They fail to realize that Indianapolis is a destination point. it’s not just mom and dad, but also grandparents, older siblings, aunts, and uncles, and so forth who are spending a holiday weekend together. They’ve all gathered to watch Johnny play in the state championship. They just want to give him a hug and congratulate him. They may not have the ability to drive back to Fort Wayne, Evansville , Crown Point, etc. it’s no big deal to go back to the high school to celebrate when it is barely past 465. But if it’s a 2+ hour drive away it’s a completely different story.

I don't hate Michigan, but I know someone who hates Notre Dame. It's pretty obvious. Your team's season is over so you're in here pissing on Notre Dame's parade. It's not working. We're pretty proud of our team. The NIU loss is completely irrelevent at this point, they're ranked #4 in the country for crying out loud. Harbaugh is a winner, I don't deny that. But, like Pete Carroll, he's better off in the NFL where coaches, for the most part, are on a level playing field. Look, Harbaugh was desperate. He didn't turn Michigan into the title contender the alumni wanted in the timeframe they were expecting. It wasn't past him break a few rules to acheive his ultimate goal. I'm not saying he's not a good coach, but he's certainly not a Cignetti.

Yea, having gone to Purdue in the late 60's, early 70's, the one thing I noticed was how much Jeff bragged about all of those sectional and regional banners that they had hanging in their gym. It was then that I realized that they only played small schools, on their home court no less, until the semi state games at Mackey. Having gone to Cathedral, when we were put in the old Butler (pre Hinkle) sectional with 13 other teams, you had to win four games just to get out of that sectional. Southport was about as bad. I believe it had 11 teams. Even after the IHSAA put a third sectional in Marion Co, made them all 8 team sectionals, winning three games against that competition in any of those three sectionals was a task. If you did, what awaited were those three winners plus the Anderson sectional winner playing in the regional.

He also never wanted to old Range Line Conference to end when it did after the 1999 season. Westfield and Zionsville were leaving for the new HCC. Wright was really PO'd at Westfield, because Westfield and Sheridan at the time had I believe the second longest continual rivalry going in Indiana. He really took it out on Westfield when they played for the last time in a non conference game in 2004, 53-7 at Westfield.

I I don't blame him, following Brohm turned out to be a mistake. I'm sure he is frustrated. Chris is definitely frustrated with the situation--understandable.

In college, I got a halftime IV multiple times over my career. This was decades ago, but it was done by the team physician. As a coach, I wouldn't look sideways at it, provided it was done by (and at the discreation of) a physician (not just the ATC). And also with the consent of the parents. As I coach, I wouldn't want to be involved in that at all, but I'd defer to an MD saying "the kid needs it, and the parents approve". ETA: in almost 30 years of coaching, I don't think I've ever seen it done. Not saying it hasn't, we've had a few kids over the years that had diabetic issues and always had to check levels, etc at halftime...possible that was something that the team doc might have done if needed. I'd also ask how many HS teams have an actual medical "doc" available to do this.

Exactly. You say it very eloquently. I have to say that basketball still lights a fire in this state like nothing else. I saw Gainbridge full for the 3A & 4A State Championship games in 2023. Southport was full. New Castle was mostly full. People will still come out for great teams and great players (like Flory). It's not what it used to be, but nothing is. I posted a game-winning shot for girls basketball on my Facebook profile and someone came in "Crowd Karening" about 14 years ago. Well, that girls team had won 81 in a row, yeah, people came out to see them! They didn't want to miss it. Great teams can still capture the attention of the basketball casuals more than even football. I think in football, it's more about matchups in Central Indiana. Ben Davis/Brownsburg is usually a great crowd. Ben Davis/North Central...not so much.

Yeah, good points. But Michigan IS Indiana’s best win. Not their fault and I give them a pass on their non-conference schedule because a team like IU should always schedule light in the non-con in my opinion.

Notre Dame has ONE and a loss to a MAC team. I have a great memory of going to Sheridan when Linton went up in 2013. I went up ridiculously early.. they were still in classes when I got there. So I just strolled around the field...took in the sites of Sheridan. .the bell. Finally just went up to pressbox, set up gear, computer, and sat. The door opened and in walked Bud. I had never met him. He opened up saying he liked my Grid posts "Miner Pride"...and proceeded to talk football for maybe an hour... We had been decimated in 1998 semistate by Sheridan. We won both this meeting in 2013 and in Linton 2014. I felt it was an honor to meet him.

Among the reasons football has taken primacy in Central Indiana, "class basketball" is way, way, way, way, way, way down on the list. Honestly, anyone playing basketball in 1995 didn't stop playing in 1998 because "well, Anderson plays Richmond in the sectional instead of Elwood, so I'm not interested in basketball anymore." And anyone born after 1990 or doesn't know anything different. And even in terms of fan interest, people didn't stop going to games because the sectional opponents changed in March. I wrote a long, long piece on this a few years ago, but basically "what killed Hoosier Hysteria" were a couple of things. First, the rise of the NCAA Tournament, which basically sucked all the air out of the room come March. Second, suburbanization and the death of the NCC/factory towns like Marion, Muncie and Richmond that once packed their gyms. Even in the 1980s, most of Anderson's season ticketholders were retired. They died, their kids moved out of town to Carmel and Fishers and nobody was there to replace them in the stands ... or on the court.

Bud’s old superintendent from North Miami, (who stood a foot taller and a hundred pounds heavier) told him he didn’t have what it took to be a head varsity football coach back in the mid 60’s. He kicked that guy’s keister, as well as most of Sheridan’s opponents the last 60 years.

I think what happened is the Mayflowers rolled into town and football became a big deal in Central Indiana. In the north, it always felt more like football country. HSFB was a big, big deal in the Region and Michiana, while the rest of us saw football as something to pass the time until basketball season except in a few pockets (Richmond, Bloomington, Evansville ...). Then, the Colts arrived and football became more of a big deal in the Indy area. Then, some guy named Peyton showed up a decade and a half later. Couple that with the explosion of the township and suburban schools at the same time, and it led to a perfect storm of football's growth in Indy (and, for that matter, you could argue football has eclipsed basketball as the primary sport in a lot of Indy-area communities). I think it's encapsulated by this ... in the mid-1990s, Rex Grossman got in touch with the Florida coaching staff, and Steve Spurrier basically said, "sorry, kid, we don't recruit Indiana." (and then Spurrier saw his film and suddenly, he started recruiting Indiana). Now, there are Indy-area kids all over the place on major programs.

The community is livid right now. The school has essentially been quite throughout this whole ordeal going back to the suspension. The community wants answers, and quite frankly, the school is ignoring everyone.

That top bracket with Penn State, Arizona State and Boise State just seems......wrong. Oregon, Texas and SMU would all likely have a tougher game than Boise will get. Agree on Alabama. I don't think Miami's resume is the greatest, but Bama's loss to Oklahoma is a major blemish. Any of you guys seen SMU play? I haven't. No idea if they're legitimately good or feasted on a weak schedule.

He was a character, that’s for sure. I refereed the 2006 semistate game vs. South Newton. In the middle of the game there was a long pass catch and run down the Sheridan sideline. I saw Coach Bud sprinting down the sidelines, in step with the ball carrier. He tripped, went into a perfect forward roll back up to his feet, and continued on as if nothing had happened. He was 66 yrs. old at the time!

Fort Wayne Catholics thought they’d run the show, But Heritage Hills shouted, “Not so!” The clowns were drunk, the nuns were bold, Hook-ups rumored (or so it’s told). For Luers fans, that might have been bright, ‘Cause their team’s game? A downright fright. StinkTown swears they’ll be back next year, With Tiger BLs and cans of cheer. If Semi-State brings them down south, Expect empty cans and a rowdy mouth! Public schools forever, they do it right, Private school cheaters? Stay out of sight. I expect next year to be another battle. Bloomington South has a young squad that got a lot of good experience. Bloomington North brings back a lot of talented 2026's. North loses some talented seniors but reloads with a talented 2026 class and good 2025's. Should be fun! Good luck to everyone at sectional!

Many great memories of Coach Wright and Blackhawk vs Bombers back in early 2000's. A wonderful Chili pre game with @Ballhawk A Purdue Football Clinic where Coach Wright about choked on a chicken wing when someone at the table was talking about one of their kids running a 4.4 40.......coach leaves, then he mutters, "Brett Law never ran a 4.4, no way that kid is a 4.4". Always competing !! I hope Coach wins another ring with Carmel (if that is where he winds up)
