Not so fast! Southwood is now testing their varsity players and will be able to play Friday if all tests come back negative.

It isn't as much about affluence as it is human capital. P/Ps will ALWAYS having a higher percentage of quality, results driven student athletes for no other reason that they are paying to be there. They are paying for a certain experience.....it is a transaction that has value for the parents. As with any other transaction for services, there are expectations in quality and performance for both ECA and academia. Conversely, in public schools, a varying percentage of students are there only because the law says they have to be. The result is more quality human capital per capita at a P/P. The example I have used in the past is how Castle and Memorial seem to go toe to toe in both girls and boys conference championships each year within the SIAC and seem to both produce a similar number of top notch athletes in various sports. Castle has 1965 students, Memorial has 609. Our Catholic friends would like us to believe that is because of the blood sweat and tears of their Irish/German ancestry genetically instilled in them a work ethic no mere protestant can match. It's really not that complicated....birds of a feather flock together. The math makes multipliers hard....maybe my friend @Lysander is right, just bump them all up a class.

Let me preface my statement by saying I have no dog in this fight and have ZERO opinion one way or the other if Southwood plays. But, if what I've read in this thread is true, how is this possible and someone please enlighten me? According to every CDC, State and Local Board of Health guideline I've read, a close contact results in a 14 day quarantine, period. A negative test during that 14 day period is irrelevant because close contact individuals are still in a contagious/incubation state. So are the Southwood kids contacts of contacts? That's the only thing that would make sense here. If Southwood plays, good for them. But I feel sorry for all the other teams/individuals who had to forfeit their seasons due to the 14 day rule. If you really want to get people angry, changing rules midstream is a surefire way to do it.

Bad news for some: The state football tournament will not be cancelled. And let's just say, I trust my sources. Unless football players start dropping like flies all of a sudden (which will not happen). From what I know, majority of schools and counties have handled outbreaks fairly well. If teams have to forfeit, so be it, the healthy teams move on and props to them. While serious and unfortunate, the big bad virus that results in an extremely high survival chance does not mean we have to give up, give in and cancel life.

Local schools local control. The IHSAA wants schools to make determinations for themselves, if you make a blanket rule, it opens up the issue of enforcement, which the IHSAA doesn't really have.

I think there is a slight upward trajectory and a large freshman class. I have not heard anyone predict 800 kids although I suppose that is a possibility as I have heard rumors of more Toyota expansion. I would say though there is no danger of 4A any time soon (no success factor jokes here please LOL).

It would be ridiculous to not play....just as it would be ridiculous to not play basketball. By this logic we should never have had any sporting events or gatherings or ever have any again. Live your life. If you don't want to go out, limit that. Nobody is forcing a child to play a sport and nobody is being forced to go watch. I would worry about Counties going to "RED" and if I am not mistaken, RED under guidelines means no ECA for anyone.

We're in complete agreement on everything except whether a compulsory handshake has anything to do with sportsmanship. I'm not against the handshake tradition because it causes trouble ... although it sometimes does. Kids are going to fight sometimes when emotions get high, that's just the reality of it. I'm against forcing people to shake hands with the opponent, because forcing someone to do it cheapens the value of that handshake. As @Muda69 says in his posts: “No action can be virtuous unless it is freely chosen.”

Awesome for southwood but wouldn't it had made more sense to test 1st then say you aren't playing? Little unfair to tell a team on a Tuesday that they have friday off then oops we can play tomorrow.

It's high school. You run what you brung. We have had to play a crap ton of our season without starters because of contact tracing. Not because they were actually sick, but close to someone who tested positive. We didn't cancel a single game. You find a way to win or you lose and move to the next Friday. As a result we are going to have probably the 6th less than .500 season in 40 years, but it is what it is. Play the game, even if some idiot politician tells you that your QB can't play because he was within 6 feet of a positive case. Some schools are making provisions by rotating kids every 14 minutes to get around this, some schools aren't. If Gibson Southern loses #18 due to the 'rona, you think Hart will cry about it....nope, that is a guy that will find a way. Which is the same thing we have done all season, we could have cancelled due to players out, but we played with 3 sophomores and a backup qb in the backfield for a number of games. Play the game, forget the culture of the participation trophy asterisk * crap. And by the way...Gibson Southern folks....I am looking forward to hosting you in the Jungle. We are at full strength this time (almost). Come say hi....I'll be on the chain gang. I'm the good looking one.

I'd wager you can't find a HC in Indiana that would agree with you, especially given the extra reassurance that Southwood doesn't have COVID-19. Every coach I've heard has said they want to play if it can be done safely.

I could not disagree with your statement any more. The post-game handshake is a way to show respect to someone you have been battling and leave it on the field. It's such a teachable moment for the these young people. It is a way for us to teach humbleness in victory and fortitude in defeat. It takes character to do your best, fall short and congratulate your opponent with dignity and grace, even when you are disappointed and may not feel like it. It is imperative that we don't keep skating around things simply because they're difficult. After all, aren't the difficult times the times that teach the best life lessons? Represent yourself, your family, your community, your school, and your coaching staff with dignity. Just because a few idiots can't control themselves doesn't mean we take this out of the game, and all games. If we are truly getting these young people ready for real life, it is so important that we teach them self-control and to learn through tough experiences. I know I'm old-school and I'm good with that. We must guide the person first, and the athlete second. Just one man's humble opinion. I LOVE THIS GAME!

If you are going to make that claim then please include the likelihood of a player's health being negatively impacted. And I don't mean simply testing positive.

Cancellation of the tournament is not an option. I suspect the financial consequences to the IHSAA from the cancellation of the tournament, coupled with no boys’ b-ball tourney last Spring, would be devastating. The economic reality is as much a factor in the decision-making process as any health concern, if not more so.

We are rolling into the tournament with 28 players instead of the 46 we had on our roster Yes, we have contact drills in practice, at the end of every practice, we disinfect all the players shoulders pads and helmets, they have to take home their practice jersey and wash it and bring it back the next day. We spray and santize all our equipment we use such as hand shields, bags, blocking sled bags, et. al. every practice.
