Replay clearly showed that the defender's contact caused the receiver to go out of bounds. Remember, there was also that not too smart interference with a fair catch penalty. Take that away, and Webo would not have been in FG range.

Never let it be close enough for the refs to decide it. Luers beat themselves with penalties at the wrong time. Can not do that in a state championship.

Lysander’s first post really ended this discussion. The Success Factor is the most practical way of solving “competitive balance”. Bumping Park Tudor and Bishop Noll up a class because Cathedral and Chatard are good at football doesn’t make any sense. Let Cathedral and Chatard bump up (because they’re good) due to the success factor and let Noll and Park Tudor continue to try and compete in their enrollment based class.

“Simple” and “easy” are great ... if you’re talking about puzzles. But that doesn’t mean they are “best.” The “best” solution is one that can be implemented easily, sure, but it also should address the problem, and fix it with the fewest negative consequences, i. e., collateral damage. The SF doesn’t “punish” anyone (I think that’s the word you meant to use.). But I understand how using loaded words like that serves your agenda. The SF is an attempt to go right to the “problem” and fix it at the root, not use a broad, non-specific remedy that accomplishes the purpose, in part, but throws out a lot of babies with the bathwater.. The complaint people have about the PPs is that the playing field is not level. But even the most rabid anti-PPers have to admit that some PPs do not use their inherent advantages to achieve football success. If the objective of the class system is for like opponents to be matched (within reason), then only those who use advantages, and are therefore not “like” their other class members should be targeted. That’s what the SF does, and that’s what a multiplier doesn’t do. And logically, there is no justification for not using the SF on publics as well. No one would seriously argue that publics like Munster & Carmel don’t have a significant socioeconomic advantage over fellow publics that translates to higher extracurricular participation rates, better facilities, and if you want to dig deeper, probably better nutrition and health care. Those that utilize these advantages to excell over the long term in football are no more “like” their fellow publics than are the PPs. If they show that they have had disproportionate success relative to their class competition, then obviously they have tilted the playing field. If the goal is “like” vs. “like,” they also should be affected by whatever tool you are using to level the playing field. If your goal is to “level the playing field” as much as possible, then the SF is a far superior solution. On the other hand, if your goal is simply to slap down the damn Catholics, the multiplier is for you. Just adjust the multiplier till you get to the point where the PPs are winning championships at the same rate as the publics, regardless of the consequences to those PPs like Bishop Noll and Park Tudor. Simple and easy, sure. But fair? I don’t think so.

Ineligible receivers downfield was, indeed, a point of emphasis this year, likely because of the increasing prevalence of RPOs.

I’m sitting in the pressbox with half a dozen other observers. Unanimously agreed with the call.

Definite tip of the cap to the 3rd team today. Several bang-bang calls with fumbles/spots. The holding late with the 4th down measurement before WeBo decided accept/decline. And the unfortunate kick catch and defensive pass interference calls that were 100% the right call. A penalty is a penalty whether in the first or 48th minute. The crew was top notch in my book as expected.

Follow me here...If I was WeBo I would have went for 2 there. if they got it, would have only been down by 1 with 1:55 left. I think i'd do the onside which they did. But if Luers recovered, I would have probably let Luers just go ahead and score. They go back up by 8 and you're guaranteed to get the ball back and at least have a chance to tie. May not get that chance here.

Seems strange sitting here this morning and not packing and leaving for the weekend but it is what it is. After attending the finals for 30 straight years, I will be at home watching them on TV while understanding that it is best for me at this time. However, I am optimistic that next Thanksgiving weekend I will be back with my gang spending a weekend watching great high school football.

I'm glad you said that. To make the final game, to me, is 1000% better than losing at the semistate. You and your school and your town got the state finals experience... When you get over what happened in the game, you can rationalize that you lost to the champs.....and you gave it all you had../..

Cathedral “should” have won that game but not quite ready to say Cathedral was the better team. Cathedral played absolutely lights out on defense and their only TD of the game came on a pick 6 to take a 13-10 lead. That being said, CG’s defensive line absolutely dictated that game. Cathedral couldn’t get anything going on offense all night. Fairly confident that if they played 10 times all 10 games are closely contested but not ready to say the outcome is a 50/50 split. What I do know is that both CG and Cathedral are head and shoulders better than anyone else in Indiana.

Question about Center Grove’s kickoff. They feign a bunch middle kickoff, then spread out. If they were to kick it from that shoulder to shoulder alignment. Is that legal? I was thinking that was disallowed a few years ago, along with the high pop up onside.

Look, I'm a Catholic myself, but this stockpiling of trophy cases against competition with disadvantages is a joke. I respect the hardnose, work your butt off Catholic mentality as much as anyone, but the the multiplier (or one class bump up) is necessary.

Agreed. There are 6 categories of DPI when we make that judgement. A cut off is one of them. When I saw it live I didn't there was much there. Then they showed the field level view from the end zone and it was the epitome of a cut off. That category applies when a defender is running down field with the receiver and contacts him in a way that pushes him away from the ball especially out of bounds. It's fair to argue judgement here if that's what happened, but that's what it looked like to me with the benefit of replay. As Bob has mentioned the official who made the call was in perfect position to make the call and because of that I trust his judgement. Rule hasn't changed in a long time. The only way this is illegal participation is if he is knocked out and doesn't come back in at his earliest convenience. He isn't able to do that because he's being ridden out of bounds as the ball is arriving. He would only commit IP here if he goes out on his own and doesn't return or is knocked out by the defender and then runs down the sideline on his own and comes in much later. This crew is from central Indiana and works big games every week in the regular season. They work a heavy dose of MIC, HCC, Cathedral, and Chatard. The BJ worked a D2 national championship game a couple years ago and was available to work with this crew (his original HS crew) because his college season was postponed to Spring. They are an excellent crew and showed it today. They were in total control in a crazy game and made big calls when they needed. There were several crazy things from an officiating standpoint that happened in the last 3 minutes and they nailed all of them. Anybody complaining about the officiating in the game show they know every little about officiating quality. And trust me...the people most critical about the officiating in the finals are usually other officials usually because they are jealous they aren't working.

Oh the irony. Three state championships in a row and a win over a PP ... like the PP part even matters. Let's just call it what it is ... WeBo's done a great job of making things happen when they get to LOS regardless of who's on the other side of the 50 when the coin is flipped. Congrats to the kids and their coaches and the school for not buying into the hype and just playing the game!

Very sad for these Luers kids to have a game be decided that way. I thought when they got the ball back with 1:55 that they shouldn’t of been conservative. Stay true to who you are and drive the ball downfield but hey. Now it’s on to next year, your goal remains the same. This loss should fuel you to be better. This is a great thing for everyone on this thread/forum who hates parochial and private schools. It’s like Christmas come a few weeks early! I’m not sure why there is so much hate, but enjoy basking in it. Much respect to Webo. Hard fought game.

Agree. I thought they should've used a timeout early in half when they had Luers at 4th and 8. That was a huge opportunity to get a stop that they missed. Then I think they should've used their last timeout right before the fumble on the last play. Would've stopped the clock with 30 seconds or so left and given them a few shots at the end zone. Instead they looked rush and that probably resulted in the fumble. I can understand not wanting to burn the timeout in case you got tackled in the field of play but I just think with the time left and the spot on the field, the timeout was the way to go there. Until that point I thought they did a great job with clock management as they didn't want Luers to get the ball back with enough time to do anything.

Really poor end to the half by WeBo. Bad clock management and then a fumble......

I sometimes look at 1a or 2a schools near cities or bigger schools.. Possible advantages. LaVille 15 miles from South Bend Adams, 21 miles from SB Clay and 15 miles from South Bend Riley. 10 miles from Plymouth High School, 11 miles from John Glenn. Look at Eastbrook is near Marion.. As is Oak Hill (oak hill 3a right now) Lewis Cass is 15 miles from Peru, 11 miles from Northwestern, 18 miles from Kokomo high school and 10 miles from Logansport high school. Those are 3 schools I wouldn't mind coaching at if I were a coach.. Could be easy to get some transfers or kids go to a big school k-8 and enroll at a small one for HS.

How about just being a 1A in a metro area? Sure, schools don’t actively recruit, but now CC has the Indy area to get potential players from, while the Adams county schools have to pluck kids from a cornfield.
