  1. Earlier in the week, @Bobref started a thread titled "Sectional Draw 2023" and the thread kind of went a couple directions away from the intended purpose. One of those directions pertained to the notion that 6A and 1A should be the classifications with 32 teams rather than 6A and 5A. This topic interested me, and I decided to take a deep dive researching it. It took me about ten hours total over the course of several days to compile. I'm not saying this to get a pat on the back, but to help you understand I didn't just breeze through it without any deep thought or research. Nevertheless, for this particular scenario, I compiled lists for 1A through 5A using the most recent enrollment numbers the IHSAA released (which was two years ago). I excluded 6A since it obviously wouldn't be affected by the change. In compiling the classification lists, the goal was to base it off this specific year's tournament in regard to the Fort Wayne Dwenger situation and the teams playing up due to the success factor. The 1A through 5A breakdown for this year's tournament is the following: 5A - 31 teams 4A - 64 teams 3A - 64 teams 2A - 62 teams 1A - 58 teams Total - 279 teams I wanted to keep these numbers as similar as possible. This meant that 5A would have 63 teams rather than 64 as a result of the IHSAA moving FW Dwenger down in the middle of the classification period. Therefore, these were the classification numbers I came up with: 5A - 63 teams 4A - 64 teams 3A - 64 teams 2A - 56 teams 1A - 32 teams Total - 279 teams After compiling lists for the classifications, I wanted to look at the ranges for each classification from the largest school to the smallest school. See below. 5A (63 teams) Largest School: Harrison (WL) - 2,079 students Smallest School: New Haven - 1,064 students 4A (64 teams) Largest School: Kankakee Valley - 1,062 students Smallest School (aside from the success factor team): Bellmont - 641 students Success Factor Team: Evansville Memorial - 556 students 3A (64 teams) Largest School: John Glenn - 638 students Smallest Schools: North Putnam and Tell City - 444 students 2A (56 teams) Largest School: Indianapolis Scecina - 439 students Smallest School: Covington - 294 students Success Factor Team: Lafayette Central Catholic - 296 students 1A (32 teams) Largest School: Fremont - 291 students Smallest School: Attica - 170 students Here are the ranges from the scenario above compared to the current numbers (excluding success factor teams): 5A: 1,064 - 2,079 (currently 1,513 - 2,079) 4A: 641 - 1,062 (currently 795 - 1,510) 3A: 444 - 638 (currently 511 - 790) 2A: 294 - 439 (currently 379 - 510) 1A: 170 - 291 (currently 170 - 378) Instead of just compiling a list of classifications given the scenario, I wanted to get the full scope of what this could look like as it pertains to sectional assignments. As a result, I put together classification maps and spent a ton of time trying to come up with sectional assignments that limit travel time as best as possible while also ensuring schools from the same school district aren't split up. I cannot stress enough how hard I tried to keep travel times down. I flirted with many different scenarios by looking at the travel times on Google Maps but some long trips just couldn't be helped. It's important to note I'm only including these sectional assignments to give you an idea of how 1A through 5A could look given the hypothetical 32 team 1A scenario. I'm not necessarily saying this is how they should look. See the link below to view the classification/sectional assignment maps. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1SqvN_8IxXWiJQxvs4E0RSxadUGh_f9k&usp=sharing Here are the sectional assignments I came up with. 5A (63) Sectional 9 (8): East Chicago Central, Gary West, Hammond Central, Hammond Morton, Harrison (WL), Lowell, McCutcheon, Munster Sectional 10 (8): Chesterton, Hobart, LaPorte, Merrillville, Michigan City, Mishawaka, South Bend Adams, Valparaiso Sectional 11 (8): Columbia City, Concord, Goshen, Huntington North, Kokomo, Logansport, Northridge, Plymouth Sectional 12 (7): DeKalb, Fort Wayne North, Fort Wayne Snider, Fort Wayne South, Fort Wayne Wayne, Muncie Central, New Haven Sectional 13 (8): Anderson, Greenfield-Central, Indianapolis Attucks, Indianapolis Roncalli, Mt. 2. Chatard's win over Cincinnati Elder Friday. And not just any win, but a statement, blowout win 34-7. Elder at 5-3 has losses to Ohio D1 #1 St. Edward (1 point) and D1 #2 Pickerington North (4 points) before getting roughed up by Moeller last week. Still have wins over both St. Xavier's and a team solid team from Philly. No clue what kind of shape Elder was in last week but I also think Chatard was without their starting QB. Impressive win by Chatard to end the regular season as they look to run the table for an undefeated season and state championship.

  9. I finally got to attend my first Notre Dame USC game a few years ago. While I love going to games at ND, this one was a different level…and awesome. One of the cool parts was Mike Collins reading the weather forecast for the game. It was rainy and cold then too, and he finishes with, “Trojan fans you are NOT in Southern California now”. Crowd went nuts.

  23. Disregard the record. They lost a lot of seniors and had an adjustment period. They lost to some tough 4A-5A schools in a competitive conference. They're a top 10 team in 2A, maybe even top 5. And they're always playing their best football come playoff time. This may be the year North Posey finally gets them but would not be shocked if MD makes another run.

  24. I think you are right on the money. The winner of Rochester/LCC has a great shot to make it to semi state and will probably take on Luers. Luers is getting better and played very well against Homestead. I think the Rochester/LCC game will be a low scoring game, maybe 14-13 type of game. Luers will probably make it to state and take on Triton Central or Mater Dei.

  25. Hopefully! Yikes. That was awful. Like they didn’t prepare at all for the blitz packages the Vikings would bring. Flores is notorious for pressuring young QB’s. I heard they blitzed on 72% of plays. And Fields regressed to holding onto the ball forever and missing open WR’s. Probably rolling with Pagent next week. At least he gets the ball out quickly. That INT at the end though, man, that was brutal. 1st down in a potential game winning drive and he throws a wounded duck jump ball.

  26. Kind of wonder how these pac 10 teams will do in the big ten dealing with the weather. USC looked cold Saturday night and that was no where near how cold it can get. How will they do playing in the Midwest in October and November? Can Oregon and Washington and USC do what they do in the elements?

  28. Make Carroll and NC play for capital letters. The winner gets the big letters and the loser has to use lower case. I was staring at so many spread sheets, print offs and calpreps pages that I am surprised that I didn’t make more errors by the time I was done posting.

  29. What a wild night !! I have no love loss for West Coast teams either, and now that they are in B10 blah, so I was nice to tune in late Saturday and saw the Domers doing work. Makes me happy for my friends like @WolvesOnTheProwl

  30. Rumor was that Elder’s starting QB was in a boot for most of the week. Chatard’s backup QB (who has been starting since the 4th play vs Guerin) has played well but was greatly assisted by the starting OL being back together for the first time since week 1. They manhandled Elders front 7. They were the real story of that game.

  35. Moeller also only lost to St. Edward by 7 over the weekend. Very impressive showing by Ben Davis, East Central, Center Grove and Chatard vs. the GCL South this year. I would be surprised/impressed if anyone not named Guerin came with 20 points of beating Chatard.

  36. Outside of the Top 3 it's just ugly football. Iowa vs. Wisconsin? You would have to pay me to watch that FG fest. Thankfully, our incoming teams (Oregon vs. Washington) provided one helluva game in the 3:30 timeslot on Saturday.

  39. FC physically controlled the game for the first quarter & a half. But then the clearly-superior Westfield staff made smart adjustments to put their players in position to win. Westfield's three 2nd half TD passes were beautifully designed plays & executed to perfection-- TE sideline out & up for 81 yards, seam pattern using mismatch of best WR on OLB for 46 yards, wheel to RB with play action misdirection for 60 yards. None of those passes traveled more than 10-15 yards downfield & those receivers were WIDE OPEN. Gilbert & his staff coached circles around West.

  42. Odds of winning the 6A and 5A tournaments for CI teams according to Harrell's site. They have Bloom. South with the best odds of winning the 5A title at 27.39 percent with Mishawaka, Valparaiso, and Ft. Wayne Snider with the next best odds and their odds are bunched together closely between 13 and 14 percent. Col. North and Southport are given little to no chance to make it past the 6A sectionals. How they came about their analytic formulas on this I have no idea although they said it was based on ratings, draw, and home field. 48. I appreciate it but, like I said, I wasn’t trying to get a pat on the back. This was a lot of fun for me to research. My only regret is that I couldn’t complete it quicker. Being a husband and a dad to two little girls makes it impossible to sit and do it all within a day or two like I would’ve been able to do a decade ago.

  49. I personally think it waters down 1A way too much. Lutheran would be bored. LCC would be too when they come back down. Are Lutheran and Springs Valley the only current ranked teams that would still be in 1A? Might as well go back to 5 classes.
