  1. May be an unpopular opinion - but I for one am fine with the sectional classifications. I think it is beyond awesome this game is taking place as a semi-state match-up rather than a first or second round sectional game.

  7. Barring a complete overhaul of tournament structure….we will never be treated to this rivalry game in a bigger moment/atmosphere. A game of ultimate bragging rights. A semi state game actually played under the lights on Friday. Playing in November….It really doesn’t get much bigger than this for this rivalry.

  10. CYO uses a formula below based on numerous factors. They total up the points and put teams in classes based on the score. A team can request to move up to a larger division. I would like to see data from the teams previous seasons to assist in putting them in the right division. There is a CYO coaches meeting at the Cadet level to allow coaches to assist in making sure the teams are in the right division. Unfortunately, some coaches are not honest about their teams and remain in the lower divisions. Most do the right thing. Criteria used for Pairing Teams into the A, AA and AAA Leagues A. Each player on a roster is worth 1 point. B. Each upperclassman on the roster is worth 2 points. For the 56 league, 6th graders and for the Cadet league, 8th graders. C. Each 2 striper on the roster is worth 3 points. D. Each 3 striper on the roster is worth 2 points. E. Each impact player on the roster is worth 1 point. An impact player is a player that is within 3 pounds of the maximum weight for a non-striper and a 2 striper. F. The size of the school is worth 0 to 10 points. (10 points for the biggest schools — above 500 students, 5 points for the mid-range schools — 350 to 500 students and 0 points for the smallest schools — under 350 students).

  14. The pirate program has been on the rise n getting out of their regional was the "hump" they needed to get over..they will have the speed n size advantage from looking at their matchup with valpo..besides the mic..has there ever been two different schools from the same conference go back to back state titles in a class.? Crazy..

  16. Snider packed 9 in the box against Mishawaka daring them to throw the ball and they hurt Snider passing the ball. Snider obviously made the decision that they weren’t going to let Mishawaka run the ball at will and kill the clock. It worked as Snider controlled time of possession and drove the ball between the 20’s, they just didn’t finish in the red zone. Snider’s pass defense was actually pretty good this year. As for the Merrillville D-1’ers, lots of team speed, not a great passing QB, and no beast running back bodes well for the Panthers. Defensively, Merrillville has good linemen, decent linebackers, and fast but leaky secondary. I think the magic number for Snider is 21 points, anything more than that and they win, less than that and it’s anyone’s game.

  19. Seeing Cathedral play Brownsburg, Center Grove, and Ben Davis this year, Brownsburg in my opinion was the best of the 3. They were very balanced both on the ground and through the air. This version of Center Grove isn't as good as some previous teams in my opinion but still good enough to win the next two weeks. Honestly expected more out of BD. Their defensive line was very good and gave Cathedral all sorts of problems but I wasn't wowed with their speed and offensive play-calling.

  20. Plot twist: Parkhurst actually hates Merrillville and his goal is to make the entire state also hate them.

  21. Haha. Speaking of him, he proclaimed last week on the Region Board that everyone in the state, including The Indy Star, was calling the Merillville vs. Valpo game the 5A State Title.

  22. He and his brother were both tall kids ... even in the youth program. Both were a joy to have on a team as players, but also special kids too. I kind of figured he'd follow his brother as a TE ... David was a beast at TE for LCC ... but Albert looks like he shines a lot more on the defensive side of the ball; which is just where I remember him as a youth player.

  23. Possible. I just can’t get that Facebook hype man out of my mind which is probably unfair to the kids, lol. When he spoke about a guaranteed state title a couple of years back and they proceeded to get curb stomped by Chatard, I clocked out. Come to think of it, I have a lot of biases towards certain teams and coaches, most probably unfair, lol.

  24. Absolutely as well as our game. I always make a point to go and shake the hand of players I felt stood out. Once i got done shaking the coaches hands, I found him as fast as I could. Luckily I just had to look up and find the tallest player on the field. He does an excellent job of getting hands on and creating separation. A very very great player. I have a lot of respect for the young man.

  26. I've always felt, no different than last year, that Snider had the best team in 5A. They just seem to have a set back now and then. I also said a few weeks ago that Merrillville is flying under the radar. NO ONE was bringing them up in the 5A title discussion. I think they are a dangerous team. I'm also wondering if 5A south might be better than everyone is giving them credit four. I agree with you, I think any of the four remaining can win it. Valpo got their first since the 70's last year. Maybe this is the year of the Pirate.

  27. I mean, it worked. Mishawaka's run game was utterly smothered. Snider was determined that if the Cavemen scored, it wasn't going to be by burning 10 minutes off the clock. Snider had plenty of chances to score touchdowns that game, but came up short twice on 1st and goal within the five. Kudos to Mishawaka's defense for locking down.

  29. Knox is 0-0 against Sagarin top 64. Chatard is 7-0. Knox may think they'll dictate things and that "Chatard hasn't seen anyone like us" yet. But they have. Unless Knox thinks they're better than Cathedral, Cincinnati Elder, etc. Knox is used to playing with a lead against weaker teams. Little different this week. Game won't be close. Knox has literally played nobody. They are 0-0 against Sagarin top 64. Chatard is #13 and 7-0 against that list.

  30. Here's the link from Region Sports. Go to the 2:57 mark. I slowed down the speed and took the attached screenshot. #4 for Merrillville was already in position to make a playon the ball just as the Valpo WR caught the ball. It's hard to tell fromt the angle if the Pirate defender only hit the hands/arm/ball or the helmet of the WR as well. Would you still consider it a foul if he didn't hit the WR's helmet? https://www.ihsaatv.org/regionsports/?B=744109

  34. Gotta be honest, as someone who pays a lot of attention to Sags and CalPreps, I’m totally down with the transitive value being utilized to predict outcomes. You just need a lot of games (more inputs) played before it begins to become predictive…not a few or single game. In the end, I’ll trust the transitive value used en gros over most alternative. With that, I’m still very uncomfortable with Sags this year…even at this late stage of the season. Maybe just confirmation bias on my part but I really think the lack of incorporating out of state games in Sagarin seems to be more problematic than most any prior year I can recall.

  37. It didn’t happen but would have been cool, in 1988 & 1989 Tri-West and Western Boone almost met in State Finals. The school districts border each other and many friends & family would have been divided on that day. It didn’t happen TW lost to South Spencer in the ultimate mud bowl in 1988. Webo lost to FW Luers in 1989. What could have been didn’t happen.

  45. Let me repeat there. was. no. transitive. property. used. Transitive Property = USA beat Mexico and Mexico beat Canada so by transitive property USA beat Canada. Nowhere in there has Westfield played anyone that beat Crown Point or Penn. It is NOT transitive property. I've watched Penn play Cathedral (in person) and I have watched 2 Crown Point games (on film). I have seen multiple (4 to be exact 2 on film 2 in person) Westfield games. If you want more in depth I can give it. I stand 100% by what I stated. It won't be a blow out more of a 28-14, 35-20 type of game with Westfield winning. If I am wrong I will eat crow. For Pete's sake can the "transitive property" be put to rest as it wasn't even used.

  47. Two years ago there was a situation with two key players for NW who were suspended for the opening Sectional game vs Northridge due to an incident. This incident happened the day before the game, but was brought to the staff the day of the game. So to answer your question, yes, I’m sure NW would’ve acted in similar fashion. As for the Northridge incident, it was ultimately the school’s choice to suspend the kids for a game I believe. If it happened off school property and during the summer, couldn’t they let it slide? Every situation is unique, but sooner or later there has to be a timeframe where “the past is the past”. It may be subjective and not clear-cut, I understand that. The caption and picture seem obvious, but how is someone going to prove he was high? There would need to be a video showing the action of smoking IMO or do a drug test.
