Just another example of why semistate games should be played at neutral sites that reduce travel distance and can accommodate larger crowds.6 points

The outpouring of support for Coach Bowsman and his family just reaffirms what I've always said about this game, ultimately it's about relationships. I read an interview with Levon Helm a long time ago, and he made a statement I've never forgotten. "We all start out thinking we're going to change the world, at the end of the day if you just helped your neighborhood, you did alright." You did alright Coach Bowsman!5 points

The key matchup in this game is Memorial's def front vs EN offensive line. EN's offensive line is much larger, but Memorial's front 4 has overwhelmed nearly every team they have faced. Comb's speed and power can't be fully appreciated until you see him live. The EN QB will be the best Memorial has faced all year. Central had some outstanding receivers, but they were 5'6. These EN receivers are 6'6 and 6'4. Both teams boast diverse spread offenses. EN is a better run team, but Memorial is a better screen and gimmick play team. Going to be a great game!2 points

Not to mention the defensive touchdown early in the second quarter was neither a lateral nor a catch/fumble. Should not have been ruled a live ball. But it's the same field that I saw my first and only roughing the holder penalty just a year earlier so I am not surprised.2 points

Yes, Guerin is one of two Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana. LCC is the "older, smaller brother" while Guerin is the "younger, bigger brother." Guerin started out in 1A in 2006, but quickly grew to 2A by the 2011 season, and its current 3A class back in 2013. The two teams play every year since Guerin started playing IHSAA football in 2006. At stake is the Bishop's Cannon trophy which was donated by Bishop Emeritus William L. Higi who also was at the helm of the Diocese when Guerin was built. Tradition states that the Bishop attends the game between the two "sons" of the Diocese and, so as not to show favoritism, sits on one side for the first half and then, at halftime, switches to the other side to equally support both schools. LCC leads the series 10-4, but Guerin has won the last three meetings and four of the last six.2 points

To do 4 games in a day the first game would have to start at 8am or the last game start at 11pm midnight... That would be the first strike against this idea...2 points

Noblesville loses athletes to Guerin. But there are plenty in that school that can be harvested. Just like when Kevin Wright went to Warren, he dove head first into the student body and got guys to hit the weights and awoke a sleeping giant. I'm not saying Noblesville could ever be a Warren Central, but there are potentials roaming those halls.2 points

https://reason.com/2019/11/26/indiana-wesleyan-micah-sample-cultural-appropriation/ Rude? Perhaps. Edgy? Sure. An example of targeted harassment, worthy of formal sanction? Surely not. But the post generated many complaints. Several students even filed bias response reports. (These are also contained in Sample's file.) IWU's bias reporting system asks the victim to give the name of the perpetrator, provide documentation of the offense, and explain the impact. One victim said Sample's post "made me feel upset and shaken." Still another wrote "he cannot state that cultural appropriation is irrelevant/idiotic and mock other religions and cultures," as if disagreeing with with someone else's beliefs constituted criminal behavior. Based on the feedback, Sample apologized for how he worded his post. "I think that views which may be in conflict with those held by administrators, staff, students, or organizations ought to be not only allowed, but perhaps even encouraged, because I value diversity of thought, and that was my original point," he wrote. "I did not express that well initially, and for that, I'm sorry." The file contains copies of emails exchanged between various IWU administrators. They take note of Sample's apology but conclude that "I don't think this changes our course of action." Next, the dean of the Honors College, David Riggs, emailed Sample to inform him that the college was "beyond disappointed" with his "deeply problematic and offensive" post. "As a result, the faculty decided it is necessary for us to issue a public statement making clear that we find this sort of uncharitable and inflammatory use of social media to be at odds with the ethos of our Christian liberal learning community," wrote Riggs. But merely issuing a statement wasn't enough. The university also decided to inform Sample that he was potentially in violation of university policy relating to harassment and disruptive behavior. He was asked to appear for a meeting six days later, where "based on the information gathered, a decision will be made." It soon became clear that the decision to sanction Sample had already been made, and could only have been avoided if the student had groveled before the administration. The file contains the notes of an administrator named Laura Bronsink, who met with Sample and explained that "based on only reading the post he seemed to have no concern for how others might respond. … It did not seem to invite a conversation, but rather antagonize individuals to respond with their opinion, even though his mind would not change." On this basis, Sample was found responsible on the two charges. IWU has three levels of probation: verbal warning, disciplinary warning, and citizenship probation. Sample's thought crimes were so egregious that the university had placed him in the most serious category—citizenship probation. He would be suspended from his extracurricular activities—including his position in the student government—for 60 days. He was also required to write a two-page reflection paper. Finally, after additional back and forth, he was dismissed from the honors program entirely. What he wrote in his reflection paper probably didn't help his case: Reading through Sample's responses to the patronizing and melodramatic missives of the administration, I noticed that his own conviction he did nothing wrong—indeed, that he was the victim—increased over time. In fact, he eventually filed his own bias complaint, asserting that the university had discriminated against him on the basis that he had been perceived as a white male. (Sample asserts he has Native American ancestry, and thus his declaration that he would appropriate this culture was not offensive.) "I am convinced that the Leftists in power desire nothing less than total domination over their students' ideas and worldviews," Sample told me. If the university wanted to persuade a young man that railing against social justice warriors wouldn't win him many converts, its strategy backfired. Administrators appear to have made Sample more convinced that progressives don't want to hear ideas they find offensive, more convinced that lefty-sympathetic authority structures will violate principles of free speech and due process to punish wrongthink, and more convinced that he was right to mock them. It surely appears the snowflakes rule the roost at IWU.1 point

As a fairly new official, I cringe when I read these types of comments. Was the game called unfairly? Was it lopsided? I'm guessing not. The crews that were picked for the Semi-State were solid crews. I can promise you that the crew you had didn't care one bit who won the game, but definitely cared about calling a good fair game. I'm guessing they prepared ahead of time, talked among each other before the game about having a good game, shared critical feedback with each other at half time, and did the best they could. Most of you will never see this side of officiating but I'm telling you.......we prepare very hard and take it very seriously. We do take it personally. And we try our best. It's a different world out on the field compared to the stands. The speed of the game increases by a factor of 10. You've got keys and things to keep track of on every snap. With a million different scenarios that could happen on any play and you have to officiate it and your expected to be perfect. But nobody is perfect. I encourage anyone that reads this post to think twice the next time you decide to yell or degrade an official. I promise you, we put in a lot of time and effort and do the best that we can. For your information, 146 crews applied for the tourney. Out of those crews, 12 were selected for the semi-state games. They were all good crews.1 point

People have been saying that all year yet HH seems to get stronger and play better in the second half when they are supposed to be gassed. Gibson Southern runs a no huddle offense at a way faster rate and we owned the 4th quarter to secure the W1 point

Something that bonds those that have played the game to everyone else that has played the game. Something about being part of the "warrior class" always binds you to the guy next to you and the guy across from you. BTW, absolutely love that Levon Helm quote! I didn't know Coach Bowsman, but from the comments of all that have posted, I feel like I did.1 point

pressbox was also in disbelief on the onside, lots of, caught a break on that one chatter. would made an excellent ending, but in all pass situation, I am not sure Andrean would of been able to keep Eastbrook out of the backfield if they sent 4 or 5 guys.1 point

Misspoke, meant to say Zionsville. You are correct about Valpo's offense, not much to say, they are a puzzle up this way. Big and strong Oline, not better than New Pals, but whose Online is? They are obviously darn good. A big and strong quarterback, with sneaky good athleticism, and a stable of RB's that are solid, but nothing great. For whatever reason, they don't pass the ball down the field as the QB generally has a clean pocket, in stead he just does three step drops and either they run the old school route tree, 1 5 and 9s. They didn't really have to pass against Mville even though they were down multiple TD's, they were down a TD against MC and threw on several 3 and longs, but other than that, they haven't had to pass the ball. I've watched those games New Pal has played against those two teams. I know both Decatur Central and MC loaded the box against New Pal last year and got exposed on the backend, I will also be interested to see if New Pal can do the same against Valpo. This will also be the ultimate test of two teams that don't make killer turnovers or penalties. Will New Pals QB outplay Valpo's is what I see as the difference. Who will make the least mistakes or the key play, which one of the two will not panic when these two awesome defenses are making the game extremely fast.1 point

I’m having doubts that you watched the game. To start off With him not moving is a testament to the game plan New Pal had. They were providing help and neutralizing the NG very rarely did they leave him 1 on 1 with an O-lineman. Secondly did you miss the play where the DT you say didn’t move burst through hitting the QB in the backfield and took the ball from the QB. him being pushed back into the secondary is what NP O-lone is capable of doing. The New Pal O-line is very disciplined, very strong, has excellent foot work, and excellent technique. This has been something I have noticed on film since Coach Ralph has been Head Coach at Nee Pal. Considering Coach Ralph was an All State O-lineman and considered a top 25 O-lineman coming out of St. X Cincy and then went on to be All ACC and the #10 Guard in the Country while at UNC it is no surprise he teaches his O-line to be very disciplined and to pay attention to detail (footwork, technique, etc) We will see how the State Championship game plays out. That being said New Pal is very good and not all hype. They moved the ball very well against Cathedral whom had an excellent defense that was put to the test against several very good offenses throughout the year.1 point

Two things that come to mind about Coach Bowsman, whenever we played them you knew you were going to face a bunch of hard nosed, tough kids who played their hearts out for their coach and secondly, whether it was a game or 7 on 7 event they hosted, you were always treated as if you were the most important team there. Even though our parents fed our kids after the games, they were always offered more from the WW staff. How does all of this happen? To quote a line from Remember the Titans...."attitude reflects leadership" Great coach and even better person. RIP Coach1 point

Now I remember what I miss from the 1A threads. How we could always have pages and pages of discussions based on different years, games, and players who have long since moved on. Always managing somehow to make it relevant to a game about to be played this year. 🙂 2A threads are so much more boring I tell ya.1 point

The game stayed close, but you could tell watching it that they were going to need some serious help to hang in there for 4 quarters. Playing a day extra rest/prep on Friday at home with the 3 hour drive that HH had helped Danville stay in it longer then they should have. Along with all the holding calls that kept stopping drives from ending in scores. The final score was actually very indicative of the game. Teams like Heritage Hills with their methodical physical style are used to wearing teams out over the course of the game. And that's what happened. They wore out Southridge and Lawrenceburg the same way. If it wasn't for a miracle conversion on 4th and 21 with 2 minutes to go, the final would have been 33-10 and that's about the kind of game most with a rational knowledge of football thought it would be. HH could have easily had 4 INT's, as they flat out dropped one that was thrown right to the DB. Its also that methodical physical style that gives them a chance to hang in there against Chatard, when some think they have little chance. Danville doesn't lose much (although they were playing about 6 or 7 guys both ways ) and its likely a few additions from other school systems will magically appear to help improve the roster, if recent history holds form.1 point

As a tribute to Coach Bowsman, I had a cross fashioned that stands 6'3" tall (I thought he was more like 6'2", but he always said he was 6'3"). It is placed at the 50 yard line,on the home sideline just on the field of play (where Coach roamed, despite repeated warnings to "get back"). Community members, students, staff and former players and coaches have visited to share memories of coach and leave mementos and grieve the loss of a great man. We thank you all for your prayers and support.1 point

Where I am confused is that, without Success Factor, which is what you said, LCC would have remained in 1A in 2013 and 2014. It's highly likely that LCC would have prevailed in 2013 and 2014 in 1A. At the same time, as has been pointed out by folks like @Coach Nowlin, LCC also had an unusual run of talent bunching at that time. The current 2019 squad looks much more like the standard LCC teams before the four-peat. With that in mind, I think that you are right that there more of a general mix in 1A then perhaps in other classes. I was just having a discussion with someone today who was lamenting that LCC beat up on all those county schools and they mentioned Pioneer by name. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I think LCC and Pioneer are pretty close to split in their series against each other.1 point

I don't get how the first incident didn't violate some sort of Child Pornography laws in which the person in possession/took the video wasn't held accountable. The teacher that "helped" the kid delete the video should be terminated, immediately. This school terminated an employee for a completely legal (though Catholics deem immorral) relationship. IF they don't immediately terminate all of those involved they are taking a stand of termination based on sexual preference vs termination of protecting a special needs child. I then want charges against those responsible... The kids, adults, teachers, staff, etc. ALL OF THEM1 point
-
I have a feeling it was the "Leaders" in the locker room that was apart of this. While I would have kicked the player in the first incident off the team to send a message, how do you continue to let Jack go into the locker room unsupervised? How do you not make sure there is someone supervising in the locker room period! It shouldn't have to be that way, but obviously you have a culture problem in your locker room. Totally incompetent!1 point

In Indianapolis, each side of town has several feeder Catholic Schools that feed into the Archdiocesan High Schools. Southside-St. Barnabas, Saint Rose of Lima, St. Jude, St. Mark, St. Roch, Our Lady of Greenwood, St. Francis/St. Claire, Nativity, Central Catholic, Holy Name go into Roncalli. Eastside- Our Lady of Lourdes, Catholic Academies, Little Flower, Holy Spirit Indy, St. Lawrence, St. Michael (Greenfield) go into Scecina. Westside--St. Monica, St. Michael's, Holy Angels, St. Gabriel, St. Malachy (Not very knowledgable on the Westside lol) go into Ritter Northside---Immaculate Heart, St. Pius, Christ the King, St. Louis de Monfort, Our Lady of Carmel, St. Simon, Holy Spirit Geist, St. Luke, St. Matthew, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Maria Goretti, Our Lady of Grace (Noblesville), go into Guerin or Chatard... But really any Catholic school student can go anywhere they'd like, but mainly you see students stay on their side of town. However, Brebeuf and Cathedral realistically pull their students from all sides of town and these feeder schools.1 point

I would wonder why team leadership itself in the locker room didn't seize this situation early on, and get that behavior stopped from the get-go.1 point

Actually - outside of one school (Cathedral), I think the questions about "recruiting" and "feeder schools" and all that other stuff just needs to stop. I personally do not care how many Marian kids came from feeder schools. That is for IHSAA to police/monitor...good or bad. Every comment made is outlandish and tarnishes the team and the players who work so hard, not fair to paint them with that brush. That being said - thank you to Marian for their hospitality and for a great game. Great families and great players. Many of whom were gracious enough to wish us luck long after the game was over - class act!1 point

So incredibly disappointing in all senses of the word followed by anger I understand kids make really poor choices all the time, but I started my career as Life Skills teacher, have a great friend who has a son with special needs, I understand fully the fear that parents have with their children with special needs in school and public settings. Easily their biggest fear is them not being able to protect themselves or manipulated into doing something like this. Shameful. With that all being said, just a reminder when these stories break, the GID guidelines have always been : Stick to facts presented in verified news outlets (such as the link up in the 1st thread) Juveniles have protected rights1 point

Roncalli just cannot seem to keep itself out of the news. Sooooooo many people failed this young man; from the guys on the team he was the most loyal fan of, to the adults in the building who should have done more, but swept it under the rug. I feel horrible for this young man and his mom. Just thinking about the humiliation he experiences replaying these incidents every day makes me sick to my stomach. Sadly, it’s just another example of the double standard in place. A great employee, who excelled at what she did is terminated simply because of who she is, and this stuff is excused by the so many of the same people. The Dean of Students should be dismissed immediately and charged with failure to report. https://www.wthr.com/article/police-investigate-alleged-assault-inside-roncalli-football-locker-room1 point
