  3. Without knowing the blocking schemes, et al, it looks like the Wing-T, jet sweep and I-formation had a baby and called it the Fly offense.

  4. He usually waits until later in the week to post, or so it seems. Far more than the avg GID poster, he tends to think over what he says and how he says it - lest he offend someone and create some bulletin board material for LS opponents. Always enjoy reading his posts and summaries of the Miners.

  5. After so many years as a Referee, I habitually count the offense every play when I see a game in person. It’s kind of an annoyance.

  7. In fairness to the offense sometimes they fake the jet sweep and run Iso or trap or even a pass play!

  9. I was there. I'm going to try to keep this diplomatic and not be too critical. Bottom line Merrillville looked asleep at the wheel on offense, both the players and coaches. Seemed like the coaching staff was more concerned with making sure everyone touched the ball instead of feeding the ball to their best players, and for their part, the players looked like they thought that no matter what happened they were going to win in the end, and you could tell that by their shock when they ended up losing. No one in the entire town of Valpo could cover Roche and it was obvious from the jump, he had 2 TDs and over 100 yards receiving, but none of this production came in the second half. Don't even think they tried throwing him the ball in the second half. Even more head scratching was that they didn't start feeding Marshall until about 5 minutes left in the game. Again, seemed like the coaching staff was more concerned with making sure everyone got a touch and just assumed they would win in the end no matter what. The coaching staff also looked over-confident in regards to the decisions they made; with 2 seconds left in the half in a goal-to-go from the 4, they tried lining up in wildcat (after already being stuffed the previous two plays) and got stuffed again instead of taking the field goal to go into half 17-9. Obviously hindsight is 20-20, but if they take those points they win, and Seiss even said postgame he made a mistake there. Either way I think that just showed a lack of respect for Valpo and that stop was a huge momentum swing going into the break. Overall it was the same story with Merrillville that it has been the last few years: a clear overconfidence in their own abilities and a lack of respect for the abilities of their opponents.

  10. Whiteland is a run heavy offense. They will pass on occasion when needed. Their offense is an unconventional offense that not a lot of teams see. Their Head Coach, Coach Fisher is well versed with a group of coaches teaching the offense they run. It is called the Fly offense, most teams haven't seen it and if ran well it is a tough offense to defend. There use to be a couple but haven't seen any in awhile.

  17. Was busy over the weekend and just catching up….OV lost?!?!? i know nothing of Monrovia other than I think they used to be 2A? rooting for Lawrenceburg just because I’m tired of seeing them produce great teams that fall short. It’s their time to have their cake and eat it too

  20. Why do we still do "All City"? Not putting it down in any way....I just have never had anyone who could really explain it to me. What's the point, I mean your conference is your conference? Wasn't Castle the only team excluded for years....that just seems weird to me. They might be a great reason, I just haven't heard it.

  21. Whiteland rolls as long as they get off the bus ready to play. There are FIVE Mid-State teams superior to Castle.

  24. The Ville wasn't anywhere close to what they were the past two years, but they were still solid. Valpo lured the Pirates into playing a slow defensive battle that played right into the Vikings' hands. As for LaPorte in 2014, Boilernation pretty much summed it up: A team with a great running back and a wily old coach in his last run got hot at the right time. The DAC was also almost exclusively a 6A conference at that point so the Slicers were used to playing up in terms of competition. Add in the fact that they were playing for a fallen teammate that year and you have the right cocktail of motivation and players for a surprise run.

  25. Fully understood - New Pal will play anybody anywhere, too (as evidenced by scheduling Center Grove & Westfield) and expect to win every Friday night. But as someone who is interested in class alignments and who gets the Success Factor bump, that was just something I found intriguing. Cathedral has proven it can compete and win at a 6A level (just as New Pal proved pretty well it can compete at the 5A level, especially as evidenced by 3 State Finals appearances in the eight years it was in the class). This will be a dynamite game this week. The problem with UIndy is needing to put high school hashmarks and goalposts on the field. I know other tourney games have been held there (especially Scecina hosting a few games there), but it's not a great spot. The visiting side is also *very* small (and much smaller than Tech's). Cathedral has hosted games at North Central, too, which also has plenty of accommodations for a large crowd (and a better press box). But Tech is a good stadium and much more centrally-located.

  26. I'll happily take WL or Chatard by 3 TDs over Lutheran, and that's no disrespect to the Saints (I think that could even be being kind to them). Monrovia is a great story but imo them being in SS is more of an indictment on the strength of 3A South this year than anything. I think Lutheran could win 2A but truthfully think it would be a toss up with them vs any of the 4 teams in that class left. By-far their closest games have been against 2A teams that are already knocked out. We haven't seen the Saints vs any good 3A+ teams the last few years, as opposed to 3 of the 4 remaining 2A teams. This. The caliber of line play as you increase classes is generally night-and-day. Lutheran might have the advantage in skill but Valpo has excellent size and is extremely physical. I have no problem where Lutheran is ranked here, I usually hate the arguments you sometimes see from people that the Top 25 should all be teams from higher classes. Again, this is really all just a testament to how good of a program Lutheran has built.

  27. Stats aside, its going to come down to how the Jays react in the big game atmosphere this year. Last year, they showed up and it seemed like the moment was too big for them and they layed an egg (pun intended). How are the kids and coaches going to respond to that?

  28. No dog in this fight, but Sagarin seems to think Lutheran would be ~11 point favorite on a neutral field. Seems to be right more then not.

  29. Best of luck to both Lawrenceburg and East Central this week. I would have liked to see these teams match up later in the year compared to week one. Lawrenceburg giving up an average of 6 points a game vs West Lafayette scoring 47 a game could be pretty fun. How many of those TDs scored against the Tigers were given up late too? Kudos to the Tiger staff. On top of that, Roncalli once again at East Central after winning in St Leon 21-19 earlier this year. Would love to see both EIAC teams in Indy next week.

  30. This is a puzzler for me. 3 times in the past two seasons I have seen the following play resulting in a penalty enforcement mistake: QB A1 passes to A6 for a TD. During the play, B4 is flagged for defensive pass interference against A6, who managed to catch the pass despite the interference. In each of the 3 cases, R signaled the penalty as declined, and counted the TD. The amazing thing about it was each of the crews I saw do this was a state finals level crew. One of these instances was in a state final at LOS! Of course, the correct enforcement is to offer Team A the option of enforcing the penalty half the distance on the try, or 15 yds. on the subsequent kickoff. This is not a new rule, and for the life of me I can’t understand why it is mis-enforced so frequently. So, let’s review. This is what the rule says: “ART. 2 . . . If an opponent of the scoring team commits a foul (other than unsportsmanlike conduct or a nonplayer foul) during a down in which a touchdown is scored and there was not a change in possession during the down, A may accept the results of the play and choose enforcement of the PENALTY [sic]: a. On the try, or b. On the subsequent kickoff.” Take note that the penalty does not carry over to the first snap of an OT period since there is no “subsequent kickoff.” In that instance, it can only be enforced on the try. The same options exist on a play where a TD was scored and there was a change of possession during the down, e.g. a pick six, provided the foul by the non-scoring team occurs after the change of possession. If the foul occurs before the change of possession, the scoring team must decline the penalty to keep the score. If there is a foul by the defense on a successful try, or field goal, the options are the same, except the penalty does carry over to the first snap of an OT period. That’s because the wording of the rule as it pertains to trys and field goals is slightly different: “If during a successful [try or field goal], a foul by R occurs, K is given the choice of: a. Accepting the penalty and replaying the down following enforcement; or b. Accepting the result of the play and enforcement of the penalty from the succeeding spot.” (emphasis supplied) Note that after a TD, we carry over to the “subsequent kickoff,” while on a try or field goal, we carry it over to the “succeeding spot.” While there is no kickoff in overtime, there is a succeeding spot. So, coaches, what should you do if you pass for a TD and there’s a defensive penalty, and the Referee simply signals that the penalty is declined and the score is counted? Go immediately to the wing official on your sideline and say the following: “I request a timeout for a coach-official conference to review a possible misapplication or misinterpretation of a rule.” The relevant rule provides: “When a time-out is so granted, the referee will confer with the coach at the sideline in front of his team box in the field of play. If the conference results in the referee altering his ruling, the opposing coach will be notified, the revision made, and the time-out shall be an official’s time-out. If the referee’s ruling prevails, the time-out remains charged to the team requesting the time-out for the conference.” If the team requesting the conference has no timeouts remaining, and the Referee’s ruling stands, it’s a 5 yd. delay of game penalty. I’d enjoy hearing instances where you observed fouls on scoring plays and what the subsequent enforcement was.

  31. I care. Sometimes when a team is struggling to win important post season games, like Memorial, it’s nice to know Tiger fans can celebrate the Cake-eater trophy in the off-season.

  32. a few things. 1 we got a bit more healthy. 2. while injuries were happening, we found kids that could do the job.. 3. moved some kids around once back and found a good formula for our offense. 4. Most teams in the playoffs dont see our offense. 5. we have played some REALLY GOOD teams in the ICC. 6. we as a coaching staff found a way to convey to this team that this is it, when our back are against the wall, this team figured out how to fight. So thats what were doing.

  36. How about we found the right formula for our team to succeed, got a bit more healthy than what we were. And our offensive scheme is not something most teams see. And our defense has been playing alot better, since we have started 2 Freshmen and Sophomore at LB all season. Including another Freshman on the Line. WHY NOT US?

  38. It’s ridiculous to call New Pal a paper tiger. There’s no way you’ve seen them play if you think that. They are monstrous. Literally. They were the most physical team I’ve seen in a long time - like old school GCL mean. There are only a handful of teams in the state that could compete with them and none for which a victory could be assured ahead of kickoff.

  42. At the end of the day, an all in tournament that is either partially or fully seeded with neutral sites for regional and semi state games is the answer. You only need 24 locations for regional and 12 (which could be half of the same regional locations) for semi state games. Partially seeding also allows for the random draw the IHSAA loves so much. All in leaves zero argument as everyone had their chance to get the job done.

  44. There’s nothing wrong with the thread title. Monrovia was the only sectional champ to be ranked outside the top half of Sagarin. They are an extreme outlier in this case study. Bottom half Sagarin rated teams went 2-76 in the first round against top half Sagarin rated teams. That’s par for the course. Monrovia didn’t factor into that first round figure because due to a flaw in the postseason format played the worst team not only in their sectional, but in 3A. Props to Monrovia for continuing to strap it up and overcome, but it doesn’t change the fact the postseason format is broken. The numbers speak for themself.
