  1. We hear about bad sportsmanship a lot. Here is a post from the Triton Trojans facebook page. This was posted on Saturday after the LaVille game: This afternoon, the Triton Athletic Department received an e-mail from one of the officials from last nights Varsity game against LaVille. The official was commenting on the sportsmanship of the Trojans. Please read the e-mail below: "The Triton Trojans (staff and players) showed exemplary sportsmanship last night as they suffered a tough loss against the LaVille Lancers. It is difficult for a team to hold their composure when the other team holds such a commanding lead, but the Triton Trojans held their heads high for all 4 quarters of play as we had 0 unsportsmanlike fouls to report. A special shout out to #58 Jeremiah Farrell for his positive attitude as he was always trying to be verbally positive with his team even when the loss was imminent. He tried to set the tone of playing for pride, and we officials saw his positive attitude and wanted to make sure his gestures did not go unnoticed. High Schools need these types of athletes that show such such pride in their achievements, and their failures." Thank you to Coach Younis, staff, players, and especially Jeremiah for this outstanding display of sportsmanship! #TrojanPride

  11. There is no foul in HS for breaking the huddle with 12. That's an NCAA (and possibly NFL) rule. The NFHS rule says that a replaced player must leave within 3 seconds of the substitute entering. The player becomes a substitute when he communicates with any player or gets into formation. If the 12th player enters the huddle just before they break and the replaced player leaves as part of that it's not a foul. The same applies to no huddle teams. If they are lingering for more than 3 seconds with 12 players the official could flag illegal substitution. Depending on how the different groups are lingering it may be tricky to get the count, but it should be easier with the offense. There is a separate requirement for all subs to get inside the 9-yard marks (usually marked by the top of the numbers) before the snap. It's mostly to prevent hide-out plays so most crews don't get that technical if the sub is matched up or obvious to the defense. Based on your description if there are more than 11 players lingering between the backs and receivers for more than 3 seconds they are gaining an advantage as you describe. It should be flagged. Depending on what else is happening there is no guarantee the officials are counting at that point. There are several other things they have to do between plays. I suggest pointing it out to the official on your sideline so he is at least more alert to it.

  13. My gut says Pioneeer. But Coach Howtrawser has a system building. This is a program defining game for LaVille. What LaVille has done in the last 6 years or so in athletics has been impressive. A lot of positives taking place there beside just football.

  14. Charlie Spegal is 11 yards away from breaking Sammy Mireles' state rushing record of 8,110 yards, and so he's likely to break it Friday night vs. Yorktown. Mireles is going to be in attendance to honor Charlie during the game. Really first-class for him to be there and be a part of this occasion. They're the only two backs in IHSAA football history to rush for more than 8,000 yards.

  15. I appreciate that. While the overall reason we played the game because we literally couldn't find anyone else in four states that was a good fit to play a game with besides EMD, there were obviously other factors we considered. in spite the thrashing we took, the kids loved the experience including the traveling. I'd consider something like this every other year or so. Next year we have a one year contract with Mishawaka Marian Week 2 at our place. It's official but we haven't put it out there... until now!

  17. couldn't agree more!!! Warsaw will continue to be a tough out. GREAT KICKER, puts opposing teams 80 yards to paydirt each and every time. Warsaw will make you have to capitalize on each of your offensive possessions because of their triple option scheme eats the clock and ball. So you better get points every time you have the ball because it might be only 4 or 5 total possessions in a game. Winning 21-7 for Warsaw is like a 49-0 blowout for uptempo spread teams.

  20. Believe it or not, I’m tipping my cap to the Whiting Oilers. They’ve long been the most successful of the smaller “urban” schools in NW Indiana, but never got as far as they would have liked in the tourney. So, they are trying to upgrade their non-conference schedule. They traveled all the way to Evansville Saturday to play Mater Dei. They got waxed 52-16, but now those kids have a taste of what it is like on the next level. It will help them in the long run, and kudos to the program for being willing to take on such a formidable challenge.

  21. First, there is no foul called impeding a receiver. I think I know what you are asking though. Before the ball is thrown the defender may block an eligible receiver who is still a potential blocker as much as he wants. He can't illegally block him (i.e. hold, block in the back, blind side block), but he can block him. There is no 5-yard contact rule like the NFL. Once the receiver passes him or is running away from him (i.e. think crossing route) then he can no longer block him. Then it is illegal use of hands and the signal is the same as holding. Once the pass is in the air toward his direction the contact must have stopped or it turns into pass interference.

  27. The subject of unconscious bias on the part of sports officials is a fair one, and numerous studies have shown that it exists under certain circumstances. It’s part of the home field advantage. Because it’s unconscious, it’s difficult to find a way to overcome it, although this study suggests that it diminishes with the experience of the officials involved. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-referees-decision/referees-influenced-by-fans-crowd-size-study-idUSN0327558320070403

  30. I didn't see what happened and don't care to comment on it. As @JustRules said, a replaced player has 3 seconds to begin to leave the field. The foul is illegal substitution. The situation you describe I've seen happen many times, if the replaced player begins to leave in a timely manner (no I don't do a count, I'm not going to split hairs was it 2.8 seconds or was it 3.4), we let it go.

  33. New Pal vs a MIC schedule is irrelevant. They have proven that playing 1 game against a perennial power is not a problem. Cathedral’s schedule is by necessity because of being independent. It plays in their favor come tournament time barring excessive injuries as they will be battle tested. A Valpo/Dwenger showdown seems imminent. I’m not ready to pick a winner yet. 5A is going to be fun!

  36. The only change is 87 is normally our starting RB but this year 87 is being worn by a WR. 81 and 3 are still the other WR’s per usual and 2 is our QB. I love the tradition as well. Mike Tolle said back in I believe ‘93 that Dwengers coach said to him “I already know 2 is your QB, 87 is your stud RB and 81 is your stud WR.” He was correct.

  40. Alex at Frankton--Alex barely got by Wes-Del in the opener and then lost to Wabash. Frankton has talent but can't seem to find it all on the same night. Alex is getting some votes in the 2A polls. John Harrell as Frankton winning this one but he has been known to be wrong. Alex wins this one in a close game. Blackford at Oak Hill--OH is trying to figure things out. I thought Blackford would be 2-0 this week but they opened against a very good Monroe Central team. Harrel has OH winning this game by scoring more points in one game than they have all season thus far. In the end Blackford starts CIC play 1-0. Madison Grant at Eastbrook--MG has made a lot of improvements and was able to keep a good Tipton team at bay. Eastbrook has had the toughest opening 2 games that they have every had and lost both to 4A schools. Eastbrook is still ranked #10 in the IFCA poll but has dropped out of this week's AP poll. Eastbrook though gets things going despite MG's improvements and wins. Eastbrook wins by a TD. Elwood at Mississinewa--Mississinewa moved up to #4 in the IFCA poll and #5 in the AP poll. Mississinewa is just too big up front for Elwood. The Campbell brothers get the 4th quarter off this week along with the rest of the starters as they begin prepping for Eastbrook next week. Elwood may score but won't be until the Freshman come in for Mississinewa. Mississinewa wins this one by as much as they want to.

  42. Yes sir, you being around the block, you should surely know that Elder has zero parking. Coming from a Elder gentleman at last years game told me, if you are not there 1.5 to 2 hours early, you will be walking two miles to the stadium. 10,000 seat capacity and zero parking, not a hard equation to figure out. Not sure what the difference is if I meet you alone or with other dads. I and we want nothing more than to put the face with the name of the gentleman who feels the need to constantly put our boys down. Even calling a few out by name. That way when our boys continue to prove that they are a good team, who is only going to get better, they know who truly has supported them and who has doubted them. So take my advice and leave straight from the Blend, because I'd hate for you to have to walk all that way.
