Carmel Job open

Per the IndyStar, Coach John Herbert as resigned.

Herbert had a great run at Carmel, but safe to say these last few seasons have been wildly underwhelming if not downright unacceptable. Carmel is still one of the best jobs in the state, if not the entire Midwest.

I’m not sure of the forum rules of commenting on speculative candidates so will wait for a mod to chime in, but Carmel should have plenty of suitors both locally and nationally, and depending on how committed they are could land a whale.

Personal opinion, but I think it is just as desirable as it would be if they were in a conference, including the MIC.  Conferences don’t mean much beyond schedule stability.  At Carmel, the goal is a state championship, not conference.  Cathedral has remained a top job without any conference affiliation.  Carmel will as well.  Center Grove will be fine if they don’t find a conference.

Carmel shouldn’t handcuff themselves to a local search radius here. This job should attract coaches from all over the place.

Yes, they could look in Bloomington. There is this Coach Curt Cignetti, if they google him they will see he wins.

Hebert is a great football coach.  He won a lot of games there as a player, assistant and HC.   He deserves a lot of respect for what he has accomplished at Carmel.    And from what I have been told and my interactions with him, he is a great dude.    His comment on the relationships that he has built over the years speaks to that character.  And him saying that he is not done with coaching should ring out with other coaches around the area.  If you want a great addition to your staff, I would blow up his phone this morning and get him hired now.   He would bring a ton of value to any program.    

As far as who will take over there, I think it's very early, and they will most certainly get a ton of interest.    I would think that they will want to stick with someone that has "big school" on their resume due to the volume and sheer ancillary factors that go into running that size of a program.   We are talking well over 200 players and a plethora of non-coaching related items that have to be dealt with in a program that size.    Being a program at a mega-school is not about x's and o's.   It's about managing the program and hiring the right guys to do the actual coaching.    Almost a CEO type position.    That is a different dynamic.

For instance:    (pure TIC)  "Coach Nowlin at Rensselaer would make a great candidate for a job like Carmel'.  (Its true, Its true, Kurt Angle voice) 

What you should not do is say, "Coach Nowlin, I was told is interviewing today for the Carmel position".

YES YES YES!! They would be hiring a WOF celebrity! We need to work on getting some stuff to hit the Google algorithm so you can say "I win and I am a celebrity, Google me" It is perfect! 🤣 Get your talent agent in contact with me and we will get this Rolling!!!!

True story, Wife is AWESOME (goes without saying) however in 2010, I did interview for Delphi HC job, she was like cool, have fun, then next day I get a call back from AD wanting to set up final round with Board with another candidate, so I told the wife that and she was like, wait what/??  I go well if I do well there, they could offer me the job, she then goes, OH, well I am not moving from Crown Point, I didn't think you would actually have a shot.   Thanks Honey!!!   Point being, SHE IS AWESOME, because she knew going into this thing called marriage I was all in of Coaching, and lets me do my thing, but she is not the Coaches Wife in the stands every Friday, etc etc so lesson be learned there, make sure you explain ENTIRE process to your significant other so that you do not have to call the AD and apologize for "wasting their time" which was not a waste but still......

Fun Fact still,  I got a message from my old retired principal just last week at like 1:40......."turned on the tV and there you were".  yup, its on rotation now on Game Show Network.   Check you local listings as they say

You think that happens in a new look HCC that is missing some of the current members? That's the only way I could see it happening. I can't see them teaming up with the Marion County Township schools again unless it was only for Football and Basketball.

If you're Carmel and CG wouldn't you rather just pick from this list of schools every year?

I think we are closer to the elite Great Lakes high schools creating some sort of scheduling agreement or conference than Carmel and CG joining an existing IHSAA conference. The only conference in the IHSAA that currently fits them turned them down already.

I could see the MIC extending an invite to them (but not CG) to return, but that seems highly unlikely given the severe competitive imbalance beyond football and boys/girls basketball. 

The HCC had a chance, and turned Carmel (and CG) down and instead invited Franklin Central to fill its eighth spot. Have heard that Olympic sport coaches had a big hand in that - you know if you're bringing Carmel into the league, you're probably never finishing higher than second in the conference in tennis, swimming, et al.  

Carmel will likely be an independent for the foreseeable future.
