  1. I want to send a THANK YOU to whomever needs to be thanked and say that change is good in this case. I'm guessing the IHSAA has caught wind of this message board with regards to how the communication to officials from the IHSAA regarding their interpretations have been inconsistent over the past 4 weeks. Today I received an e-mail from the IHSAA stating: "As we move to the middle portion of the season please be advised of issues noted by our Observers and I during the first 4 weeks of the season. Previously, these communications have gone through your Association Chair, however, I felt communicating directly with Crew Chiefs would work just as well. Please note the following:" This is a welcomed change and I appreciate the move towards better communication to the men and women in stripes from the IHSAA.

  4. Can we please stop with the nonsensical old saw that the officials “could call holding on every play.?” IT’S NOT TRUE!!! What you can say is that there is a technical violation of blocking rules on every play ... often several. But as has been pointed out on the GID in many different contexts, the black and white of the rulebook is only the starting point when deciding whether to call a foul. I’ve seen many different formulations of the criteria for calling holding, but they all basically come down to a few important rules: There must be a violation of the rules. You have to see all the contact, from engagement to disengagement. If the blocker is simply overpowering the defender, it’s not holding. Should be near the point of attack. Has to have an impact on the play. The defender must make the attempt to get off the block. Should fit into one of several classifications of holding: BEAR HUG WRAP/GRAB & TURN SHOULDER DIP SHIRT STRETCH PULLOVER GRAB OF LEG PULL AND SHOOT If it doesn’t fit into one of these classifications, you should think long and hard before throwing the flag. So, the next time you hear on TV that the officials could call holding on every play, just smile knowingly and say to yourself “I know better.”

  5. You bring up an interesting point here. I think this speaks volumes for the program Adamson has built. Taking a group of kids who lost to the likes of Alexandria as middle schoolers and molding them into a top-5 2A squad (who just took down a ranked 4A team) is extremely impressive. Yes, this Alexandria senior class is more talented than traditional Tiger squads and the Panthers probably have more talented sophomores and juniors but still, what a maturation in just a few short years. Back in my day, Elwood had several undefeated/highly successful middle school squads who beat the likes of Tipton, Anderson, Mississinewa, and Hamilton Heights only to get spanked by those same teams just a few years later. Our stud players seemed to be ditching the gridiron in favor of fat chicks, cigarettes, and juvenile while the Eastbrooks and Tiptons of the world were seemingly always able to retain their core. I really respect programs who are able to maintain that type of roster retention.

  6. Paoli scored to make it 34-30. WW converts a 4th and 2 to seal it. Give some props to Charles Madden taking on 2 behemoths on both sides of the ball. Was hurting at the end but played through it

  9. While SF applauds this guy's efforts to further Christianity - I said it before and will say it again - public schools are not where you want your kids to be exposed to religion. It's an all or nothing game. If you allow Christianity, you have have to allow anything else. Public school is not where you want your kids taught what your belief system is, and it is against the law. The same rules apply to the other religions as well.

  11. NA has lost several players to St. X/Trinity in Louisville. It's been a big problem at NA, and Jeffersonville too for many years. Now, I know that some of this is NA's fault. The lack of coaching consistency and staff have certainly contributed to the problem. For many years the NA administration didn't really fight transfers much......there is only so much you can do in any case. NA has a fairly talented group of sophomores playing varsity right now....the question will be can they hold on to all these guys? Part of this is also on the state of kentucky (lower case k is intentional 😉), who turn a blind eye to this stuff. My understanding is Trinity (the worst offender), has players on the varsity from 5 counties in Ky and 2 from IN. Imagine if NA could have kept these players....all from NA. Duece Finch- went to ST. X, then played RB for Boston College. Nate Combs- went to St. X, then played LB and was a Captain for Army. Jarius Brents- many schools in Louisville area. Was a KY state champion in track. Signed to play DB at Louisville, but was dismissed from team. Rondale Moore- played 2 years at NA, then transferred to Trinity, now at Purdue and a star. Stephon Herron- played at NA as a freshman, transferred to Trinity, now is a Freshman OLB at Stanford. Finch and Combs would have been at NA at the same time. Brents, Moore and Herron would have been teammates as well. It's a sad state of affairs, but there it is.

  13. Looks like this thread is all about opinion, and, of course I have mine: I have ave a proclivity to think outside the box, so my criteria obviously differs. Coaching is more about winning and losing as it also must incorporate elements of planning, not just for the game, but life in general...

  14. Me- Approaching the podium, pulling out a written statement, and leaning into the microphone... "I would like to offer my sincere apologies to my HHC family for igniting the flames of conference realignment talk. I promise you that this wasn't my intention as I honestly thought my comment wouldn't go anywhere. I, too, am disgusted where it went as I also believe this conversation has been overly-discussed. Looking back on it, I see the error of my ways and will try to be mindful of my words before, during, and after I type them before clicking on the "submit reply" button. Nevertheless, I guess I could also say you're welcome. This thread seems to die from Sunday through Thursday anymore and now I know what exactly to post to bring everyone (including those we don't often see take part in the conversation) back in. However, in an effort to not be one of the infamous Gridiron Digest trolls, I will refrain from this practice and just hope meaningful discussions where everyone contributes can continue. Thank you. God bless you. And God bless America."

  17. How did that weak schedule that Knox plays work out for Glenn? Knox played dominate defense and offense put points on board. Nice win by redskins. I liked Glenn's defense but just got wore out in 2nd half. Great effort by those kids.

  19. It's really all about Luke Goode. He gave Snider fits last year. The difference being Snider not able to force any turnovers tonight. Homestead literally had the ball 7 times and scored 7 touchdowns. Kudos to them. Definitely Homesteads year.

  21. Floyd Central 23 Jeffersonville 6 More good defense for Floyd Central. But Wenkers Wright, who came into the game 2nd in the nation in rushing, was really bottled up. Floyd has shown a lot better passing game lately. Tristan Polk has been doing a good job. Their O-line has been inconsistent in run blocking. They’re well coached, but they don’t have a ton of experience yet. I’m not sure if they can move the ball on East TBH. Wenkers can pop for 6 at about anytime, but if he’s running into a wall next week, then there isn’t much he can do. Jeffersonville has some size and athletes. It’s amazing that they can’t get that program going.

  22. Gratz to BNL on a consistent performance- Seymour deserved to lose this game. Uninspired 1st half and too many needless turnovers. BNL will only get better.

  28. Mike Goebel at Mater Dei. People will say yeah but he coaches a P/P school. He wins because he convinces a bunch of 6-0, 185 guys they can play any position on the field. And yes, his role in the wrestling program plays a big part of that.

  32. When I work with new officials or experienced officials who need "help" I also tell them to look the release of the block. For the stuff on the edge especially the release is where the hold actually takes place. It's not an absolute but the more I do this and the more I scrutinize my work the more clearly I see things like this both on video and on the field.

  35. I should add that you shouldn’t make any judgments based on when the flag comes out. There’s a lot of information you need to process before going for the flag and it can take a while. Hearing the guys on TV talk about a “late” flag is a dead giveaway that they don’t know what they’re talking about.

  37. Uh....it was 4th and 11...down 16 points with under 2 minutes to play. He barely got the first down. If he goes out of bounds any sooner, he’s stopped short and the game is over. No lesson to be learned there. BA did right and kept his team in the ballgame. Yes he paid for it but he’s a competitor.

  40. That's true. But when Jennings County and Madison complained about having to play every HHC team in football, my response would've been to suck it up or leave. My next move would be to try and find one or two other schools to replace them to avoid non-conference scheduling difficulties. If that didn't work out then I'd be contacting Conference Indiana to work out a similar scheduling deal with them like they have with the Circle City Conference. Many HHC teams have or have had a history of playing CI teams anyway.

  43. I don't have an issue with Colson dropping football with whats at stake for him. He has top tier NCAA baseball coaches drooling over him wanting him to come play baseball and most colleges have said we will let him play basketball too. Heck, he may never go to college because he may end up being drafted so high it makes sense to go straight to the pros(Minors). He is still a multi-sport athlete. I just dont like seeing kids only play one sport to specialize.

  45. What about Jeff Adamson at Eastbrook? 270-88 in year 31. Plenty of consistency at a smaller public school. Very hard to not feel the talent gaps in a school that size, but every year he has them competing for a Sectional.
