Reminds me of Mike Pence at a Colts game, except that there wasn't an usher to force him back in the seat and it wasn't a per-orchestrated stunt.2 points

Am I the only one who finds "naughty language" like the least of our problems as far as retaining officials? I think this is a solution in search of a problem.2 points
-
Looks to me like a solution looking for a problem. I don't think these are going to make it more respectful or retain officials. However that doesn't mean they aren't good additions to sportsmanship protocol. I think the mandating of head coaches only being allowed to address officials is a direction we should all head towards. Overall I don't ever have a problem with a coach question an official, as long as its done respectfully and in the correct manner. Then in the end, if the official refuses to side with the challenge, there needs to be a agree to disagree mentality. Wrestling several years ago instituted protocol which made it much more civil (you still have heated moments, but many fewer public displays and tantrums).2 points

Blow it all up. How about this: a football only conference with 3 divisions, 18 teams total. Each division with 6 teams. Everyone plays the 5 opponents in their division, and 1 opponent from each of the other 2 divisions for a total of 7 conference games. That leaves 2 open weeks (preferably in weeks 1 and 2) to schedule non-conference opponents or “non-conference” games against members that may not be the crossover opponent from the other divisions. That would allow some rivalries to be maintained. This requires snagging some schools from other conferences, but here’s one breakdown: “Red Division” Jasper Boonville Heritage Hills Southridge Gibson Southern Vincennes Lincoln “White Division” North Knox Pike Central Princeton Washington Linton-Stockton Sullivan “Blue Division” Mount Vernon Forest Park North Posey South Spencer Tell City Tecumseh1 point

Just playing with some numbers, make your own judgments as to trends: In the past 7 seasons, GS has played 7 more games than Jasper and 13 more games than Heritage Hills. Another way to look at it is that Coach Hart has more wins (76) than the total number of games (75) Heritage Hills has played during that same period which happens to be the same number of years (7) both Wilkerson and Hart have been the head coaches of their respective programs.1 point

North Carolina has taken some drastic steps to try and retain officials. Would these steps work in Indiana? I don’t think so. But I’d like to hear what others think. Then, I’ll tell you why I don’t think it will work in Indiana under our present system. But I bet the officials on here can guess what I’m going to say. https://www.referee.com/when-a-state-draws-the-line-on-sportsmanship/1 point

YMCA misread the HH part. My apology, but you can’t believe Jasper is over the hill. As dominant as a program in SW Indiana over the long haul. I’m not sure a couple .500 seasons writes them off. I think Lewis brings a new energy. Fans I talked to at Jammin n Jasper seemed excited.1 point

Scratching my head as to how it got incorporated into the AOC thread. And doesn't seem to be a discussion, either. Two guys "answering" questions without answering, but asking a different question.1 point

I'm left scratching my head with this discussion. One the one hand bashing Christians has pretty much become sport in this country. While the the bible may or may not offer death for the sin of homosexuality, I'm not aware of any instances in recent history where Christians are killing gays for being gay. On the other hand, we're suppose to embrace Islam as a "peaceful" religion, and celebrate diversity, and all the current PC culture. Yet there are any number of incidences in recent history where Muslims have killed people for being gay.1 point

I agree with this 100%. As much as we hate to admit it, we do make mistakes. However, I am there to do my part and make sure the integrity of the game is kept. I will not favor one side of th other. I know a coach will get mad, he/she is human. Profanity does not bother me unless it's from players. I warn them, and the coach the first time, unless I feel it harsh enough to flag for the first defense. However, I do not like being accused of cheating for someone. My integrity is something I am very proud of.1 point

Once again, it is hard to fight the feeling that the show is really dragging things out. The previews look like a LOT more is going to happen than what actually does happen in a show.1 point

The kid has a no-contact provision with the girls swimmers, and that remains in place. But he can compete again. Because the girls aren't around anymore to have "fear exhibited." Anyone that knows anything about the sport of swimming knows the girls are "still around". Swimming is a year round sport and just because the High School season is over doesn't mean the girls aren't at the pool every afternoon for club practice. In fact the Indiana Swimming Senior Short Course Championships are set for Mar 15-17, therefore there is no time off for boys or girls from the end of High School season to the beginning of club practice. Fishers AD has to be well aware of this in that it's Fishers High School pool that is home to the Fishers Area Swimming Tigers (FAST) club swim team. Using "because the girls aren't around anymore" may have pulled the wool over many eyes, but not those familiar with the sport of swimming. Shame on you Fishers administration and HSE school board.1 point

Woah never said HH ship has sailed. Only saying that the PAC has done its best to prove it doesn’t always need a tough SOS to have great success. As for the chatard game, a lot of the grid will say weather is the only thing that stop GS from making it to LOS. Other than that, that team proved that SoS isn’t as important as having a quality team top to bottom. I think you are getting bent out of shape with my comment about jasper. But it’s okay if you disagree. I just personally feel that jasper would benefit more from filling its schedule with non conference games. I am past all this though. Not really something I want to argue for or against. Just an opinion of mine ya know?1 point

If this passes since Mount Carmel only has to leave because of Illinois adding districts if the Big 8 was ok they could stay in the Big 8 if they wanted to because most of their football schedule will be filled with district opponents they might not need a conference for football. Personally I don't understand the football only thing if your going to do this just move GS and HH in the Big 8, Add Tecumseh back into the PAC and try to steal Perry Central from the PLAC to get the PAC back to 8 teams.1 point

I'm assuming it's a money thing. Carmel just got by with it in wrestling. 8 kids and coaches got caught cheating. What's their punishment a couple forfeits and a go ahead and wrestle in the sectional. If these 2 things happened at a small school its see you later and the book thrown at them. But no not Fishers and Carmel because its revenue for the ihsaa. Its absolutely sickening what that kid done. Well done Bobby Cox you're doing a great job. What a joke. Time for you to go1 point

Having coached at both levels myself, I can tell you that it is a HUGE jump. Even from the middle school to freshmen level! The middle schools have no governing body. You can do whatever you want! Practice as much (or little) as you want. Play as many (or few) games as you want. There are no eligibility requirements. It can be the Wild Wild West if you let it. Then you get to the high school and the IHSAA has more regulations than the Obama administration. (I know nothing about politics. I had to google that.) As with many of you, I wish these gentlemen the best of luck. But it isn't going to be easy...1 point

I wonder how many people posting actually know the coach personally? To make a broad sweeping statement expressing concern about a MS coach being hired is not fair. It is apparent from a coouple of posters that know him that he is qualified for this position. Best of luck to the coach and the Gavit program.1 point

I interviewed for this job last year and I was relieved when I got the call that they had offered it to someone else (Obviously Wray). I was relieved because I was prepared to turn the job down if it were offered to me. In the sit down interview alone, the committee mentioned 4-5 times how hard a couple of the board members are to get along with. Then when we toured the building and facilities, the principal brought it up a few more times. The problem with small schools going to state is that some of these small town board members don't understand that they made it to state that one year because they had the athletes to carry them. Those athletes typically don't just regenerate at small schools unless you are allowed to recruit. It sounds like unless there is a board member turnover, this is a job to avoid at all cost (That plus their weight room was an embarrassment!). Which is sad for the players and community. The people on the committee seemed like good people but these board members they talk about will ruin them.1 point

As someone somewhat familiar with the situation, I can tell you that numbers had never been better. The former head coach is a good football coach, and an even better person. I try to stay out of these conversations, but I don't think it can be stressed enough that Robert was doing good things over there. This had to do with the admin being unhappy with wins/losses (according to people in the program). Again, the admin is entitled to make their decisions on staffing, and they chose to go a different route. I have zero knowledge of applicants, etc.. The admin felt the need to move on, and that is their prerogative.1 point

Kind of like hiring a community organizer from the streets of Chicago to run the country. Whoops! did I just say that? Sorry. Banish me to the OOB turf.1 point

I disagree with the apples to oranges part. They are not that different, however the high school happens on a larger scale (not sure it is infinite). The point however, is that when you are a varsity assistant, you are shielded from the administrative duties that being a head coach requires. When you are in charge at any level, there are admin responsibilities that can help to prepare you for the higher level.1 point
-
Not familiar with the school's situation, but I wonder if there are other factors at play here. Maybe (hypothetical) there was a large number of athletes who decided to not play football in high school because the program was so bad, but played in middle school for the coach who was just hired. Perhaps the administration feels by bringing him up to the high school level will get those kids back out (assuming the kids who quit liked playing for the coach in MS). Is it a big jump from MS to running an entire high school program? Absolutely. But if the school feels like he can turn the program around and do it quickly then what's the harm in trying. Maybe it's their last ditch effort at saving the dying program, where if the immediate future is uncertain anyway, what's the worst thing that can happen?1 point
-
I'll preface this by saying I don't know the situation very well, but is it possible the middle school coach runs the same offensive and defensive schemes as the high school team and they are looking for some consistency therein? Maybe the dude is a good leader on and off the field and he has built some relationships with the kids already. Again, I don't know the situation so I may be way off base, but calling it a bad hire before the coach even has a practice seems a little asinine to me.1 point

Coaching at the middle school level may actually help prepare a coach more than being a coordinator or other varsity assistant. The most difficult part about being a head coach is not the coaching part, as that does not change regardless of the level, it is the administrative aspects of the job that it is impossible to prepare for. As a middle school coach, there are a number of administrative duties that parallel those of a head coach. Finding the right person for a job is as inexact a science as there is. I understand that there are any number of factors that must be weighed by candidates when choosing places to be interested in, and the same goes for the schools when evaluating candidates. I hope Gavit found the man they were looking for!1 point
-
What is the pool of applicants for some of these jobs? I wouldn't think that Gavit and SB Washington are highly sought after positions, maybe I'm wrong but I wouldn't think a lot of guys are interested in taking over a program that might not even be around in a few years. Maybe taking a chance on a successful middle school coach who knows the kids coming up is an easier choice than taking a coach from the outside.1 point

To anyone at EC, if anyone needs someone to talk to that has went through this exact thing, We would be happy to help in anyway. On December 28, this very thing happened to the small North Central community when NC Football player Kegan Ennen and 2 of his friends were killed in a car accident. Upon hearing this news today, Kegan’s Mother, (still greiveing the loss of her own son) reached out to me and wanted me to let the EC Football family and the family of the player that lost his life, that if they needed someone to grieve with, talk to, cry with, or just sit with that has experienced exactly what they are going through that they would be happy to help in any way. Please PM me if there is anything we can do. By far the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with as a coach. Prayers and thoughts are with you from both the North Central Football family and the Greenfield Central Football family.1 point
