Also lost in all this is how unprepared IU looked from the very first play. IU gave up a pretty decent kick off return to start the game and were completely unaligned on the long touchdown run a few plays later. Love what Tom Allen has done to turn the program around and to this day has deserved every penny he's gotten, but #LEO and all this rah-rah is only going to last for so long. It's a lot easier to ruin 12 months of momentum than it is to create.

I posted this in the other thread but Oldham County KY needed a game the other day. They are close by. It could be a good game too.

We have been fortunate, we’ve only had one game cancelled due to COVID and we were able to fill it with a game that needed emergency officials. We even ended up with two games a couple of weeks ago with the weather issues. I know a crew out of Columbus who didn’t work their first game last year until week 5.

That's how my predictions usually turn out too. That 2018 game was the "dart" game, when a few MD players had the brilliant idea to snapchat pictures of Branson Combs and Michael Lindauer with darts in their faces the week of the game. Of course our kids printed them out and had them all over the locker room. Branson had 5 catches for 200 yds & 3 TDs (74, 24 & 55 yds.), plus a pick 6 (all before halftime). Probably the most dominating performance by 1 player that I've seen in my lifetime in the MD-RM series. He reminded me of Jefferson in Fast Times at Ridgemont High that night... LOL. You are 100% correct... the last 2 games have definitely been very evenly matched and could have easily gone either way. Thankfully we have been much better since we laid the egg in Wk. 1 against Jasper. Getting 2 D starters back against Central who hadn't played the first 2 weeks also helped us. Should be a good game. I haven't seen any film on MD but I know you guys are very, very solid and will be a big challenge. Just wish the game was at Enlow...

After being taken to the woodshed in 2018 @ 51 - 14, MD has given the Tigers 2 very close games in 2019 @ 10 -3 and 2020 @ 13 - 10, but coming up short in both games. I expect another low scoring game this season with both Defenses controlling the LOS...which likely means someone wins 49 - 48 on a missed PAT late in the game; - 8. Fingers crossed, MD finds a way to win 14 - 13.

As long as I’ve been officiating, there has been an ongoing debate about the proper interpretation of the IG rule and, specifically, where does the concept of “duress” figure in to the equation, if at all? So, I will play Devil’s Advocate. Scenario #3: This is where the rubber meets the road, and the controversy begins. Here’s an excerpt from an article by George Demetriou (he’s long been my go-to guy for interpretation of NF rules) appearing last month in Referee: “Where the ball meets the ground is of no consequence unless the referee judges the passer was under duress. Although that term does not appear in any rulebook, it is the embodiment of the motivation to conserve yardage and is indisputably a critical component of the foul. Duress is a judgment call and solely is within the domain of the referee. There can be a foul for intentional grounding to conserve time without duress, but not to conserve yardage — the intent to save yardage is simply not there unless a sack of the passer is likely.” In his publication “Redding Study Guide to NFHS Football Rules,” Demitriou writes that one type of IG is a pass “thrown (under duress) into an area where there is no eligible Team A receiver.” (2020 Ed., p. 34). So, if time were critical in our play, it could be considered to be a foul. But if the QB simply gives up on the play without being in danger of being sacked, it’s no foul, since he was not “under duress.” Here are a couple of excerpts from an article by Bill Lemonnier, one of the most accomplished white hats in B1G officiating history: “When talking about intentional grounding, we use the term “under duress” as a pre- qualifier or requirement for ING to be called. It makes sense... a passer who’s under duress, in trouble or about to be sacked might intentionally throw the ball/pass away to avoid the loss. …” “The next question is if the QB/passer is NOT under duress can he just end the play by throwing the ball into an area where there is no receiver or if he’s still in the tackle box, just throwing the ball forward to the ground and incomplete? And how about the QB/passer who throws the ball high over the end line when deep in the red zone? Most would argue that the passer is not avoiding a loss of yardage when no “heavy rush” is imminent. He’s only giving up the down.” So, using the philosophy these two highly respected officiating leaders say is the proper way to interpret the rule, the answer to Scenario #3 above is: No foul.

Notre Dame has done one hell of a job these last couple of years. They’ll need a miracle to creep into that top 3 elite group but should not be ashamed at all.

Great topic......I spent many years coordinating special teams. Keys to special teams in high school are a reliable kicker/punter, and a reliable returner; a guy who can at least catch the ball in the air. A few years ago, we had a kicker put the ball easily in the end zone every time. The sound of his foot hitting the ball was a different thump from any other I heard in almost 30 years of coaching. We could afford to get a few "program guys" on the kickoff team then. Guys that are a part of the program for their whole career and rarely miss a thing, and worked hard will find a way on the field. I learned as a player that getting a guy a few plays, even on special teams, makes all the difference in the world. Of course there are a few key players that were starters that HAD to be on the field. We were never really deep enough as a program to not have that; even while I coached at Cathedral. Our punt coverage team has often been the most critical, so we would put speed on the field. It was at times a tough sell, but guys loved being returners and gunners. Next to the kicker and returner, the long snapper was huge too. It is a tough skill to teach; and since they are untouchable for the most important part, I put anyone out who could get it there quick. The most fun I had was creating a punt team with the fastest guy on the team, who happened to be the best punter. I lined the guys up in trips open; the line zone stepped right (right footed kicker), and he rolled with the option to run or punt. We even threw a pass in. It was a deadly weapon for the better part of that season, and the kids got fired up for it.

"Lift Every Voice and Sing" seems to roll off the tongue better than "The Black National Anthem." Doesn't really bother me to be honest. The latter title seems to promote division and create more strife. Words matter more so than ever in our society it seems and this is no exception. As for the "messaging", I can also swallow that pill a bit easier now that they are not putting specific names on helmets. Especially, when some of the folks' whose names were being utilized were found to be in the wrong. Terrible decisions and choices often lead to dire consequences.

Reactions from Week 3: No surprises really. I would bet 3 of the 4 games last week, everyone and their mother would have picked Mishawaka, Warsaw, and Northridge to win. All 3 teams looked superior over teams that are obviously behind in talent. The Cavemen dominated Goshen with the brothers Fisher. I hope Justin is healed up and healthy for this week's game. Northridge completely overran the short-handed Warriors. Coach Reutebuch commented after the game how they only had 28 kids on the trip to Middleburry and hinted at having to cancel games in the future. That does not sound good. Warsaw raced out to a 29-0 lead in the first quarter against quite possibly one of the worst high school football teams I have ever seen. I knew things were rough in Plymouth, but sheesh, they might need to be called the Pilgrims the rest of this season. What everyone predicted, the Concord vs. NorthWood game was without a doubt the best of the week. What a start for the Minutemen and comeback by the Panthers. Love that NorthWood decided to go for 2 in OT, and what a way for the home team to stuff that attempt to win their Homecoming game. With all that being said, nothing really changes from my previous weekly recap/reactions. Mishawaka is still the team to beat IMO, especially if the older Fisher is healthy. I would say Northridge has overtaken that #2 spot for now, especially when you look at points scored by SB Adams and SB St Joe in their games not played against the Raider defense. Warsaw is obviously right there with those two, but cannot make any mistakes early against the Cavemen or Raiders. Concord is certainly right in the mix as well. They've got a solid defense in their own right and face NLC cupcakes Wawasee and Goshen the next two weeks. Goshen, Plymouth and Wawasee... I don't know what to say. The Redhawks are probably at the top of the list here and could possibly end up with a 4-5 regular season record with victories over these two squads. I cannot image either the Warriors or Rockies winning a game this season with the exception of whoever wins the NLC Toilet Bowl on September 24th in Week 6.

I tend to agree. The pick sixes make the final score look much more lopsided than it was, but to counter that there were 2-3 other passes that could have been picked off. Feel good week for the Hoosiers with Idaho coming to town. Then the big one against Cincinnati. Need to get up big this weekend and give Tuttle some more snaps...the might need him sooner than they think.

That's what scares me, I don't think Iowa played all that well. Iowa had one big offensive play early, and then after that only accumulated 230 yards of offense. Petras completed < 50% of his passes and they were only 4/12 on third down. Take away the two pick sixes and the third INT right before half that gave Iowa the ball in field goal range, defense only gave up 17 points. Defense did more than enough to keep IU in the game. Penix was bad and the offensive line was worse. Not a good combination for a guy coming off his second ACL surgery. Footwork is terrible on his drop backs and I don't think he's over the mental aspect of really planting and stepping into his throws. Everything came off his backfoot and throws were high and wide. It is only one game but not a huge vote of confidence going forward. Defense in my opinion is good enough to keep IU in most games this year, but they don't have a prayer if they turn the ball over at that rate and are that ineffective offensively.

If Memorial gets lucky and wins this weekend I’ve been told that the west side nut club members will ban them from the fall festival and if any of the players or fans dare try to show up that they’ll be sprayed with ski through a fire hose…this is just what I heard

……far be it from me to discredit the “best team in the state with 17 D1 players”. I think they are the better than “Indinia” University this year. They certainly have more D1 players.

Aside from Sagarin not caring about Class, SAC and SIAC rankings are going to be worthless (except as to the conference internals) until after Week 1 of playoffs. Don’t we beat this same horse to death every years as regards SAC and SIAC (as of last year?) rankings? That said, the SIAC guys “got it” pretty quickly. I think about 1/2 of them are barristers, though. Jeez…imagine a place where 1/2 the people are attorneys…

Lots of young talent on the VL Defense. Seemed most were Sophomores & Juniors on D. DBs are very fast and come up on the run very quickly. They gave MD fits with the blitz the entire 1st half.

Yes, speedy would be pretty accurate. Now that has been put to the test against higher competition no doubt. But they have guys who can set the edge. And their secondary is probably one of the most experienced units on the team. However, we've struggled with some young guys in the front 7 so far this year. But one thing you can count on with a Coach Salters' (he was a middle linebacker back in the day) squad is a hard nosed, hot pursuit defense, and the unit you will see improve the most year in and out. The problem the past two years has been the amount of time the defense is on the field and just wearing out.

I don’t like the word “soft,” since to me it implies less than 100% effort, and I wouldn’t accuse someone of that just because of the style of their offense. But there is no doubt that the game has changed dramatically. It’s now much more of a scheme, matchup, one on one game than ever before. Now, it’s all about getting the ball to players in space, so they can make a big play. Reminds me a lot of MLB these days, where record numbers of homers are being hit … along with record numbers of strikeouts. Both football and baseball now live by the big play. I halfway think that the reason is our video game, internet, text message, social media culture simply lacks the patience, and the attention span, to be effective at doing it the old way.

Parke Heritage is just dysfunctional. No discipline or grit. Lack of effort by the rejects that came from TH or wherever. Zero clue about proper placement of defensive personnel, and defensive scheme equally bad. All of this coming from a team led by a HOF coach?? Someone please tell me the last time a Coach Moore team won a game they weren't supposed to win. Embarrassing performance. Forget about it. If you want to talk PH Athletics, stick with Basketball. On a positive note, I guess they are the best team in a bad version of the WRC this year.

The "better coaching, training,..." comment depends entirely on the college in question, esp when it comes to education, often an after thought at many colleges. There are some high school programs whose facilities and staff can go toe to toe with many mid-level colleges, esp in Texas and down south in SEC country. Much is being made of "NIL" $ but when the dust settles, those who make real money - defined here as $25k/year, the avg difference in annual earnings btwn someone with a high school diploma and a Bachelor's degree, will be few and far btwn, IMHO. I may be wrong, won't be the first time. Your comment seems to assume there are no "selfish" college programs and coaches who care more about their needs than the needs of the recruit? Color me skeptical. College coaching staffs have far more to lose $$$ from underperformance than HS coaches. That certainly seemed to be the case of the young man who went to IU. IU needed a PG so they convinced him to come early, it did not turn out well. Who loses the most in this scenario, the athlete or the program/staff?

What? I want kids to enjoy their senior year of high school. Those memories will outlast their playing career. I also want to make sure they are mature enough to handle what awaits them on a big college campus. Selfish? Hardly.
