  1. To be fair, I go the 500 every year, and I almost die every year

  2. You and I agree on some of your points and disagree on others in regards to Doyel. A few years back, he left sports to talk about a Civil War memorial being moved out of Garfield Park. The memorial was for Confederate dead that lost their lives while in a Union prison camp here in Indy. I am not about arguing for or against the removal. But Doyel jumped in with his policial views and made statements (to include about his own family ancestory) that was flat out generalizing and stereotyping people on one one side of the spectrum that were misguided and in some cases historically incorrect. I know what a columnist is....and I also know that one should attempt to balance their personal views and be largely accurate when they make statements in support of their positions. I have seem him miss that boat time and time again on social media, and he doesn't care....he has a view and others be damned if they don't agree. He's caustic and will argue to win no matter the facts or the costs. I will never buy an edition of the IndyStar while he's employed.

  4. I was going to say if there ever was a transfer they should allow, this would be the one. It always smells a little vindictive when ADs don't sign off on these.

  5. The only facts that really matter are 1. that an adult was inappropriately texting an underage person in a sexually suggestive way. 2. The school fired this person (thus admitting to the situation). 3. The school administration said “hold my beer” and doubled down on the emotional abuse toward the family by denying the transfer. There is no explanation for them not doing the decent thing and allowing the kid to go. Do they fear this kid in a Greenwood uniform? Will it cause irreparable harm to the IC season by not having this kid on the team? FFS, be a decent human being and let the family make a clean break.

  6. I don’t think coaches are worrying about how a score will impact their Sagarin number. But with that said it was explained to me that beating a team by too much will actually hurt your Sagarin number because the team you beat will drop by a lot and thus weaken your SOS. So the goal is to beat the spread by not by too much if you want to worry about your rating.

  7. Do you think it’s partially due to the fact the Indy Star has a columnist reporting the story and not somebody there to actually report all the facts? Do you really think Doyel cares what Indian Creek has to say? Was it really going to change his mind?

  8. I own a copy of Mr. Neddenriep's book on historic Indiana high school gyms. It's a great book.

  9. There's still a code of ethics in Journalism that need to be followed (or at least there used to be and now a reason why print media sucks) and I'm not so sure that's a concern of Doyel or Gannett (perhaps why they're tanking). There's a a lot of dumb people out there who believe everything they read (I've been guilty a time or two especially in my younger years) and guys like Doyel have made a great living off these types of people.

  10. Kyle Neddenriep is one of the best people in sports media. He's one of the best writers they have there in any department. He has tremendous integrity.

  11. If the Star had any integrity it might be suicide.

  12. Yeah, I don't trust any of them. "vetted by someone above him" but that person still has an agenda, as well. They all do. Maybe we don't see it in this exact article, but Doyel and others can kick rocks. Then he came after Dungy. He's a bum.

  13. Wouldn't you expect a writer for a major city newspaper to check his sources? If not, well, your standards are different than mine. Doyel writes columns and so much of his work is based on his opinion...and he is paid to "stir things up". If you don't already, follow him on Twitter/X. I think you will see with many of his positions, he does NOT allow facts to stand in his way.

  14. My 7 main conclusions with this thread..... Let the kid transfer for his senior season and move on. Do the right thing IHSAA! The title of this thread is one of the best in quite some time. Well done Muda! Grover only made the comment about Lea Thompson given his marching band resume. Coach Nickerson failed Salvucci...no sugar coating that fact. Doyel is still a putz! Nickerson's play call one of the worst in history that directly led to Ampipe's loss at Walnut Heights. Steph called him out for it and it cost him his senior season. I do have to give him some credit for the 6-2 stack defense. Brian should have taken the scholly to USC. Married student housing buddy!!

  15. Honestly, I could care less if the kid was kicked off the team or not. He doesn't want to be at a school or football program where some pedophile was send messages to his little sister. I don't see why anyone couldn't understand that. Shame on IC for not allowing the transfer and shame on the IHSAA for not siding with the student.

  16. IHSAAtv, the Champions Network of the IHSAA, has begun identifying and remastering historically significant State Final games from the past. When completed, those games will be found initially on our Facebook page and later archived on IHSAAtv.org. Follow us at https://www.facebook.com/ihsaatv. Currently we have restored only basketball, but future plans include many football games and a few other select sporting contests. Which games would you like restored?

  17. I thought I’d heard that awhile back and wasn’t sure if it was an exaggeration or not. Someone had said they’re in North district despite being able to see South from their house.

  19. Because of topography, much of the development around Bloomington over the years have been to the southeast, south, and southwest, and somewhat to the west. Development to the east has almost stopped once you get a short ways past SR 446 (Knightridge Road), because of the Lake Monroe watershed that begins in that area and zoning laws do not allow much density at all past there. The terrain to the north is such that there is also low-density zoning laws in those areas with it being extremely hilly and flood prone. It wasn't but a few years back, maybe 10 years or so, and with some very liberal people on the school board, it was decided that there was an imbalance between North and South over socio-economic issues with students from more affluent neighborhoods mainly going to South and North having a student population with a high percentage of students from less affluent homes. With most of the development going in the direction of South H.S., they decided to change the school districting to include some very affluent neighborhoods that were actually much, much closer to South. Hyde Park which has very expensive homes was one of those areas that were now included in the North district. That kind of explains why things are kind of out of whack when it comes to where the school districts start and end. It's kind of like you have fingers pointing down toward South H.S. with the students within those fingers going to North. I used to joke that at some point South's campus would be in North's school district, and it's really not that far off for some areas.

  20. yes. most folks live closer to south than north i believe north was built there because the land was donated...

  21. No corporation administrator would talk to any reporter. The first thing an administrator would be told by a competent attorney is "do not make any public comments." It isn't rocket science. It has nothing to do with Doyle. The key facts in this case are undisputed: (1) assistant coach texts 15 year student; (2) parents get restraining order; (3) player transfers and wanted to play football his senior season; (4) Indian Creek refused to release player; and (5) IHSAA and CRP inexplicably side with school and screw student. It doesn't matter if Neddenriep wrote the article or Doyle. The point of the article that that once again the IHSAA chooses school over student.

  22. I know the difference between a columnist and news writer. Most columnists, well the good ones at least, will write opinionated pieces that have been researched to a degree to which an educated opinion can be formed. Not saying this isn't true for this particular piece, but Doyel is notorious for writing hit pieces and making over-sensationalized comments for the simple sake of gaslighting and virtue-signaling, despite not knowing what the hell he's talking about.
    1 point
  23. There is, but opinion writing is not the same as news writing. He's very definitely a columnist. Someone like Neddenriep occasionally expresses an opinion (mostly on social media) but most generally writes straight news or feature stuff (and does it very well).

  26. I don't disagree with you on Doyel but only to an extent. He's paid as a columnist and not a journalist. He's paid to get reactions from people and to express his opinions. His facts, however, have to be sound. That's especially in a case like this one. Anything presented as fact has been vetted by someone above him, I'm sure. If it's not, that's a problem for him and for Gannett. I find Doyel to be an excellent writer when it comes to features. His column writing is grating. He goes back and says the same thing over and over again. He inserts "I" and "me" into his columns too much. I've never written for the outlets that he has, but I did have a cup of coffee at the IU School of Journalism (it was my minor). I know that was always frowned upon. But hey...it's 2023. Gregg cares deeply for what he writes about. I think that sometimes makes him go overboard.

  27. “Emotionally charged journalism” is what I like to call it. He’s right on this one (assuming the facts of the case are accurate) but loses credibility and legitimacy based on some of his previous “stories.” ”Thousands will die if we have fans at the Indianapolis 500 or play college football this fall.” Enough said.

  30. Why can't anyone answer the ELEPHANT in the room ...if all this went down the way the article portrays (smashed mailbox, inappropriate texts, clashing with Head Coach, etc...) - WHY ON EARTH WOULD IC NOT sign off on the transfer and just be done with the whole situation??? It makes absolutely no sense ...something doesn't add up.

  31. Why the drop in enrollment over the past few years? Are Dwenger families saving money and sending their kids to Carroll? Carroll has good academics and athletics, one of the better public schools in the state.

  32. #1 seems like the most obvious thing ever! Seriously, I wonder what IC's motivation would be for not signing off on the transfer?? Seems extremely petty from an outsiders perspective #6 - Always thought this was the most under-rated part of the movie. As a Coach, you got to own up to the fact you totally blew it. His reaction and facial expression after he sent the play call in tells the story. Coach totally blew the end of the game and blamed the kids for it.

  33. Well, exactly who does the IHSAA ultimately represent, it's member schools or the student-athlete? It's pretty clear it is the former, after all they are the ones who pay the IHSAA for membership and offer up their facilities for tournament games where the IHSAA gets a cut. Thank you. It just kind of rolls off the tongue.............

  35. Attica @ Parke Heritage Fountain Central @ Covington Seeger @ Riverton Parke North Vermilion @ South Vermilion Let's go all road teams this week. The Ramblers are the real stretch here, but I can see FC & Seeger winning easily. NV would probably be an upset, but not a big one.

  36. East. JC looks improved a little bit. Still room to grow. Fern Creek. Jeffersonville is pretty bad right now and Creek usually has a decent team. BNL. New Albany will make it tough for some reason. BNL will pull it out in the end. Floyd Central. I’m going with my gut here. With the homefield factor and revenge factor going, I think FC will win a close one.

  38. This is the best post I’ve read on here about the problems at Dwenger. Everyone’s afraid to say it. There were a handful of wise people that knew this immediately (even in 2018) and since then we’ve seen the talent in 2019 and 20 and even in 21 ( didn’t have the line to make a deep run)get completely wasted. Should have at the very least been to State in 19 and 20 and had the talent to win both years (would’ve been a tall order against New Pal and Cathedral but the kids deserved a shot) Between 2018 and 2021 they produced 3 Division 1 linemen and another (arguably the best behind Joe T)plays locally. They have also sent 5 other players to D1, have had 2 player of the year players. 18 All State Players. One of the most prolific passers in SAC history arguably their best MLB in history and Didn’t use ant least 5 other kids on offense and played D only which held them back from college offers. Even last year they wasted a couple kids ability as well. Dwenger is more than capable of winning 5A. This 4A excuse to me is sickening. The old guard never would have backed down from the 5A challenge. They would have seen it as an opportunity. That’s all I have. I need a Tylenol.

  39. I think east gets this one. CE Fern Creek is too athletic for Jeff. Fern Creek BNL wins in close game FC wins in high scoring game. Toughest pick of week FC 61-Seymour 60

  40. Good post. I agree with you. Snider, Carroll, Homestead, Dwenger, North Side, Warsaw, East Noble, and let’s say Penn. This would be football only. It would be a more competitive conference for sure, the 78-6 blowouts would be out the door. These are all 4A, 5A, and 6A teams

  41. Yes, and there have been several others. No big deal. Good kids and the transfers were not contested even though one was in the middle of the season. As long as it includes the nude scene with Leah Thompson you can count me in.

  43. Yes https://www.almanacsports.com/football/history.php?team=IND_ARL Arlington's best season ever was 1999 in 5A Regionals they led Ben Davis 15-13 until Ben David kicked a last second long field goal to win the game 16-15. Ben Davis went on to beat Bloomington South 38-0 in Semi-State and Penn 27-3 in the State Finals.

  44. I don't know who's right and who's wrong with this particular case. But it seems Doyel always has an agenda....and perhaps laziness is there as well, but I am leaning its more of an agenda. I dropped the IndyStar because of their agenda and specifically the actions and behavior of Doyel on social media. He makes his biases very apparent. Its a shame, as I think Kyle Ned is a gem for the Star. I value following him on social media very much. Doyel, not so much.

  45. I have been quiet this year thus far. Not really a lot of fun up until now. Seems the conference is pretty down besides two teams. Attica @ (PH) - Yikes (FC) @ Covington - I had higher hops for the Trojans this season, but after last week's beatdown I am worried. FC is coming off a solid win, I take them in this game. Their QB is pretty impressive. (Seeger) @ RP - Word on the street at the Mecca Tavern is the RP boys are hurtin. Seeger will out physical them, and it won't be close. NV vs (SV) - This will be the conference decider. For the simple fact that it's at home, I'm giving the edge to SV. I think NV will be more prepared and better coached, but fall a little short due to athleticism/talent.

  46. Arlington High School closed in 2018 (along with Broad Ripple and Northwest). The IPS school board decided Arlington would reopen as Arlington Middle School for the 2018-2019 school year. So Arlington Middle School field was actually a High School field that is now known as Arlington Middle School Field. Both Cathedral and Chatard used it as their homefield in the early 90's as well as Broad Ripple's football field. The field is natural grass and since Cathedral got an agreement from Arlington to use it Cathedral has paid for the Natural Grass to be resurfaced and cared for. Yes with excessive rain (hence the photo up above) it does get muddy, but it is actually in better condition than it ever was while Arlington High School was still operating.

  47. Give Tedford credit. He is a qb whisperer. Found what Purdue could not defend and dug in the dagger. And Harrell looked like the young apprentice of offense in comparison being schooled by an old pro.

  48. Week 4... Attica @ Parke Heritage - Woolfs got owned by the boys from Clinton. The Ramblers are still figuring things out under their new coach, but they have the scheme to make PH nervous. If they can limit their mistakes, this one may be close. PH 32-24 Fountain Central @ Covington - The Mustangs had just enough big plays early on to keep RP at a distance. The Trojans struggled in all aspects against NV and got dominated. Also heard they may have lost their starting QB. FC is still intact and are getting better every week. This game belongs to the Visitors. FC 34-14 Seeger @ Riverton Parke - Patriots blew out Attica early on and got lots of reps for the JV, but they are not as physical as they used to be. The Panthers are still trying to figure out life without #24. They took some big punches early at FC, but for 2 1/2 quarters they traded back and forth with the Ponies, just never capitalized. Whoever plays the most physical will win. I still think RP can turn it around. RP 22-20 North Vermillion @ South Vermillion - Saturday night football! (Again) The boys from Clinton kicked off Little Italy with a blowout of the Woolfs. The Falcons handed out their own whooping of the Trojans. An extra day of preparartion has got to factor in for these two programs and their coaching staffs. SV has the bigger line, but NV line is good at what they do. I think there are going to be lots of scores in this one. SV 48-44

  49. The Squirrel's Picks Attica at PH- This is a conference game that the ramblers can compete in this year. Bad loss for the woofs Saturday its at PH give me the woofs 27-13 FC at Cov- After Saturday Night Covington's flaw has been revealed they are bad up front NV Oline and dline did whatever they wanted to the trojans and the bulk of seniors that graduated for NV last year were lineman like Blank, Galloway , and ZIebart. FC got a good conference win on Friday Acton is a top 5 play and 5 for Covington is not FC 42 Cov 12 Seeger at RP- Seeger is Seeger they are tough and physical RP is still trying to replace Hazzard both teams are good I think the Patriots are better Seeger 38 Rp 6 NV at SV- Major Conference Implications this Saturday at SV. Can NV stop Garzo 2.0 and The SV Offense on the contrary can SV stop White and Tryon. This game will be won in the trenches this week. SV is big but don't sleep on NV's line. The Hinchee kid is physical and Athletic, and the Thomas kid has really came into his own this year compared to a year ago. Hess for SV maybe the best overall lineman this year in the conference and the state when it comes to small schools along with Kearsey who is strong and physical. This game will be close but I think SV has more athletes give me SV in a close game except for the back half of the 3rd quarter. SV 37 NV 26.
