Since the Indiana Dept. of Education moved to "School Choice" back in 2008, there has essentially been "open enrollment" among all high schools; public, private, parochial, charter, etc. The only caveat being that if a student is already enrolled in one high school, that school must approve their transfer to another high school in the same district. This is the primary reason why you see some students move btwn the different school systems in grade school. For some reason, there still seems to be a sense of "ownership" among some folks about kids that live in their district. On the "near" west side of Evansville, kids live in both the Reitz and Mater Dei "district". There are kids who attend catholic grade schools but end up at Reitz (as is the case with several children in my own extended family) and vice versa. Although, it is rare for a student who attended a west side public grade school to end up at Mater Dei. The same situation exists on the "far" west side btwn Mater Dei & North Posey, and, to a lesser extent, MD & Mt Vernon. Both St Wendel & St Philips grade schools feed into MD under the catholic school system. However, some families live closer to NP or Mt Vernon, so that is where they send their children. A similar situation exists btwn MD & Gibson Southern with St James, a catholic grade school in Haubstadt. However, it seems most STJ parents send their kids to Gibson Southern over Mater Dei, likely due to distance. There can be many reasons parents choose to send their children to one school over another. Some seem convinced that when a child moves from the public school system to the parochial school system, it is based on athletics. This inevitably stirs the "recruitment" accusations. Certainly athletics can be an important part of any child's high school experience, but I think it is incredibly small-minded for anyone to think these decisions are based on athletics. As a past member of the ECIHS Board - think "catholic school board", I was privy to the data & information used to market both MD & Memorial to prospective students. When you ask parents what their priorities are when choosing a high school, athletics comes in behind things like: 1) Religious based education - which is often code for "disciplined school environment", 2) high academic standards (college prep), 3) teacher engagement, 4) community involvement, followed by 5) "athletic opportunity". The reality is that for most parents who choose to make the financial commitment to send their children to a parochial school, (remember, even state vouchers do not pay the total cost to attend) they are thinking well beyond athletics to more important like college prep, etc. This is why I always chuckle a bit when folks toss out the accusations of "you recruit" at Mater Dei, especially when it comes to football. Size & speed are among the top 2-3 attributes of most good football players. Mater Dei rarely has what anyone would consider overwhelming size or blazing speed. Honestly, if we recruit, we aren't very good at it.

Well, it’s here folks. 11-0 #4 Eastside travels to 10-1 #2 Bishop Luers. I expect this game to absolutely live up to the billing. Coach Mason’s postgame comments tonight were awesome to hear! I love when Coaches get fired up like that. It adds to what is already a big game for both teams. Thoughts?? Predictions?

Almost. Here is how it works. From the IHSAA fall bulletin: "C. Late Entries – accepted if accompanied by a check for the following amount: 1. Within 24 hours after deadline: $50.00 2. Within 48 hours after deadline: $100.00 3. Over 48 hours: may not enter tournament. D. Changes Prior to Deadline 1. Schools retain the ability to change their entry list at any time prior to the deadline by re-entering www.ihsaa.net and modifying their entry as prescribed in the instructions. E. Changes After Deadline 1. Corrections/Additions/Errors — prior to opening day of your respective sectional a. accepted with $100 fine 2. Corrections/Additions/Errors — on starting day of your respective sectional or thereafter a. accepted with $200 fine."

You were both right and wrong. The part you got right was "I was under the impression" everything after that is wrong. Here is the rule from the IHSAA fall bulletin: "IX Entry List A. A school must certify all players on the sectional entry list but dress only 75 eligible players at each level of tourney" and "J. Entry List Changes Between Tourneys No changes are permitted. A school may dress any 75 eligible players from its entry list of players."

Majority of their talent this year is in the sophomore class, with 7 or 8 starting on defense, and the 8th grade class this year. Don’t be surprised to see two or three freshman starting for Reitz next year, and I can guarantee that one will be starting, possibly even at quarterback.

2005 was when NP made it to the state title game. Since then they've run into a whole lotta MD with a side of Southridge and a sprinkle of Linton. MD will be tough to beat in the Bowl coming off a great win on the road at Linton.

I feel I need to back up my deadly accurate “wimps” statement: I’m old school. I grew up in the 1980s and played on an all-grass surface. Sure it would rain and even snow as the season progressed, therefore our white and grey pants and practice jerseys would inevitably get stained. But, just as helmet stickers go, I wore them like a badge of honor. That being said, it’s fun to get dirty. It means you’re playing the hame hard, isn’t that what sports is all about? By the way, my knees are fine. Football as it was meant to be.

Be careful what you wish for……some things are better left undone.

I don't know that. I do know that Winamac and their fans are quite confident the game would have been different if they had played on a better surface. I like this idea that Winamac had all these fast kids and Judson kids were slow or something. I don't know what game you were watching, but one team was very aggressive and flying around on defense and the other team was just getting perpetually bulldozed. It was a perfect storm for Judson. A whirlwind tsunami that blasted its way through Pulaski County and into the psyche of every Warrior fan for generations to come.

Maybe they have a tuition surcharge for underclass football players?

Maybe all the rain knocked the dust off their field!

Since Coach Lambert has taken over the helm for the Bluejays they have played Winamac 5 times. Judson is 4-1 and has outscored the warriors 121-35. Winamac can have all the credit in the world for beating the Jays in the Sectional Championship in 2020, but you do not get to change the narrative about last night. Winamac turned the ball over on 4 consecutive drives. Their last two drives of the first half and their next two drives of the second half. What kind of turnovers were they? Judson smashed Clark and he coughed it up. Multiple times. Compton had two interceptions. One interception for a touchdown right before the half and ostensibly that was the ballgame. Now, Is Judson in a threat in the North? You better believe it.

Winamac relied on playing a weak schedule to be where they were at. They ducked Judson the first go around and opted not to play when LaVille dropped. They need to get the MWC cellar dwellers off their schedule and beef it up. I hear the class of 2028 is looking promising for them though.

I have yet to hear a good reason for the rule.

MD’s sophomore QB has a brother that is on NPs team. Some of the MD players live in NP school district. On the flip side some of NPs players attended a MD grade schools and then chose to come to NP for high school. MD has grade schools in three counties (Posey, Gibson, Vanderburgh)

Thank you for ignoring my Pike/Bburg prediction, even though it was only 21-0 entering the 4th quarter before the wheels fell off for Pike. But LC has been a fun team to follow the last 4-5 weeks. Led BD at the half, stifled Carmel for 4 quarters (had 3 INTs), and then somehow pulled off a W against a team they lost to by 35 points earlier in the season. Either way, a new team gets to say they won a sectional for the first time in a while (LN or LC). LC is looking for their first sectional since 2012 and looking for only their 7th sectional title overall. LN is looking for their first sectional since 1990 and looking for only their 4th sectional title overall. That game is going to be an incredible atmosphere.

Luers I feel will only move locations again if Luersfield is absolutely unplayable. Otherwise, they’ll play it at home. I had heard that there was a few key starters out for the Knights tonight. I don’t know the severity of Hale’s injury but Rj Houge, Doughty and Aiden Dennis have filled in very nicely in his absence.

35-0 after 1. Definitely could have been really ugly. Freshman played whole second half so got the starters well rested. As far as if Tipton is as good as last year, I am not sure. I do think the defense is better this year. Eastbrook was probably the best team Tipton played last year too up to that point. I’m expecting another great game. Hoping it stays dry!

Just play the game where it is originally scheduled to be played. Chasing favorable conditions is taking away from the heart of football. It’s ok to play in the mud!!

I anticipate neither fanbase wants the other to have much bulletin board material. Winner of this game gets a 2nd win on the season over a team with a record over .500.

Eerily quiet, where are the Winamac and NJ fans??

The observer program has always been a good idea, but unless things have changed the last few years, it’s pretty inconsequential. A guy I used to work basketball with told me about three years ago that he was the only IHSAA football observer south of Marion County….and he wasn’t very far south. At that rate, stripes in the south could expect to be observed once every 10 years or so.

He might do well on the west coast given none of his competition out there plays defense either, but if Chip Kelly can't hack it at UCLA I struggle seeing Brohm doing it.

Because momentum in both recruiting and progress in each program is going in opposite directions and losing a top flight in-state recruit with Purdue ties to a rival school who historically hasn't recruited all that way would not have been a good look. As an IU fan I can get on board with this and hope it plays out this way.
