In response to what Bob said above I think is extremely important to "control what you can control". Our crew too has been disappointment by lack of advancement for many many years (started our crew in 2008). We were observed week 1 in 2016. Our observer was completely honest with us. He said our crewed was over weight at certain positions and that we appeared to be slow because of the weight some of our guys carried. So you know what I did, I went and looked at our films. That game and of every game throughout the year. We did look slow, we were out of position at times. I challenged our crew. I said, "if you want to get to the promise land, we need to change our perception of being slow". So that summer our crew made 1 personnel change and 2 other guys lost a combined 125 lbs. It hurt at the time to hear what the observer said, we were pissed and we moaned about it for weeks. We complained about other crews and how far they were advancing. But in hind sight, it was exactly what we needed to hear. The following year we were observed and received excellent reviews. I continued to break down every game. And I don't mean looking back to see if we got the calls right or wrong, I'm talking about watching every play. Looking at mechanics, looking at positioning, looking at our eyes, where our focus is / where it should be. Controlling the things we can control: preparation, fitness, hustle, and appearance/perception. Challenge yourself and your crew. Even if you don't care about the tournament, it will bring yourself satisfaction to know you are doing everything in your control to officiate to best of your ability on any given Friday night.

The Southridge obsession with Mater Dei and 2A football is starting to reach unhealthy levels.

At halftime monster Parris and his boys tried to get back on the bus, but worst of all the Clown and his crew didn't show up to party with us. You need the unsuccessful factor to balance it out. Earn points for not making it or winning sectionals and get bumped down that would make thing competitive across the board.

I understand your frustration. We could spend a fair amount of time discussing the flaws — and, in fact, the counter-incentives — of the coaches’ vote system. But to what purpose? The inescapable fact is that playoff officiating assignments is a zero sum game. There are a finite number of assignments, and some crews are going to be disappointed. I’ve had many conversations with @JustRules and other officials on this subject, and it always ends up the same way: you can’t control how coaches vote. You can control how much effort to improve you put into your officiating. Control what you can control, and let the other stuff sort itself out.

I don’t know if this is the case at all, but I do know in the past there have been instances where a crew should have worked — according to their rating — a sectional final. But because of a clerical error when tabulating the vote, they were not assigned. The IHSAA then decided, in fairness, to treat them going forward as if they had actually worked that sectional final.

Depending on configuration, it's about 67,000. A better way to probably figure it out is that, at the end of September, Marion County was allowing about 7,500 for the Colts game ... the one with the Jets. My guess is that, if we go on lockdown levels again, that might be what they go with ... given that they've done it before and have a blueprint already for it. The next level would be when they increased to around 12,500 back at the start of October in the game with the Bengals. Both of those would be blueprint configs that they've run with and managed, so those are likely decent starting points for conjecture.

I understood very well that TC was shorthanded against L-S. If you go back and read my post, that's not what I was comparing. I was comparing Southridge vs L-S and MD vs. L-S results. That was the only common opponent. You're entitled to your opinion about which sectional 40 team would be at the regional, but it's only your opinion. I'm sure for your sake you would like to believe that Tell City would've been there since they gave you a scare, and it would make you feel better about your chances of beating MD. I know several of the kids on the Tell City team and was looking forward to a Tell City/MD battle. Unfortunately it didn't happen.

Look, I am rooting big time for The Ridge, but this talk has got to stop. Sounds like an excuse just in case things don't go well Saturday. SR 525 Students HH 601 Students Lawrenceburg 584 All seems pretty close in comparison when looking a enrollments for rural area 3A schools.

Stinky, Stink, Stink 1.2.3. Saturday wont be the measuring stick as Yoon will play the whole game. From watching both on StinkTube (YouTube) in the shop Stink will bust this rhyme. Last years Pats would spank these Raiders behind. Stink would wonder how these Raiders stop HH running behind that big line? The Raiders appear to be good and they are 12-0, but last years Pats blow them out and drink free at the Chateau!

I'm not insinuating that SR would not compete. I think they would have ended up around 5-4 or 4-5 in the conference depending what team they replaced, but games would have been competitive.

I've started thinking the same thing. Half of the posts I see someone is commenting that they are actually a 2A school. It's almost like they think since they were bumped to 3A that they own 2A football in southern Indiana. I think there is respect for their program and what they've accomplished, but I don't think anyone, especially Mater Dei, is scared of them. Their game with Tell City this year is a prime example. Maybe they should play a game with MD after the postseason is over...or Jasper, Central, Castle, Memorial, or North. If you look at common opponents, and I hate to bring L-S into this, but Southridge beat L-S 28-0. MD was up 37-0 early in the 3rd when they called off the dogs...

With what is going on Covid-related and changes many schools are probably going to make in the days ahead, let's all just sit back and hope the state finals take place and any fans getting to attend will be icing on the cake!

I have a lot of that same feeling. But based on Book’s performance last week, I’m willing to accept the possibility that he has finally overcome whatever barrier there was to him getting to that next level. It looked like he and some of those promising receivers were finally getting on the same page. He’s got 4 very winnable games left to really fine tune the passing game. This is no time to let up on the gas. They need to take these next 4 opponents to the woodshed to create momentum going into the ACC championship game.

Certainly glad you recognize the predictions are not from our troupe. We know what we are up against. The stupid success factor rule has caused this. The only thing we can predict is that we will play hard.

The problem is that why would someone want to get better when it does indeed look like they are getting overlooked? I mean my crew is going to continue to try, but I could understand why someone would feel that way. That second year crew has to have some experience on it to get a regional game, I assume. If not, then what is the point for someone that has done it longer? I get the reasoning. Sometimes just doing it for the kids isn't the best for everyone. I also feel like we should know what schools rate us, and why? How can we get better if we can't ask them/know why?

Officials are not the only ones who read the Officiating Forum. There are a lot of people on here, some of them coaches, who learn things here they wouldn’t otherwise know.

When Private schools take over 6A then where? MAC or Big 10? Why not make your school better.

I'd say Chatard is a sure bet to pick up another regional title. Roncalli has a tough test at Mt. Vernon. The winner of this game is probably a slight favorite to represent the north in the finals, although Mooresville and/or Evansville Memorial will be a test in the semistate. Heritage Christian gets two-time defending 2A champ Western Boone. The Stars are playing their best football right now and will be a strong test for HC. Covenant Christian gets undefeated South Putnam, who had trouble with the pass D against Parke Heritage. After knocking off 1A favorite Lutheran, will CC have a hangover from that big win? I'd say that 2 of the 4 CCC teams make it to semistate.

I'm not sure why what we are currently using doesn't work. If a team is successful and earns enough points they "bump up". If they continue to be successful they continue to move up the ladder. Maybe we change the points system or what it takes to "bump up", but just moving all private schools up based on twice their enrollment regardless of success seems ignorant. There is no reason a school of any size should be penalized and placed in a class well above their enrollment when they might have an absolutely horrible athletic program. Indiana classed all sports many years ago to give more kids a chance to be successful. Now it appears some don't feel the right people are benefitting from classification.

If you're using a multiplier as the basis for competitive balance, how is doubling the enrollment of "p/p school x with a moribund football program" achieving that? It doesn't, which is why a multiplier is the single dumbest argument for achieving competitive balance.

Your initial premise is, if not flawed, at least premature. Pretty hard to design a fix to address “long term impact” when we are not even through the season. Describe the “long term impact” ... and the crystal ball you used to foresee it.
