Guess what high school football isn't about the fans, it's about the kids. If I can't attend a game for the rest of the season, but they can still play that's 100% a trade off that anyone can live with. See above. How would you like to see Ben Davis forfeit because they ignored the precautions and someone tested positive? This has been a unique year and we are a couple weeks away from the state title. I think we should be willing to do anything it takes to see that the season is able to finish.

In 1A sometimes there's not so much grass either. Heard a visiting team kid complain once getting off the bus that it was a shame that their opponent made them park all the way in the back of this gravel parking and that they had such a long walk to the field. The bus driver said to the kid, "Quit your b*tchin'. What do you want? I drove you right up to the 50 yard line."

There are dozens of systems around the country for evaluating officials and determining postseason advancement. They are all flawed. As Bob says though, it's a zero sum game. If there are 140 crews that applied for the tournament and 48 of them get a sectional final, 92 are going to feel they got screwed. If you come up with a different rating system, 92 of them are still going to feel they were screwed. If they get angry enough they will also quit. Same result just a different group. Either way the IHSAA loses officials. By my count 36 crews were eligible for 24 regional final games so no matter what system is used 12 of them are going to feel slighted if they don't advance. There is no system that allows all 36 crews to advance. I have friends who officiate in the NCAA and NFL and guess what...they bitch about their playoff assignment system. They are graded on every play and too many downgrades will keep you from a post season assignment, but several officials have similar ratings at the end of the year so the supervisor's opinion plays a huge factor. If you don't get the best bowl assignment you assume he doesn't like you. Or if you go a couple years without a postseason assignment you feel it's not fair. One NFL official told me one theory for them is the NFL decides mid-season which officials they want in the Super Bowl and suddenly all their close calls get graded correct and a couple close calls for other officials are downgraded. Likely not true but that's there perception. I do feel any system that provides significant weight to a coach vote is a completely flawed system. There is no way to logically justify it. How would coaches like it if parents decided if they got to keep their job for the next year? Of if the media would get to vote after a game and decide who advances? But this system is easy for the IHSAA to administer and takes very little effort other than data to set up the rating process. They get a number assigned to each official or crew depending on the sport and slot people based on objective data. But the inputs of that data is very flawed and not at all based on any input from any non-biased individual who understands the rules, mechanics and philosophies of officiating.

People officiate for different reasons. For most people interested in primarily money, they either quit after a short time — or they’re really bad at economics.

It might be good to keep in mind that these rough, tough, & manly college & pro teams playing in below freezing temps have all sorts of hi-tech, cold weather gear like ponchos, thermal gloves, heated bleachers, etc. at their disposal. Talk about "soft"! Few if any high school programs have the proper sideline equipment to cope with these kinds of temps. I t would also be good to keep in mind these are high school kids, not professional athletes who are being well compensated for their efforts.

Never. If we move a game because of it being too cold, then football has officially become soft.

In all honesty, my sentiments (in most things football related as well) probably falls not too far from @PhilLee ‘s. With that, much like what @Prospect has stated, I’ll do whatever it takes (as a fan) to see the kids and coaches put together this Frankenstein monster of a 2020 season and ride it to some kind of completion. My better half and I had already decided we weren’t going to LOS if the opportunity presented. In part because we have some aged and ailing older relatives we are involved in the care of and in part because we just don’t want the potential hassle. if we can just cull 3 more weeks out of this beast I’ll consider it a mission accomplished. @BobRef - thinking I might need one of your “cliche call-outs” for the above. I am aspiring for 100% on the cliche meter....someday.

One of the perks of the Indiana tournament is the chance to play your final game inside at Lucas Oil. An outside venue would seriously reduce attendance.

Don't pull me into this LOL! I can say both teams were battle tested from the PAC. Southridge in the shotgun wing T is hard to prepare for because even if you can run the plays on scout, game speed is a whole different animal. Coach B. will add a little bit to the play book each week as well. Should be a fun game.

AH, the good old days! I do watch the games on my computer as much as I can, but while I was teaching I was closer to the hearts and minds of the players. I miss being in the stands and collecting pre- game newspaper articles and forum quotes to post on the wall outside my classroom. By this time of year, that wall was full from door to door.

Why am I not surprised by this. It's not always about the bottom line. I started late, but yes, it was for the extra income. Thankfully, I've done well enough in my career that the football money is the least of my concerns. I enjoy it, I like hanging out with our crew, and I hope to eventually work on Thanksgiving weekend. If that happens, I'll lose money, but enjoy every minute of it.

The only time I could see this happening would be if the temp was so low frostbite was a legitimate concern.

6A: Homestead at Westfield: Homestead has shown in the later half of the year that they are the best in the Fort Wayne area. The Shamrocks have proven all year they’re one of central Indiana’s best. Should be a good one. Westfield by 7 5A: Bishop Dwenger at Zionsville. Zionsville is a solid all around team from what I’ve seen and heard, but this Saints team is just too talented. Dwenger by 10. 3A: Concordia at Bishop Chatard. The cadets defense has been stout all year against tough competition in the SAC, but Chatard is a different animal. Can Concordias offense play their best game of the year?? We shall see. Chatard by 17. 2A: Luers at Tipton. The Knights come in after an impressive offensive showing against #4 Eastside but once again the defense was nowhere to be found. Tipton on the other hand plays well on both sides of the ball and this game is at Tipton. If it’s another shootout, Luers by 7. If Tipton can get stops, I like the Blue Devils by 7.

People are either really good at not reading, or really good at trolling and forcing panic. State does not seem to be in much jeopardy, the restrictions seem to be the same that they’ve been anyway for this event. Plus, Marion county is already working with Los to have state with some fans.

In a perfect world (meaning no-SCF) we could have had Mater Dei vs Southridge for the 40 title and Memorial vs Gibson Southern last week for the right to face Lawrenceburg this weekend. That's not the case. Good luck to MD and SR in their actual games.

Totally agree. Concordia's offense is going to really need to step it up this week and the defense cannot afford to fall apart like the Carroll game. If Concordia plays a perfect, mistake free game then this will be close.

Sagarin ratings are a nice metric, but they are flawed. They're dependent on having some out-of-conference games to inject a comparison and get a result. If no regular season out-of-conference games, like the SIAC is now, the Sagarin is basically worthless. Since post-season started, and SIAC teams continue to move on, the Sagarin ratings for teams in the SIAC will continue to climb. I hope Mooresville, Lawrenceburg, and Triton Central are preparing their teams based off of the Sagarin ratings... I would bet the farm on Castle on a Southridge -1 line, and I definitely think you would struggle with Central. I doubt if Southridge -1 would be the Vegas line. In the past 20 years you are like 4-16 against Jasper. There's a lot of Jaspers in the SIAC. Usually anywhere from 3 to 6 depending on the year. During the same time, I think you are basically .500 versus MD, which is respectable, but not dominant. Under Coach Buening, you guys are averaging 9.5 wins a season which is also very respectable. As I said before, I think everyone respects Southridge and what you guys have achieved, especially recently. No doubt you guys would compete. You definitely have some athletes, solid coaching, and the kids play hard. No one would take you lightly. You have a talented team this year and best of luck this weekend.

From a semantical perspective, you are correct. I should have chosen my words more carefully. Mea culpa. However, the larger point I was trying to make is still relevant. In my opinion, it is a poor argument to cite that “other states have done it” as your main justification for an action. States are different, school systems are different, governing bodies - ie IHSAA, are different. If someone wants to implement some sort of a multiplier, do some research, show your work and back up your suggestion with data that is relevant to our state. Don't start with a flawed theory supported only by your own opinions...mi dos centavos.

Oh I know that! But you are correct. it's hard to look at those 3 games and think otherwise. Until we can defend that kind of passing attack...and have a dependable dangerous pass attack ourselves on a regular basis to keep teams from loading the box.... we are always going to run into trouble.

I understand your frustration. We could spend a fair amount of time discussing the flaws — and, in fact, the counter-incentives — of the coaches’ vote system. But to what purpose? The inescapable fact is that playoff officiating assignments is a zero sum game. There are a finite number of assignments, and some crews are going to be disappointed. I’ve had many conversations with @JustRules and other officials on this subject, and it always ends up the same way: you can’t control how coaches vote. You can control how much effort to improve you put into your officiating. Control what you can control, and let the other stuff sort itself out.

So long as they don’t have a “Thomas” it should all be good.......dude’s got a negative attitude. A real doubter.
