  1. I'll bite. I was the HC at said program for 5 years. I cannot tell you the number of times I had discussions with kids about playing, they'd show up, they'd quit in the summer. Or the number of times I heard the words drop the program. Or the number of times a kid would quit after Week 1. We lost 2 starters after the scrimmage one year because they wanted to hunt more. You have no idea how challenging it is to get that thing off the ground. We took our fair share of lumps, and I'm not Vince Lombardi. But I don't know of anytime that a respectable coach has ever blamed someone else of running up the score. It's my job to stop you. Even when we had 15 kids for a season I never thought anyone ran it up. So no, it is actually acceptable to schedule games then have to drop because of circumstances outside your control. Until you've walked in the man's shoes, we shouldn't speak for what he should or should not do.

  2. On the 2nd carry of the game, Charlie Spegal is now the ALL-TIME leading rusher in the state of Indiana. Congrats to an amazing player and good luck the rest of the year... 10k soon.

  3. Unbelievable effort. I was so wrong about my prediction but I'm completely ok with that. I think Pickerington Central might be a bit overrated but their defense is one of the best I've ever seen. This was a great momentum-builder going into conference play next week.

  4. Yea. We take it to the town square after the game like real men! 🤣🤣. But maybe it because nobody wants smacked over the head with a milk jug full of rocks

  5. Kankakee Valley and Rensselaer Central play for the Cracker Barrell. I've been on staff in some capacity from day 1 of Meeks Era and on paid staff since 2003 Been fortunate to be part of 16 Barrel wins to 5 losses. Man how time flies.

  6. New Palestine & Mt. Vernon play for the Boundary Rail, a piece of the old interurban track that ran along U.S. 40, along the rough boundary between the two school districts (the actual township line is a couple few hundred feet north of U.S. 40). That trophy came about because of the GID. Tim Adams was MV's DC at the time, former MV player Josh Short had the rail, restored it and donated it, and I was the sports editor of the local newspaper and helped publicize it. Between us, the idea came about and some new traditions have developed (such as the winning team painting the rail in school colors when it changes hands ... now that both teams have turf, they'll have to be a bit more careful). Next week will be the 15th meeting for the Rail. Not long after, Eastern Hancock and Knightstown developed the Plow Share & Anvil Trophy for their rivalry.

  7. Slick John here providing some spreads for entertainment purposes only. Memorial(-13.5) @ Goshen: If Memorial's staff can keep their players engaged, 2 of their toughest 3 games may already be behind them. 6-3 for Memorial is not out of the realm of possibility. Goshen hung tougher than I expected last week vs. Central. Wawasee @ Northridge (-21.5) : Northridge has put up some impressive point totals the last couple weeks regardless of playing teams with a combined record 0-4. Wawasee has not played such opponents. The battle of SR 13 will be decided before the sun goes down in Middlebury. NorthWood @ Concord (-1.5) : Maybe on their way past the dump, NorthWood will throw those red jerseys away. Concord is not as talented as Chatard, and a good weed of practice for NorthWood gives them an edge. Concord gets a point for being at home, where NorthWood hasn't won since 1997. #1 song on September 5 1997: Notorious BIG feat. Puff Daddy and Mase- Mo' Money Mo' Problems....Mo' Jersey's/Mo' Helmets Mo' Problems??? Plymouth @ Warsaw (-9.5) : Impressive win for Warsaw last week. I am not too familiar with Michigan City besides their recent performances in the 5A tournament, so the strength of that win will identify it self in later weeks, but right now it has got to be the most impressive win for anyone in the league. I think this game is definitely the highest scoring of the night- if not season in league play. Bonus Odds! Odds to win at least share of NLC Varsity Football Championship Warsaw (3:2)- explanation above. Concord (3:1)- current league leader. More to find out tonight NorthWood (3:1)- Only loss is agaisnt a state contender Northridge (3:1)- Two solid wins Plymouth (3:1)- if they win tonight, odds will change drastically Memorial (12:1)- uphill battle at this point, starting off at last place in the league for the 15th consecutive (but final!!!) season Wawasee/Goshen (250:1)- combo pick!!! If you pick one of these, you get two for the price of one!!!

  8. I’m also a Packer fan. The Bears were also a victim of their own hype. And, yes, although the Packers do have a great defense, but Aaron and the boys need to step on the gas if they don’t want an 8-8 season. Thing of beauty...

  9. https://duboiscountyherald.com/b/jasper-and-southridge-end-of-a-rivalry I've posted this in another thread, but Southridge and Jasper have had the battle for the Golden Goalposts for many years. Although Jasper dominated the series (40-8), Southridge took the last installment of the matchup. Huntingburg and Jasper first played in 1954, but the first Goal Post game was in 1958 when The Dubois County Herald Newspaper sponsored the trophy. The trophy symbolizes the Gridiron Rivalry between the two schools separated by less than 10 miles of each other. The record may not say so, but there have been some VERY good football games in this series. Due to Jasper joining the SIAC in 2020, there will no longer an opening in their schedule for this game to continue in the years to come.

  11. That was Triton. I am one of the coaches and my brother and I who both played under Coach Younis built it during the spring. It's not as nice as some of the manufactured ones, but it gets the job done while doing stuff on a budget.

  12. I think maybe my earlier comments about SR are getting confused by some. I never mentioned Alabama, I never said SR didn't play a tough schedule. I was originally questioning why SR didn't move into the LED and Tecumseh come into the SED. That seemed logical to me. Also, and I am a realist here.......SR will win the SED for years and years and years, and that's fine. All I was saying was that I felt SR would get more out of playing teams such as MV, and Prin., every year because they have better potential to improve(due to enrollment and numbers), on their schedule. It is what it is. Play where you want and who you want. But SR winning the LED would be an eye opener, SR winning the SED is a forgone conclusion. IMO

  13. Yep, GS definitely got rid of some annual blowouts. For the most I have been against the SIAC adding 2 more schools and playing 2 divisions, but to have some football scheduling flexibility it might nice. The downside (and I'm not saying this will happen to GS), is that it does get challenging finding non-conf opponents at times.

  14. Goshen & Wawasee USED to play for the Traveling Chief...they don't anymore because #politics. Side rant: A general rule of thumb....if your trophy looks like something that you could be awarded at Noon Kiwanis/Rotary Club, or strongly resembles a bowling trophy....you need to re-evaluate. Any decent traveling trophy should be so big it has to be carried by at least two people and made of wood or metal😁 Although the Harvest Helmet is a cool trophy....

  17. Whiting HS and Clark HS are bitter rivals are play in a game called the Battle of 119th St, the street the two schools sit on literally a half mile apart. The rivalry entered its 86th year this year making it the second longest continuous rivalry in the state. Whiting has won the last 8 games and lead the all time series by a couple of games. Below is a picture of the trophy a student at Whiting created. The boundary for the two schools go north and south between our two communities and every year we have a BBQ a couple of days before the game. Pretty neat affair. Another trophy game I'm starting is between Whiting and Hanover Central. This summer we had a kid who needed a 2X helmet but we ran out so I borrowed one from HC whose head coach is a friend of mine. I told him I'm not giving back his helmet unless he beats us. 😆

  20. More like a poor-to-mediocre offense in the Bears. IIRC correctly the announcers said that Trubinsky only played a handful of downs during the pre-season games. I'm sorry, but unless your QB pedigree is similar to the likes of Brady, Brees, and Rodgers you need as many snaps in a game-like situation as you can get, especially for a 3rd year player like Trubinsky.

  21. Monroe Central and Wes-Del play for the Harvest Helmet. At one point we were the only 2 schools in the conference to have a football team before expansion. The helmet celebrates the agricultural base of both communities. It started around 2010 (MC's first football season). The helmet is 2 sided with both schools represented.

  23. So I was just looking at the numbers... Gibson Southerns 2020 schedule will have an average enrollment of 1064 students across the 9 game regular season (didn’t include central scrimmage because...its a scrimmage lol) Gibson Southerns 2019 schedule has an average of enrollment of 694 students across 9 games. If you were to remove Southport that average is 499 students over the other 8 games Quite the challenge ahead that’s for sure, but I love this schedule. Essentially going from a 2A schedule to a 4A schedule and making it where the team has to play their best football 9 weeks in a row. No days off

  30. After two weeks are we really putting much stock in the SAG ratings? I mean, I love the Raiders as much as anyone, but 24th in the state? Let's get real.... Also, SR has had plenty of post season success. I think they will be just fine playing small school and scheduling 4 others. HH and GS will be two of the 4.

  33. I had to write an apology letter to Bloomington South after sectionals for what the student section did/said during one of the basketball games. My megaphone got taken from me the 3rd game of the football season. I loved getting out school on friday’s packing 6-8 deep in 2-3 different cars and rolling into other school parking lots at like 4:30 or earlier and watching all the other schools look at us like who the F are these guys 😂😂. Tailgates here B****** LOL

  37. OK, way back in my day, in Basketball season WTTV 4 used to have the Tuesday night game of the week on TV. I think I was a junior and we played at Shelbyville. Not sure if we won or not, but our BS chant was clearly audible on the TV. One of my prouder moments in high school.

  38. The student section has been embarrassing to me for almost a decade now. We literally have one of the quietest in the state and opposing student sections that are 1/10th the size of ours manage to be louder than ours. Makes sense that Newell is the culprit and that really disappoints me. Glad to know the students don't actually suck but are merely restricted. It's just hard for me to sit there with a quiet student section knowing how ridiculously loud and over-the-top we were back when I was a student there in the mid-2000s. There were a few times we even got in trouble for taking things a wee bit too far. Lol. @Olympian06 can confirm this as well.

  39. Not sure what it's like now, but when I was involved, Seymour's may have been one of the worst. I know they both (AD and assistant AD) got tired of listening to me complain about their stupid restrictions on students.
