  1. Are some of the kids wearing what might be referred to as "kicker pants?" I've noticed more and more kickers with pants that come down to right above the knee ... although my son's a kicker and still wears his stuff "old school." I assumed that, more psychological than physical, the leg was "freer" and able to do a very specific activity "better." Haven't seen any issues with those on linemen, probably for the reason @US31 implied ... it just seems nuts to be on the line without pads on the knees and anywhere else you can get them. Mainly have seen it with ball carriers; mainly receivers. Not sure if they think it makes them faster ... or heck, maybe it actually does. All I know, being a lineman, is that no one, including me, would take me seriously arguing that knee pads were slowing me down. It was the stuff above my belt and under my tail pad that earned me the nickname "Ice Wagon."

  2. I personally very, very much like @FootballKing16, but as regards Roncalli cowardice (and he loves to long beat that drum), my assumption is his memory is much less creaky than mine - YET he has overlooked the agreement that all the archdiocese schools, Brebeuf and Cathedral generated around 2006-7 (maybe a year either way). As I understand, Cathedral EVEN helped develop it....until they decided they wanted nothing to do with it and it didn't apply to them. At the end of the day, the agreement was that those participant coaches and schools (Archdiocese schools, Brebeuf AND Cathedral.) could reach out to CYO TEAMS on a GROUP basis to promote their schools BUT could not reach out to the next INDIVIDUAL "Johnny Football" ("Johnny Soccer", etc........or the ENTIRE Pike Township Jr. High Basketball ALL-STARS as it might have happened) or his/her/its/they/mutant ninja turtle's parents on an individual basis and tell them they were going to start at QB as Freshman before their brief stop to Notre Dame. From my observation, Roncalli stepped away from playing Cathedral at almost exactly the same time Cathedral said, "Screw You Guys!....we ain't playing by the rules we all agreed to. But the rest of you can". Pretty much a business as usual Cathedral position. Somewhat surprised anyone participating expected anything different. Rules are for the rest of us. I actually have long admired the Rebels for that stance.....at least, until they became the "Royals" (wtf?). Sign me on to @FootballKing16 as to Roncalli "cowardice" in that case....makes me kind of want the Irish to kick their morally cowardly @ss.....almost. At that point, Roncalli stepped back. Seems to me they just decided not to to business with someone unethical....speaking as a businessman. As to hating a school, all I can say is that as an unsophisticated, poor-@ss Irish, kid from the hills and hollars of southeast Indiana, upon moving to Indianapolis some 45 years ago I NEVER "hate watched" Notre Dame hoping they would lose every game in every sport (I actually used to be a fan of Notre Dame).......until I first stumbled upon Cathedral HS while having kids in the Archdiocese. Even better, as an Irishman (okay...German-Irish....I married a Catholic), I've even become a cheerleader of Cromwell's conquest of Ireland circa 1650. Don't let anybody think that Cathedral doesn't influences lives. Guess my work is done here. Me just making friends and building bridges. Its what I do.

  3. No doubt about Duke being much improved, they're good! Hartman and Estime's runs were epic. I just hope the Irish don't have another late game decision this week. It's tough on a fan of my age!

  5. I absolutely HATE being the "Uniform Policeman"... But every week when I see crews allowing untucked jerseys, and no regard for covered knees (prior to the action), its' a disgraceful situation...IMO. I don't get bent out of shape about BIG guys on the LOS... Who knows what sizes the schools orders for the average sized kid at this time of their life? Tinted Face Shields... Excessive eye black (we play at night mostly....ugh). The allowance of the rib protector to be sticking out, is stupid. I have read of situations where a kid has fallen on that and gotten a laceration of an internal organ. It may seem fashionable to some, but it is extremally dangerous to have it not covered by the jersey completely. Allowing the play card to be on the waist, and NOT reminding that it is to be located on the forearm(s). As I alluded to with the beginning of MY rant... It would be great if crews (officials) just tried to conform to the UNIFORMITY of what a UNFORM should be at this level of sport. I'll just wait for the next 2 weeks to come, and the BITCHING of assignments/evaluations will start all over again within our fraternity, and I'll (wash/rinse and) repeat the things that I say each and every year to them regarding the SIMPLEST of things that could allow them to advance.....far beyond being the UNIFORM POLICE.

  8. I disagree that the trojans are a top oline and dline unit in the conference. NV and SV both did whatever they wanted to do against the trojans up front also FC did as well. Maybe seeger just isn't as good as years past but since we are here, I guess I'll rank the lineman units 1. South Vermillion 2. North Vermillion 3. Fountain Central 4. Seeger 5. Riverton Parke 6. Covington 7. Parke Heritage 8. Attica Thats it the squirrel has spoken and this is final.

  10. And I would question your naivety if you really think that agreement is enforced, let alone complied with by the agreeing members. But that's not for here. The "agreement" also wanted to restrict as many "outsiders" as possible (if you catch my drift) and Cathedral said to hell with it. Cathedral's a diversified prep school with Catholic affiliation that is well represented within metropolitan Indianapolis. Been that way a while and continue to foresee it that way. And yes that includes lots of Catholics and lots of legacies, many of which are both.
    1 point
  11. It isn’t…..but neither is Brebeuf. But EVERYBODY else involved in cooperatively developing the agreement ultimately signed off….until one school decided it didn’t need to. Every P/P has to recruit every single one of its students. Cathedral is neither alone or exceptional as regards that situation. Public schools are free to everyone…..well…not exactly free as I realize each May and November. “Ubiquitous” might be a better word choice. I thought EVERYBODY at Cathedral was either a home grown, dyed in the wool Papist OR generational legacies…or both. So that is no longer the case? Admittedly, I don’t keep up with the current corporate marketing theme.

  12. Gibson Southern @ Mt. Vernon - The Wildcats of Posey have no shot in this game unless The Monstars invade Earth and steal the Titans talent. Pike Central @ Forest Park - The Rangers defend their forest and get the win with ease. Princeton @ Heritage Hills - The Tigers will ironically be welcomed to the jungle but not in a nice way. Patriots win with a running clock. South Spencer @ North Central - Tough game to call here. I will take NC just because they're at home and Thunderbirds is cooler than Rebels. Southridge @ North Posey - GAME OF THE WEEK! Could go either way but I like the Vikings and their strong defense to win at home. Tell City @ Tecumseh - The Braves are allergic to getting stops on defense. The Marksmen put up 40+ and get the win. Washington @ Boonville - The Hatchets are dull this week as they head into BoonCity and get shattered by the Pioneers.

  13. I see both sides on this one....To FB16's point, Roncalli had no problem playing CG for a number of years, until CG started beating them. (awesome gates for both schools back in the day) It is what CG is experiencing now with Carmel. So I understand FB16's frustration with the Rebels...er, I mean Royals. (just awful name change) But, Lysander's explanation puts more icing on the cake...didn't know all of that...I can see where "adults" got upset and bailed. Regardless of the past reason(s), has nothing to do with the players, coaches and perhaps sports admins today. Glad they are back playing once again. Time to let it go....I reckon' the man upstairs and his beloved son taught us all the importance of forgiveness through their own personal sacrifice for each and every one of us......although can be difficult, who are we not to do the same?

  14. The timing was right around the time Cathedral started getting "good" again and were no longer losing to Chatard and Roncalli back to back in weeks 3 and 4, like they had the several years prior. I believe Cathedral at one point had lost the last 8/9 games combined against Chatard/Roncalli. That is the coincidence here. Which is why the entire facade was completely hypocritical. "Let's drop the one sport in which we're getting our asses hand to us under the guise of breaching a gentleman's agreement". Nobody buys that. It was a convenient out. Cathedral isn't a deanery school. Never has been and never will be. PHJ says it every year and as cliche as it sounds, Cathedral literally has to recruit every single one of its students. They have zero inherent feeder schools. The presence of south deanery kids on Cathedral's varsity roster is minimal at best and has been that way dating back to the time of this gentleman's agreement. The CYO presence in general is dwindling and that has been a consistent trajectory. It's just a stupid hill for Roncalli to die on

  18. My point? That Roncalli's discontinuation of the series had nothing to do with the abovementioned agreement on how each school went about contacting CYO kids and everything to do with Roncalli's competitiveness (or lack thereof) on the field. The fact that Roncalli continued to schedule Cathedral in everything BUT varsity football only reaffirms that, as Roncalli is typically competitive and in some cases better than Cathedral at just about everything else.
    1 point
  19. Yes after winning one of the three they expected with what has been known was a strong group since they were in CYO. No one foreshadowed a long run of Roncalli dominance. It was a three year run, and the contract resumed after said run, I still fail to see your point. I don’t have a dog in the fight, you’re all cheatin Catholics as far as I’m concerned.

  20. Sectional 13 might be 5A's best sectional from top to bottom. Plainfield, Harrison, and DC all look like contenders and McCutcheon is no slouch either. It will either be Sectional 13's winner or a Bloomington team that reaches State and I don't think that it will be a Bloomington.

  21. I mean, you brought his nuts into this feed. Im honestly curious, who sits the bench that can help the tigers win? They are 6-1 coming of numerous post season wins over the years. I was thinking rebuilding year with youth and here they are in 2nd place in SIAC. Not one coach in SIAC is 6-1 with the roster Memorial is working with this season.

  22. I think I saw that Avon has the best strength of schedule, per Sagarin ratings in 6A, just by that alone, they would probably beat Penn.

  23. The continuation of this series was announced a few years back when Roncalli was dominating 4A under Rodenburg who had previously played Cathedral every year while at Moeller. Roncalli has been exceptionally good the last 3 seasons, its no secret as to why they finally would agree to play Cathedral again....they had a chance of competing. If Roncalli wanted to hold Cathedral to their end of the bargain, they would have dropped Cathedral in every sport, not just varsity football. This is window-dressing at its finest. It's no different than the MIC kicking out Center Grove and Carmel despite still playing them in nearly every sport outside football on Friday night. Cathedral returned the favor after being Roncalli's whipping boy for several seasons in the early 2000s and Roncalli couldn't handle it and quit. Cowards.

  26. Agreed. Zionsville can give anyone a fight, but Lebanon is the only team that Zionsville put away before the 4th quarter. And they have lossed 3 straight. I don't think they're going to flip the script. Avon could have a shot to take this one in the 4th quarter. But, I agree with Zionsville by 7 or less Noblesville will be starting a lot of Seniors Friday who have seriously given that program 100% every night since they where starting or getting major PT as Sophomores. I would love to see them finish out what could be their last home game with a major upset. I could see the energy of the night keeping it close and then Brownsburg pulling away for a type of W you're predicting. The 'Dogs are feeling different this year. Two teams who will enter the 6A Playoffs as darkhorses teams nobody wants to play. Both very well coached. Both with a lot of talent, including D1 type of talent. I'll go with Westfield by 6. They bounced right back and beat Avon the way they should have. I'll bet on Gilbert not losing 2 in a row in front of the Westfield crowd. Agreed. FC can compete with HSE. HSE just has too much talent and a very good OL with a TE and some WR's that can play. I'm surprised that Hamilton kid at WR has only fielded 1 Power 5 Offer (Kentucky) unless his offer list is incorrect on 247.

  27. Hang by his nuts? You must hate success. I’m sure you could find a volunteer job on staff and offer your great insights. I’m guessing every teams fans base in the SIAC would love to hang on to Hurleys nuts, all the way to 5 state title appearances and two titles in two different classes. If you find a better set of nuts to grab on to please let me know.

  28. I've seen Phantom of the Opera twice live and I have a recording of a London group on stage that's outstanding. I need to get that out and watch it again! I paid a lot more than $5 to see Phantom of the Opera.😉 Come to think about it, the first time I saw Phantom of the Opera was at Clowes Hall. That's also on the Butler campus.

  29. The only issue with #4 for Tigers is how hard he throws. The young man has a CANNON. Throwing to the 2nd string WRs late in the Reitz game, several passes went right through the WR's hands. Yes, they were "catchable" balls but not many 2nd string high schools WRs can handle that kind of velocity. Perhaps if he gets to throw to frontline guys, he will have more success.

  30. I'm not plugged in by any stretch of the imagination, so the best I can do is speculate. I hope that within the program they feel there's a need for a new arrangement, and I hope the administration is taking as much interest in the discussion as they have been in stripping all the character out of the place for about a decade or more. The die-hards are great. Almost all of them that I knew growing up have turned in their gear by now, but I have a lot of good memories of people in that group. They really got it in a way that parents and extended family just can't, especially as time goes on and we get further away from the start of the Geesman Era.

  34. The knee pad thing is the hardest for coaches because of the way the pants are made....because the pants may be getting on in years....for smaller schools, you may have several longer kids and only so many "long" pants....its hard. We always appreciate a crew that will work with us on knee pads. For the life of me I can't imagine playing without my knees covered...but the kids are used to it because we still allow "Contact" all summer in just shells. I don't get how one is allowed but on Friday night its a huge safety issue. I know the men in stripes hate the issue as much as the coaches, its the most frustrating of the "uniform" rule issues...(outside of opponents that still wear white numbers on white jerseys.😡)

  36. That Memorial/Reitz score last night went a long ways towards legitimizing Reitz for me last night. Given the closed nature of the SIAC, I’m always a little circumspect judging pre-playoffs but invariably those teams are good year in and year out. Reitz’ thoroughgoing win over Memorial makes it appear something special is cooking there this year. Maybe the only potential threat to East Central’s steamroller?
