What the IHSAA said they were going to do, and what they have actually done are not the same, IMO.

MD had a 3 hour bus ride 3 straight weeks last year (reg, SS and state). Regional they won with a running clock, SS won fairly comfortably. State, they went up the night before so it was no factor. Sleeping in a hotel and playing earlier than normal will effect your routine though (but Drayk Bowen was the reason they lost). 2 years ago, they made the long drive to WeBo and got trounced in SS. This year, another long bus ride to TC and didn't seem like it had much of an effect on them. I think it boils down to how the coaching staff handles the logistics: What time do you leave? Do you stop and stretch on the way? Charter bus or school bus? Lots of things to make the drive more tolerable/comfortable for the players.

First, let me say great job of data mining. Appreciate the work. Very helpful to this discussion. The numbers are what they are, but they don’t speak for themselves. They have to be interpreted. And you’ve overstated the significance of these numbers in your interpretation, perhaps knowingly for emphasis, in order to make your point. If what you are trying to do is determine whether a bus ride of 2+ hrs. is a more (or less) significant disadvantage than a shorter ride, simply using won-loss records won’t do that. For example, Team A travels 2 1/2 hrs. to play Team B. On a neutral field, Team B is 10 pts. better than Team A. They play the game, and Team B wins by 21 pts. The next week, Team A travels 15 minutes to play Team C. On a neutral field, Team C is 10 pts. better than Team A. They play the game, and Team C wins by 1 pt. These data support, but don’t “prove,” that as for Team A, a long bus ride causes them to perform more poorly than a short bus ride, even though they lost both games. Of course, you’d need a lot more outcomes to be able to talk about “proving” something. But the principle is the same. If you want to find out how travel times affect performance, you have to measure the difference between the actual performance after travel compared to the expected performance over travel times. I think this illustration shows how difficult it would be to measure how much travel affects performance, since there are way too many variables involved. Now it’s about time for someone to talk about “common sense” … which is often neither common nor accurate.

Teams 2A-3A and 3A-5A are way too similar competitively. Hear me out. A: Smallest 32 or less schools 2A: Bottom half remaining (add a week to the tournament) 3A: Top half remaining (add a week to the tournament) 4A Largest 32 or less schools That's it. Too many championships are being given out. The final rounds of these tournaments would be amazing. Prove me wrong.

Don't know who you are referring to , but I didn't measure the final scores . I measured my eye test , Cathedral offense came out flat , the defense allowed Penn to move the ball in the first half . Could this of been caused by the 2+ hr drive ? I say it's very possible , but the Almighty Temptster says it's impossible . Carroll on the other hand was very stingy on defense , did not allow Penn to sustain any drives the entire game. The Carroll offense can score quickly ( Like Cathedral).

Who cares about Class A?!? Give them a championship game every 3-4 years in this proposal!

No one in Indy does. Warren’s QB in the tournament played three years at Beech Grove…BD’s QB is from Brownsburg, Roncalli’s QB from Plainfield. I could go on all day. The recruiting argument is as irrelevant as it’s ever been.

Point being Cathedral still won by 2 scores. Measuring final scores 2 months apart between common opponents is a terrible way to compare teams.

Finally heard back from someone who attend this game. Turns out we had 2 OL banged up, and our all-conf JV LB missed the 2nd half.

So your saying all 5 coaches are excuse makers ? I've seen Cathedral and Carroll first hand . Carroll looked like the better team to me .

At the end of the day it's a Jimmy's and Joe's thing. I could see the home team having the slight advantage if both teams were on equal footing, but at the end of the day a 2 hour bus ride isn't going to negate a night and day talent disparity. I think HSE is 3+ scores better than Carroll and at the end of the day wouldn't matter if the game was played in Fort Wayne, Fishers, or on a different continent.

I gave Bobref 135 examples as to why the home team doesn't have an advantage when traveling across town. He gave me 1800 examples as to why they do. You're going to have to do better than that.

Warsaw went 7-2 and didn't beat a soul. They were pummeled by the two hardest toughest teams they played. Warsaw played the second easiest schedule of any 6A team in the state and didn't face a single 6A team the entire regular season. They made it to the sectional final by virtue of playing of playing another team who also wouldn't have qualified under my proposal. In a single elimination format, mathematically somebody had to win that game.

My post-postseason Fridays usually involve pulling out the old VHS tapes of my HS football games, standing in my boxers and pit-stained undershirt, yelling at the screen that if coach would have put me in we would have won state, while a tear slowly runs down my cheek. I still have an empty place on the mantle where my blue ring would be, if coach just would have put me in.

One of my two degrees is from an NAIA university and I'm pretty proud of it. It was more an old rehashed joke about the NAIA's significantly more relaxed recruiting rules, and not a dig at the quality of institutions in the association.

Was fortunate to play for 2 HOF coaches in Chris Geesman and Wally Yeoman . Seen multiple interviews by Legendary HOF coaches Russ Isaacs( Snider), Mark Hoffman(Valpo) and Dick Dullaghan (Ben Davis) spanning multiple decades . Every time one of these teams traveled 1 1/2 - 2 hrs to play a deep playoff game or in some cases regular season , it was almost always mentioned . If long travel times didn't mean anything , I doubt any of these coaches would mention it . I believe long travel times add an extra element for coaches to get the players ready to play .

I found this interesting. The Chargers have played inspired football this season after suddenly losing a teammate during the off season. Best of luck to both teams, but being in the area, I am rooting for the Chargers. Regardless of the outcome, emotions will be high

The Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association runs a pretty good All-Star game up here in Terre Haute. Been very successful for the last 15 years or so. SW Indiana could definitely do something similar. They always play the game the last Saturday in June.

When you have an experience team like Judson has and have great confidence in your maturity of your team, you as a staff can "work" on future opponents and schemes for game you can expect to play down the road. We did this in 2014, played LCC, week 8, learned a lot from that game, and starting that next day Saturday and every practice forward we worked the "LCC Script" in preparations for the showdown in week 14, and sure enough we got there, sprinted to 14-0 1st Q lead, that does not happen if we do not put in all that extra time, older and mature teams/staffs can do this quite seamlessly, @Bobref I believe its a BELL, which going back 13 weeks ago, has since been given a good workout Great small town community matchup here, Im rooting for the JAYS, Region 4 squad with a friend of mine at the helm. Hope they get it done, but as always a this time a year never is easy. Leave you with this: " Big time players, make big time plays, in big time games".

How about we found the right formula for our team to succeed, got a bit more healthy than what we were. And our offensive scheme is not something most teams see. And our defense has been playing alot better, since we have started 2 Freshmen and Sophomore at LB all season. Including another Freshman on the Line. WHY NOT US?

I have been coaching for awhile. That environment at OV was one of the greatest environments I have been to at a high school football event. Wonderful job by OV, great facilty.

As a Chatard fan, it was a lot of fun watching Kolton Nanko (Yorktown) play his heart out last night. What a tough kid who absolutely played his tail off. Not really sure how he kept dragging himself back up off of the turf but it showed a lot of heart. In a dog fight I’d put my money on him as a “last dog standing” every time. I’m sure their entire team gave their all as they played penalty free football (which shows discipline and focus) but he really stands out. That kid has a future in football for sure. Good luck to him and the rest of their seniors and thanks for a fun game.
