I just got a chance to read this and I am so thankful to be able to meet people like this and work with some top notch school systems. A Positive Story.docx In this strange unpredictable world of Covid-19, I have a very positive story I would like to share with you. Last week my team, the Rensselaer Central Bombers prepared very hard for our next opponent, the Lafayette Central Catholic Knights. We were scheduled for a major Hoosier Conference showdown to be played at their place. My team came to school wearing their game jerseys all fired up for the big game. At 9:00am after my first class I teach, our school athletic director, informed me that the game had been cancelled by Central Catholic due to Covid issues. With less than 10 hours to go before kick off, I expressed to our athletic director that I would like to see if any team is out there available and willing to play on such short notice and he agreed. Within an hour we had our opponent. The North Knox Warriors had two games already cancelled on them this season due to Covid. Pike Central cancelled on them for last Friday. As fate had it, by 11am on Friday, our athletic director, Ken Hickman had reached out to North Knox’s athletic director, Kent Doades and the next thing I knew was we would be playing a football game on Saturday. With North Knox being 3 1/2 hours away, the next issue was where would this game be played? That’s where this story gets even better. Covington High School was contacted to see if they would be willing to host this game as a neutral site. The athletic director there, Trent McCormick was gracious enough to accept the game as a neutral site host. So, this past Saturday the Rensselaer Central Bombers and the North Knox Warriors got together in Covington, Indiana and played a 48 minute game of high school football. Both communities came to Covington to support their teams. For two teams that had never played each other in any sport, this was a first. Hats off to all three schools and their athletic directors and administration for allowing this to happen. Needless to say it was a beautiful afternoon of pads popping, fans cheering, and sportsmanship by all. It was a great time by all! I am not going to share the score with you because it doesn’t matter. What mattered was we played! Finally, thank you to all of you at the IHSAA for having the foresight to allow us to play high school sports this Fall. It has meant so much for our student athletes, coaches, parents, and communities. Through your guidance and leadership it is amazing to see us entering Week 7 in football. I’m surprised that someone hasn’t. I was never a believer in school extracurriculars (including sports) as regards keeping kids out of trouble when I played simply because I was never going to get into trouble - it just wasn’t part of my make up. Admittedly, the fact that sports allowed me to go to college was a bonus, though. In the rear view mirror of life, having raised kids and seeing others grow up with them, I now have little doubt that sports and other extracurricular activities are an absolute salvation for many. I’ve seen more than a few kids that fell into the cracks of life once those things were taken away. Frankly, my oldest could have cared less for school and would admit that it was ONLY sports that made him care about his grades. In his case, he cared about grades all the way through college sports and ended up with a paid masters degree as a grad assistant. Honestly, not sure where he would have ended up without football. He was a pretty headstrong (or hard headed..) kid that needed coaches just as headstrong.

If this is the only/worst thing to impact to the tournament this year I’ll take it

I recall a season at Notre Dame when we played back to back home games, first USC and then Navy. Saw a bedsheet hanging out of a dorm window that said: “Burst the Trojans and Bring on the Seamen!” True story.

I guess we have to look at this realistically. It's good that there IS a draw this year. Nothing is certain, even to this point. We should be thankful that we have been able to progress this far and hope that the season can end Thanksgiving weekend as usual. One week at a time!

Obviously, 2020 has presented several challenges, one of which may be determining conference championships. Traditionally, leagues will play a full round-robin or at least the same number of games. As there have been dozens of canceled conference games, unless we hear otherwise, we'll assume league win/loss percentage will be the tiebreaker. For instance, with the cancelation of Gibson Southern vs. Mount Vernon, the Titans only have one PAC Big Division game remaining against Princeton. Were the Tigers to pull off the upset, Boonville (3-1) would share with Gibson and Mount Vernon could also share with a win over Washington. Won outright: Circle City: Chatard (3-0) Won at least a share: EIAC 3A: Lawrenceburg (2-0) EIAC 2A: East Central (2-0) PAC Big: Gibson Southern (3-0) Indiana High School Football conference standings I'll keep this list going over the next few weeks as more conference title races are determined. If you hear that leagues decide to use a different format other than percentage, please let me know.

Don't think they will get Lburg till semi-state, last year they got the winner of sectional 29. Lawrenceburg would play sectional 32 winner (SR, GS,...)

Riverton Parke vs NC - At home or on the Field, We can't score........... 3. Parke Heritage vs North Vermillion - When was the last time Moore beat Crabtree? Never, until this year 4. Sheridan vs Seeger - Bud wipes with Herbs socks 5. South Vermillion vs Fountain Central - I give it 2 quarters before Coach Hall yells across the field about running up the score!

That seems about right, coach. Low-scoring. Merrillville can handle a spread attack and still attack the QB. The Pirates occasionally stop themselves...with fumbles and penalties but its going to be tough for Chatard to score on offense. I dont think Merrillville has trailed at any time this year so if the Trojans score first, the mood may be new for them. But I dont think this is an even match.

Interesting rivalry. According to Sagarin Tipton is favored by 11 plus they are highly ranked and beat a very solid Central Catholic team. I say Tipton 35 Hamilton Heights 7. Then would Tipton represent that side of the conference for the Hoosier Conference Championship in Week 9? I could see them and West Lafayette being a shootout!

I believe Coach Nowlin is referring to the incident in 2005 when Heights beat Tipton in the last couple minutes of a sectional game and a certain mother of a player came onto the field after and planted something on it. To be honest, I can't remember what it was that she planted. I've always thought that time period was when the rivalry was at its peak.

I'd wager to say there are a lot of young men (and maybe some young women too) who need football to keep them in school. If you take that away from them, you are taking away more than a sport.

You're lucky I even got that close. Never had a good reason to go over to HH. What schools are no longer limiting their fan attendance?

Dropping a football program is not the answer and would be doing a disservice to these young men that have committed to a TEAM. If these young men are learning discipline, respect, teamwork, and accountability, this football program is a success. Some of these young men will not be taught these imperative life lessons anywhere else.

Monday was last chatter Today is now THURSDAY!!! So disappointing!!! I would assume Pirates have the Speed factor in their favor, but Chatard is no slouch in that deptartment. Trojans are known for their discipline and very much blue collar in your face brand of ball, but have spread it out some more under Coach Doyle. Pirates have been blessed with some new players making their way into their hallways and are firing on all cylinders it would seem. Pulling kids off the football field in a city such as Anderson means potentially putting them in the streets. These young men need football and ending the football program could lead to much worse.

Agreed. What does it matter that you see your ping pong ball live? You're supposed to be preparing for your next opponent.

Eastbrook isn’t as concerned about winning in Jr. High as much as they are in teaching fundamentals, terminology, assignments, and the right attitude. Sure, kids change in size and abilities, but they all know the system and have the mindset to put the team ahead of the individual. That’s a big factor in their success!

I'll be surprised if that's the only thing they complain about before the week is over. There's always the perennial "Heights players living in Tipton County" story brought up. (There are at least 2 that I know of this year, they're brothers. .) And I always make it a point every year during game week to walk my dog the 100 yards or so into Tipton County so he can leave them a nice "gift".

Which in a written medium like an internet message forum is notoriously hard to detect at times. I suggest you use <sarcasm> and </sarcasm> tags in the future around such statements, it removes such doubts.

Wins and losses, the worst metric for successful coaches and programs. Ron Qualls will make a difference in the lives of the young men he leads.

I have coached at Anderson High School. In my opinion one of the biggest issues with Anderson is the community. They won’t let go of the past. This is 2020 not 1985. Highland and Madison Heights are gone and aren’t coming back. Overall they need a fresh start in all athletics from top to bottom with new ideas and new culture.

I wish it could have worked out that they played Tell City. They will blow out Princeton. That is weird when you say it out loud.

I think there are many other issues at play when it comes to Anderson's athletic success since the consolidation of Anderson Highland after the 2010 school year. First - it is a well known fact that many of those families ended up sending their kids to Pendleton Heights, Yorktown, Lapel and Frankton over them all going to Anderson High School. If you notice, all of those schools have done pretty darn well in football, boys basketball and girls basketball in the last 10 years. As well - there has to be something going on within the Athletic Department and the hallways of Anderson High School. It is still a big enough school to get athletes from and be competitive, but they need the right coaches and enough support to encourage the students to play athletics. Outside of a solid 3 year stretch from the girls basketball team from 2012-2014, here are those 3 main programs records since 2010: Football: 29-79 (0.269 winning percentage) - with 1 winning season Boys Basketball: 71-161 (0.306 winning percentage) - with 1 winning season Girls Basketball: 128-113 (0.531 winning percentage) - with 4 winning seasons In my opinion, it looks more like a culture change that needs to occur within the school building to encourage/promote the benefits of extracurricular athletics while also making sure the programs have the right coaches and enough support to be successful.

Sounds like your line last year was simiular to ours last year too. Here is me holding up the mirror and looking at each other Our left TE was a JV center last year, LT is returning player, LG, was JV player last year, Center returns, our RG is Soph, JV last year, our RT played some as a Soph, sat out all last year and now back this year as a SR, our right TE is 6'5, 340 pound size 17.5 shoe 15 year old along with the other guy rotating in, in his 1st year playing varsity TE. That group, 6 games in is starting to get that synergy we talk about in running this style offense. Timing is everything as you know with this offense.

Yes, I was the coach in charge of pre game setting up the camera's and whatnot, chatting with group of Warrior Coaches well before pre game started. Then I was in the stands in the corner as I am "upstairs"
