  3. Is the reasoning for the dress limit that the IHSAA wants to limit player medals/rings to 75 on a side? Or are they worried about teams tossing in a bunch of kids that are just going to be there to grab a medal/ring, but that aren't really varsity? Or is there something legit about 75 players being the upper cap of folks that can fit without incurring a beyond-bound infraction or a realistic safety issue? It would seem like the first two are pretty easily addressed. If the IHSAA only wants to pay for a max of 75 rings/medals they can simply tell a team, "Anything more than 75 is on your dime." The second one is also fairly easy by roster checks from start to end of season. The last one seems like the only really legit reason which might be tied to safety. To some extent, I'm not thinking it's the cost issue of rings/medals since this really would only seem to impact 6A and potentially some 5A schools too ... maybe a couple of 4As ... so that cost would be fairly negligible in the scheme of things. This is especially true given that cheerleaders and other non-players are part of the after-game medal parade in LOS.

  4. As a casual fan I think it's great. There's only so many good football teams in Indiana and Center Grove either already has a contract with them or will play them in the tournament when it matters. They're the 3x defending state champions and have only lost to one Indiana opponent in the last 3 seasons. Hell they've only played a handful of competitive games against in-state competition during that stretch. With the exception of maybe Cathedral, they're on an other worldly level than anyone else in the state. And frankly I don't think it's close.

  6. Just scoured through On3 recruiting rankings and for the life of me cannot figure out why this game is being played. IMG currently has 10 seniors who are 4 and 5* recruits and another 8 juniors who are either 4 or 5* in their respective classes. I stopped looking at recruits ranked past 300 nationally but would imagine there's at least another 10-15 kids in both the 2024 and 2025 classes who hold committable offers to more than at least 1 P5 school. Ben Davis has one kid, Mark Zackery a JR, who is rated in the top 1000 nationally (171 in the class of 2025) in either class who I'm guessing would be a special teams player at IMG at this point in his career. Is this game being televised?

  11. I'm not a subscriber but was able to access the article. I have an obvious interest in East since they are South's opening opponent. The Villarreal kid being one the two QBs that is competing for the starting job is 5-9, 207-pounds. I've never seen him, but I wonder about his quickness at that size. South returns 9 of 11 defensive starters from last season's 9-2 team to include a strong linebacking cadre and they may give a QB without much speed, a lot of trouble. However, everything is on paper right now, and you don't win games on paper.

  13. 1st round of picks! Reitz at Harrison Harrison will likely be an improved team this coming season especially with Brown being QB after a late breakout last year. With an important weapons in TE 6’7 Thomas and WR Terry, however they did get hit from graduation. Reitz, on the other hand, returns nearly everyone from last year, with a question in RB/DBs. But, the Panthers want to make a statement right off the back, after facing an early loss in the playoffs last year. I’ll take the Panthers in a running clock. Central at Mater Dei It’s been a rough 2 seasons for the Bears as they have struggled. Central returns with a couple of playmakers like Stewart brothers, but took a massive hit in graduation and lots questions in other places. But with a new coach and QB, it will be interesting to see how they do tomorrow night. After a devastating loss to Andrean in the 2021 State Championship, MD returned back to Lucas Oil to win it last year. There will be a strong target on Mater Dei’s back this season. Replacing nearly half the defense and nearly all the offense, I think tomorrow could be a close one. However, I’m going to take Mater Dei by 2 scores. Bosse at Vincennes I’m pretty excited to see what Coach Mullen can do with this year’s Bosse team. As they return, electric players like QB Wagner/ WR Hope/ WR Tomlinson and others. And according to my research, a good majority of their starters from last season. Bosse has had some flashes in games, but it will be bit before they mold up. Vincennes is definitely going to be a top team watch this season, as they return SIAC POTY QB Xander Hunt, and solid defensive, better experienced squad. Vincennes did get hit on the offensive side, but with an electric player like Hunt who nearly threw 1500 yards and 900 rushing yards last season, VL will be interesting. I’ll take Alices by 4 scores in this game. North at Castle Lots of eyes on North this season as they return a majority of their starters on offense and defense. As they are slowly finding their rhythm after finally breaking the 5-5 threshold to get their first winning season in 15 years. North returns a pretty solid OL (6’3 280 average IB), questions in receiving/rushing, but solid options in those categories. North also returns the top rushing defense from last year almost everyone returns on the DL and a good amount in their backfield. After coming off from their 2nd appearance in the 5A SS in 3 years, Castle is aiming to finally reach the 5A Title Game after unfortunate losses. The Knights did take a massive graduation hit, as they replace nearly all their OL, replacing All-State LB Purdy and other spots around the team. However, they do return enough to build around QB Gordon and their defense should be decent. Coin flip, but I think the Huskies squeak by a score in Paradise. Jasper at Memorial Jasper returns back to Enlow after an early exit to Memorial in the same place last season. Jasper is looking to finally win Sectional 24 after a 10 year drought and aiming for a SIAC title. Jasper did lose solid players last season like QB Young. But Jasper always reloads and will run straight down your throats, as they will be loaded in their offensive system this year under a solid size OL. And Jasper Defense is always solid year around too. Question is can they be healthy this season, as they were plagued by injuries last season, which costed them a couple of games. On the other side of the playing field, Memorial returns valuable players like QB Fisher/ WR Ellspermann/ RB Rode/ LB Broshears. But was decimated in the trenches as the Tigers were forced to replace their entire DL and a couple of starters on the OL. As there are questions regarding those areas. It’s going to be tough defending against run heavy Jasper offense. But, let’s see what Coach Hurley has up his sleeve this season for the defending sectional champions. The last 3 years in the regular season I picked Memorial and they have lost. Let’s play some reverse psychology, I’ll take Jasper +7.

  14. The IHSAA doesn't pay for rings. They provide 75 medals for winning and losing teams at state. Any school can order more medals at a minimal cost. The 75 limit undoubtedly keeps the sidelines less cluttered and the post-game presentations more efficient. It also probably also has to do with the (very) modest reimbursements they provide during the latter stages of the tournament. The IHSAA is pretty tight on host site costs, etc. for Regional & Semi-State, where they get the vast majority of the gate receipts. We have typically had to raise $10-12,000 to cover costs when we went to state, not counting rings for the 2 years we won. We are 3.5 hours away and don't own busses, so we have to rent them and pay for hotels, food, etc.

  19. I'm not sure I have ever understood this argument. I've played and coached on both surfaces. Not one time did one team play on turf while the other had to play on grass. If it makes one team faster, it proportionally makes the other team faster.

  20. Boyle has been to the state championship game 5 out the last 6 years. 2017 won, 2018 semifinals lose, 2019 lost in state game by 1 point, 2020 won , 2021 won, 2022 won. And has 5 players rated in the top 20 in state this year. Should be a good game

  23. I looked up school size and Goshen is the 2nd largest school in the conference and almost 6A just behind Warsaw. They were the first school in the conference with field turf and have a really nice stadium. I also hear they have a fantastic weight room although I have never seen it. Also hired Wogomon. I would think all that would show some kind of administrative support.

  25. ‘Gender Hybrid’ Children? https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/gender-hybrid-children/ What are the supposed hybrids? Gender Prius: Half girl and half boy Gender Minotaur: One gender on top and a different one on the bottom Gender by Season: One gender during the school year and another over the summer Gender by Location: At home, one gender, elsewhere another Contrary to the story, readers should resist the temptation to dismiss these views as fringe. “Fringe” today in America is holding to the view that children are of the sex in which they have been born and that the proper approach to treating gender confusion is to conduct an in-depth and at-length mental-health exploration of the child’s emotional state (as some European countries now insist). Indeed, expressing such opinions can be dangerous and could cause a parent to lose custody of their gender-dysphoric child or medical professionals to be branded “transphobic” and have their careers threatened. But on the gender-ideological left, there is no longer such a thing as “fringe.” After all, ten years ago, who would have thought that we would allow doctors to cut off the breasts of 14-year-old girls who feel they are boys — and that showing images of teenagers with two scars on their chests would become a celebrated phenomenon? Who would have thought that doctors would perform facial-reconstruction surgeries on teenagers to masculinize or feminize their appearances? Who would have thought that one of the highest officials at HHS would praise a “gender inclusive biology curriculum” for children that eliminates the word “mother” and replaces it with “gestational parent” or “egg carrier”? No, Ehrensaft — the official at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital mentioned in the Fox News story — is not fringe. She is very credentialed, frequently published in medical journals, and holds a position of great power and influence. She is also a professor at UCSF School of Medicine, specializing in pediatric “gender-affirmative care for transgender and gender-expansive patients.” I suspect she received these high-prestige positions because of her no-longer-fringe opinions, not in spite of them. “Gender Minotaur.” “Gender Prius.” Our poor children. Our poor children indeed. And just when I thought the gender-obsessed left couldn't get any nuttier.

  26. Goshen is not the same city it was 20 years ago. Not even close. NW, NR, FF all have a lot of former "Goshen" families walking their halls. I don't know how many of them are football families but a few of them are. There is a subdivision in FF that is made up of a significant amount of former "Goshen" families. Need a large amount of admin emphasis to overcome this.....from what I understand it just isn't there.

  30. It will take a lights out effort and an off night by Reitz for them not to go 9-0. That still may not be enough this year in the regular season. Playoffs bring a different element. A hiccup there and it’s season over.

  33. Ahhh...Goshen vs. the mighty falcons of Fairfield, I forgot to include said game. First...I hope that Goshen turns things turned around and judging by last year, they seem to be going in the right direction (other than numbers). Last year they were in the a lot of their games in the first half and then puttered out in the second. Now...don't get angry...I understand the proximity of the two schools to one another, and possibly some bragging rights between friends / families, but this game should be removed from Goshen's schedule. It does Goshen no good to schedule a school the size of Fairfield...if they win...look at me...we beat a small farm school...if you loose...you lost to a small farm school? Anyway...rant over...Goshen 35 Fairfield 14

  34. Alexandria has always played HH well, even though not very often. I always enjoyed watching those matchups. HH lost almost all of both lines due to graduation, so it could be a long year for them. Although they should be good at linebacker. And depending on what offense they run, that could be decent as well if they keep it balanced. Good luck to Ellick this year!

  35. Looking to do an HHC pick ‘em again this year. @LC_Bears_04 was our champ last year. @boilerfan87, @Owls2005, and @mamasa, you all competed in the weekly competition last year also. @Olympian06, @Uncle Bubba, @swcgillespie, and @Fkfootball, you all submitted picks at times last season. Let me know if any of you are in for this season. Anyone else can join as well. Just a reminder that I’ll keep tabs of any picks you have but, in order to compete in the competition, you’ll need to submit picks every week. Just a heads-up, I plan on making my picks every Friday morning or afternoon. I might even go as early as Thursdays sometimes. Just makes sure picks are in before 7 PM each Friday.

  37. I had a freebie at Dominoes. FWIW, if you’re in town I HIGHLY recommend Brooklyn Pizza and Brewery. Beer is brewed in-house. Shawn Malone is the owner, great community support, free concerts, this is the kind of local business you want to support. Tell them BFP sent, I’m sure I’ll equate a huge discount lol. Great place for a pregame meal and a couple of beers before the game.

  38. Good article about New Albany football. Coach Cooley believes a lot of teams improved and that there are five teams who could win the HHC title. https://www.newsandtribune.com/sports/high-school-football-preview-bulldogs-looking-for-bounce-back/article_f1c23b0a-372a-11ee-986d-c3aac896b39c.html?utm_campaign=blox&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social Also, new helmets for New Albany this year.

  39. Wow, where to start. Roughly twenty years ago I was asked by Rivals to get with some other posters on their forum to compile a Top 100 for that site after Dallas Jackson was removed from their staff. That started my interest in compiling the poll for discussion and debate among others with similar interests in the national aspect of the game. Dallas Jackson soon established his own site and requested that I post exclusively on his site, which I did. In the following years, I have added other sites, including this one, to my "customer" base. My methodology is simple. I read, watch, and analyze this game on a daily basis from May to January. I am not smart enough to develop nor do I believe in algorithms. I am constantly viewing MaxPreps, rivals and other forums to gather all the information I can on teams throughout the country. I attend as many games as possible throughout the season and watch games both on TV and streaming services. For instance, next weekend I am going to Massillon, Ohio to watch four of the Cleveland area's best teams play four state champions, including Center Grove from Indiana. This does not only give me a chance to gauge those teams, but also a gauge on each state's strength. The following weekend, I will not only attend a game (most likely Warren Central at Carroll) but also watch the national games being broadcast on ESPN as part of their kickoff weekend. With all that of background, plus empirical data from prior seasons, I compile team rankings for every state, yes that includes states like Wyoming, Rhode Island, and other non-power states. From there I compile a Top 100 by looking at game results, player evaluations and the state's strength to compile the list. Hope this helps.
