The situation with Memorial and Mater Dei is similar. Each has a parish feeder system where they get the vast majority of their students (>97%). I do not know if this is still the case but as a member of the catholic school board in the mid - late 1990s, there were far more students who left the catholic school system after 8th grade to attend a public high school than left the public grade schools to attend one of the catholic high schools, which is the exact reverse of what many tend to believe. Part of the reason, at least on the west side of Evansville, was the fact that Reitz has a very good academic reputation and the creation of the "Signature School" which caters to those seeking higher academics.

Imagine living in a place where you choose between 1 the 1A private, the 5/6A public, and everyone in between. You city folk must tire yourself out in researching. 😂😂

It coincided with the arrival of Mr. Dick Dullaghan. One of the finest men I have met in my lifetime. He treated the janitor the same as he did the Superintendent. Before he was hired at Ben Davis they had only had 10 winning seasons in 46 years.

I agree with much of this. Ben Davis had always been pretty good in basketball, but the football team largely struggled between 1937 and 1983. Bob Wilbur did a fine job at BD in the 70's, but the big jump came from the hiring of Dick Dullaghan. Coach D arrived on campus with a program that had a record of 155-265-12. When he retired, BD was 368-307-12. I attribute the biggest jump in hiring Coach D and Coach Kevin Vanderbush. Judge Dillon's deseg order bussed students from IPS into the townships, and that went into effect in 1981. Washington closed in 1995. For a real primer, you might pick up Steve Witty's book "I Remember When The Game Had No Class" because he covers it from the basketball side.

I will just say this, Ben Davis’s rise to state and national prominence seemed to coincide with Washington HS closing. But I’m getting old and my memory ain’t what it once was.

The game at McCutcheon that I attended this season had some light activity between the halves when the teams returned to the field and they announced over the PA system that, while there would be a strobing/flickering effect, the lights would not be acting at a level that would impact people who might have maladies that might be triggered by a certain level of flickering.

We were riding in there one afternoon on the bus and there was a dumpster fire behind the school in what appeared to be an industrial arts area. I have a picture on my phone somewhere, kinda sums up Jeff athletics.

We probably have less "jump-offs" down here, but in Newburgh, we lose some kids from the Catholic school (St. John Baptist) after 6th grade because they head to The Castle middle schools. The Evansville Catholic schools see less exodus. We get about 90% of the East side Catholic schools enrolling at Memorial. I suspect Mater Dei gets about the same, but I'm no longer on any of the boards where I would see the actual numbers. With the income qualification so high, it surprises me that more people don't take advantage of the vouchers. It has been a decent boost, but nothing like what it could be if people took full advantage of the program. We probably get more non-Catholics than MD, but I don't see actual numbers..

Little bit of a misleading stat...given strength of schedule plays very much into those numbers. What does stand out to me if BD's performances against Moeller, Carmel and Larry North. BD dropping 62 on a pretty darn good Larry North team really raised my eyebrows. No question BD has an excellent QB and excellent team. But they are very fortunate to be heading into the regional, as I still believe they got some help from Brownsburg. (another excellent team) If I had to put money on this game, I would put it on BD...I think most would. But, never count out the Irish...and it will come down to the team that makes the least mistakes.

Think of Warren Central and Ben Davis similar to Carroll and Homestead. Homestead and Carroll are not part of Fort Wayne Public Schools just like Warren Central, Pike, North Central, Lawrence North, Lawrence Central, Southport, Perry Meridian, Speedway, Franklin Central, and Ben Davis are not part of IPS. The Private/Parochial schools have been around (earliest 1918 Cathedral) even during the hayday when Arsenal Tech, Howe, Washington, etc. were doing very good. The decline of IPS was a direct result of busing and it has never recovered. From 1973 to 1998 IPS student enrollment plummeted by 64,000 students. It had zero to do with recruiting.

Not trying to compare South Side to the IPS schools. They're all bad. I was using South Side as an example of the same dynamic in The Fort that occurs in Indy. Both cities had large population shifts away from those two school districts. IPS seems to have lost more population to the mega township schools outside 465 than FWCS has lost to Snider/Homestead/Carroll. I agree with you that there is a bigger disparity between IPS and the Indy township schools than there is between South and the rest of the SAC. And for what it's worth, Lutheran has had about as many players from IPS feeder schools as Concordia has received from South Side/Geyer.

Ben Davis's State and National prominence was there long before Washington High School closed the first time in 1995. Their National Title came in 1991 Dick Dullaghan started coaching at BD in 1984 and that is when they really began to take off. Busing though really was the start of the death nail to IPS schools.

Someone from Indy help me out. Recruiting is probably the reason the PP's, Ben Davis, and Warren Central are so good and teams deep inside the donut are so bad. I'm just not sure how Indianapolis teams can be as bad as they are without their best talent being raided by their neighbors. I'm presuming suburban schools are self sustaining based on their enrollment and resources alone and have nothing to do with the outright failure in Indianapolis proper when it comes to football.

You cannot blitz and sell out to get to Metzger because they will get the ball out incredibly fast, then what, you have an secondary who won't be able to run and catch up with those WRs. Who will LaVille counter with to shut down a 6'7 WR? LaVille has had an outstanding year, their is another level of football in Lafayette area then our friends farther north. As seen by West Lafayette beating Hanover Central last week. LaVille NEEDED a monsoon imo, they didn't get it this week like they did week 10

As an advocate for School Choice, you also must take the understand, school choice, can lead to this sort of thing to occur, when talking school choice, you cannot cherry pick, well only for academics, that is not the reality of the situation, I think you understand that.

Cathedral by 100, and then the rest of the games don't matter because Cathedral is gonna win the rest of them after that. And then all the other private schools are gonna win their classes like they always do. Except for 5A cause there aren't any in the class. In fact since 2015 the only private to win 5A was Cathedral. The lowest number of private school wins in a class since 2015. Hmmm the only private in 5A runs through it for two years. Coincidence...I THINK NOT!!! All the private schools must just have more tackling fuel than the rest of these public schools have anymore.

It was a entertaining game to watch. The VL kids played incredibly hard and their defense was better than I anticipated. They should be proud of their season in the meat grinder SIAC.

UM prepared to air the entire conference’s dirty laundry if Petitti wants to go the suspension route and will file an immediate injunction that they are confident will be granted and allow Harbaugh to continue coaching. BOTH sides seem very confident as UM has even stated they are still moving forward with extending Jim.

Ben Davis did solid against the run when playing Brownsburg, gave up a couple of big runs but Brownsburg's RB was really good. Ben Davis gave up some long passes but locked down in the 4th quarter making plays. Cathedral ran the ball more against Lawrence North than they typically do. The Giants can create problems for the Irish Offense, the Irish will have to play a whale of a game Offensively to have a shot. The Irish defense has done well against the run all year, but the Giants have a quick back in Price and the QB runs very hard when needed so the Irish will have 2 runners to focus on. Secondary has been the Irish weak spot all year, they played pretty solid against LN, and a lot of that had to do with the pressure applied to the QB while trying to keep him from making big plays with his legs. The Irish would need to have a great game from their secondary again as the Giants can hit big plays in the passing game as their QB has a great arm and Zachary is very scary. Should be a great game. I think many Irish and Giants fans will be wondering which Giants or Irish team shows up Friday. They will be entertained none the less. Last week I expected Ben Davis to destroy Pike. Watched the Cathedral vs Lawrence North game expecting a Offensive shootout and it ended up being a defensive battle. Don't fully know what exactly we will see from Ben Davis and Cathedral, but having watched both play they will both play hard throughout. Should have booked it for Arlington. It would be nice and dark by about 6pm. Would be an interesting game to watch. 😂🤣

In 2021, Memorial won against East Central in an electrifying matchup in the 2H comeback by winning it 17-14. However, last year, East Central wasn’t phased and jumped out to a 28-0 lead at the half and ended up winning the game 35-21. And the Trojans went all the way to Lucas Oil to win the 4A State Championship for the third time in program history. This year? Memorial will host East Central again in Enlow, but the Trojans will be coming in as the defending state champion and looking to stay undefeated this season. Starting with East Central, the Trojans have been unphased the entire season by blowing out 11 of their 12 opponents. While winning another EIAC Big title only giving up 7 points in conference play. In Week 3 of the season, Moeller was the only team to have kept it close throughout the game, but lost by 10. However, East Central was pretty much in control of that game in the 2H. Martinsville in the semifinal gave East Central a scare, but the Trojans ended up winning that one by 36. The Trojans primarily run the ball in their games as about 73% of the yardage has come from the ground game. Thanks to their elusive RB (Miami-OH commit) who has averaged above 200 yards per game and close to 50 total touchdowns (National leader) this season. They also have a couple of players that have put up decent yardage too. While they like to run a lot, the Trojans are not afraid to pass behind their 3-year starter QB, who has put up over 1200 yards this year on 18 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. As his primary receiver has put up around 700 yards and 13 TDs and is committed to Western Michigan for football. Defensively, the Trojans are a beast on the field recording 6 shutouts, most recently in the sectional championship. On average, only allows 6.3 PPG and has only given more than 20 points against Martinsville and Moeller. The pass defense has been good for the Trojans only allowing 104.0 yards per game and has grabbed 14 interceptions. Their rush defense is the sweet spot they have, as they probably have one of the best rush defenses in the state, only allowing almost 54 yards per game and almost 2 yards per carry. They have only given 100+ yards in 2 games, but have multiple games holding opponents below 30 yards (5 games). The Trojans have also gotten 56.5 TFLS and 22 sacks this season. Memorial is coming off with their biggest win of the season, knocking off the undefeated and 4A #2 Reitz for the Sectional Championships. Which is their 4th title in 4A in a 5-year span up a class. It was also their 7th sectional championship in 8 years and 10th under HC Hurley. The Tigers have had an interesting season so far, starting off hot 6-0 and high as the #3 ranking and then losing 3 straight in the final third of the regular season. However, the Tigers have been without their starting QB since after Week 4 up until the semifinals, where he is now punting. But has been able to win 3-straight in the postseason. Offensively, the Tigers did start off, but it has been a mix of inconsistencies up until the postseason. The Tigers have been using their leading receiver as QB and have switched around a few spots. But so far in the postseason, the rushing game has been pretty well for the Tigers averaging over 150 yards so far. But overall has averaged around 114 YPG and 148.9 in passing. Defensively, the Tigers have been one of the top teams in the SIAC and 4A giving up 12.25 PPG and at one point it was around 7 PPG. Memorial’s passing defense has been one of their strongest areas all season only allowing around 95 yards per game and has been ballhawks around the ball. And has only given up 1 game over 170 yards and multiple sub-100 yards games throughout the season. On the other note, Memorial’s run defense has seen a lot of improvement compared to last season being one of the top run defenses in the SIAC, and held the top spot for a few weeks. It has taken a little dip facing some of the top rushing teams in the SIAC, but their last 2 opponents have been held to 125 rushing yards (Jasper) and 116 rushing yards (Reitz). Those teams were near the top in the SIAC all season. However, they will face a very tall task against one of the best-rushing teams in the state, East Central. The Tigers also have gathered up around 70 TFLs and 10 sacks, the Tigers also have one of the best LBs in 4A/State gathering up 163 tackles and 17 TFLs. And a very quick DE getting 18 TFL and 90 tackles first year on the DL.

That has been my point all along, the administration is the true problem at North Side. If administration is on board with poor coaching, lack of discipline, and treating others with total disrespect, nothing will change at North Side.

This sectional/regional alignment does not make sense to me. Why have, if it works out this way, Heritage Hills meet Gibson Southern in Semi-State? They could flip Sectional 30 and 31 and it would make more sense, in my opinion at least.
