This coming Saturday, Notre Dame will host Navy in the renewal of an intersectional rivalry that was played continuously since 1927, except for last year due to COVID. And every year people ask “ Why does ND still play Navy in this era of playoff football where quality wins can be gold?” The answer is both simple and complex. The short answer is that the University owes the Navy an honor debt that can never be repaid. Notre Dame will play Navy as long as Navy wants to play Notre Dame. That is absolutely written in stone for reasons that have nothing to do with rankings, bowl games, or championships. I will be in the house Saturday, as I have been for many of these over the years. I intentionally got tickets in the south end zone, as close to the Navy section as possible. Their people are just outstanding. And if you’ve never seen what happens at the conclusion of the Notre Dame - Navy game, well, all I can say is there is no scene like it anywhere else in college football. I love big time football, the big Bowl games, the playoffs, etc. But for me, this game is the pinnacle, because it represents the pure spirit of college football. Go Irish! Beat Navy! … and then honor them as they deserve.

Agree although Culver’s style and NJ big win hangover could factor early Also think NJ should make SS Have seen AC play Eastside, Busco, Swood and not seeing the slam dunk AC in the Can. AC looks pretty small and NJ physical style might just get it done

Hatchet alum (c/o 2013) here ready to answer all your questions/comments about our lovely little stadium. Let me first establish that football and marching band are the only two programs that use this facility. Soccer has their own facility/complex with the baseball and softball programs on the West side of town. Track has their own facility not too far away from that behind an elementary school. We don't have a lax program. Recent upgrades to Hatchet Hollow include new visitor bleachers within the past two years (they were literally falling apart before hand) and the aforementioned usage of the refurbished turf to cover the concrete track. Other than that, some home stand painting and maybe some replaced lighting and upgraded sound system, although our PA guy can go kick rocks for all I care. No personality as an announcer and has some family beef with me. But, that's not for this discussion. Last year there was talk and a referendum put up to build a new junior high on some farm land purchased near one of the current elementary schools. It would have included a new football/track facility and alleviated some issues with lack classroom spaces. This referendum was then voted down, leaving our program to continue to call Hatchet Hollow home. I wasn't too sad to hear this news as I enjoyed my time there, but I'm not ignorant in knowing that upgrades are needed in order for Hatchet Hollow to fulfill its potential as one of the most intimate high school football settings in the state. One of the best qualities Coach Morris brings to the table in my opinion is his qualities as a salesmen. Year 1 he reached out a bunch of us alums and set the path down for injecting us into the program more than we have ever been (or at least in my case). It was easy to to relate considering he's a Hatchet alum as well. He discussed his vision for the program and how our involvement as alums is vital in the development of the program. You look at some of the successful programs around SW Indiana and how active their alumni base is (Reitz, Mater Dei, Heritage Hills just to name a few) and we've been playing football just as long if not longer than some of them. It's no different than college: get the alums involved/engaged and good things tend to happen. The first goal in maximizing Hatchet Hollow's potential is definitely ripping up that concrete track, the terribly placed drainage grates (where I witnessed a teammate DESTROY his ankle during a 7on7) and the instillation of turf. While my involvement with the program is entirely hands off since I live in Louisville, KY, I've always dreamed about Hatchet Hollow getting turfed up to the home stands kinda how the Reitz Bowl is. The teams are also in need of a new locker room space. Current one isn't bad, but a new one would look fantastic just outside the West end zone where they used to have a film tower that's now torn down. That would allow the junior high to move to the current varsity locker room. The home bleachers also have space underneath them: however, I'm not too sure how much of it is actually usable. Another upgrade that is sorely needed is a new weight room. They have a dungeon down in the gymnasium that has been outgrown in my opinion, even when I was there. Dark, damp with old equipment they've had to made due with. I believe there's enough space to build a facility in the area I mentioned above to build a combined weight room/football locker room right at the field. I know for a fact that these renovations listed above are on Coach Morris' to-do list. I believe they'd breathe life into the program never seen before.

Disagree, even when they have a play maker the MO is always the same. Move the chains, eat the clock. Noone will turn down big chunk plays but they most certainly desire a short game and coach Wilkerson will tell you that straight to your face. They block well, tackle well and special teams is clearly a huge focus.

Thank you for your responses...I try not to criticize referees as they are doing a job I would never want to do. High School sports does not function without their sacrifice away from their families to call games. I just was looking for some perspective and your answers gave me that perspective. So thank you to all three of you for your answers. And if you are or were referees, thank you for your service. We can scrub this topic off the site now if moderators want to do that.

My guess would be it's a combination of the following: Who do you have offers from? Have you attended National / Regional camps where the recruiting guru's have seen you? What schools have you visited and has a rivals/247 writer covering that school wrote about you? It's alot easier to say the kid with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Oregon (i.e. National Recruit) is a 5 star and the kid with Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky, and Missouri offers is only a 3 star. Doesn't necessarily mean the 5 star will be better in college. A good local example is James Aldridge from Merrillville. He shot up to 5 star status when USC, LSU, Notre Dame, etc. wanted him. I don't even think he had 100 total rushing yards in his career at Notre Dame. Hypothetically, my guess would be that if the kid in question from Gibson Southern officially visited Purdue AND the visit was covered by Gold & Black Illustrated he would be added to the database as a 2 or 3 star recruit.

Well stated. Took our son to a ND Army game several years ago....Wow, just wow. This was back in the Brady Quinn days and for an overmatched team, Army hung tough. But to be in the stadium with the cadets, Army mule mascot, the respect of the ND fans for the Army fight, etc. was incredible. The pre-game had a C-130 type plane fly overhead with a bunch of Golden Knights jumping out. All of the Knights landed squarely in the center of the field...the last one with the USA and state of Indiana flags (yes he was a Hoosier) carrying the game ball and handing to the referee. The place was electric. As the game ended, just like Army/Navy, the victor sang second. Army sang to their fans first with ND players behind them, Then ND players ran to the opposite side of the field, with Army players behind them. ND sang to their student body, with Army there with them. Then, they all mingled hugging each other. It was beautiful. Been to many, many college games.....none better than that one. Enjoy Bob....

Then sectionals we are ready for the 5 wide and they show up in wishbone! HH is a heck of a program and they will come ready to play!

I would say that with their success last year and with how they’ve handled their business this year in their conference, that makes them appear to be the best team in 2A. Sometimes games don’t always turn out the way they are expected, so we’ll see what happens. Trust me I hope I’m wrong and my Eastbrook Panthers can pull out wins the next four weeks.

I wasn't sure how bad I wanted turf until we had it. Not only does our High School, Jr High, and Youth football programs (k-6) use it but it is also been used by our baseball team, our soccer team, our wrestling team (yes they put mats on the field on a pretty day many a times,) our softball team, our track team (great for kids with shine splints,) our PE classes, heck some of the other classes have used it for class on nice days, and our community (events, personal exercise, movie nights, etc.) The field has people on it all the time!! It's great to see

The game we had hoped would happen has come to fruition. Eastbrook wanting to avenge an early exit from the tournament last year, Tipton wanting to prove that last year wasn't a fluke and that they are the Panthers Kryptonite. #1(2) Eastbrook at #6(8) Tipton. This Eastbrook defense seems to have a chip on it's shoulder, not just 1st string, every string wanting to prove a point. Bend a little and break you more. Can count on one hand how many TDs they have been allowed this season by the starters. Offense, they run the ball, but as people are finding out they have passing threat now also. Brings a great dynamic to an already high powered offense. Tipton also looks to be well rounded. QB that likes to throw and a very good RB. I know that the coaching staff will have them well prepared and ready for this rematch. Eastbrook still to much, running clock streak may end tonight. Starters play all 4 quarters. Panthers win by 20. Sectional championship on the line. Coach Adamson's 300th win on the line. Season on the line. Can't wait for Friday Night!!! Good luck to both teams. "Back when I played" we used shoes with removeable cleats. We had two different lengths for sure, and I seem to remember possibly three. Only downside is sometimes one would back out. Played/practiced more than I care to remember on wet/muddy surfaces. Survived just fine and absolutely loved it. Turf vs. no turf sometimes seems like a first world problem to me. But I understand, the game changes based on the type and quality of playing surface.
