Many of those schools only have 12-15 kids per class, some have more but likely not more than 25-30 and as stated not all of those attend Mater Dei. Trust me, the school is trying to increase the enrollment, not keep it down for athletics.

On a hot summer’s night in August of 1982 my favorite wrestling tag team was formed. In my eyes Strike Force is the greatest tag team known to man. Tito Santana and Rick Martel could beat up anyone one out there. Due to politics it took them until October of 1987 to win the tag team title. For years they had to take a back seat to lesser tag teams like the islanders and the Hart foundation, but they were patient and stayed the course. The WWF robbed them again shortly after, and fixed a match so Demolition could win the title. Strike Force would never hold the belt again and after a couple of years Rick Martel turned heel and left Tito high and dry and they eventually started their individual careers. I believe that championship title in 1987 catapulted MD football to what it is today. When the going gets tough the Wildcats think about everything Strike Force had to go through to win that title without the help of the WWF fat cats and they dig deep and get the job done. I can’t confirm with certainty, but I believe coach Goebel has broken out some old vhs tapes at halftime when MD is down just to show them the kind of heart Strike Force had...the heart of true champions. I hope the Miners think about that on Friday. Can they beat MD? Maybe. Can they beat MD AND Strike Force? No way

I was a "Rockers" fan all the way. Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels - what a team! The betrayal in the barber shop still haunts me to this day. And, the bushwackers were awesome as well! Kinda like how Linton draws from all over Greene County.....(sorry, couldn't help it)

Let's take your freshman team argument from a few posts back. In the 2019-2020 school year, Mater Dei's freshman class was 128 students(right in line with other schools in the sectional except Linton who is a little smaller school). Linton's freshman class was 105. Assuming half of those are males, MD had a 64 kid pool to possibly play football and Linton had 52. So Mater Dei get's 25 + of those kids out playing football and Linton doesn't have enough to form a team(in your words). Numbers wise, there's not a big difference between the 2 schools class size wise. Isn't it part of the equation for a football head coach and program to get as many of those kids out playing football as possible?

According to Maxpreps, Luers has 76 and Andrean has 67. It lists MD at 64. Southridge that bumped to 3A only carries 48. Looks like Southridge has found the magic potion. I get the numbers argument on the surface. I just won't agree that numbers guarantee anything. I think a team with 40 kids can beat a team with 60, 80, or 100 kids depending on the makeup of both teams.

You assume that depth equals the 2nd string kid at that position comes in and performs at the same level of the kid that got injured. Injuries are always a concern for every team. Not too many teams have at any position a 2nd stringer that is just as good as the 1st stringer, unless the coach is misjudging talent or playing a favorite. I absolutely believe that attitude and work ethic can best talent in a team sport. I've seen it too many times. I used to watch Bob Knight and IU do it in basketball for years. Maybe I should have added mental toughness, conditioning, and preparation to the list. Quality is more important than quantity any day. There are plenty of games, fights and battles throughout the course of history where a team or smaller force defeated and larger one.

I think what would make more sense is to compare the number of football players to total enrollment in the school. You act like Mater Dei has 1500 students. Mater Dei has 492 kids. Linton has 391.

Excited to see the last of the Tracy boys play tomorrow. Certainly one of the most prolific Indiana high school football families of the last decade. Still have bad dreams when all 3 were on the field against the Irish two years ago in a stinging early tourney exit. War Irish. Stay focused.

I’m not going to sit here and say East is going to win. It’s not impossible but it’s definitely improbable. At the very least I want to see them fight their hardest for 48 minutes. Maybe earn some respect for hanging with the best team in the state for a short time or for playing hard until the final whistle. Make what’s likely to be your final game in 6A a memorable one. As for Center Grove, I have lots of respect for the program and for Coach Moore. He actually earned my respect off the field ten years ago when his son (Tyson) took my sister to the Columbus East prom. My dad was planning on giving Tyson “the talk” before they all went on their ways but Coach Moore stepped in first and gave him “the talk” instead which earned our respect. We didn’t expect Tyson to do any wrong and I’m sure Coach Moore didn’t either, but it was nice to know we really didn’t have to worry one bit because he was raised right. But, anyways, good luck to the Trojans and their fans. Unless East somehow pulls off a miracle of Christ-like proportions, I’ll be pulling for you to stay COVID free and win a 6A state title like you have shown you deserve.

I am going to agree with Spitting Llamas on this one. If a kid is going to go to a high school in the Evansville metro area primarily to play football, Mater Dei would be down on the list. I think Central, North, Castle, Memorial and Reitz would typically be schools looked at before MD. MD is very good, but not a state football powerhouse like Cathedral and Roncalli. Central and Memorial have had the most recent success in the Evansville area. Mater Dei has very good years and some mediocre years, but is not a consistent juggernaut in the area. The tuition is also something that inhibits a lot of people. It's not cheap. The school and learning environment is exceptional and provides opportunity for a lot more faith and character-based learning experience than you can get in a public school. That's not bashing public schools, but that is something they frankly can't offer due to the limitations placed on them by society. Smaller class sizes are a plus compared to a large public school. Faculty seems more engaged and invested in the success of their students. That's why people choose somewhere like Mater Dei. You're looking to give your kid a certain positively structured environment and academic experience. If they also play sports and can be very competitive, that's icing on the cake.

I can promise you the boys are not looking past Decatur Central. The scouting report from their coaching staff to their defense was all the motivation our offensive line needed. Still wondering why their players would share that with our boys, but thanks for the motivation coach.

I would tend to lean towards Mater Dei's community, culture, and coaching when trying to understand the reasons for their success. There is a competitive mindset, tradition, and chemistry that you don't find at many other places anymore. Mater Dei seems to have been able to maintain that "old school", hard-nosed, disciplined mentality that many programs have lost over the years with the softening of society in general. If you look at Coach Goebel's resume as both a football and wrestling coach, there's no doubt his systems work. He was one of the most successful high school wrestling coaches in the country, not just the state. His staff is also very good. They get kids to buy-in and do whatever it takes to be successful. It's a true "team above self" culture. The entire school has that mindset, not just the athletic programs. I think many of the families have that same attitude, so the entire Mater Dei community plays a part. Families give the coaches kids that are prepared to go into the system. You just don't see that much anymore.

MD feeder school number is miss represented. If MD received all of the students in their feeder, they would/could be larger. But the enrollment in the MD feeder school are drastically down compare to past numbers. From my own experience, my oldest son's class at had 44 8th grade students. They had 21 boys. 6 went to Memorial, 1 to North, 4 to Central, 2 to Signature, and 8 went to MD. My youngest son class had 11 8th graders and 4 boys in the class. 2 went to MD, 1 went to Reitz, and one went to Signature. On the other hand my daughter's 8th grade class had 12 students and 8 were boys. Once again, 5 went to MD, 2 went to Reitz, and 1 to Signature. Typically, all 8 feeder school feed about a total of 110-125 students into MD. For this purpose, we will say it is a 50/50 split. MD gets about 55-75 boys per year. MD gets if share, but it loses boys to other schools. You can see when to you drop from a class of 44 students to a feeder school to classes of 12 in ten years, MD does not get as many athletes as they used to. MD must battle cost and Public HS that have great academic (Reitz, Central, North Posey, Gibson Southern, Mt Vernon, and North)

Same for Heritage Christian. We were supposed to play Northeastern last week at home. They went virtual and had to forfeit. We are away at Shenandoah this week. Just as the original draw would have had us doing.

Doesn't really matter after they turn in the equipment. A forfeit is a loss. Nobody cares about records accept the players when the talk about the good days..

I think it was a brilliant piece of officiating. Part of being a good official is being able to assess a situation that may or may not be covered in the book and coming up with a fair and equitable solution. This was an extraordinary situation and needed an outside the box solution.

On this point, you are incorrect, unless they are dropped off at the road and they walk to the building. Unless in your 100-year old world kids still walk uphill 6 miles in a blizzard to get to school. Just off the top of my head, North Newton or Tri County don't have a home within walking distance. I'm sure that list would grow if I put my old noggin' to work, but it ain't happening this morning. I have a real problem with those that say never or say something won't work without giving it a shot. That's just the kind of thinking that feeds the impression that Indiana is always way behind the times or too stuck in the past. I'm old, but I'm not close-minded.

Then again, you must live a very, very sheltered life. Or you are lying. Hmm, I would think a successful democratic and capitalist state would have a degree of healthy skepticism, fear, etc. between the governors and the governed. Not blind adulation and boot licking like you appear to subscribe to.
