Wherever Lewis lands next could also be a major factor for O’Neil who ranks as 247Sports’ No. 34 quarterback. “The landscape of college programs and coaches will be dramatically different by midweek,” O’Neil’s father Mike told 247Sports over the weekend. Cincinnati, Houston, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Purdue, Syracuse, Toledo, Tulane and Wake Forest were among the schools that also extended O’Neil a scholarship the first time he went through is process. The 6-foot, 185-pound O’Neil has been one of the Midwest’s top signal-callers the last three seasons. In his time as a starter at Cathedral he’s won a state championship and threw for 7,786 yards and 98 touchdowns, completing over 62 percent of his attempts. O’Neil has also rushed for 1,326 yards and 27 more scores. “He’s an incredible competitor,” Cathedral head coach Bill Peebles said. “Incredibly intelligent. Obviously has great arm. Great accuracy with it. A complete deal.” O’Neil competed in the Elite 11 Finals this summer.

While I appreciate the kind words and recognition of a very special athlete, everybody in Spencer County remembers in the late 90's when Jett's dad's team got upset in the sectionals. That isn't lost on any of us....the future expectations are high, but children are children and if anything children are inconsistent and every teenage boy has the inherent ability to be a moron. I know because I was one and I am a father to one on this team. 2024 season has started, at this point we are looking to be competitive for a conference championship and competitive for a sectional.

And those were both schools playing up already due to SF. Starting next year, the Indy Diocese is going to consider Mooresville a Parochial school as well. That's the only way beating Roncalli and Brebeuf in back to back weeks can be explained.

I always forget about Bishop Webo and St. Gibson of Southern. Why say "they" when what you really mean is Chatard and Lutheran? And there have been more public 2A champs (Rensy, Southridge, Monrovia, WeBo x 3) than privates in the SF era (Ritter x2, Andrean, Mater Dei, and now Luers)

We control the enrollment. All your theories are true. The board of the school actually meets before every school year and decides which athletes are getting free tuition, and final cuts are made to bring the total enrollment down to desired levels specifically for football classification. It’s usually the theatre nerds that don’t make the final cut. Their loss.

I didn't take your comments negatively...just seeking to understand and having some good discussion. I agree with you...a tough schedule takes it toll. That's why I am not much into transitive property stuff. Thus my comment about playing a similar opponent at the beginning of the season vs. a season elimination game are not one in the same. It's obvious they fare better at the 1A-3A level because they can control their enrollment. The quality of student/athlete is just different. The solution is to move them all up a class. No P/P should ever be competing at a 1A level and it's been proven through SF that they can compete at higher levels. The problem is, the powers that be don't care because the big schools don't care. They have the enrollment numbers and funds to overcome.

This reminds me of Pioneer in the early 90s, right before Mike Johnson bought in to using the Delaware Wing-T and implementing it in the youth program. However, Pioneer had a very young program and had never really achieved anything as a program. There's an entire story somewhere chronicling Coach Johnson's journey to using the Wing-T, in which he attempted to attend a Wing-T clinic, in another state, just to realize that he had gone on the wrong date. He and his assistant, I want to say Clay Scott, then located the guy who ran the clinic and the guy, feeling sorry for them, let them pick his brain for a few hours, as the story goes. I absolutely love this story because it shows what can be accomplished when dedication and passion are applied to situations of adversity. Also, remember that this was in the early-90s, so there wasn't any internet or probably even cell phones involved.

Private Schools make up 7% of all football schools. These numbers would probably be a little higher if the officials in the North Posey/Mater Dei sectional semi-final could count to 12 on the final play.

Really, only up until recently, LCC's been a feast-or-famine kind of team when it comes to post season ... although folks have always thought of them as dominant since inception. Looking at Harrell's, from 1976, in the run-up to the 4-peats which kind of kicked off the "modern history" of LCC mythos, LCC's post-season was: 1976 - State champ 1989 - Sectional champ 1999 - State champ 2005 - Sectional champ I ran some back-of-the-napkin calculations and, prior to the 1983 season, LCC was sporting just under a 54% win-rate. The win-rate since the first youth program kids hit their senior year has been a tad over 71%. Probably of greater interest to the LCC faithful, is that LCC's post-season has been less feast-or-famine. Since the end of the four-peats, 2009-2012, LCC's post season has been: 2014 - 2A Regional champ 2015 - 1A State champ 2016 - 1A Sectional champ 2019 - 1A State champ 2020 - 1A Regional champ 2021 - 2A Sectional champ 2022 - 2A Sectional champ 2023 - 2A Regional champ

Some publics do have more problems. Especially the ones in urban areas. Public suburban’s tend to have all of the advantages (even over privates). Have you seen the weight room at Delta? How about the facilities at Hamilton Heights? I only reference those two because Chatard played there this year. Their facilities are beautiful. I don't even want to talk about the tax bases for Carmel/Fishers. For those few publics that do have these problems, and I would bet money that it is only a few, they have other concerns. For the rest of the publics, the majority, this argument does not apply. Additionally, I would be interested in knowing what percentage of a school is dedicated to this special “clientele” that you refer to. Maybe 5%? Will you let the privates carve out their special “clientele”? I’m referring to the kids who fill their extra-curriculars with robotics, chess club, multiple foreign languages and the other things they need to get into ivy league schools? I bet the offset wouldn’t benefit the publics in that case.

Gotcha... yes... Lcc bein so small struggled getting numbers... and like all of 1A just a few injuries killed alotta their teams... Lil GridIron def saved FB from bein relegated to grade school recess .... . being its Indiana.. School sponsored Basketball teams were formed in 5th grade back then ... the younger ones were playing it in their cribs... 😆

Lafayette Central Catholic started playing football in 1958. Their first game in school history was Monday September 15, 1958. They were playing the Indy Scecina B team at Scecina. John Jardine was the coach at LCC. Offensive starters for LCC were Paul Sanders, Walt Anthrop, Reno Rizzo, Ed Hickner, Joe Metzinger, Ron Edmundson, Dave Klinker, Jack Hubertz, Jim Lamb, Tom Moser, and Dick Isbell. Danny Metzinger, Danny McGuire, Ken Ross and Jim Courter were starters on defense. LCC won the game 12-11. LCC 6-0-6-0 Scecina 0-2-7-2 Nobody should be surprised that an Anthrop scored the first td for LCC. Tom Moser threw a long pass to Walt Anthrop for the very first td in school history.

As always....the issue with p/p vs public isn't the kids they count. Its the kids the p/p's will never have to count. The kids the publics will always have to count. Would a kid who constantly fails all his classes, is habitually absent, and often suspended for disciplinary issues; be allowed to remain at a p/p school? The answer is he probably would have never been an applicant to begin with, but also assuredly NO...he would not be able to remain. Public schools have to count those kids...and for some publics that is a sizeable fraction of their student body.

Warren's sectional is as bad as it gets. I maintain you could combine all three rosters from the remaining schools and build an all-star team and Warren would still advance.

How much in subsidies and grants does a ~3A public school get solely for these programs? I’d estimate it’s more than Lutheran’s entire annual operating budget.

Based upon the snapshot; It probably was. But remember, here in good ole Indiana. We are still using 5 guys to cover a field of play with teenagers (not like we used to be) running RPO and fast all all get out. Sometimes things are missed, sadly. I've suggested that following the Sectional Finals we use 7 man crews.... immediately rebuffed by the powers that me. With a FJ and a SJ right there... I'd guess that that ability to more clearly adjudicate things like this would be handled better. Not perfect, but better.

I'm fine with an all p/p division, as long as they allow public schools the ability to voluntarily join that division if they so choose. Some public schools will still be interested in being the best-of-the-best, not just best-of-the-rest.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. If there is extra enrollment being thrown around, send some Chatard's way. Building holds 850, and the closer they are to that number, the better the school can fulfill its mission.

How many of the state champions played their toughest postseason games 5-6 weeks ago? Fixing the postseason format might make for a better and more competitive Thanksgiving weekend.

Can someone please tell CalPreps that Ben Davis is the full name of the school? I've tried. MaxPreps finally got it right a few years ago. Ben Davis is named after a place which was named after a person. It's like Jim Thorpe, PA, for example. You wouldn't put Central (Warren) or Grove (Center) on there. OK, back to my Thanksgiving nap.
