It's amazing it's 2020 and some cannot still grasp that winning isn't everything. Football doesn't need Anderson, but son of a gun Anderson needs football. Telling me with a straight and honest face the students at Anderson would be better off without football? What planet are you from? That doesn't even add up, even in the least bit. You have no clue what you are talking about.

Well....let’s bring up the uncomfortable conversation many here don’t want to have. Excuse me from droning on...and on...and on. And on. I, literally, see all these different schools (posters) beating their chests about all their great D1 players. It’s been truly tiresome for years for me to read this....since there is no greater TEAM sport than football. Some of you folks simply won’t shut up about them. Apparently we have the next Peyton Manning in Indiana as well. Admittedly, reading the Indiana HS Football Facebook page (some friends recently...and, unfortunately, pointed me towards....and since then I have dropped several levels of IQ after reading) I saw more than a few posting that Merrillville had 12 plus D1 players (or those being recruited). At least here, I only saw “at least” 5 D1 players mentioned. On that same Facebook page, I saw the remark that Chatard had the “best team money can ”buy””....I think, ironically, from a Mt. Vernon Mom (Geist privilege....and a stolen Greenfield QB...). Geist folks (HSE and Mt. Vernon) vs. self-awareness are literally matter vs. antimatter....those generally rotund and non-working Mom’s and their personal trainers exist in a totally Independent universe....admittedly a wealthy one. They are, still, between their Pilates classes, very knowledgeable about Football in archdiocese schools...just ask them. They have important and well-informed opinions. I’d have hoped Chatard could have “bought” at least 1 (Dammit, we tried....just 1) Division 1 player...somehow they failed. Neither did they steal their QB from a neighboring school. Well, since Chatard doesn’t have a single D1 or even D2 player this year apparently Chatard is as cheap a date as I used to be but is ANYONE willing to recognize that football is a team sport and not about how many D1 players you can acquire? Is ANY game more evident of the importance of that than the Chatard/Merrillville game? THIS is what those many tiny, tiny CYO 18 player teams are all about. Let’s be clear, Merrillville was a total and absolute class act from everything that I saw. I absolutely hope they kick the sh!t out of everyone from the North in 6A. Great kids from all I could see. But, if they got anything out of Friday night I hope they got that it’s ALL about team. ....and, yes,....a small Catholic school full of underdogs and undersized players can kick your rear end....and maybe even be one of the best 5-6 teams in the State. By all accounts, they were last year as well. Really, really tired about all these D1 players everyone seems to have.

I understand that. My point was - @Coach Nowlin said both teams are "stuck" in 4A and 5A no matter what... but that is not true. If they win Regional Championships this year, they will both get bumped up ANOTHER class to 5A and 6A respectively.

Nope reclassification took place last year. Because of Elkhart consolidation, they got put in 6A for one season, which then forced Zionsville to bump down to 5A, and Carmel talking their place in the South sectional w/Avon, Bburg, and Pike.

Well i wanted to congratulate the NK Warriors. I know this was a big win for them... and they did it with domination up front on both sides of the ball. Rarely have I seen my Miners on the receiving end of manhandling as I did Friday. Any you know that's hard to admit... but we simply could not stop certain plays all night. we haven't have 400+ rushing as a team on us since 1994. And by my totals 262 for Sheren was the most given up since 1994 as well. Impressed with Doades as well... and really #21 Boyd on Defense. I had him with 16 tackles... Certainly Beau Noland was a dominating player on both sides of the ball. Hammelman, Boyles, Brocksmith, Long.... and that young offensive line truly ran over us. Linton's offense was also stymied. We had a chance early on. A fumble that may or or may not have gotten the 5 yards on 4th down...and certainly the interception in the endzone on drive 2 would have been big for LInton... altho... we kept giving up the huge runs to Sherren, a couple to Doades, and of course one to Thorne. I really thought Linton would come out after the half and get it together...and the defense made the inital stop... just no offense. I think we had three 3 and outs to start 2nd half. ugh. I hope this serves as a huge wake-up call to my Miners that work still needs to be put in... We saw in last year's game that NK was coming on. Here's my opening paragraph in my Lintonian article. It was homecoming night at Roy Williams Field Friday night, but it felt anything like a typical Miner home game. It was the first Warrior win over Linton since 2009’s 15-7 loss at Warrior Field. It ended a stretch of 15 straight losses to the Miners. That loss had been the only loss in 25 meetings since 2000. It certainly was a big win for the Warrior football program having lost the last 10 meetings by a 46-6 nearly 40 points per game. To go further into numbers, it was Linton’s first home loss to the Warriors since I believe 1991, a 20 to 7 NK win. Considering that Sherren and Doades are both juniors and that 4 of the 5 offensive linemen are underclassmen including Noland all return; one wonders how the future will be between these old rivals. Linton has improved it seems week to week building towards an post-season run, but will have to rebound and refocus with a sectional 40 group that is much improved from 2019 including these same Warriors.

1a: LCC wins Regional they are bumped up 2a Lutheran wins Semi State they bump to 2a. West Washington would need to win state to bump up 2a, as would Adams Central 2a: Andrean wins State they bump to 3a Eastbrook wins semi State they bump to 3a: Western Boone Bumps to 3a with a Regional Win. Triton Central must win state to bump to 3a. 3a: Chatard bumps to 4a with regional win Heritage Hills bumps to 4a with Semi State Win: Mish. Marian would need to win state as would Danville to bump to 4a 4a: East Noble will need to win Semi State to bump to 5a, while Memorial already playing up, gets stuck no matter what in 4a this upcoming cycle by winning state last year: Mt. Vernon must win State as does Hobart to bump to 5a. 5a: New Pal is stuck in 5a due to their state finals win last year, they stay up: Valpo must win Regional to bump up to 6a, but they are only down because of consolidation of Elkhart, so them and Lafayette Jefferson will be on that 5a/6a bubble regardless. But if Valpo wins Regional they bump up no matter what. Bloomington South would need to Win state to bump up to 6a. 6a: If Center Grove wins: They must bump up to play in the Pioneer League.

Wins and losses, the worst metric for successful coaches and programs. Ron Qualls will make a difference in the lives of the young men he leads.

Agree, though not living there, but close enough, I echo the sentiments especially the RDP of 219, a storied and valuable football program in the region.

Thanks for the confirmation on that. They have a strong program for a 1A school. Sure wouldn't be upset to see them leave 2A. 🙂 2A North is loaded enough!

If Pioneer wins regional they will remain in 2A. If they lose at regional or prior to that they will bump back to 1A. They are middle of the pack for 1A enrollment.

Great topic. So back in my middle school coaching days I had a play ran AGAINST me that I thought was absolutely brilliant. My 7th grade football team was beating our opposition pretty soundly 21-0 with about 20 seconds left in the first half. The other team had the ball at about the 17 yard line with the time ticking away. Their coach calls a timeout (his last of the half). The other team comes out and runs a simple halfback toss left where my corner comes and makes the tackle with about 14 seconds left on the clock. (now keep in mind I'm standing on a sideline thinking "why the hell would you not throw the football in that situation to at least stop the clock?"). As the other team is scrambling to get the ball set and hiked before time runs out their quarterback and 2 or 3 other players are yelling "SAME PLAY! SAME PLAY!"...they line up, get the ball snapped with a few seconds remaining...halfback toss left again...my corner comes up to make the play tackle, only this time the halfback stops and throws to a wide open receiver in the end zone. I had to tip my cap to their coach for that one.

By next week, I will have officiated 9 of the 13 teams on this list. Not so sure that the list is true representation of the "abilities" of the teams. But to each his own, with the rankings. The postseason will provide a great opportunity to distinguish the differences...within the classes they each represent.

You probably right, but crazy things happen. Was it 2011 when Andrean was stacked, and they ran into a Wheeler team that took advantage of a handful of turnovers and pulled off the upset.

North has lost 2 consecutive games to two teams that had a combined 3 wins going into the game(s). Lincoln had beaten Harrison and Bosse and MD had beaten Lincoln. It's a head scratcher to me. I agree with Spitting Llama that Jasper should handle North without a whole lot of trouble. I was high on North early, but they need to win to stop the descent. I have to think GS would have a tough time against Jasper, who has played a tougher schedule thus far. I'm not sold on Tell City, but I haven't seen them so I'll give them props for their record and the close game with Southridge. GS's only quality win of the year was Boonville by 1 score. Not sure how MD can be ahead of Memorial, who won the head-to-head match-up in Wk. 4 and also throttled Reitz Friday night by close to the same margin as Central did a few weeks earlier. Rather than just critique, I'll throw out my list: 1. Central 2. Southridge 3. Castle 4. Jasper 5. Tell City 6. North T7. Gibson Southern & Memorial (would love to see a full-crowd S32 match-up this year) 9. Mater Dei 10. Lincoln

Playing devil's advocate here, but I've long said if wrestling coaches can seed hundreds of kids in the sectional for what's debatedly the most exciting state tournament, then why can't football coaches too?

I like the message content as well as the tone of the message. Taking responsibility, recognizing the several supports/stakeholders beyond just the team, and no wishy-washiness in the approach ... and a pledge to do better.

I believe a sectional championshipp and you stay up. In 5A that sectional consists of 5 other HHC team (which East has a 105 game win streak against).

Completely agree. The talk of D1 talent is nice and it's fun to see the guys, but it doesn't guarantee success. I think Merrillville does only have 4/5 right now: Seniors: JoJo Johnson to Cincinnati (possibly flipping to Michigan State). He's a standout player and had some nice plays offensively including the long TD reception. Dierre Kelly (DL) to Bowling Green. I don't recall him making much of an impact on Friday night. Phil Gunn (OL) to Ball State. Same as Kelly, didn't really stand out to me. Juniors: Kenneth Grant (Big DL). Currently not committed. Maybe a MAC level talent at this point Lavarion Logan (RB). Maybe a MAC level recruit. Wasn't overly impressed by him on Friday. I get he didn't have much running room, but he didn't show much burst/speed. Also, could end up transferring back to Chicago Mt. Carmel when they resume football next Fall. Who knows. The one team I always think of regarding this topic is the Saginaw team that came down from Michigan to play Penn in 2002. They were absolutely loaded with D1 talent including Lamarr Woodley. Penn ended up winning 49-7. Saginaw played nearly every starter both ways and they were completely gassed. They couldn't hang with a complete Penn team that was fresh from platooning. All along I assumed Chatard would win by about 6-10 because as you say they are a complete TEAM. That program is a well oiled machine that has complete buy in from the CYO level. IMO, when it's trully beneficial to have D1 talent, is when you're already a full functioning team and one or a few D1 recruits add the extra layer. Off the top of my head, guys like Jeff Samardzija, Jeremy Finch, Darren Evans, Sheldon Day, James Banks and Jaylon Smith took Valpo, Warren Central, Ben Davis, and Bishop Luers to an entirely different level.

If anything such by-laws become nothing more than CYA jargon for the IHSAA to hide behind should things go south; "Our by-laws say we don't recommend/advocate these kind of changes, but our membership insisted on it so if really isn't our fault."

Whether Jasper needs to be ranked higher or lower than North will work itself out this Friday.

Yet for some strange reason they do exactly that. Why was the long-time traditional one-class basketball tournament, one of the best athletic events in the nation, split out to four enrollment-based classes? It sure as heck wasn't to increase attendance. No, it was mostly because smaller schools finally got sick and tired of feeding into sectionals where they inevitably ran into the buzzsaw of the larger, more powerful school. See places like Kokomo for prime examples. And in this age of "Johnny needs a trophy" and "all kids are special" what better way to feed that than to increase the number of trophies? AKA change the competitive balance of the game.

Football reaches out to more than just the players on the team. The band and cheerleaders get to participate, as well as any students who help in support positions like managers and concession workers. That would reach out a little further in the student population. Even students in attendance are at a supervised event and not looking for other things to do. I don't agree with this as an investment. If you save one child from turning the wrong direction, what is that worth?

I think there are many other issues at play when it comes to Anderson's athletic success since the consolidation of Anderson Highland after the 2010 school year. First - it is a well known fact that many of those families ended up sending their kids to Pendleton Heights, Yorktown, Lapel and Frankton over them all going to Anderson High School. If you notice, all of those schools have done pretty darn well in football, boys basketball and girls basketball in the last 10 years. As well - there has to be something going on within the Athletic Department and the hallways of Anderson High School. It is still a big enough school to get athletes from and be competitive, but they need the right coaches and enough support to encourage the students to play athletics. Outside of a solid 3 year stretch from the girls basketball team from 2012-2014, here are those 3 main programs records since 2010: Football: 29-79 (0.269 winning percentage) - with 1 winning season Boys Basketball: 71-161 (0.306 winning percentage) - with 1 winning season Girls Basketball: 128-113 (0.531 winning percentage) - with 4 winning seasons In my opinion, it looks more like a culture change that needs to occur within the school building to encourage/promote the benefits of extracurricular athletics while also making sure the programs have the right coaches and enough support to be successful.
