This week the Irish take on the Midshipmen. The series goes back a long way — they’ve played every year since 1927 except for the 2019 COVID season — and is very lopsided in terms of the W-L records. Every year at this time you hear people criticize ND for playing Navy, lamenting the fact that a win over Navy does nothing to enhance national rankings, playoff chances, etc. Those aware of the history, however, know that this game is about something far more important. It’s all about honor, commitment, and a debt that can never be fully repaid. When WW II rolled around, the University enrollment suffered so greatly that they were close to closing the doors. In 1942 the Navy established a large V-7 training program at Notre Dame. Over the next few years, the Navy paid ND the equivalent of almost $8 million in today’s dollars, plus a daily stipend for each of the thousands of midshipmen who went through training there. This kept the University afloat until the war ended. The special relationship between Notre Dame and the Navy continues to this day, with Our Lady’s University producing more commissioned Naval officers than any other institution, aside from the Naval Academy. The debt of honor we owe the Navy can never be fully repaid. We repay an installment every year by affording Navy the national spotlight that comes with playing Notre Dame. For that reason, Notre Dame will play Navy in football as long as Navy wants to play. If you’ve never been to this game, you really should treat yourself. I have been to half a dozen over the years, and it’s still my favorite Notre Dame experience. It is most definitely not like other college football games. I considered suggesting Huntington North. They have a brand new facility and I’m sure they would be eager to host a tournament game to showcase their investment. However, I went with Norwell because it is less time and miles for BOTH Luers and Bluffton to go to Norwell compared to HN. Luers to Huntington North - 33 minutes, 26 miles Bluffton to Huntington North - 39 minutes, 25 miles Luers to Norwell - 24 minutes, 17 miles Bluffton to Norwell - 16 minutes, 9 miles

Sheridan has been stuffing the run all year. Passing defense is the major kryptonite! Everyone talks about Bud Wright and all of his wins and history etc. well I've seen every Sheridan game this year and the coaching especially on defense is absolutely terrible. They make absolutely no adjustments and just let the corners get beat all game long, even if the Blackhawks stop the run ND should have a field day in the pass game. 100% coaching is a disaster, not to mention they only run 3-5 plays on offense and sometimes run the same play 4-5 times in a row. Bud just lines up and says my guys are better than yours and we will find a way to win just because we have better athletes! Now that they are playing similar competition he will get absolutely out coached and sadly for the Sheridan kids they could lose at home in blow out fashion. Too bad too because Sheridan has a lot of Senior talent. Would love to see them pull out the upset... Sheridan will need long successful drives and will need to stop the ND run game for starters. From there will need to stay in the game by winning the turnover battle and special teams play if they want to pull off the victory. Hopefully for once this season the corners can keep the WRs in front of them and not give up the deep ball. If they can limit the ND possessions and win time of possession with the run all day attitude and get a turnover or 2... they might have a chance. All this will require the coaches to get their act together... Skeptically optimistic... but this goes 1 of 2 ways: 38-14 ND... If the stars align 22-21 Sheridan in the upset Go Blackhawks

Depends on whether or not they want to win a championship. There are many lessons learned from playing any sport. Building a championship team is one of them. Work hard and win in the game of football, work hard and win in the game of life. Not a bad lesson if you ask me.

It’s a great story, glad you posted Bob. I ran across this many moons ago and had often wondered over the years why ND continued playing the Naval Academy. Hats off to ND officials for doing the right thing.

The question is can L-burg get over the Regional drought? Its been since 2016 and they came pretty close last year. Nevertheless, winning 6 Sectional titles in 7 years is pretty impressive.

Don't know much about the Hannerville Raiders this year But sure Coach "Butter" has that Wing-T running full gear. The last time my Stink Town Tigers played Hannerville up in the Pit Those Raiders were so fast it was TD, TD in a lickity split. Stink has been away for awhile......but you still hear about that Tiger "D" in every town! The Raiders are not a tight as that team that travelled to the Pit, let's face it you all know that team was legit. Going to be a good one on Saturday just wait and see....Stink will be Crunk by 12:30 ready to burn the ships and slaying anyone he sees The rest of the Crew will roll into town too, you'll know when we arrive cause the smell will overtake you!! In sports of football and basketball if the game is at Valpo (most the DAC will admit) the flags favor the home team quite a bit. Or the fouls in basketball. but when they come to us it’s closer to even. But as you see above we had them at home earlier this year and it wasn’t even close to even. We had many long plays called back for “holding” which there is holding every play somewhere!! But if you look back in history most the time we go to Valpo it’s not even close on fouls/flags/penalties. And they are the only place it happens and is that bad

I grew up in Missouri where the ENTIRE state playoff system is played at neutral sites. It seems to work well there. But as we well know, Indiana does it their way...regardless of what others do. IN is well past the time to move on to a different outlook (beyond the Regional level for logistics/travel/monies/officials and the like) IMO. Start assigning both Regional and Semi-State locales to begin to get schools to think about LOS as a 'neutral' site, rather than allowing a "host (neutral 😃) site" host Regionals and Semi-State games. The caveat to all of this, is understanding that the "all-in system" will be employed up and until the Sectional Finals....then it's Neutral Sites from there on out. This allows IN to keep a modicum of the all-in...but then gravitate to what should be a fair playing field for both schools participating in IN HS football beyond (the) Sectional Finals.

This. When I observe a crew and go in after the game for the debrief, it doesn’t matter whether the crew is trying to get a 2nd week game … or trying to get a 2nd trip to the Finals. Their question is always the same: “How can we get better?”

I can only speak for one school but “yes”. I think it just goes with the program if you want to be competitive.

I don't have cable and thus haven't watched ESPN, aside from purchasing streaming to watch the College Football Playoff, in a long time, but it should also be noted that the clip that was posted was just that, a clip of a larger conversation. I would be curious to see where the rest of the segment went and what the larger context was. So yes, you are correct, there is no mention of race in the clip, but that doesn't mean that context doesn't matter and that clip is missing some context.

We (South Dearborn) saw Lawrenceburg twice this year. Very physical and really good speed. Alex Witte ran for almost 300 yards in one of the games. The pass attack was non existent. Their defense is legit. We had one of the top offenses in the area and only scored 6 point in 8 quarters.

Looks like WHME and likely other PBS channels in the state, will no longer be able to broadcast the State Finals for any high school sports.
