Correct. The all-in format is the only way to justify current week 1 blowouts. The second the sectionals are seeded and there's 100+ non-competitive first round games will only open the door to a qualifier which isn't what the IHSAA wants. So instead, teams like Shortridge are the sacrificial lambs.

Provide an example of a team rated outside the top half of the field that has made a deep postseason run. I've done this exercise for almost 10 years running. Cinderella in Indiana High School football is a myth, it doesn't exists. Teams rated outside the top half of a rating system such as Sagarin that advance under the current climate do so by virtue of drawing another team rated outside the top half of the field. There has to be a winner in this instance. Instances where a team from outside the top half upsets a top half team is extremely rare, as in you only need one hand to count the number of times its happened. I've yet to come across a team rated outside the top half of the field in all the years I've been tracking this data that has gone on a "deep tournament run".

North Judson is a HELL of a team to occupy 2 spots. I had them earlier this year, but I am pretty certain only ONE BlueJay squad came onto the field that evening.

Still one of the most impressive records to me! 6 of those 10 losses came over 2 seasons as they were in kind of rebuilding after losing an outstanding group of players that had only 2 losses in their 4 years. Coach Ralph is definitely great at what he does in the weight room, on the practice field, in the game planning, etc.

I guess I just don't see the difference if this game is week one or week two . The best team is going to win the Sectional , why does it matter which week this happens ? Both teams will play just as hard trying to move on , as they would if it was the Sectional Championship .

If you figure out the answer, bottle it and sell it. I supervise travel SB tournaments in the summer. This has been an ongoing issue for some time. I feel like I’m beating my head against the wall. I see guys/gals come into officiating and in the world of travel sports it’s usually to supplement their income, as you can make decent side hustle cash. At any rate they come into it with their eye on the $300-$1200 paycheck for a weekend’s work. You can usually tell pretty quick, the guys/gals you’re talking about will be expert officials in a couple of weeks once they figure out if anyone disagrees with them, they can just “toss them”. Then as the supervisor/UIC I have to deal with it. Here’s my thing I will do absolutely anything within my power to help a young official. What I’m trying to say is there are people officiating, who like every other walk of life are only interested in the paycheck. They have no pride in what they do, their appearance (proper uniform and looking professional), their performance, or any of the things you aspire to as a normal functioning member of society. They look at the weekend as an “quick and easy” side hustle and it just shouldn’t be that easy if you’re doing a good job. I spend a great deal of time watching hand and helping young umpires. But the uncoachable ones I don’t waste any of my time on. If they do a decent job no worries, if they’re a pain in the ass, I tell my boss don’t send them to my site. And I do hold the trump card, because as hard as officials are to find, decent site directors are even harder! Bottom line what you are seeing is largely a societal issue. How’s your experience in fast food restaurants today vs what it was 10 years ago? What about just your everyday dealings with people in general? I’m nearing the end of my officiating career. I feel like I’m working harder than I ever have. Basically at 57 it requires more than it did when I was younger. I’ve worked more games this fall than I’ve worked in years. I’ve traveled a little to do JV/Frosh/MS games. Driving an hour for a JV game and a $65 paycheck isn’t exactly adding to my IRA. Spending eight Sunday evenings driving two hours round trip plus the hourish long required association meetings doesn’t exactly add 0’s to the bank account either. All the time spent studying film, studying rules, casebook, yea just time you don’t get back. Or just Friday night at a large CI school, five guys get crammed into a little room with five chairs, two folding, one pisser, one shower, five bottles of water and five little Powerade towels. This is inside a gym with countless locker rooms in it. Left home about 3:30 got home about 11:30 for 80 bucks. I’m not whining about what we get paid or how we’re treated, honestly we probably get treated better today than we ever have. But there is this growing stigma out here there officials are all of the sudden getting rich, and it’s just simply not the case. But I will tell you this, the older I get the more schools I drive by to get to schools that take care of the officials, and it’s never been about the money.

I don't know which one is 3 and which one is 5. But one should be North Decatur and the other is north Judson

Some of those 10-team districts in Texas can have your season over before you even get to the halfway point. 6-4 could mean staying at home come playoffs ... even 7-3. Are you discouraging Mishawaka? 😁

Please identify the multiple state champs who would not have qualified for post season play under a format that includes 50% of the teams in each class, determined by a formula that recognizes a combination of W-L record and strength of schedule.

Both could be competitive with 6A top teams. I wouldn't say either are the definite best team in the State regardless of class. I would say they are among the best teams in the State. A list that includes Brownsburg, Center Grove, Cathedral, New Pal, and Roncalli. Right now New Pal's most significant win was against a good Westfield team (Rock's aren't as good as the last 2 years but they are still a solid team). Decatur Central is not very good this year and Mount Vernon is down from last year. New Pal definitely has beefed up their schedule the last few years with non-conference games, nobody expected Decatur Central to be 3-5 and nothing in New Pal's control. They still could compete with any of the top teams in the State no doubt. Roncalli has a solid win over Louisville Male who is good but not great (even though they beat Trinity they are 4-3). They did lose a close one to a good but not great Elder team. Roncalli is a little 1 dimensional but very good at that dimension. I would put New Pal at #4 or #5 in the State and Roncalli at #6 or #7. I think CalPreps has New Pal at #5 and Roncalli at #7.

I’m not sure how Seymour got screwed? Not a terrible trip, they’re not playing south two weeks in a row. Not sure they wanted East again, or maybe they did.

Week 9 Picks... South Vermillion @ Attica - Last win of the year for the Wildcats. The Red Ramblers are just surviving at this point. 63-0. Riverton Parke @ Covington - The Panthers manhandled PH to beat them for the first time. The Trojans had to go down to the wire with PH a few weeks ago. Doesn't bode well for the host team in this one. Panthers ground and pound for the win, 42-20. Parke Heritage @ Fountain Central - I agree with @Donnie Baker, the Mustangs are better than their record. The Woolfs are exactly what they are, 1-7. Not much of a Dog Fight here, 36-18. North Vermillion @ Seeger - Heck of a turnaround by the Patriots, from 0-2 to WRC champs. The Falcons could throw a wrench in the outright title, but it's doubtful. I think Seeger wins another close one, 35-24.

Because all the sectional teams get an equal split of the gate. A 10th regular season game between two bad teams isn't going to generate anywhere close to that amount. Look at Sectional 30. Washington and Pike Central will still get 1/8 of the gate from all 7 sectional games. The 3 games on the bottom are not going to be great gates (unless WV has a good fan base), but the 3 on the top are big gate games. If GS is in the final (very likely) it will be a big gate no matter who is one the other side. As bad as it is, the first round match-up between Wash. & PC will likely draw more fans as a tournament game than as a 10th reg. season game bc neither has had many tournament wins (PC 1 & WHS 16).

I missed "or a 10th regular season game against an opponent of your choosing" when reading through the posts. The 10th game would solve the qualifier issue with regard to revenue.

I'm sure you'd hear the same nonsensical arguments that you hear from detractors on here. "Every team starts fresh with a new slate come playoff time" "Playing our best football right now" "Kids have worked to hard to have their season end"

The older I get, the more I realize all-in necessitates the blind draw. Seeded sectionals with all-in would result in dozens of first round games like this one. At least in a blind draw, Pike Central can draw Washington rather than both of those teams getting blown out by Vincennes and Gibson Southern. (sectional 30)

Your opinion is that, currently, those are the top two teams in the state? Roncalli 17, Chatard 14 Cathedral 38, Chatard 0 I think you could make a case for New Pal, but not Roncalli. I'll defer to what some of the Indy area guys have to say if they want to chime in.

I don't disagree. Last year's Churubusco team deserved to play in a sectional final. They were the 2nd best team in the north.

Ben Davis/Brownsburg was the other game that caught my attention. HSE and Fishers drew a favorable road to the sectional championship.

I watched them swap them out one night waiting on the rest of the guys. They rotate and they used a forklift. Coach Radtke even treated us to Spaghetti Factory afterwards.

I bolded and underlined the portion of your answer that pertains to this situation. Had someone send me these screen shots from the video clip from twitter. Based on your explanation, and by this picture, should’ve been a TD. And again, why some frustration is probably warranted from Coach Salters. What would that have made the score at the time? Obviously would be a momentum shift either direction based on the call, either a TD or 4th down stop. Not surprised by the answers from the Memorial faithful though, I wouldn’t want to admit it was a blatant missed call that went in my favor either. And with that, it’s on to rivalry week!

Years ago, I remember people, not here, just in general, ripping me for saying the story behind Jordan's first "retirement" were because he had a gambling problem. Stern came up with this plan to keep it under wraps. No way could the greatest player of all time be doing something like gambling on his team. There are just too many stories like this for it to be a myth. At the same time, it appears Roenick had a problem too.

Carroll, Dwenger, and Homestead went all out by scheduling some mammoth programs. Luers loads up with 4A schools. Kudos. I agree that none of these games will come down to the end. Snider/Luers is always worth a visit though. Concordia could make it interesting for awhile vs the Legends.

My Jets should have held on to that lead last year but didn't.

If you took my comments as a complaint of some sort, you read way too much into it. Wasn't giving any opinion one way or the other. Just describing an exciting play for others on this board that may not have heard about it. I had no stake in the outcome. I was just sitting here in my chair in Ohio watching the WHME Facebook feed, enjoying a good game while also listening to Penn play New Prairie. Nothing more than that.

Just describing the last play. Other than the "Bush Push", which was illegal at the time and from inside the 5 yard line, I've never seen that occur in OT to win a game, starting so far from the goal line. Why the nasty remark? Is it because you didn't get the last word on the game details?

A big thank you to everyone who has contributed this season. We are getting close to the end of the regular season and are still only about 2/3rds of the way to our goal. It's time to step it up and fund the board for the full year. (That way I don't have to make requests in the spring when the funds our out and it's not quite time to talk about the next season)
