  1. My issues with the licensing changes are: 1. It was dirty politics, plain and simple, that got this passed. Most legislators had no idea this was inserted into the bill. It was buried fairly deep (page 17 of a 40 page bill). 2. There is no practical application to be gained from the change for a large majority of teachers. And for those that would benefit from....it is highly likely they have been doing these kinds of things for PD any way.

  2. I realize that I am being sucked in by the resident troll, but I refuse to let the program be spoken of in such a manner. Numbers are numbers, and that is fine, but what is most important is what you don't see in the significance of the sport to the many student-athletes who participate. The community loves football and supports it dearly. Like many rural communities, Madison has been hit heavily by the drug epidemic and has one of the highest rates of suicide in the state (did you read the article??). Football is all some of these kids have, win or lose. If you follow the Hoosier Hills Conference, you will know that the schedule has in fact been adjusted to allow the smaller programs the opportunity to schedule an out of conference game. Other conference affiliations have been considered but such a move isn't as simple as it seems. There aren't many programs in southeast Indiana with which to pair. Coach Morrison is a Madison alum and has been loyal and given everything he has for the program. Someone else will come in and do the same. Regardless of record, these kids and the community will support the coach and the student-athletes that participate. These points have been argued to you many times and you fail to consider anything besides shear numbers. If that is all we ever consider, we fail the young men we try to support with this game. For some schools with very small enrollments and low participation, perhaps it is something they must consider. Madison has nearly 900 students at the high school and regularly has 60-70 kids on the team. Football isn't going anywhere, nor should it.

  4. As long as one party controls the state of Indiana things will continue to go the way they are going: Get In Line!!! Indiana does not have a checks-and-balance system, as the same with some other states. This is not a slap at Republicans or Democrats but how things seam to work. When one party controls everything for several years this is what happens. Just my opinion.

  5. Let me extend sympathies to one of Wabash Valley's good guys. Jim Beery. He was connected with North Knox football and the community for as long as I remember. My dad and Jim were friends from their coaching days. He was a pastor, a sitting County Councilman, a Library Board member, a teacher, a former state finals football coach, and a friend to many.

  6. It is a big hassle. When they ask that question make sure that is one of your questions. So much nice the old way. Once you get on never sign out. That is what I do. I only do it from my phone. It is easier to sign into my bank accounts. Good luck my friend.

  7. No I am not. Yes, a business does exist to make a profit, I get it. But when companies are making record profits and still making cuts, and/or receiving huge tax breaks, whether they are local, State, or even Federal, forcing employees to go on assistance or take multiple other jobs, there is an ethical/moral disconnect. Exactly how does an employer/business earn a profit? Is the owner or CEO solely responsible for earning that profit? If an owner or leaders of a business are living a life of luxury off the backs of their employees who cannot get by day to day, there is a moral disconnect.

  8. At some point the mindset of “find a better job” or “you don’t have to keep working here” no longer works. There are several industries that are experiencing a shortage of workers. I don’t have a set standard of what an hourly wage should be, but I do believe an employer has a moral/ethical obligation to live up to. Because the mindset that if an employer is going to keep an employee on a 30 hour a week schedule, making as little as possible sends multiple messages that lead right to the heart of my point about the breakdown of the family unit. The first message sent is these are the only hours you are getting, so yes, I am aware you have to get a second job to pay your bills. The message also being sent is that it is completely on you as the employee to figure out your health insurance and other expenses, not just for you, but for your kids as well. The last message sent is, yes, we know that limiting your hours keeps you away from your kids while not only here, but at any other job you have to get as well. The fact is that is where we are at as a society. These things were not issues for us growing up or for many people back in the day. Buuuuuut, there were plenty of people back in the day who were struggling in the same situations I have described. When their kids are having kids of their own, then the problem has multiplied to the point where we are now.

  12. I don't know that I completely agree with this particular adage. I recall being without supervision A LOT as a kid, but I do recall realizing that even though my folks weren't there, I was "being watched." I knew that whatever I did had ramifications and accountability when they did get home. I often came home after school and let myself in, getting my own after-school-snack, starting my homework when I had it, getting ready for work when I had it and then getting on my bike or, when licensed, my car and getting to work. On weekends, I'd get up at the crack of dawn and my friends and I would be gone all day "roaming." The biggest thing that I remember/see as a difference between now and then is home accountability. Most of the guys that I hung out with had similar parents and we all knew that, if you got in trouble with the school, the neighbor, the cops, etc., that was going to be the least of your concerns because your parents were going to be 100 times worse. The one kid in our group whose household wasn't that way eventually ended up leaving our group and getting into all kinds of trouble with authority as early as 13 years old and then beyond. He was one of a group of about a dozen of us. Today, it seems to be like, in a group of a dozen kids, 6-9 of them are going to have parents that, when their kid gets into trouble are going to try to claim that their kid is blameless or that their kid shouldn't be held accountable or that it's no big deal. Kids who grow up in that environment tend to see life as having very few consequences and also end up not recognizing levels of response in how they do things. If they are blameless, defended, and exonerated by their parents even when they do wrong, there's nothing that pushes them to think about not doing wrong. Seen this in many cases where parents go above and beyond to try to make it seem like damage done by their kids is nothing and going after the person whose property is damaged and claiming that they are blowing it out of proportion rather than owning up to the damage and holding their own kids accountable. We also see, in the other forum, some of the simplest early forms of this with coaches talking about how parents are quick to attack a coach over holding his own players accountable ... the parents want to exonerate their kid's bad behavior or brush it away.

  13. But... it was on Facebook! Correct me if I'm wrong. But the Total (90) hours for renewal did not change, just the content coverage of some of them? The bill doesn't require an externship, which has seemed to get all the publicity. It was stated as an option, along with the professional development options you highlighted. And 15 hours of PD, does that amount to 3 per year? I think they are 5-year renewals? If given the choice between a continuing education seminar titled "Creating Effective Rubrics", "Learner Outcomes for the 21st Century", or "Job Skills needed for a Global Workforce" - I would choose the last one every time. I think all 3 would be important, but adding the 3rd doesn't take away from 1 and 2. I think it's fair to criticize the manner in which the bill was written and passed. It's also fair to discuss whether work readiness/career preparation is the job of a public HS. Should they instead be focused on a broader understanding of the world and educating future citizens in civic engagement? Those are all good questions. That's my take as an outsider, but someone who does have to get continuing education hours for a professional license. That's less than your 2 cents!

  17. To me, this means your local school district AND the DOE should be working together to provide you with multiple hours of PD training each year that fit this role...in other words, part of your faculty training across the district should accomplish this without need for you to do it on your own. If 3-5 of your PD hours each year were directed towards these topics, anyone on the PGP renewal plan would easily fulfill this requirement. I'm not necessarily a fan of this plan, but I don't think its a "sky is falling" type of problem if your local district gears your PD towards meeting this need. The result is that more and more of your professional meeting time is going to be eaten away by these types of requirements (these community partner hours, ALICE training, suicide prevention, etc) and less of your meeting time will be available to you to actual work on curriculum, planning, etc. my 2cents....likely worth as much or less

  22. I think it is still a ripple effect. Suicide rates are high too. Indiana is one of the highest ranking states for attempts and death by suicide. Columbine put things in hyper focus. People see an avenue to 1. Get the most attention possible. 2. Inflict a large amount of damage, injury, and/or death in a short span of time. Suicide follows the same pattern, seeing friends or family members do it, seeing the attention gained. The common denominator though, as far as the individuals go, is mental health, and/or medications.

Hall of Fame Coach Hall of Fame Dad What a moving tribute by Coach Mannering's daughter and those who did not know what kind of man, Coach Scott Mannering is, this should give you all you need to know. I have been fortunate to have been able to coach against him from his time at Lewis Cass and now at Twin Lakes, he is what this video depicts, competitor through and through but also does not lose sight of his purpose in life. Cheers to you Coach Mannering

  29. You should see some of the things the union has actually kept from happening. The 15 hour externship had been one of them, but dirty politics at its worst pushed it through at the 11th hour; to the point that AFT, ISTA and even the DOE and Dr. McCormick were unaware. That said, I will say that teachers have been their own worst enemies in Indiana. Even after ALL of this in the last 10 years, there are still teachers who will say there are other issues that are more important, and vote for these people any way; which has led us to having a supermajority that cares little about the people of this State. Add to it that a number of districts have been gerrymandered so bad, it literally eliminated competition; further diminishing our voices.

Kids Aren't Rushing To Get Their Driver's Licenses—and That's OK!: https://reason.com/2019/05/14/kids-arent-rushing-to-get-their-drivers-licenses/ Meh, a lot of kids today are happy to "spend time" with their friends via texting, chats, voip, etc. instead of actually you know, driving to each other's homes and being in the same room together. As a parent the only time it aggravates me is when your 20 year old child needs a ride somewhere because they are too lazy to get their license.
