Perhaps the thread title should be ‘David is a myth.’ Because I agree that the David’s of the world (bottom 32) rarely if ever beat the Goliaths. Cinderella still attended the ball and had a blast, but the clock eventually struck midnight. So IMO absolutely a school like Pike Central is a Cinderella story… even if the clock runs out and their season is done. They don’t have to be David on Friday night vs Owen Valley

I've been to many Bishop Chatard - Hamilton Heights playoff games over the years. They all happened to be at Chatard (meaning at Broad Ripple HS... or Manual HS... etc) prior to the opening of Alumni Field on campus. This Friday was our first trip to Arcadia. What a cool stadium with the sunset in the backdrop at kickoff. (My first thought - what is this, the Rose Bowl??) Also - the fans, folks at the gate, and concession stand volunteers could not have been nicer. Just want to commend @gonzoronand any other HH supporters for being great hosts. Congrats on a great season. 3A is better when HH is good. The Huskies will be back!

The key here, for officials, is that you can shut this play down with a 5 yd. dead ball illegal substitution penalty, as opposed to worrying about illegal participation or unsportsmanlike conduct. The key for coaches is that whatever goofy play you can dream up, if it involves using the substitution process to deceive the opponent, it’s probably illegal.

You missed the point, your beef is with the football coaches, not the IHSAA. I would start with them, contact your local coach, I’m sure you can get on the agenda at the next regional meeting. OR write up your proposal and take it to the IIAAA, again contact your local AD you should have no problem getting in the agenda at the next regional meeting. As someone who participates in this process, I can tell you you will need to start by polling the coaches. IIAAA will want to see a high participation rate in the polling, at least 75%, and they’ll want to see overwhelming support for your proposal. You will need to have your i’s dotted and t’s crossed by early November next year to get on the agenda at the IIAAA annual meeting. You give your presentation and if they approve your proposal then you need to get in the agenda for the IHSAA’s annual meeting in early May, give your presentation and let the chips fall where they may. I will caution you, in my travels and conversations around the southern two thirds of the state, there is virtually zero interest among coaches and administrators to change the all in format.

I'll tell you what I am so happy for Owen Valley! It's about time they got it figured out. Next time on my travels from NC to Indy to Linton I will stop at the Hilltop restaurant have a great meal and gladly toast to their success! (Hope there still there)

Do we get points for betting this route? I suspect that it will turn out a lot like the 1A 2011 title game where there were plenty of cautionary tales about city vs. county speed leading up to the match. I don't know about hanging 80 on the Warriors, but I suspect that the fingernails of the Lutheran fans will be intact after the game. His son, who plays on the JV, says that's just a rumor.

The issue here is a player who is replaced during a dead ball and return during the same dead ball. And a substitute who enters and becomes a players can't leave during the same dead ball. You could potentially have 22 total instances of it in this play if the entire unit is replaced. It's a foul for illegal substitution and would be a dead ball foul as soon as it happens. It would only be enforced as one penalty though. Rule 3-7-3 if you have a rule book.

Upon joining these boards about a half decade ago, I claimed the MIC was on borrowed time and that the HCC would be the superior conference in the future. Many users were in denial, some were on board and questioned when. Well, I am here to declare that on this 29th day of October in the year 2022, it is official. The torch has been passed. Even while still allowing the MIC to claim Carmel and Center Grove (and once again let’s not kid ourselves and go down that rabbit hole), the HCC put the icing and the cherry on top with last night’s sectional performances. For the season, the HCC was 10-3 against the MIC with Avon suffering two and Franklin Central suffering one of the losses. But can they do it in the playoffs? Yes. Brownsburg 48-20 on the road over MIC “champion” Ben Davis. Westfield 28-9 on the road over Carmel. Center Grove went into a mid pack HCC squad in Franklin Central and barely escaped 14-10. Avon went on the road and defeated Pike. The HCC has 6 teams left, the MIC 3. Still more chances too as three MIC teams are left on Brownsburg’s side of the bracket and an HCC team could come out of the north. Mic drop…pun intended.

Carroll beat Warsaw by 36 last year against that same run oriented Warsaw offense. Carroll is better this year. They win by 28 easily if they put their best foot forward.

Based on regional location, not every team has the chance for the same SOS. It is a bias toward large metro area teams with easier scheduling opportunities. I showed you teams, some in large areas with 4 losses this season were eliminated using Sagarin. In less populated areas, teams with 2 losses were eliminated. Your answer…get a tougher schedule. That’s not is easy as it sounds for teams not located in larger metro areas. So yes, certain teams starting off seasons 0-4 can certainly mail it in.

I agree, Warsaw will try and chew the clock, but once they fall behind, all bets are off. Warsaw has played nobody all year and Carroll is the real deal, look what they did to Penn at Penn. Penn wants to run, run, and run some more yet that game was over early. Maybe it will be a closer game, we shall see

Not really. There will be SOME teams that can still be eligible after starting 0-4, but MATHEMATICALLY ... and more importantly, realistically, not ALL and certainly not MANY.

The 3 high schools that merged in 1970-'71 to form Owen Valley were Patricksburg, Gosport, and Spencer. Freedom and Coal City were Owen County high schools that had closed previously in the mid-60's. Quincy High School in Owen County burned in the 50's--but that is part of Cloverdale school district now.

From Wikipedia(if true): Built in 1971, OVHS is the result of a consolidation of several smaller schools located within Owen County. The three schools that were merged to make Owen Valley High School are Patricksburg High School, Spencer High School, and Gosport High School.

Jasper goes home after the first game of sectional for the second year in a row. We are on quite the tournament drought. But proud of our guys and how they played in a tough year. Multiple key freshmen got a lot of experience this year which will only help us in the future. Good luck to Memorial next week. This one might. In the early days of Owen Valley football (early 70's), they didn't have a playable field. They played their home games at Cloverdale. A few years later, they finally got a field built, and had a huge crowd and big ceremonies for the opening night field dedication game. The lead trumpet player marched out to midfield, mic-ed up, to solo the Star Spangled Banner. He missed two of the first three notes, paused, and muttered an "aww F#$@" heard clearly over the loud speakers, before playing flawlessly the rest of the way. Took it almost 50 years to drop to the second best night in OV football history.

Definitely hear what you’re saying long term, though I’d say Ben Davis is probably the 2023 basketball favorite (obviously different sport) and dare I say that BD will probably open as the favorite in football in 2023? Carmel and CG no longer being in the conference makes it much more challenging as annual title contenders were cut in half. I’m guilty myself (pot calling the kettle black), but it’s sad Indianapolis has, for lack of a better term, been abandoned.

There’s this kid on Andrean named Bowen. Indiana’s Gatorade Player of the Year last year as a junior. Notre Dame commit. Took over the second half of the championship game last year to get the ring for Andrean. Ring a bell?

35-7 over Penn is eye popping. Even the Indy folks can attest to that. I respect Temp's poll. He's ready to bounce Carroll and Snider like a yoyo. Could be up, could be down. We'll have answers after semi-state. I will say that Carroll's win over Penn should have put them at #5. He's being cautious. Right now I have Carroll over Fishers and Westfield with Snider right about even with them.

Here's why I think it's a stretch in reasoning and here's why I think you'll have to hold a gun to the heads of the IHSAA and LOTS of coaches to get them to agree to cutting the field in half ... and I'll use the proposal that everyone who wants to cut the field in half for the post-season often states: "Use a qualifier ... cutting the field in half ... extend the season to 10 weeks for all of the folks who don't make it and let them play one last game." Allowing an all-in, with seeding, cuts the field in half for all classes by the end of the first week of competition in the respective classes ... albeit with games played. This addresses would already address the "extend the season to 10 weeks for the 'non-qualifiers' and let them schedule a last game. It would also do it 1) within the structure of a system that's already in place ... after adding a seeding process, 2) without the scheduling rush and anxiety at the end of the season for half of the teams in the state, 3) allows for the potential of a Cinderella possibility, no matter how rare it might be, providing that glimmer of hope no matter how misguided some might consider it, 4) avoids any potentials for lawsuits/actions regardless of level of merit or potential success, 5) tying to #1, allows the IHSAA to maintain the assignment and structure of sectionals which in turn helps to reduce travel issues earlier on in the post-season, 6) has less direct external impact on conferences/rivalries, ... In essence, you get your field cut in half after the first week of play ... hence your "one extra game of the season." The seeding mostly gets rid of your #1 vs. #2 issue. As pointed out above, it also mitigates potential negative impacts, and, in the IHSAA's eyes, is fairly risk-averse. Again, while I don't doubt that seeding is a possible potential implementation, I find it very hard to buy in to the idea that there some type of inevitable next step to having a qualifier and cutting the field.

Garrett has lost control of this year's team at Dwenger. I feel Dwenger has gotten worse each year sense he took over. Will be going to Next week's game. Snider will Beat North.

I wanted to say this but haven't had time. My son is a Junior football player on the current team. We played the VL guys in the same class (2024) no less than 8 times from 3rd through 8th grade (I think we had the edge on wins in that time but just barely). During that time we got to know their staff/Dads really well. I can tell you that they remind me a lot of us when we started our stuff in the TYFL in 2001. They are good men doing the work of God if you ask me, cultivating young men to be great leaders, husbands and fathers. We formed a competitive bond and they still communicate with me to this day. The fruit of their labor is paying off. Coach Salters should be grateful for them and I am sure he is. Look for good things from VL in the coming years.
