Here's why I think it's a stretch in reasoning and here's why I think you'll have to hold a gun to the heads of the IHSAA and LOTS of coaches to get them to agree to cutting the field in half ... and I'll use the proposal that everyone who wants to cut the field in half for the post-season often states: "Use a qualifier ... cutting the field in half ... extend the season to 10 weeks for all of the folks who don't make it and let them play one last game." Allowing an all-in, with seeding, cuts the field in half for all classes by the end of the first week of competition in the respective classes ... albeit with games played. This addresses would already address the "extend the season to 10 weeks for the 'non-qualifiers' and let them schedule a last game. It would also do it 1) within the structure of a system that's already in place ... after adding a seeding process, 2) without the scheduling rush and anxiety at the end of the season for half of the teams in the state, 3) allows for the potential of a Cinderella possibility, no matter how rare it might be, providing that glimmer of hope no matter how misguided some might consider it, 4) avoids any potentials for lawsuits/actions regardless of level of merit or potential success, 5) tying to #1, allows the IHSAA to maintain the assignment and structure of sectionals which in turn helps to reduce travel issues earlier on in the post-season, 6) has less direct external impact on conferences/rivalries, ... In essence, you get your field cut in half after the first week of play ... hence your "one extra game of the season." The seeding mostly gets rid of your #1 vs. #2 issue. As pointed out above, it also mitigates potential negative impacts, and, in the IHSAA's eyes, is fairly risk-averse. Again, while I don't doubt that seeding is a possible potential implementation, I find it very hard to buy in to the idea that there some type of inevitable next step to having a qualifier and cutting the field.

Both wings throw flags at the snap, home team picks up a first down. I’m told A has five guys in the backfield. I of course give the “do all” five yard penalty signal and we mark off the foul as the PA announcer announces false start on A. We get the ball set and I blow the RFP and in the quiet few seconds I hear that one loud mouth, “if it was a false start why didn’t you blow it dead?” I kind of chuckled. Told the guys in the locker after, that kind of summed up the evening.

We beat BNL my Junior year with the old “yellow punt”, the very play @Bobrefdescribed. I was a dumbass HS kid and knew it was jank.

HS does not have the same substitution rules as NCAA or NFL. There are no requirements to allow the other team to sub.

Let’s remember, I have repeatedly said that when Snider plays North Side, whoever wins the game has a very good shot at playing for the state title so I am not short changing North at all. If both teams play well, I like Snider to win by 10-14 points, but if they don’t, North has a great chance to win. I think overall Snider is the better team, but damn, North has some excellent, D1 caliber players.

The mechanics for this measurement were terrible. The back judge is supposed to be on the nose of the football. That doesn’t mean it was inaccurate. But it looked terrible.

Read the article about Thomas going out on second carry with knee injury. I hope for his sake and being a Senior it is nothing serious and he gets to continue and finish out the season! I never like to see a Senior get injured especially with the season he has had. Back-up played fine, but I want this young man to play out the rest of his senior year. Hope all is well at the Hook homestead!

Upon joining these boards about a half decade ago, I claimed the MIC was on borrowed time and that the HCC would be the superior conference in the future. Many users were in denial, some were on board and questioned when. Well, I am here to declare that on this 29th day of October in the year 2022, it is official. The torch has been passed. Even while still allowing the MIC to claim Carmel and Center Grove (and once again let’s not kid ourselves and go down that rabbit hole), the HCC put the icing and the cherry on top with last night’s sectional performances. For the season, the HCC was 10-3 against the MIC with Avon suffering two and Franklin Central suffering one of the losses. But can they do it in the playoffs? Yes. Brownsburg 48-20 on the road over MIC “champion” Ben Davis. Westfield 28-9 on the road over Carmel. Center Grove went into a mid pack HCC squad in Franklin Central and barely escaped 14-10. Avon went on the road and defeated Pike. The HCC has 6 teams left, the MIC 3. Still more chances too as three MIC teams are left on Brownsburg’s side of the bracket and an HCC team could come out of the north. Mic drop…pun intended.

Didn't realize that. Thanks for the info. I'm surprised that something like this wouldn't apply in HS; especially since it does apply in NCAA/NFL. In light of this, I'd have to go with @Irishman's solution. I admit back in the day when I played ball in Texas, we used to run the old "two off, one on and talk to the coach play" where one guy would come on and two would go off with a coach yelling his head off at one of the guys coming off. That one guy that went "off" and was getting yelled at would not leave the field, but would stand on the sideline, but about an inch inbounds and would stand there with his head down and hands on his hips like he was being admonished by the coach. On the snap he'd jet down the sideline, typically uncovered, as everyone was focused on the activity near the ball and not the sideline outside of that guy getting his butt chewed out ... having just seen the motion of two players "going out." I believe that since the caveman days, there's a rule that addresses that and makes that type of deception no longer legal. Have to admit, it was fun to run it ... along with the bounce pass trick play.

Sounds good to me. I like watching both Snider and Dwenger go deep in the tournament.

I'm not sure how Notre Dame will do against a ranked opponent at home. They look really good against ranked opponents on the road. Then they look really bad against unranked opponents at home. I'm not sure which direction to go in the Clemson game. It really depends on which Uiagalelei shows up. As bad as Notre Dame is at home, I don't think Clemson has a chance unless their quarterback puts together his best performance of the season.

I wouldn't even say tweak it. Whatever they're doing, it's working.

The gauntlet for a team like New Pal playing a MIC schedule is depth. North Central and Pike are bad but Pike is still very physical. The 4 other schools in the conference can beat anyone on a given night, and all take a toll on the depth chart each week. They would either be totally prepared for a 4A tournament run or decimated due to their lack of depth.

On another note, when you flag the play or shut it down, and coach lose his sh….Coach you remember before the game when I asked if you had any unusual plays or anything we needed to be aware of, that would have been a good time to mention this.

Saw a game list night where a team tried to do this on a try. It was correctly addressed by the crew. Coach said in all his years of coaching he had never heard the explanation.

Now I can die a happy man. I’ve lived to see the day when @temptationis rooting for Notre Dame … regardless of his true motivation.

North Side has a very supportive community. The crowd will be big.

Without Carmel and Center Grove, the MIC is the new IPS. It's indisputable that Indianapolis Public Schools has just been pushed out to the old Marion County. If IPS futility is any past indicator of future performance, your topic line should have been, "the MIC has just entered the death spiral". Not much of a story really.

North always saves their best for Snider. The Panthers will have to put their best foot forward if they want to win their first sectional in four years.

@JustRulesthorough discussion of the proper mechanics above highlights the importance of using correct mechanics. To the people (some of them officials, unfortunately) who say “mechanics, shmechanics, all that matters is they got it right,” this is a great example of why that is a fallacy. Even if this crew got it right, by looking horrible while doing so they are letting themselves in for a tough rest of the night. Everything they do from this point on is going to be scrutinized, analyzed, and criticized. And they brought it on themselves.

This may very well be a correct ruling of a first down but absolutely horrible mechanics and optics for the crew. Doing what they did warrants the criticism they are getting. We often say you would rather get the right call and look bad than get the wrong call and look good. That's not true in this case. Here is what I think happened. Crews often use the lines on the field to rule on first down. If they started this series with the ball touching the back of the B22 then if the ball reaches the B12 it's a first down. From this angle it clearly appears the ball reaches the back of the B12. The R likely knows this but decides to do the measurement as a PR move since it's 4th down in the 4th quarter of a close game. Once they extend the chains and it goes beyond the ball he realizes the chains are wrong. The next thing he should do is verify the clip was put down correctly. It's possible it could have been clipped on the back of the line but placed on the front of the line by the H. If you can confirm the clip is on the back of the line and still long then check the back stake and make sure it's in the correct place as well. If it doesn't go to the back of the B22 the clip may not have been placed on the right spot on the chain. This is all assuming the clip guy (maybe paid with a hot dog and soda at halftime) put the clip on that set of downs. This is also all assuming the crew the checked the chains before the game. We have chains that were a few links too short or too long and we had to correct them. As Bob mentioned the measurement mechanics were horrible on this play and contributed heavily to the criticism this crew is getting. As soon as you decided to measure the back judge should get down and secure the ball. This crew left it there for anyone to move it. We can't see what's happening back at the B20 where the clip is hopefully located. The L should be there with his foot at the spot where the H should place the clip. The U does grab the front stake like he's supposed to and puts it down on the press box side. That's about the only thing does correctly here. The R should be on the other side and ruling on where the ball is in relation to the stake. He should not touch the ball or the stake before ruling. That is horrible. But I do believe the correct ruling here was a first down. Use the lines on the field. The ball reached the B12 clearly based on the spot. Signal and move the chains. If the coach asks for a measurement tell him we don't need on because the LTG was the back of the B12 and they clearly reached that.

The paper is wrong. He is a junior and 3 year starter.

Congrats to OV awesome game. Nothing but respect to the GS team and fans you guys played well last night. Also you traveled well for a 2 hour road game. Patriot field was rocking last night and heard it was anywhere from 5000 to 7000 people there last night. With over 2 hours till kick off the stands were filling up. I don’t think there was other football field in the state if Indiana that was as packed and rocking like Patriot field. This video is not mine but thought I would share it anyways. There’s nothing Cinderella about the Pike Central Chargers. They’re in the sectional finals due to a broken format.

Let me present to you the Pike Central Chargers. Yet, in their first real game will get destroyed this week.

LOL, you can come at me all you want with your "receipts". I've been a big Boonville fan, but I did have doubts. I also said lack of discipline would eventually catch up to Reitz and I believe they had 4 PF in the 4th Q. I had doubts about Owen Valley too and boy was I wrong. By the way, undefeated Jasper lost in Round 1 last year to Northview, not Round 2, which means Jasper has only 1 playoff W in Coach Lewis' 4 years. That surprised me a little bit.

Clean sweep in the first round of 5A and 6A as top half Sagarin rated teams go 16-0 vs the bottom half. Top half Sagarin teams go 74-2 in the first round against the bottom statewide in our all-in format, proving that Cinderella doesn’t exist.

Gotta put on my big boy pants. Congrats to Owen Valley on the win tonight! You guys came out fast and physical and ready to prove you've been ready for the big stage all season. You have some real dudes on the other side of the ball. Looking forward to rooting for you guys the rest of the way out (well, I have to root for our PAC bros PC next week, but I think we all know how that will end (sorry PC, but you know too)). Congrats to Coach Gibson for having your squad ready to battle. Good luck moving forward, hope everyone stays healthy and you all get deep into the tourney. You guys have all the pieces in place, keep rolling!

I saw BN a few weeks back I thought this would be an interesting matchup. We talked tonight going to our game and the consensus was it would be 50 something 40 something and that BN could get a few stops to win it. BN’s got some dudes, QB was fun to watch. I think it’s an interesting off season coming up. Shout out to the seniors who played their final games the last couple weeks. We talked about it tonight in the locker room before the game, that last game. Contrary to popular belief IO does have a heart, and I feel for the young men this time of year.

I’m not sure anyone in the last 2 years has had as many sacks against Gibson Southern as they did tonight. Monster game from them. They stopped the run game and brought the pressure all night. i have to imagine that community is going absolutely bonkers right now and deservedly so. Hate that Gibson southern lost but this streak of 21 or 22 straight wins has been amazing to follow along to. Who knows if and when GS can create a streak of 20 + victories in a row against so many quality opponents. It was a special run for sure. GS will return a number of their players next year and I’m sure this is going to be some extra motivation in the offseason. GS had amazing teams in 2014 and 2020 that fell short in the sectionals and they came back the following years with vengeance. I think this current junior class is certainly up for doing something similar. anyways….Congrats Owen Valley!!! Statement win and happy for the community. Coach Gibson is one helluva coach and had this team ready. I’ve been saying it all year….sometimes it doesn’t matter who you play…sometimes you just have the right dudes on a team that can make it happen. Looking forward to seeing how far this Patriots team can go

It’s looking like he will be fighting for the starting spot with a kid named Michael Alaimo next year…I think Alaimo is a redshirt junior next year. i would have to believe that he is favored currently because next year will be year 4 for Alaimo and he hasn’t been on the field much at all the last 3 years despite the QB room having many opportunities to move up. That’s about as much as I know though. Still has to go out there and earn the job…and then he has to keep the job. I’m sure he’s up for that task though
