Come on now, we can’t be bringing math into football when discussing Starke County. I’m kidding, I’m kidding.2 points

One of the things the Indiana Football Officials Association does to support its members in their never-ending effort to get better is produce and distribute a weekly training video. It has 10 or so video clips of plays from the preceding week’s games that illustrate mechanics issues, rules interpretations, and judgment calls. This video is distributed to the 700 or so members of the IFOA — most of the people you see wearing stripes on Friday nights. These weekly videos are an important part of our in-season training. The IFOA needs your help. On a given Friday night there are 150+ games. They produce a wealth of useful information for officials. The problem is finding those plays in that mountain of video. This is where you come in. If you had an unusual play in a game you saw, let us know about it by describing it on this thread. Let us know the game, the approximate point in the game when the play occurs, and a brief description. We’re interested in almost anything: onside kicks, pass interference, punt returns, goal line plays, big hits … the list goes on an on. Lots of people complain about officiating. Here’s your opportunity to do something about it. These videos help us to be better, more consistent. If you’re reluctant to mention a play openly, feel free to message me.1 point

I assumed, but they are a private school. They tend to not have the same "drop-off" the season after as a lot of publics.1 point

This week we have 2 duds and 2 nice games. It may be that way the rest of the season. Every week there will be 2 key games. Should be fun from here on out. This weeks picks - - - Alexandria vs Blackford - - Preseason continues for Alexandria. They should be well rested by the time they play Eastbrook. Frankton vs Elwood - - Let's see if Frankton can keep the momentum after an upset against Lapel. Oakhill vs Eastbrook - - I'm going with Eastbrook. Should be a good game. I think Eastbrook is still the best in the CIC. Madison-Grant vs Mississinewa - - - This is a toss up for me, but I'll go with Mississinewa. Hope all stay safe!!1 point

Yes football magnet schools but Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman are parochial schools (same as Chatard/Roncalli/Ritter/Scecina) and Bosco is a prep school with Catholic affiliation, similar to a Chatard or Brebeuf. But yes, those schools absolutely recruit from all over and all have several high D1 caliber players as well.1 point

Comparing Mt Vernon to Warren, IMO, isn't necessarily a fair comparison. Different schools in so many ways other than the obvious a 4A school and a 6A school. What is more comparable is why the success with Ben Davis and what looks to be continued underachieving of expectations. Why the success at BD and not at WC? K shouldn't have struggled nearly as bad his second year with that talented group of seniors as he did. I say the same about the team this year.1 point

I had a HS student the other night complement me at a MIDDLE SCHOOL game on my officiating. (No comment on what I was doing there) But the larger point is. He said he'd like to become an official. Then asked. "What do I do take a couple of classes?".... I tried as best as possible to speak with him, (since I was the LJ this evening) about the art of officiating. But it seems that no one understands that just like PLAYING the game, we ALL must practice/practice/practice to become better; This is NOT a hobby! It is much more than that. UGH! 🤔1 point

Temp & humidity effect on players is bigger deal than up-tempo O, IMHO. MD does not substitute a lot so I don't think the up-tempo Offense will anymore/less of an issue. Temps will be much better for football per Jeff Lyons, so hopefully MD can hang a little closer, a little longer than many anticipate...1 point

Columbus East at Seymour Jeffersonville at Bedford NL Jennings County at New Albany Silver Creek at Floyd Central1 point

Ok. My picks. Im taking Seymour. Very good football team. East doesn’t seem to have much firepower right now. Should be a big game for Perry. I’m taking BNL. Jeffersonville isn’t good. It’s amazing that a school with around 2000 students and a lot of them being big and athletic, and they can’t field a decent football team. The HHC would be more interesting if they could. Im taking New Albany. Jennings County looks better. But the teams they’ve played so far are extremely bad. New Albany has played a really good Franklin team and the 3A State Champion in Kentucky with multiple D-1 recruits. New Albany will squeak one out tomorrow. Im taking Floyd Central by a large margin. This team seems to be turning the corner. They’ve got it all on offense. Experienced QB, a RB that can beat you with power or speed, a big offensive line, and tall WRs with speed. This will be a good tune up for the big showdown at home with Seymour next week.1 point

It would be if they had to play them every season. If Penn does eventually go Independent, you can keep the local schools happy by playing them on a rotating schedule. Rotate the Catholic Schools and rotate the three remaining South Bend schools. If you are going to challenge yourself with a harder schedule you will need some cushion on the schedule to get players healthy.1 point

Wonder who ended up making 53 man rosters. Center Grove’s Russ Yeast made the Rams for the 2nd straight year. He earned a start end of last season at the safety spot.1 point

Correct. The IHSAA piloted this class last year with a few HSs around the state. They are very involved with the efforts to recruit new officials as well. We'll see how good engagement and follow up is from them and the local officials as well.1 point

MD was gassed by the end of Q1. Most skill players go both ways and some linemen do as well. By end of 1st quarter, there was a consistent flow of MD players getting heat related treatments on the sidelines whenever possible.1 point

This rule blows our players minds every year when I explain it to them! Not had a chance to use it yet, but would be a fun situation!1 point

They are close. I am sure that some people will question why Our Lady of Good Counsel stayed ranked after losing to St. Edwards by nearly the same margin as Center Grove did. I watched both games and can tell you that Our Lady of Good Counsel was much more competitive against @Bobref Eagles then Center Grove was. Alot of the difference being the running game of Our Lady of Good Counsel. Center Grove's two scoring plays were a direct result of a fumble recovery at the Eagles 19, which led to a field goal, and a touchdown with twenty seconds left in the game against the Eagle defense second team. Tell Coach Moore that their win over what normally is a very good Oakland team was impressive but not sure how good Oakland will be this year. Even tomorrow night's game against Louisville Trinity has some question marks with it as Trinity was beat by Frederick Douglass last weekend, a team I saw Archbishop Hoban destroy in Canton.1 point

@MuleDriver Hey Driver, maybe you have already seen it, but WVNI is also traveling to Terre Haute and they will be covering the South/THN game. I don't know if they were already going to cover that game or they saw with the two other stations going to the North/THS game, it made sense not to cover that game that would have been a redundant triple coverage. Franklin county wildcats with turf!!! That looks awesome!! No more long grass, and muddy fields!! If fc had that turf in early 90's, Alex Smith might of ran 4.2 40 on that field, instead of 4.4 in that long grass!! Lol1 point

Got brought in another thread earlier today. Triton vs LaVille, :06 seconds left of the first half, LaVille fair catches at the -48 and initiates the free kick rule inside 10 seconds. A really great teaching moment for all the refs, the coaches, and the players.1 point

Working on putting a similar system in place here. I asked the local youth league leaders if I could be in charge of dealing with out of line parents and they said NO, we’ll handle that. OK, but rest assured if you don’t I will, you’re asking me to train HS kids, I’m not letting some idiot run them off.1 point

Youth leagues is where most new officials get their start. It's also where the most abuse happens from parents and coaches. It's also why we lose a lot of new officials. Cleaning that up will go a LONG way to addressing our shortage. The problem is the people doing the abusing don't see what they do as abusing. They feel they are in their right to yell at officials if they feel they are getting something wrong. Cheer for your kid and their team and buy them ice cream after. Leave the officials alone.1 point

You want outside the box? I’ll give you some outside the box. Recruit female football officials. More young women than ever are participating in athletics. And the opportunities for rapid advancement are there. We have had a woman officiate in the Super Bowl, and in major bowl games. Go to people who are already softball or basketball officials and recruit them for football. That, in addition to recruiting at the grass roots, e.g., just-graduated senior athletes.1 point

Two things: 1: I have been charged with traing a group of high schoolers to officiate youth Football games. Rule 2 is on the agenda for Wednesday night. Rule 2 for those who don’t know is titles “Definitions”. One of the items in Rule 2 worth noting is there is a definition for a “forward” pass and a “backward” pass but there is no definition for a “lateral”. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. 2. If the line to gain after the penalty enforcement is gained it will be 1st down. If the line to gain was not reached after enforcement it will be loss of down. So if the play happened on 3rd down it will now be 4th down. A new series can not start on any down other than 1st.1 point

You can’t push the runner. Can’t be simpler. Admittedly, when you have a big scrum, it can be difficult to discern who is pushing who. That’s why the guys in stripes get paid the big bucks. 😉1 point
