Back in the day, playing in the mud was fun, and to add on to what Dumfries said, and looking at the picture Thor posted, restoring a field back to good condition is very expensive. That includes the number of man hours involved in the work. And it may take years to fully restore it. Until it is restored, the field is useless. Schools that cannot afford to fully restore a field, will do patchwork repair. That, in my opinion, puts student athletes at far greater risk than the turf. Too many have these visions of their schools having had perfect fields like many NFL and college teams have, and that just is not the case. In the bigger picture, the new turf fields are safer, and save districts money.

Come on now. anyone who has played on grass in Indiana knows that by October/early November it’s basically like playing in concrete. The grass has stopped growing…gets cold and wet….grounds managers can’t really fix anything either. It’s nice on the grass in august when it hasn’t been destroyed and patched up 10x over and everything is level and it’s still warm. 2 months in though it’s just dirt spots and a few ankle killers scattered around

The last 12 years has seen a mad rush to get turf fields. On PMS today, it was discussed that they are widely despised by players because of the abuse on the body. Rip them up and go back to sod.

Actually it is the opposite. They are making a big push to bring back grass fields in the NFL because of Sterling Shepard and Odell Beckam Jr both having non-contact injuries on turf fields.

I've always felt Mike Wilson was a good coach and solid person, and kind of got the shaft when the move to the new school happened. North had inadequate facilities and what seemed like less support than some of the other EVSC schools for much of the time he was there. When all that changed, he got pushed out. We have a couple of coaches from his staff that have been with us for 10 years or so, and they have been great additions.

My mom was the best, she prepared me for life, hence I was doing my own laundry in HS and ever since! If you want it done right, do it yourself!

It happened…just once in like 28 years or something though at the time (2010) score was like 35-34 after OT I believe. We went like 4-6 that year and made tshirts of the scoreboard of that game with big letters saying “enough said” like we had won the conference or something. The following year (last year before Hart) we got whooped like 27-0 in the jungle lol. I still remember walking behind the trees to the practice field and coach yelling at us because we allowed 2 scores in the final 2 minutes of the half. Then we opened the 2nd half with like 3 failed onside kicks in a row because we were doing it wrong and had to redo it. It was a long bus ride home lol

I don't think Dumfries was knocking the O or anyone on it, just noting some things that Coach has said also. The offense has been performing really, really well and we all can see how close the boys on that side of the ball are getting to being unstoppable. I think it is a shared yearning for their success, not a criticism of the boys. A defense has less to worry about in getting a squad clicking, so I think that is why that side of the ball is looking better at this point, given everyone's experience. Relatively speaking, a cake walk compared to getting the offense firing on all cylinders. The O has so many more moving parts to get right. It isn't out of the ordinary to take a little more time to get everything figured out, especially when so many were on the sidelines all last year, just champing at the bit to get in, grinding out scout team and JV reps. The important thing is they are winning and, more importantly, I think they'll be near or at 100% in late October and November when it counts. They've been tested in the first half of the season and performed admirably when it was gut check time. The O hasn't faltered when it has mattered and, frankly, performed above and beyond where many thought they'd be. I knew they'd be as good as advertised, but then again I've been watching this crew for, oh... a decade or so already 😀

I remember, I played on it in the 80's. Def nice not having the harsh fall/winter weather. This year has been difficult for grass fields. Extreme drought conditions in central TX nearly all summer and water rationing in my area. I'd hate to see the high school's water bill!

Field Turf err day of the week, and Sunday too. Grass sux now that I have seen the FUTURE! I have come to abhor grass fields for multiple reasons...weather being the least of it.

In ideal settings, sure, I have no problem saying grass is better, but there are/were a LOT of fields like the one we had. I pointed to our program as an example. I am willing to bet they are plenty of stories very similar. To clarify my point, the turf field has been MUCH safer than the grass field in the condition it was in. And, I am betting there are a lot schools who could also make that claim.

I fully agree that more scientific study on this issue needs to be conducted. Research across multiple sports and including HS, college, and professional teams. I think there is a place for intelligent discussion and analysis of the data surrounding field turf and injuries to the lower extremities, especially the knee. I'm just not so sure this is the place. 🙂

Not at all........on our grass field, I know of 3 players whose career ended with serious knee injuries, between the game field we played on and our practice field.....have not had a single serious injury in the 5 seasons the turf has been in place.

I seem to find myself enjoying the other state championships that don’t include 6A. Have been a number of great games with great teams that are on the list after the top 5. Especially 3A…and 3A is never going to crack the top 5. Once in a lifetime special 3A teams would barely make the top 10 on most rankings…but they sure do have a lot of competitive teams who put on great games and are worth following

When did carpet come into the mix with concrete? Most Catholic school kids probably recall that there really wasn't a true "playground" for recess in elementary school. After the cars dropped off kids in the morning, the parking lot became the playground. To make matters worse at our school, the school uniform required hard-soled shoes unless your class was on "gym day" ... then you were allowed to wear tennis shoes. You learned very quickly how to make cuts on concrete and oil slicks when you were playing and how to control your body to keep from ending up on that concrete surface. And God forbid it had rained before recess. Acrobatic catches are all the rage on ESPN, but try making those on concrete.

That's fair....I've been watching the MIC a long, long time. Bet this NP team and some of the past could hold their own....but I agree year in and year out, that would be a tall order. And I agree...playing a season long schedule takes its toll. That is why I commented in my first post, a single 6A win is interesting. Beating a number of 6A teams is a trend.

I'm not sure New Pal could hold their own on a week week basis in the MIC quite yet. A gauntlet of Warren, LC and BD in a 3-4 week span is tough for a team with such a depth disadvantage. Now, in a one game scenario I think they could defeat all three and am tempted to even say they would be favored over all three if the contest were this weekend. NEVER thought I would say that a few short years ago.

Roncalli lost their soccer field when they built the Fine Arts wing. Due to ADA regulations, it was going to cost over $1.5 million to build a new grass soccer stadium. Instead Roncalli saved over $700,000 by placing field turf on the football field. Now that facility is used nearly every day all year round - band practices, football practices & games, soccer practices & games, lacrosse practices & games, early season baseball practices, early season softball practices, CYO football games, K-2 flag football games, Scecina football game rentals, IHSAA football playoff game rentals, professional ultimate disc game rentals, graduation ceremonies, etc.

You are experiencing some very special places.....my good buddy's son played at Miami OH and later OK State....he experienced the same. Although the Glass Bowl is pretty special as well. You won't get an argument from me on how the DAC should be one of the best conferences. It should be at worst 4th (I don't think its unreasonable to accept that the SAC will be better some years, especially starting next year with the big school division). If I had to do a top 25, without copping out and doing ties (because I think some of these teams are extremely close), it would look something like this: 1. Roncalli 2. Carroll 3. CP 4. Chatard 5. Anyway here's Week 7 North Vermillion @ Parke Heritage- NV is at least decent and well coached. Sarcasm aside, their state team obliterates SV 70-6 looking like an RP Jr High Score. PH is not good. I don't think this is ever close but it won't be a complete blowout. NV 28-6 Riverton Parke @ Attica- Panthers looked bad last week with the whole conference watching. I do think they are actually improved just not "there" yet, must be them playing in the Terre Haute Youth League or something that has made them step up their game. Early in the season I wasn't convinced Attica would still be playing games at this point in the season, not easy to go out there and get beat up on every week. RP wins big even if they are banged up, I think they'll show some mercy and play some young kids. RP 41-6. Seeger @ Covington- Even if Seeger is a bit banged up I just don't think that Covington can hang around for very long. Getting in a dog fight with PH isn't a good thing post closing the transfer portal. Patriots pitch a shutout and it'll be a showdown with the Cats with conference on the line. South Vermillion @ Fountain Central- Wildcats not so Mild last week. Thought RP might give them a little more of a fight but RP may have another year or two to truly be "there" consistently. I don't think that FC has the athletes to hang around but maybe Herbie can scheme enough and work the officials to stay in it. Sometimes coaching matters and I do think FC is better coached. Coaching won't matter here. SV 49-19.

As a New Pal fan I am very interested in seeing how Roncalli does. Since it seems they have a run heavy offense will the passing game be able to step up. I am an Indy homer so I hope Roncalli can pull all these games out. However, if not I pray they keep it close and stay healthy. I look forward to a great regional game against Roncalli come November.

Lol, it was just fine for the one single game, but has been a mess ever since. A full off-season of recovery and it still isn’t fully back yet. Hopefully turf soon!

The MOST important thing for Triton is when they get on that bus to come home from Judson is, the belief that they can beat them if they meet again the Sectional!

I would also add that the use of turf fields has increased for mort schools dramatically. Just being able to have Physical Education classes using it is significant, but the band and soccer programs likely use them now as well. I know they do here. The PAL teams get to use it along with the middle school. Prior to turf, we were limited to just the Varsity, JV, frosh, and middle school games....no practices at all.

You can also practice daily on field turf which you can't do on a grass game field. A turf field is more practical for schools in the long run because you can use it year round for a multitude of events which you really can't do with a grass field, especially if you are rehabbing it after football season.

A win over Memorial this weekend gives them an Automatic share of the Title, and potentially wins it outright. However, they can lose to Memorial and Mater Dei, but still be abled to lay claim to their first SIAC since 2017(shared or not). If Reitz does somehow lose their next 3 games (including Week 8 against Bosse), this could be a lot interesting, but a very slim chance of happening. Elimination watch: Memorial, Vincennes, Castle, and Mater Dei All the 4-2 teams will be looking at Memorial this Friday for their title hopes, in my opinion. A Memorial loss unofficially seals it up

Is this thread serious??? Isn't there a big push in the NFL right now to get rid of all sod/grass fields because of injuries?? Believe it was the Shepard receiver who went down on Monday night and they made a big deal about grass fields being unsafe.

I'm not sure if I should laugh at this or not to be honest. Ill take the 2007 Rox over any of those teams.
