I am hoping not to speak too much out of school (and yet I will). My kids played at Chatard some years back but I have been around long enough that I think I have some sense of the ethos for kids at Chatard. My oldest son played against Merrillville at the St Joe Camps for some years back in the day. His comments would be long outdated and unhelpful in evaluating Merrillville these days no doubt. Nonetheless, Chatard’s goal is to win (fairly, btw) every possible game placed in front of the kids. Maybe it’s a regular season game. Maybe it’s a Sectional. Maybe even more... Just win....whenever Covid (which seems to weigh so heavily on so many) or God gives you the chance to take the field. In the end, that attitude gave them 14 State Championships. Just win....and if you lose be sure the other team remembers the bumps and bruises it took to earn that win. And play some hard nosed Defense....whatever else you do. I don’t like comparing teams but last year’s Chatard team ended the year #3 All Classes per CalPreps/MaxPreps and #5 All Classes Predictor per Sagarin. They seldom ended a game without a running clock. They could have beat anyone in the State on any given day....many times...badly. I fully believe that. This year is a new year....a new chance for legend. I think I saw an article that called them “a work in progress”. Probably so...seems an absolutely valid description. They are a very good team....but are they, perhaps, maybe, the best 3A team...or even, maybe again, a top 10 best All Classes team....which they clearly were last year? Friday’s game might tell that tale. Some here seem to expect the historic grind and pound clock control offense. Last year, Chatard could put 21 on you in 5 minutes between passing and running. I have no idea what to expect Friday. The only prediction I have is that it won’t be anything that anyone here predicts...with one exception. There will be some few bumps and bruises by games end if Chatard plays well, even if losing. Over the years, there have been damn few games between the best teams in Northern Indiana and Central Indiana. The Cathedral game against Penn is probably unfair. Looked to be a possibly historically good Cathedral team versus a down year (perhaps historically down) Penn team. A few years ago, there were some games between Central Indiana and Ft Wayne until the SAC, sadly, closed ALL doors. This is the sole and an absolutely incredible opportunity to have the most significant game (this year) between two State Championship level contenders from the Region and Central Indiana. Classes be damned. BIG TIME GAME.

I think one thing that gets lost in all this, hopefully by week 7 teams have been steadily improving. Perhaps we don't really see that watching the home team every week and whoever they may be playing. We had a pretty good team Friday night, we also had them week 2. From week 2 to week 6 they had gotten a LOT better in my opinion. They won both games, played a lot better opponent in week 2, but still you can tell, they're much crisper, block a little better, tackle a little better, everything is just sharper. Best of luck to everyone in week 7, we're in the home stretch, I never figured we'd have gotten this far.

3 head coaches in 3 years hasn't helped any.

It's too bad that these type of candidates have very unlikely chance of winning. More so on national stage than a state level, just not a fan of the choices for President and not a lover of Holcomb. I may have to go Woody or Rainwater,

Junior, Luke Hoehn was the starter. Hearing he was a victim of contact tracing. Freshman is now the starter. Very talented kid who didn't look like a freshman against Boonville. However, still a tough ask being a freshman playing against Gibson Southern. With everything going on, it's a blessing to be able to play each week. Can be taken away pretty quickly.

Yea* I've seen it done well, and I've seen it done miserably. I coached my daughter in Softball. I think we both would agree it went pretty well. We both shared a passion for a sport, and that was really cool. At a time when most of my contemporaries barely spoke to their daughters, I felt like we not only talked, but I felt like she still valued what I had to say, or was interested in my opinion. It doesn't come without it's downfalls, she was a pretty good player, never really got the accolades from the coach in the paper that she deserved, When games got out of hand either way, she was always the first to sit, so others could play, she was the one that got yelled at practice, many times to make a point to another kid who I knew I couldn't yell at. She knew she always had to do more than everyone else, and I think she accepted that and went above and beyond. I didn't coach her travel team, so I think that helped. I thought both of us did a really good job of separating the dad/daughter coach/player relationships. There were always nay sayers, we both heard the snarky comments, "the only reason she wins all those awards is because her dad's the coach", that sort of crap. As I said many times, the people who mattered got it, and the ones who didn't get it, didn't matter. Now with all that being said, the day she graduated, my coaching gig got a LOT easier. MS and youth, it's probably a necessary evil at most schools. Qualified coaches are not standing in line to take those jobs. Depending on the situation, the HC or someone has to lay out a clearly defined plan and have expectations for how the program will run.

Being one of the very largest 2A schools, having D1 athletes, and a coach like Barrett.....and it’s a success to win the WRC in its weakest year in the last 15 years, by a single touchdown. Hopefully Barrett is pushing for more, your kids and community deserve it, and so does his legacy. Ask woody Hayes, Brian Moore, or Herb King if winning a conference title Is a success if you don’t win a sectional. good grief. does Sv stand a chance in the sectional? Who are they in with?

There is no one way to frame this... In some smaller communities there just aren't many qualified coaches. Sometimes a dad may be the most qualified guy. I can say I've coached with several dads over the years, and I've never had an issue at all. It needs to be laid out there the expectation of team above kid, but if you go in with that, I think you've done what you can. Like I said, I've had no bad experience with it at the high school level. Some weren't terribly qualified, but it was all we had and they did what they could and weren't a pain. Others were highly qualified and were some of the best coaches we had. Now you want to talk MS and youth level? I've seen plenty of problems there with how dad coaches are.

Actually I believe the Bombers were supposed to play Twin Lakes that weekend. Munster was a close last minute convenient pick up.

Technically, no. We can get complicated with what down it is and whether we're in scrimmage kick formation if you want. But on a basic scrimmage play the offense is required to have 5 players on the line numbered 50-79. #23 can legally play guard if you want, although he's ineligible by position. But as long as you have 5 numbered 50-79 somewhere on the line of scrimmage, you're legal.

To my knowledge nothing has changed yet.

As I said, I thought Hammelman played a decent game against the Bombers. He had some nice passes but I was more impressed with some of the runs he made picking up first downs and extending drives for the Warriors. The Miner defense is going to have to stay sharp and watch for that and stay focused. I'm sure the Warriors will show up full of confidence after their game with the Bombers. Off the subject here. I'd like to see the Bombers and the Miners start a series with each other. I think it would be epic. Both of them are quality 2A programs. The Miners still have a couple of 1A teams on their schedule they should drop. The Bombers could drop 5A Munster since they aren't a very good program. In fact Munster is last in 5A this year and have been close to that for several years. While it may not look great to drop a 5A school and pick up a 2A, the level of competition would be much better.

Hope Heritage Hills gets healthy and can string some wins together before tournament time. I hear business is down at the Chateau, while Haubs is on the rebound. Say it ain't true. (I kid)

Honestly, the "bad" comments are a real stretch. In the case about the Brady disclosure, her dissent had nothing to do with being pro-prosecution, or anything like that. It had to do with the proper role of a federal court reviewing a state court conviction. Not surprisingly, her position was that state courts are entitled to some degree of deference when they determine whether something was fair or not in a state court prosecution of a state crime. Hardly an arch-conservative position. In the Illinois lockdown case, that was merely an appellate affirmance of a district court's ruling denying a preliminary injunction. You would be hard pressed to find a case at the Circuit Court of Appeals level, outside the area of labor law, where a district judge's denial of a preliminary injunction was reversed on appeal. Such a ruling doesn't necessarily say anything about the actual merits of the case in the long run.

Crawford County and Rock Creek Academy We outscored them 32-6 actually. After our freshman QB scored, they actually scored a fast TD. They went for 2 to tie the game and made it but the officials called holding on a WR which tackled our OLB. We held them out on the second attempt. The ensuing onside kick was kicked straight out of bounds.

One more time. If R is the first to touch the kick beyond the LOS, the next down is 1st down for whichever team has the ball when the play is over. Touching by R beyond the LOS breaks the continuity of downs. K does not have to reach the line to gain, regardless of where they recover the kick, if R touched it beyond the LOS first.

Brings up a great point....a lot of the old Turkey Run teams played with 15 or less players....and weren’t nearly as competitive as this Attica team is. Why couldn’t/can’t Attica do this? I am calling BS. I hope they draw either South Putnam or the Wolfs in the sectional....let’s see if they dodge that one.

Just wanted to give a hug shout out to the players, coaches, cheerleaders, and fans from Eastern Hancock last night. After the tragedy of having one of students passing away in the stands before our game last week, the EH faithful brought a sign to the coin toss honoring her. These kind of acts are what makes the game worthwhile. Need more of this kind of being humane to one another on and off the field.

I'll tell you like I tell other people, if you don't like it, take it up with Sagarin. These numbers are from his computer rankings. I am NOT making these up. I just look on his rankings and then compile a list. Last week someone complained that Andrean wasn't on the list. I won't argue, just tell you these are Sagarin's numbers. I don't agree with some of them either, but there it is........

Stinky, Stink, Stink 1.2.3. It's hard to bet against EC But you all know if you want truth Come get your advice from STC! BiG ReD & BlAcK has a stout defense that will keep them in most games in the tournament. They have some backers that are the best in the state. The defense will not be the issue. The deal is this, they do not have the offensive firepower that is going to line up in a 4A tournament and get it done. Offensive line is solid, running back, they lost their best RB (ACL), but STC will say this....they have a 9th grader that is going to be good! Stink thinks they have some WR's but the passing game seems to be on the back burner at this time. QB is very average, but does what all EC's QB's are taught to do. Handoff the ball! If the passing game can develop, then maybe....... Stinks Overall Prediction - Unless the offense comes together, the Trojans may have a hard time keeping up with some of the teams that can put up points. Stink is not saying the Trojan D will give up too many points. Reminder Mooresville took the Trojans down last year 17-14. Stink will not rule out the BiG ReD & BlAcK, but a trip to the Oil Can may be a BIG stretch!
