Coach George Gilbert passed away last night. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. I will post arrangements when they are available.

Stinky, Stink, Stink 1.2..3.. This Knight showed up last night for Halloween! He took a handful of candy and said hi daddy aka Stinky! I always thought there was a possibility of one running around I just didn't think he would be in 6th grade, wearing Knight's gear and weighing 180 pounds!

The jokes about the hat, the tie and the short-sleeved white shirt aside, his teams always executed well and played hard. The family has had a tough last couple of years. Prayers to the Gilbert family and to Coach Gilbert.

As an official contrary to popular belief you really don’t care who wins or loses. After 40 plus years even watching your hometown team you kinda become detached. I have gotten to the point where I don’t even watch a lot of Football anymore, I tended to officiate from my chair, I’m counting players, checking alignments, etc., in stead of just watching. This fall Seymour’s youth league was brought back into the school system. We developed a training system for Seymour players who we’re interested in officiating the youth league games. The key to it all was getting the players paid for officiating. We had great support from the administration. Honestly I was hoping to get 2-3 guys, I was somewhat amazed at our turnout. Ended up with 9 guys who worked the whole season. I white hatted all games and we used four man crews for every game. I had a blast getting to know these young men, and doing the training. We worked the games and they grew by leaps and bounds as young officials. I’ve long said sports are about relationships, and the key takeaway for me is in building relationships with these young men, I have become a fan again. I take care of the officials at Seymour home games and during the games I watch just like everyone else, and I’m rooting for them. It’s been incredibly positive for me. And hopefully I’ve made some small impact on these young men as well. With all that being said I’m going to believe in my guys and I’m taking Seymour over BHSS Friday night, I believe in them and I think they’re going to get it done. Go Owls!

My predictions: 5A - North @ Castle. Harrell has North -3, but I question whether North can win two big games in a row. McCool is a tough RB, so I'll go with Castle 24-14. 4A - Reitz @ Memorial. Either way the winner gets their a$$e$ run through the Ringer the next week by East Central. Harrell has Reitz -14. I'd love to go with my heart and pick my Tigers, but Reitz has too many weapons and our O is limited. Reitz 35-13. 3A - VL @ Gibson Southern. Harrell has GS -4. Both teams have some explosive, experienced players. I'll take GS 35-34 in OT - VL goes for 2, GS has 12 on the field, stuffs the play and the refs miss it, which is the 2023 formula for a PAC team to beat an SIAC team..... Good luck to all teams.

While unfortunate for those that can't figure out how to view streamed content, this was a step that people should have seen coming with Bally's bankruptcy. The only thing that I've never liked about the exclusivity of broadcasting the state finals, is that it is forcing private companies or even school broadcasts out. If a school or broadcaster has been showing the entire season up to the state championship game, I'd like to see the IHSAA give those broadcasters an opportunity to do the game, ESPECIALLY if it's an educational broadcast team. Broadcasting a State Final in Lucas Oil Stadium is an experience that no student would forget.

Just speculating but the offense did not play well the first half. I think they wanted to build some confidence and give those guys some more reps together before turning it over to the backups. Unfortunate what happened to evans but tight end room has to step up. It was nice to see Angeli actually run the offense when he did get in and not just hand the ball off.

I remember listening to him, in his Tri-Central era, Saturday mornings on a Kokomo radio station coaches show for area coaches. What a truly inspirational man ! From the moment he spoke, I wanted to put the pads on and play for him at my advanced age. Totally changed my thinking of him from what you read on this forum, thats for sure ! He will be missed !!! it was supposed to be a little satire, but I can understand how that flew right by you. But would it be that shocking to see him bail to the NFL??? I don't think one bit.

If anyone at the IHSAA ever needed a good example of why sectionals should be seeded this would be a great one. Just not right for this to have not been the championship game. A successful group of kids worked their tails off and were robbed of one more week of HS football. Instead a team that started the tournament 3-6, who they beat 42-0, has the privilege of playing one more game only because of a lucky draw. Meanwhile North Posey (10-1) faces off against Paoli (10-1) in what looks to be a slugfest to advance to regional. A true championship game. One could argue Triton takes an advantage in regional because they get to tune up a little in their final. Something has to be done. Seeding just makes the most sense.

Oh I’m definitely not knocking the show. I was raised on it because it was and still is my dad’s favorite show. Well, at least until Don Knotts leaves. He doesn’t acknowledge those later seasons.

There isn’t a situation that comes up in life that isn’t covered by an episode of TAGS.

I was watching Notre Dame/Pitt with my father and remember turning to him and asking why the starters were still playing with the game well in hand. Low and behold, Mitchell Evans goes down with a torn ACL. Thoughts on this? They finally did bring in another quarterback, but left most the other starters in. Wanted to give the new QB reps with the first string? Are reps not good enough with the second string? I'm not trying to tear Freeman down, I like the guy. I just don't understand why they were pouring it on with the starters already up 40 points. I've always believed that you rest your starters as soon as you can and give the backups much needed reps.

FWIW to you HH fans.... there are basically ZERO away stands. Bring your lawn chair.

Our game with Triton Central on Friday was one of the best HS football games I have been to. So well-played, and so well-coached. Starting six sophomores defensively we were worried going against TC's experience and their D1 QB... we battled. Long story short.... we led 17-14 with 1:30mins to go in the game and had Triton 3rd and 15. The game was 0-0 until under 5 mins to go in the 3rd. No regrets, but that game never should have happened in round 2. Hope they can get the sectionals done correctly this go around in the spring. Congrats to Triton, they were really good on Friday, and good luck to them the rest of the way.

Due to the bankruptcy of Bally Sports, future telecasts of IHSAA state championships will be exclusively as a pay-per-view presentation on IHSAAtv.org. 46 states preceded the IHSAA in charging for viewing. Additionally, the IHSAA is one of the few that still allow free-to-watch presentations of the sectional and regional levels. Common questions: Q: Why don't local TV stations air the finals? A: The cost to produce the finals for television using advertising as the revenue source isn't feasible. No TV station or regional sports network came forward to cover these costs. Advertising dollars are escaping conventional media such as television stations, radio and newspapers migrating to the web and social media. Q: Where does the money go? A: The cost to produce a broadcast quality production for sports previously covered by Bally exceeds $200,000. Those costs will need to covered before any distribution to schools or the association. However, the IHSAA provides over $2,000,000 in tournament gate proceeds back to the schools yearly. This year, rights fees paid by broadcasters are also being given back to the schools. The amount given back to the schools exceeds the total operational budget of the IHSAA. Q: How can I watch? A: There are several options. The best option is purchasing a Roku, Firestick or Apple TV device and downloading the free IHSAAtv app from their various app stores. Love the optimism @FinePrint, but I am inclined to disagree with you. 3 things that I have noticed about the Jays over the last 3 weeks compared to Triton. 1. Jays kicking game vs Triton's kicking. Triton takes the field position game, extra point game, and fg game all day. Field position will be the biggest factor in this game and the disadvantage is Judson. 2. Judson's offense vs Triton's offense. Judson has shown inconsistencies in the pass game all season. Understanding they are a run first team, the passing game has been has been throw the deep ball and pray that the receiver catches the ball. Triton has shown way more balance in both the running and passing game all season. 3. Defensively both teams have played lights out the last few weeks, no doubt. Unfortunately, I don't know how a 1 dimensional team can stop balance. Unless something dramatic happens where turnovers are a problem, I feel like this game absolutely goes to Triton. The score maybe different, but I don't think it will be that much different.

I think I would have too, but I bounce back and forth. Their Mr. Football candidate had 167 yards on 25 carries. 3 of his runs were long ones with a 65 yard TD early in the game and a 45 yarder late in the 3rd. He also had a 18 yard first down run. Aside from that Ben Davis really clamped down on him as he had 22 carries for 32 yards. They did try and run the ball and punt after Ben Davis got the pick 6 two times (even mixing in the QB running) and had to punt both times. with far less time than 9 minutes. Judging from the big pass plays they hit on Ben Davis I can see why they tried to sneak one in with 9 minutes to go on 2nd down. The problem was the QB tried to throw short to a WR on Zachary's side and he read it all the way.

The thing that upsets me the most (not gonna get a lot of traction on a forum like this, though). Is that many don't see themselves as TEACHERS 1st. They see themselves as 'hype men' within a program, 1st and foremost. There are numerous programs that we as officials can readily see are there to 'win'...but they also can quickly turn off the testosterone and get back to coaching/teaching. It's a mutual respect thing. I am positive that a particular coach who's kinda "Caveman like" wants to win every time he steps on the gridiron. But I also know that when the rubber hits the road, he (and his staff) have the understanding that what they do and react to, will directly impact the young men and women within their program. This is true of the overwhelming majority of HS coaches that I have encountered. But when I deal with those that see a 'game' as more than that of a 'game'. It truly concerns me as to what is going on within that program. The focus is skewed to something else. Parents/Boosters/Players/Fans all then become the mob which we as officials then have to deal with. And you wonder why we can't recruit new officials? As much as we like to be fans of the players on a Friday night. Remember MOST of these players will be finished with athletics when the last whistle blows in a loss during the playoffs. You can count on 1 hand the number of players that have made it to the NFL in a significant manner within a 5 year period from this state. When its all said and done, what do you want YOUR program remembered for? Success, of course. But sometimes that success comes in the form being able to reach young people and change their lives in a positive way. Victories not withstanding!
