Best way to even the score when you are hosting "Dirty, Cheatin' Catholics" at your facility is to make sure to have a Fish Fry, but lose the utensils. True "Dirty, Cheatin' Catholics" can't resist a fish fry during tailgating, even outside of Lent, and will eat the fish with their fingers; making it harder for their receivers and backs to hang on to the ball.

Nationwide there are states with far less schools and smaller populations that have qualifying formats. Wyoming has a qualifying format. As does Alaska. They have a qualifying format because teams that go 0-9 don't deserve to play a postseason game. Cambridge City Lincoln is the lowest rated Sagarin team in the entire state. Not only is CC Lincoln playing in the postseason, they have a first round bye. That's an utter travesty.

Maybe playing a tougher schedule better prepares a team to handle adversity, whether it be the opponent or bad weather. What is that line I see on here sometimes about ifs and buts being my aunt's candies and nuts and my uncle having a wonderful Christmas?

I agree it would be great to make these games really exciting. That being said in reality the reason why States like Ohio and Texas have a qualify tournament isn't really to make football better and more exciting although that is the bi-product of having the qualify. The true reason these states have a qualifying format playoff instead of a post season tournament is because the have so many schools playing football they have to have a qualifying format. In all honesty Indiana with 330 football playing schools that is a lower number that can do an all in format. Ohio and Texas don't have that luxury. While I personally think a Qualifying playoff format would be great I think anyone would have a difficult time getting the IHSAA to do that.

This is a worthwhile effort that, I hope, will drive a stake through the heart of this myth once and for all. I am in lockstep with @Footballking16’s thinking on this issue. But while he is no doubt right in his conclusion, I place more emphasis on what such a qualifying format would do for the regular season. By raising the stakes for many, many regular season games, the whole season becomes more competitive. The level of interest and the caliber of play would rise accordingly. Better for everyone.

The short answer is that large swaths of the faculty and administration have traded in the university’s Catholic identity and mission for the pottage of liberal acceptance and prestige. Father John Jenkins, the university’s president, exemplifies the pusillanimity and self-abasement of Notre Dame leaders. In 2009, Jenkins honored the newly elected President Barack Obama, a champion of the culture of death. In 2016, he bestowed American Catholicism’s highest honor, the Laetare Medal, on then-Vice President Joe Biden, another abortion supporter. Hope the liberal head-pats are worth it, Father! The deeper answer has to do with the generational crisis in Catholic education. In 1967, leading Catholic educators—including then-Notre Dame President Theodore M. Hesburgh—declared themselves free of “authority of whatever kind, lay or clerical, external to the academic community itself,” in what became known as the Land O’Lakes Statement (the position paper was adopted at a gathering in Land O’Lakes, Wisconsin). Formerly, Catholic education drew on the classical tradition, which held that the educator’s role is to help students learn to love what is lovable and contemn what is hateful or wrong. Free inquiry and free speech, in this telling, weren’t absolute masters, but servants that had to be carefully restrained to yield good work. The Land O’Lakes signatories sought to unshackle themselves from these precepts, and behold what they wrought. At many Catholic universities, including increasingly at Notre Dame, the “liberal arts” mirror the narrow specialization, technocratic blandness, and haphazard quality of their secular counterparts. Can't punish Bishop Luers with a two win season when three of the teams they play are in 6A, three are in 5A, two are in 4A, and one is 3A. If you want to go by win/loss records, then the only wins that count are the ones in your class or above. In this example, Luers would be 2-0.

Not to mention there are probably more Catholics on GS team (or HH for that matter) than Chatard's.....sorry, couldn't pass on that one, all the Chatard folks don't get too wadded up... Everybody wants Bama, until they get Bama. We have had a bunch of close heartbreakers with Chatard over the years and just one win. Frankly, it doesn't bother me at all when they are in 4A, makes 3A more interesting. Be careful what you wish for. Playing Chatard in the regular season and the postseason are 2 different animals.

Well, 2 people want change, neither of whom are affiliated with the athletic department of an Indiana High School. If the schools themselves want change, they should petition the IHSAA and put it to a vote among member schools.

Seeding the sectionals 1-4 in 5A-6A and 1-8 in the remaining classes would be the precursor to a qualifying format the cuts the field in half at the conclusion of the regular season after a tenth game is added. A qualifying format that uses a rating system that factors in W-L, opp W-L, SOS, and opp SOS will give weight to smaller schools who play in larger classes. Luers and Mater Dei are prime examples. 4-5 Luers finished 8th in 2A Sagarin despite going 4-5 and in previous tournaments as recently as 2019 and 2020 qualified comfortably despite going 2-7 and 3-6.

Just curious, is this an argument to qualify for the tournament or just for it to be seeded? There seems to be a bit of both sentiments in the comments. I think seeding is probably a good idea, but all teams should still participate. Keep in mind several conferences that cover 3 different classes, a 1A school might be getting beat up by bigger schools and then make a run in the tournament.

Agree with everything you said. I think higher strength of schedule is definitely a benefit in a vacuum. Playing better competition and having to win tough games will help you when you get in that situation during the playoffs, all else equal. But I think you also run the risk of more injuries and you may come out of it worse than when you started, especially for 3A schools who don't have the same depth as 5/6A schools. I know Chatard has several starters out right now, although not sure for how long, but that could prove to be a negative of playing the schedule they did. But at the end of the day, it's about the dudes, like you said. If you've got the dudes, it doesn't really matter who you've played. 2015 GS team is a perfect example. They had the dudes and Chatard's strength of schedule would have made no difference. The only thing that could have stopped that team from beating Chatard was an act of God, which is why I'm grateful we are a Catholic school (only kidding, tons of respect of GS and know that outcome would have been different).

End of week 8 up until kickoff of the opening round of sectionals always brings up the qualifier debate, one I'm deeply passionate about. One of the biggest talking points for keeping the all-in is this roundabout myth that bottom half Sagarin teams flourish in the state tournament. Short answer is....they don't. If sectionals were seeded accordingly it would only further my point that a qualifier that cuts the field in half at the conclusion of the regular season is more than an appropriate measure for the IHSAA to put out a more competitive and exciting product come tournament time. I have decided to once again track every postseason outcome (especially games that feature a top half Sagarin rated team vs a bottom half Sagarin rated team), and if history repeats itself, will only It's been awhile, but since my AD is on vacation and won't chastise me for posting what I think here here is my thought. We should take our sectionals and play a round robin. Then seed the sectional from that data. The last games of the season would be against a natural rival who lives close by. I would love to see our Rockies take on the Glenn Falcons or the CMA Eagles. Both of those game make more sense than the current games against East Noble and Kokomo. Each school still gets that one opponent who they love to hate or just have someone who isn't too far away and save the kids a trip. But more importantly you get true seedings for the sectional. After that play the rest of the rest of the tournament on the home field of the team who plays the least number of away games as we currently do. Or if you want to use a computer ranking then let the sags determine the home team. Having coaches vote is not the answer. I agree with FootballKing16 in that the bias would creep in and not give a best case seeding. Let's be honest, the conference championships are a joke because in most cases the same teams win them every year. So drop conferences and play a round robin in each sectional to seed the tourney. How much fun would that be?

Irish can still make something if this season. Three legit squads left on the schedule (2.5 I guess with Syracuse). Can they get at least one of them?

ND is never the place to give untested coaches their first stint as a head coach. combine that with poor coordinators and you get losses to Marshall and Stanford they didnt change anything from Ohio State second half meltdown and never changed anything after Marshall debacle. Still refuse to challenge a defense vertically and continue to play 100% nickel and dime on defense. I fully expect the same going forward

Bobref is always beating the drum for playoff qualifications, but in the same breath speaks about the lack of officials. With a tourney cut in half (potentially), you would have a REAL officiating problem. Folks who are not getting tourneys will continue to quit.

It stays a tie for the crown. Preseason predictions really turned out to be true. Valley certainly missed Wade Jones on Friday with his hernia injury. All the credit to the Knights for their big plays. Jones was on the sidelines of the Purdue game Saturday night. Preseason predictions held mostly true. Probably biggest surprise for me was the improvement of North Miami. Now on to the postseason. Let's see if the conference can advance more than 3 or 4 out of the first round. 2 intraconference matchups so at least 2 will advance.

It's going to fail by at least a 70-30 margin. No way it's going to go. Even a lot of people in the northern part of the MSD district are ardently opposed. There's a few people running for board seats on an "anti-merger" platform.
