran under the visitor stands or whatever Hatchet Hollow is supposed to be- I can do without. I am a fan of SS and VL. Decades ago when I would scout next week’s opponent, I would make note of how many visiting players were more interested in talking to fans than the game. One time at SS, a visiting backup had a full 5 minute conversation with a cheerleader while the game was going on. I really hope it worked out for that young man, because he was trying hard to impress her. Lol

  3. Private coaches, 7on7 leagues, travel baseball/aau basketball is hurting high school football coaches. Our high school football coaches put in so much time and work with the kids, assistants, at the school, going to clinics, etc. It is important as parents of young kids to trust in these men/women. Just because you take your kid to a private coach and pay him money does not mean he is going to be “D1”. Our high school coaches know football. Earlier this summer the indystar put out a n article regarding a QB training coach up in Westfield. To me, that was harmful for our head and assistant coaches. Parents get caught in a trap thinking these special coaches know more. Sure, that individual might know some interesting techniques, but it is important to be at all your high school football first. Also, these high school teachers/coaches need to be paid more. It makes it very difficult on them with the amount of time they are putting in. Football is a special game for special people. It is not AAU or travel baseball where you get to play a 100s of games throughout the year. It takes a tremendous amount of time, lifting, skill work, agility, training to get to those 10 or so games in the fall. Trust our coaches!!!

  6. ... and for those who follow the last point and say "but basketball has neutral sites." After the sectional, each basketball host has four teams (so only 1/4 of the crowd would be a "home crowd") - and there is a decent chance the host school or a nearby school from its sectional will be among the four and thus bring a "home crowd." Also, basketball requires a much smaller commitment. Smaller venue means fewer workers (for example, don't have to have a chain crew, there's less need to have people control sideline access, likely fewer concession stands) and they're indoors, rather than working outdoors in November for a game featuring two different teams. The amount of work it takes to put on a football game vs. a basketball game (even a *big* basketball game like a regional or semistate) is astronomically greater.

  7. Nominating and confirming Justices for vacant seats according to their perceived philosophical bent is vastly different from increasing the number of vacant seats for no reason other than creating a new majority.

  9. THANK YOU!!!! If 8-9 Wrestling coaches can seed 14 different weight classes in a 1 evening. Then, 8 coaches can seed a single sectional in about 20 minutes. Don't even have to be present. Each coach ranks the Section 1-7 (doesn't include his own). Emails it to Sectional Host. The host compiles them, and send it back to the coaches. Even make how each school ranked known to the other head coaches.

  10. I understand what you are saying, but I don't quite agree with it. Sure, two big hitters squaring off will fill the stands in any round, but I think you will get MORE butts in seats if those two face off in round three versus round one. There are plenty of folks out there that have huge loyalty to teams and you'd be hard pressed to get them to break away their first round game to travel to another game, big ticket or not. Impossible if they actually have a kid or family member on their team playing that night. Now, if their own team gets knocked out first or second round, that fan would be much more inclined to roll a county or two over to watch the two heavyweights duke it out since their own team is done. And I'd venture they would be a little, or even much, less inclined to make that trek if it ends up being a game that will likely end up lopsided since one of the only two real contenders has been knocked out first round. In my highly uninformed opinion with absolutely no evidence to back any statements up, the first round of any given sectional should more or less be attended, overall, roughly equally throughout that sectional, no matter the randomness, or not, of the matchups. That is to say, if you're going to have about 8000 fans attending the first round of sectional X, you probably won't swing the pendulum too far one way or the other if the two top teams meet in that round or not. Local fans will be local fans. I'm hitting GS whether they are playing Heritage Hills first round or Washington (no offense Washington). But if GS is sitting at home the week of the sectional championship, I'm more likely to be at that championship game if it is the 1-2 seed versus the 1-5 or 2-4. I think that's how you get your better attendance later in the rounds, the marquee matchup. Of course there are plenty of football fans that aren't particularly loyal to any school close to where they live, so they'll certainly hit up whatever matchup looks best whether it is week one or week three, and maybe even travel several hours for it But I'd imagine the vast majority of first round games are attended by the family, friends, and loyal (and maybe even the casual) fans of the two teams playing whether it is a 1-8 game, a 4-5, or whatever. I really feel seeding would be more likely to get more folks traveling to games in the championship round once their own team is out. Not everyone is quite as diehard as some folks here on the GID, so it oftentimes just takes more hype to get them on the road once their own season is over.

  11. So many people missing the point: speculating about what effect this or that seeding will have on the tournament. The chief benefit of seeding is that it gives more meaning to regular season games. The teams are actually playing for a tangible benefit, which makes the regular season better. That’s why you should not only seed the tournament, but seed all the teams in the sectional, not just the top two.

  12. I just thought this was cool and thought it was worth sharing. outside of the Reitz Bowl, The Snake Pit is about it when it comes to memorable football fields in the area. looks really nice. Now if only they could install an escalator 😅

  13. As another football summer is drawing to an end - something that has been on my mind that I don't really know where to address it - but wanted to get it out there - I thought I'd share something that I've noticed that has been a troubling trend that I've observed throughout the last couple summers. These 11 on 11 "scrimmages" or whatever it is you want to call them. While they CAN be a great tool for self-evaluations - I've been a little "taken aback" or "put off" by some of the antics by fellow coaches that are supposedly there to coach up their own teams - but yet it turns into a "macho/chest bumping/screaming/hollering" antics after a given play or whatever it is. I get the competitive nature of these things - but in June/July there are no championships won or trophies given out...can't we just cool it with all of that? I know I sound like an old "get off my lawn" type - but it seems it has just gotten increasingly worse as the summers have gone on. I'm now into my 16th year coaching (where does the time go?) - but I find it hard to believe that "back in the day" (if these things were allowed) - some of my ol ball coaches going crazy after a play trying to drum up excitement. I've seen it escalate into chippyness - and kids take after their leaders - so what do you expect? As a coaching community - we can and should do better. That is all.

  16. Let's hope whoever gains control makes it more affordable. It's extremely expensive through DirecTV. And I'm curious as to why DirecTV is "beleaguered" since they are AT&T.

  17. The Coaches would use stats, they do it in Wrestling. You want some guy 150 miles away determining seeding depending solely on stats? That's not any better than the system that's in place now(ping pong balls.) It's usually pretty obvious who should be seeded where by the coaches who actually know their teams. I'm guessing for football, Sectional seeding could be done in an hour or less in a conference call by the Coaches of the teams in the Sectional. After that level, seeding isn't really needed for Regionals, SS or State.

  19. 6 two way Seniors last year....as for the juniors that played JV (that JV team over there was really bad). We will see....they have a fantastic young "enthusiastic" coaching staff.

  20. When I coached basketball, we tried to dial things back in the offseason because we a) encouraged our girls to play multiple sports, and b) tried to be respectful of their time. We'd do 1-2 open gyms a week in the spring, go hard in June with league play and a couple weekend tournaments, then hit the gym again in the fall 2-3 times a week in the run-up to the season. At the same time, we didn't push our kids into AAU programs. The better kids played AAU, the others didn't. AAU/club was a breeder of bad habits anyway. What happened? Our numbers dwindled, big-time, because those kids got into soccer (where they're expected to be on a travel team to play high school, and play travel year-round) or volleyball (where they're expected to be on a travel team to play high school, and play travel year-round, and where our varsity VB coach at the time used to threaten to cut kids if they played basketball instead of/in addition to club volleyball in the winter) or softball (which is a big deal at our school, and oh yeah, expects kids to play year-round travel). So, in trying to be respectful of our kids' time, we instead lost kids to other sports because basketball was seen as "less important" because we weren't pushing our kids onto year-round travel teams. The program has rebounded, in part because of kids who are dedicated basketball players and because we had age-group (school-based) teams playing in area leagues down to third grade, so because kids are playing "travel" or on "select teams" at younger ages, they're more dedicated and stick with the sport rather than getting plucked away by others. It's absurd.

  28. If the results are known between all the sectional coaches, I'd think the stigma of looking like a total a**hat would be deterrent enough. But we know that isn't always guaranteed. Perhaps automatically throwing out the two highest and lowest seeds for each team might be useful in keeping the odd vote or two out? Sure, March Madness has really always been a bust in my book. Just award the national title to the #1 rank team at the end of the season and be done with it. /s

  30. What? I love going to the Jewell in November! The long drive west through the harvested fields with rolls of hay painted in support of the Titans, seeing the lights, being harassed by Gibson Co. deputies for tailgating when the GS faithful are 50 yards away with open containers. Its great! In 2013 when I was coaching middle school we had a Saturday night double header vs. Mt. Carmel at the Snake Pit. Didn't see any snakes but the mosquitos were so bad I felt like I was in the Okefenokee Swamp.

  32. So GS finally wins a sectional and now they throw shade on VL. Got it. Is this sarcasm or real football insight?
    1 point
  33. Wow. Not sure that was ever a thing...VL's attempted move to the PAC was not an indicator of rejection from the SIAC, rather an internal move that was thought to be beneficial going forward (that I felt was shortsighted to say the least). It worked out for the better IMO. I'd rather be a member of a conference that chose US over those who don't believe we belong. And as far as I know, there have been no regrets among SIAC members about bringing VL back into the league. But seriously...can we all just agree now that GS feels slighted that they were passed on for Lincoln? I've seen these types of comments for 2 years now.

  34. Answer your questions rietz will be dark horse to contend for siac, with 17 starters vin Lincoln should improve but is there talent on that team besides Keller,I don't think jasper will win conference this year maybe 4 or 5 best.i believe bosse can win 3 to 4 wins at least bosse best talent is in middle school right now.Yes mater dei can return to state if win siac or top 3 they should get state.I think castle should finish 3 to 5 in siac. The bears will have a long season might be worst in siac this year.memorial should be be elite this year and if they can get out of sectional they have shot but the 4a south is loaded.brooks Thomas brother Levi might start for them 6'1 or 6'2 remember the name not qb soph wr tizhaun Tomlinson 6'1 .

  37. Let’s not cut Memorial short. 5 trips to state finals under Hurley is the most impressive stat in SW Indiana football. The best thing GS has is the success factor that allowed you to dodge Memorial and Chartard last season. 😂

  38. Which illustrates how much deeper the SIAC is than the PAC. Our second place conference teams were in 2A state finals and 4A semi-state. See the difference?

  41. In 2012 the IFCA formed a 14 member committee with myself and Ryan Gallogly {Brebeuf HS} as Co-Chairmans. We put together a 3- part proposal to the IHSAA that included- Part 1- 6th class, Part 2- Success Factor and Part 3- seeding {see below}. I polled all the football playing schools Principals, AD's and Head Coaches in the state on all 3 proposals. Principals- 83% of the principals voted & 85% voted YES, AD's- 86% of the AD's voted & 85% voted YES, Head Coaches- 96%of the head coaches voted & 91% voted YES. We presented are proposal the indiana Athletic Directors committee and they voted 24-0 in favor of are 3 part proposal. Then we presented it to the IHSAA and they approved the 6th class, they approved their version of the success factor {ours was for 4 years not 2} and they did not approve seeding.

  42. Sagarin's ELO CHESS ranking does not take into account margin of victory. You likely use some combo of Sagarin (especially ELO CHESS) and head-to-head/common opponents. It would not be terribly difficult in most sectionals, especially for the top two and bottom two.
