  1. I wanted to share a positive story about how a BNL senior has responded to a set back. The article below is about one of our seniors this year who had his season end prematurely with a knee injury. It was written by Jeff Bartlett and was in today’s edition of the Times Mail in Bedford. BEDFORD — Two weeks ago to the day, Reagan Bowman was enjoying one of his brightest days as a football player. The Bedford North Lawrence senior had just been voted a team captain for his final season, and it was an honor he cherished. Then, just an hour or so later, it turned into one of the darkest days a player can endure. Bowman had waited patiently for three seasons behind Class 5A All-State center Roman Weber, biding his time until his day came to become the starting snapper in the triple-option offense. That day arrived. Bowman was poised to start the next night’s scrimmage against Mitchell, fulfilling a boyhood dream. Then away it went. In a flash of tearing flesh, a season was finished. On that same Thursday when he’d been named captain Bowman suffered a high-school-career-ending injury in practice. It occurred on a routine play when a defensive lineman fell into the side of his leg and a loud pop was heard. It was a severed MCL that pulled away from the tibia and fibula below his right knee. He will not play a single down of his senior season. He missed the Mitchell scrimmage, and last Friday when the Stars journeyed to Martinsville, Bowman was under the knife on an operating table. When BNL travels to face Bloomington North Friday night in Game 2 of the 2019 season, Bowman will be on the sideline, if he’s even allowed to travel with the team. Dark days? For most people, yes. For this young man, not a chance. That’s because Bowman is a beacon of light wherever he goes and in whatever he does. He is simply a fine young man. Many will remember that this summer he helped save the life of a Bedford man who had suffered a heart attack. Bowman was present when it occurred, and he instinctively and rapidly went for help, and emergency personnel were able to save the man’s life. Reagan is also devoutly religious — his father, Greg, is a former pastor — and he is trusting that God has a plan with this injury. Then, there’s also the factor that he is still a team captain, and he is not going to allow himself to be down because he does not want his team to be down. “I got angry at the very first and I couldn’t understand why me and why now?” Bowman conceded. “But He knows a lot more than I do and I know He has a reason for this to happen, so I never really got down about it. “Things happen for a reason, and if I’m down about it it isn’t going to change anything and it isn’t going to help anything. I want to stay positive for my team. I got voted team captain, so everybody sees something in me, and me being down is not what they want to see.” It’s a remarkably mature attitude for an 18-year old, and it is not lost on BNL Head Coach Steve Weber. “Reagan is an outstanding young man, and there’s a reason he was voted in as a captain,” Weber said. “I just hate it for him because he had worked extremely hard for his senior year and had waited on his chance. He was doing a great job at center, and then this happens, and it’s a pretty serious injury. “But he has never complained or been negative about anything. Until his surgery he was still coming to practice every day and was very encouraging and supportive of his teammates. I think that tells you a great deal about his character.” Bowman started rehabbing his knee Tuesday, but doctors told him he’s looking at three to four months of recovery. Yet, he’s determined to do all he can to help the Stars. “Not being able to play makes you realize just how much football means to you,” said Bowman, whose hopes to play college ball and then one day become a high school guidance counselor. “But I’m still on the team. I did everything that everybody else did in the offseason, so I’m going to be down there with them. “I may not be able to play, but I can still do some things to help. I’ve got to be the best cheerleader I can be and try to help keep my teammates up and keep them positive when things get tough. “It’s not ideal, but it’s the situation I’ve been handed, and I’m going to make the best of it that I can.”

  2. He is a HOF for reason!!! Miss our days of battles with Judson, it was great to be able to hook up with them this past summer scrimmage with them Highland and Bremen Just a fact, your week 1 is always dicey, typically speaking Even in our 2014 year, we gave up 35 points to KV, of course we scored 65, but 35 points for that state team to give up that year was odd to say the least. Settle in and got the legs under them which many teams will do this week as well.

  11. Can someone tell me if this week's Seymour vs Jeffersonville game is going to count in the conference standings? The other six teams are only playing six conference opponents and are using week 2 for non-conference games. Seymour and Jeffersonville are each playing seven conference opponents. There can't possibly be an imbalanced schedule can there?

  18. Caston @ North Judson Caston turned some heads Week 1 and probably should've taken a 2 TD win but blew it at the end. The Jays turned some heads as well with their preforamce vs the Cavs... I expect the Jays to pound the ball, but for the Comets to get a couple deep balls to Schanlaub... Jays 33 - 14 Culver @ SCUM Culver had a disappointing Week 1 vs the Jays with a lot of silly turnovers... SCUM had a good comeback but fell a shanked kick short of a win. I expect Culver to bounce back and get a good win... Culver 36 - 21 Knox @ Rochester Knox will be wanting revenge from a tough loss last year and after a good Week 1, the tribe will stay rollin' ... Skins 28-0 Pioneer @ Winamac Pioneer didn't look like themselves week 1 and the Warriors looked bad, expect the Panthers to put it to em... Compton will air one out but it'll happen with a running clock... Panthers 60 - 7 Triton @ LaVille Triton looks lost out on the field and with decent skill players that cant compare to LaVille's... The Lancers will take care of business at home... LaVille 34 - 14

  29. Week 2 will tell us a lot about every team this year. It's hard to know after one week who is up and who is down. Interesting NLC match-ups this week will be Warsaw vs. Michigan City, Ridge and St. Joe, and Northwood with Chatard....awesome non-conference strength of schedule for the NLC this week.

  30. As I continue to talk to myself, I will go ahead and make my predictions minus the FF game: AC 21 Eastside 14...I think it might be close, but AC has been on a roll lately. Angola 42 Leo 41...I am going to stick with Angola and just assume that Dekalb has a pretty tough team this year. I believe this week will truly tell us a lot more about the Hornets. Central Noble 20 Columbia City 14....going with the upset here. CC is the favorite. Churubusco 28 Lakeland 7....I wonder if the Lakers are down from past years, or Wawassee, who they lost to last week, is better than they have been recently. Busco has won this one 4 out of the last 5, and I think the Eagles continue to roll. Fremont 34 LC 21......just going with the NECC and the fact that Fremont is currently undefeated. Dekalb 52 Garrett 21....I think the Barons are up this year. PH 14 Bronson 28....I don't know anything about either team...this is just a hunch. Wawasee 7 West Noble 21....West Noble has some good skilled players, and the Warriors will not be able to stop them. West Noble wins, making it threes years in a row that they have beat their neighbors to the west. I will add, that I feel like week 2 will tell us a lot about all of the teams out there. We will find out who is up and who is down after these matchups. Good luck to all teams, stay healthy and represent the NECC well.

  32. Clearly fake news, we've been told repeatedly by not only the former president and other polls, but the talking heads on TV that we can purchase guns online and have them delivered to our homes. With good deals on 1000 round purchases, why is this news? A LOT of people buy 1000 round lots to save money, particularly in 7.62x39 and 5.56/.223 rounds. If you shoot much at all, this just makes sense.

  33. The rule has a bit of a tee ball feel to it. Having said that, I’m all for limiting injuries and 73-0 games. I do wish the rule had a few alterations to it. 1. I think the same thing could be accomplished if the clock started running at 42-0 and only runs in the second half no matter the score. 2. If the score dips back below say 28, the rule goes away and now stops like normal. 3. Coaches should be the ones to decide if the clock runs. No team should be forced into it.

  34. How much better is Michigan City this year than last? The Carroll district of Fort Wayne is still exploding. All of the growth is to the north side of the city. I could see one day, maybe 10 years from now, when Carroll could be mentioned with the likes of Brownsburg, Avon, Carmel, ect. But they aren't ready for that just yet. For now and the foreseeable future, Snider and Dwenger will continue to own Fort Wayne. They have built programs that have sustained decades of success and their isn't any sign of a slowdown for either program. For those of you who don't know, Russ Isaacs still plays a major role at Snider as an assistant for Coach Tippmann. And Jason Garrett of Dwenger won a state championship in his first season. A Dwenger guy to the core. Both programs looked ridiculously good last week for it being the first week of the season. Carroll's victory against Luers, on paper, is quite impressive. No one expected them to paste them 42-0. But Luers isn't the same program they were when Kyle's father, Matt, was at the helm. I'm not saying Carroll can't beat Snider, it's just more than likely not going to happen if Snider brings their A game. For those of you who aren't from Fort Wayne, keep an eye on Homestead. That's the team that could be capable of overthrowing Snider and Dwenger this year.

  37. A prime example of the fallacy that the bigger the school the more potent the athletic programs should be, and the fallacy of the IHSAA's primarily enrollment based classification system. As I have stated before Frankfort is a "4A" school with an at best "2A" sized athletic talent base.
