  1. This reminds me a lot of Josiah Sears, who was recruited as a PWO and a fullback to play for IU in the early DiNardo years (DiNardo ran a pro-style West Coast scheme that used a fullback) and ended up being a key player on the 2007 Insight Bowl team, earning a scholarship. He told me, when Terry Hoeppner came in with a spread offense, "you've got to find a way to get on the field if you're a fullback in an offense that doesn't use one." He became a reliable third-down back and a key player for IU. Charlie's build is similar to Josiah's, but he's much stronger and harder to tackle and deceptively fast in the open field. He's a very hard worker and a football player - he was a linebacker at Delta, played some NT at New Pal last year, and will do anything he can to get on the field. He'll thrive with Michael Hart and the RB room. If there's a guy I want to give the rock to on third-and-2 and say "we need two yards," it's Charlie. He's also become a much-improved blocker at NP, running a similar spread offense to what Kalen DeBoer runs in Bloomington. Stevie Scott is a power back that's two years ahead of him, and Sampson James looks like he will have a similar power-back build, but I expect Charlie Spegal will find the field at IU. One thing we saw this year - especially in the Bucket game - is that you cannot have too many running backs. You're going to take a cheap shot at a high school student and lie about his age - spreading a false rumor that a few detractors have started - expect to be called out on it.

  2. Dumbing down is not what I would call using multiple formations, personal groups and QB reads. Need smarter players at all offensive positions to run.

  5. You can have your opinions for sure, but I wouldn't put it past him to find himself a playing spot earlier than most think. Very few kids if any have put in the work that he has in and out of season and he is faster, more athletic, and much more football smart than people give him credit for.

  12. That's a good list. To it, I'd add a couple names: Julian Edelman. A HS QB, he struggled to find interest from many colleges coming out of high school. He played for a year at the College of San Mateo, then transferred to Kent State -- playing QB at both schools. Bill Belichick knew he'd never be an NFL quarterback. But he saw enough athletic potential in him to take him with the 232nd pick of the draft, despite his being undersized for just about any NFL position that doesn't involve kicking a ball....at 5'10"/195. Jerry Rice recently called Edelman the best receiver currently in the NFL. Kenny Moore Every place he's been, he's been told he was too small. He didn't even play until his senior year of high school because of this. He played at Valdosta State -- most scouts who looked at him had the predictable opinion: too small. He's now the highest paid slot corner in the NFL. Switching sports, I also remember when Bob Knight was putting together a very talented recruiting class back in the late 80s. It included very heralded recruits like Lawrence Funderburke, Chris Lawson, Greg Graham, Pat Graham, and Chris Reynolds. One of Knight's assistants (Dakich, maybe?) saw a kid at a summer tournament that they had looked at once, but decided not to offer. The player looked better than they had remembered. They had one remaining scholarship and this assistant begged Knight to offer it to him, which he did. That player -- the least heralded in the bunch -- ended up becoming the all-time leading scorer in Big Ten history. His name was Calbert Cheaney. I know that scouts and other talent evaluators for college and pro teams are good at what they do. They weren't just hired off the street. I know that they're right far more often than they're wrong. But they're wrong enough that, if I was a coach, I'd probably put a high degree of value on checking in to prospects who, for whatever reason, didn't register high on the recruiting world's radar but are nonetheless highly touted by coaches and others who know the game....*especially* if I was coaching at a place like IU that almost never gets anybody above a 3-star and has to rely on the leftovers of the elite programs. I flat guarantee there are gobs of diamonds in the rough out there who could be fine FBS-level players, if only given the chance. But they just have this or that flaw -- a couple inches too short, a couple steps too slow, etc. I understand why scouts put such a premium on these measurables. But it's so myopic, isn't it? It's almost....lazy.

  13. Central, Harrison and Bosse are tough to coach at unless you are willing to turn a blind eye to off the field and even some in the building behaviors. I do give the current Central coach and last years coach credit for trying to change the behavior and hold kids accountable. Oxley and Schnur did that from day 1. It’s probably cost both of them their varsity HC jobs but at least they didn’t allow kids to dictate behavior. Hope both of these guys find other opportunities in coaching.

  16. Committed back in July but yes he would have been a massive pick up. I have a feeling Emil Ekiyor from Cathedral who is currently at Alabama may enter the portal. Was given a shot earlier in the year and got hurt and may never regain his spot.

  17. Losing his touch? Hahah one kid doesn’t get a scholarship and he is losing his touch? Only so much a coach can do on getting scholarships for his players.

  18. He lit up a young Indiana secondary who had built a lead and 3-9 Northwestern. Did alright against Wisconsin but like Indiana had built a big lead and was content giving up the underneath routes. Need to establish a running game and a line that gives the QB time to go through all his progressions for them to be consistent, but yes getting stops will be the death of Purdue next year in my opinion. I watched for 3-4 years as Kevin Wilson trotted out an NFL caliber QB with NFL caliber skill position players (and a good line as well) lose shoot out after shoot out because they didn't have a defense. Might be Purdue's best bet next year, but the B10 has much better defenses than the Big 12.

  22. Congrats Mr Spegal I don't think he will see the field as a running back at IU unless in mop up late in his career. The FCS is full of Spegals and got their schooling paid for.

  23. A) He would be a scholarship player elsewhere. But the in-state P5 people apparently didn’t see him as a great prospect at their level. B) I’m sure a lot of it comes down to measurables. They put more stock in that stuff than I would — but, then, they’re the people whose livings are dependent on making these kinds of decisions. C) Here’s to hoping Charlie proves them wrong!! I know I’ll be pulling for him. Because I’m tired of seeing so many of our best HS players get the cold shoulder from IU and Purdue.

  24. Kiser was recruited as a LB, so that should not be a surprise. And Spegal dabbled at LB and DL at Delta and NP as well as playing special teams.

  27. Niners game was a toss up in my mind. It was a fun game to watch. Interesting call on the fake punt of no DPI. I get it. There is only so much a DB can do when you line up in punt formation. I like that exception, honestly. As Rodgers said in the press conference, I am ok with ugly wins at this point. I hope we win ugly all the way to the Super Bowl. The Redskins D is legit though. The Packers are not the only team they have frustrated. They have a decent offense....not much of a run game. I thought Haskins was a liability last year for OSU, and he showed some of his old habits yesterday, hesitating in the pocket, not looking comfortable, some throws that were off.......along with a few great plays. He definitely has some skills though. That catch by McLaurin was unreal. As far as the rest of the schedule, I don’t see the Bears staying with Green Bay. I do think the Vikings game will be a tough one. While Cousins is the weak link, they have plenty of weapons, and their defense is rock solid. If that is the only loss the rest of the way, it is not a killer. I do want them to hang on to the number 2 seed at least, which they have right now. A loss likely drops them to number 3. Could they end up playing the Vikings twice in a 3 week period?

  38. Game was tight in the first half and Heritage Hills led 17-14 after the first quarter and 38-37 at halftime and took control in the 2nd half. Patriots scored the first 24 points of the 2nd half and outscored the Bears 32-3 in the 3rd quarter to increase their lead to 70-40 after 3 and the final score was Patriots 89 Bears 59. Patriots committed 17 fouls and the Bears 15 fouls. Patriots were 11 of 18 from the free throw line and the Bears 8 of 18. Heritage Hills scoring Sisley 23 Becher 21 Scherry 18 ( Scherry passed 700 career points tonight. ) Sigler 14 Johnson 8 ( first varsity points.) Kryzkowski 3 ( first varsity points.) Schaeffer 2 ( first varsity points.) Central scoring Banks 17 Windle 13 Brown 9 Madison 6 Byrd 5 Bosecker 3 Barnes 3 Morris 2 Joiner 1 How about the play of Cole Sigler tonight ? Just 8 days ago he was playing in the state football finals and just barely had enough practices to play tonight but I had him 5 out of 6 from the field including 3 out of 4 from 3 point range and hit his only free throw for 14 points

  39. Credit to Central for what they did in the 1st half. They shot lights out. Heritage Hills was not at all happy with its in work on defense and cranked things up after halftime, to the tune of a 24-0 run in just 4 minutes of game time.

  44. The goal of these arguments is to get the big bad schools out of their favorite schools tournament. I'm reminded of an article I read in the (Johnson County) Daily Journal the year before 6A was formed. CG had just beaten Whiteland and the article lamented the fact that they were in the same division. At the time Whiteland was around 1800 and CG around 2300. The article claimed there was no way Whiteland should have to compete against a school that was so much bigger. There was no mention of the fact that CG would still have to compete against schools with 2000 more students than CG. That didn't matter. What mattered to the author was getting CG out of Whiteland's way. I think that is what is being repeated here.

  45. So if the issue is the top echelon, i.e., 1-16 in 6A, what happens if you roll 17-32 into 5A and make 5A 48 teams? It would mean an increase in numbers of roughly a bit under 500 students for the cap of a modified 5A. Even accounting for the Success Factor additions, the current range of 5A, you are talking about a roughly 1,020. If you look at the range of a new 5A, using the current 17-32 of 6A, you end up with a roughly 1,500 range of the new 5A. More importantly, if you endeavor to make the new 5A spread the same as the current 5A spread, the new 5A spread would only lose four schools, not including the two from Success Factor ... the four dropped to 4A would be Seymore, Musnter, Mishawaka, and BNL. Given that mix, you'd probably just leave those four in 5A and go with a 48-team new 5A class.
