  1. I imagine that this is DT and Muda when a rural 1A school closes their football program.

  2. I'm not really a libertarian, I'm an independent thinker. My grandmother was a libertarian, my grandfather an independent and both parents independents. I'm a Catholic by birth, Mennonite by choice (pacifist), and aware of other religious, political, economic, and social teachings. I have friends on every continent, apart from the polar one (that I can think of) and genuinely try to think of the world as my home. Now, I'm going to try to ignore the threads that I may be a part of dragging on and on.

  4. 2011, Cathedral at Cincinnati Moeller. Cathedral leads most of the game and the stadium clock goes out late in the game. Moeller scores late in the game for what appeared to be the game winner. No one in the stadium, but the officials on the field, knew how much time was left. Moeller kicks off and it goes into the end zone for a touchback. The Irish have the ball on their own 20 yard line with 17 seconds left, which we found out later. Irish QB Cory Babb threw a long pass downfield and it was caught at the Moeller 23 yard line. Still no one knew how much time was left but we found out later that there was 1 second left. Cathedral place kicker Drake Myers lined up for a 40 yard field goal attempt. It was Myers first varsity field goal attempt. The regular Irish kicker had been excused from the team during the previous week. Well he put the kick right down the middle and Cathedral won 26-24. It was a miracle!

  5. If everyone ignored the continual obnoxious posts about denying student athletes and communities football programs based on poor performance, would the posts go away and eventually die out?

  6. Thanks. This thread has proved my point.

  8. These days, positive threads can be helpful. Describe the best play you ever saw at a high school game. It could have been an athletically superior play, a big play at a critical time, or just something that came unexpectedly out of the blue. Here’s mine: It was the 2006 semistate, South Newton @ Sheridan, in the midst of Nick Zachery’s great run for the Blackhawks. Sheridan won the game comfortably, but South Newton’s terrific QB made it interesting for awhile. I believe he ended up the MVP of the North-South game the following summer. Zachery made a play during the game that I still have not seen equaled on a high school field. He was playing safety and a pass down the sideline was well overthrown. He went up over the receiver, with about a 40” vertical, caught the ball with one hand, and got a toe down inbounds before sprawling out on the track. One of the most remarkable plays I’ve ever seen at any level. I used to have a photo of it. I’ll see if I can find it.

  9. Absolutely awful. And it is going to be very difficult on his friends who can't get together in a large group because now is when they need each other. Prayers to the Cathedral football family and to this young man's family.

  13. It could be done with some planning. Facilities have improved enough to make it possible (turf fields with sufficient seating in both the home and visitor sides). This would have been relatively easy to assign during the 2019 season. This is assuming that the host schools would be willing to do this, but it could have looked something like this: @ Warsaw Valparaiso vs Dwenger East Noble vs Hobart @ Lafayette Jeff Carmel vs Merrillville Eastbrook vs Andrean @ Kokomo Chatard vs Mishawaka Marian Lafayette Central Catholic vs Adams Central @ Warren Central (or Arsenal Tech) Ben Davis vs Center Grove Western Boone vs Triton Central @ Martinsville Evansville Memorial vs Mount Vernon Heritage Hills vs Danville @ Columbus North New Pal vs Bloomington South Indianapolis Lutheran vs West Washington

  14. And if we only have 280 teams the bottom 20-30 would appear to be very bad football programs. It's all relative. No matter how many teams you have there will always be a percentage at the bottom with 0 or 1 wins. I've worked games with many of these teams and for the most part they still have players that play hard and have some talent. Many of them are on your list.

  15. The biggest flaw in your logic is we get down to 280 schools there will still be a similar number of 0-10/1-9 teams and teams with low Sagarin ratings. Then we contract them. We'll eventually have 2 teams left.

  16. https://twitter.com/FSIndiana/status/1200913903963656194?s=20 I'm fully aware of recency bias, but this play in the state finals last year was one of the most amazing runs I have ever seen in person.

  17. Co-Ops are very successful in rural areas of other states. I think it would be a great solution to help those schools with declining numbers or allow students at schools without programs to participate.

  18. Because, in theory, some amount of additional debt could end up being the lesser of two evils, given the extraordinary circumstances. I’d have to see the thinking behind the stimulus to have an informed opinion. That’s why shortcut thinking like “more debt = bad” is just intellectually lazy.

  23. I know this will come totally out of left field, but I don’t agree with this crazy notion either. Why? Because I am alum of a 1A school (guess which one😉) and I can tell you a few things: Football brings people together. Beyond the players who are learning strategy, and team building skills, it allows fans to get together and mingle. It’s also allows small businesses to get their name out. Ancillary services. Band, cheer squads, and athletic trainers all have the opportunity to hone their craft before taking it to the next level. Supporter of other sports. Football as well as basketball are the primary breadwinners in the IHS double A. Therefore the money they take in through gate receipts, etc. will help fund the smaller sports such as wresting which ultimately FB players do participate in.

  25. While I dont agree with the contraction idea, the idea he has that I do agree with is the smaller size in 1A, should be 32 in 6A, 64 in 5,4,3,2 and rest in 1A up to 64

  27. Because you are shifting goalposts. That is what the weak minded often do when they are losing a debate. If your hunch is correct, it would just be mirroring the trend of people moving to urban and suburban areas that has been going on for about the past 100 years. #Expansion

  30. The 75 dress rule for tournament and state finals. I think it’s awful the larger schools cannot dress their whole team once the tournament begins. Especially for the state finals. Seeing those kids not even allowed to be out on the field during the state finals game is heart breaking and just plain ridiculous. IHSAA needs to change this badly!!

  31. North Judson I believe had either 10 or 11 shutouts in the late 70's. Also, the Lafayette Central Catholic Team of 1969 was an OUTSTANDING team. Undefeated. When we played them we were 6 and 0 and they were the same. It was the big game of the year in Lafayette area. They kicked our butts. Lawrenceburg teams of the 80s under Glenn Crocker were also outstanding teams.

  34. The U.S. economy is more than just the stock market friend. Are you saying the Russian/Saudi oil feud/war caused all the small businesses in Indiana to close or for restaurants ban in-person? That in Howard county you can go the Super WalMart to buy a bag of potatoes buy you can't then saunter over to the toys section and buy a couple of new board games for your children? That most large manufacturing in this state and others, employing hundreds of thousand if not millions of people, is currently shut down due to government fiat?

  35. Agreed, it can be dangerous. But to what degree should we trade risk for freedom? "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Benjamin Franklin

  37. Thank you for the the obscent name calling, quite revealing. And yes, I try my best to follow the Zero Aggression Principle. As for Mr. Smith's little missive I don't believe the word "consistently" has the same meaning as "100% of the time". Do you? Are you an "Independent thinker" 100% of the time, Robert? And what exactly is the commonly help definition of the phrase "Independent Thinker"?

  38. No, it's not. Not when you are already trillions of dollars in debt to begin with. Back to Work: America Has No Choice if It Is to Avoid Total Disaster: https://mises.org/power-market/back-work-america-has-no-choice-if-it-avoid-total-disaster This "just shut everything down" mantra by government is the intellectually lazy decision here, not "more debt = bad".

  39. Government shuts down the nation and destroys the economy. That leads to more massive borrowing, aka debt, to fund a record-setting "stimulus" bill that won't even come close to fixing the problem. Will just attempt to make us all more dependent on government, and it's a large scale experiment on UBI.

This Business Is Suing the Government Over a Coronavirus Closure Order: https://reason.com/2020/03/30/this-business-is-suing-the-government-over-a-coronavirus-closure-order/ One can see thousands of these lawsuits, clogging up the courts, if the America doesn't "get back to work" soon. The government is destroying our economy, and our nation.

  41. https://reason.com/2020/03/30/tear-up-your-census-form-for-a-better-america/ I threw about my 2020 census form and did it online instead. And when asked the intrusive, nonsense question of (and I paraphrase) "What is your country of origin" after indicating I was Caucasian I simply typed in "none of your business" for myself and every member of my household.
