Not big on predictions (for good reason) but I think GS got their “scare” against a tough-minded and talented Lawrenceburg squad. As an aside, as much as people in various corners of the state like to claim they’re “disrespected” NOBODY gets less respect than Southeast Indiana and, generally, when Lawrenceburg and East Central come boiling out of that corner of the state they don’t go down easy and if they do go down they generally leave a Helluva “mark”. Personally, I think Gibson Southern wins this Semi-State game going away. I can’t see them looking past Tri-West at this point and I think they are simply supremely talented as a team. I think that this game, from their perspective, is not so much a “survive and move on game” as it is a “statement game”. A lot of us who have watched 3A South the last decade understand that GS is a perennial contender but they are oft overlooked by the rest of the State when they only see Memorial or Heritage Hills coming out that part of the State in 3A. It’s perhaps been too long coming but GS has something to prove and I think they aren’t going to miss this opportunity to prove it.

So in 3A…2017 Memorial drills Danville (I was at that game). 2018 Memorial drills Chatard who drilled Tri-West the week before. 2019 Heritage Hills drills Danville. 2020 Danville beats SR. So by my math that’s 3-1 in the last four years for southern Indiana. And I have yet to see what that has to do with 2021 GS.

After explaining how the coaches’ vote is conducted, we have progressed to the point in our analysis of the system where it has been well-demonstrated that the annual coaches’ vote is the primary differentiating factor that determines officiating crew selection and advancement in the playoffs. The question now under discussion is whether that serves the goals we’ve identified for the process. The answer is mixed. Let me state at the outset that I have nothing but the greatest respect for coaches. I couldn’t do their job. Their job is a lot harder than mine. The vast majority of them fill out their coaches’ vote ballot conscientiously, attempting to do the best job they can. As explained below, however, they are unsuited for the job. I have seen an awful lot of high school football over the years. Still, my knowledge of the workings of the Wing-T pales in comparison to that of even the greenest assistant coach. Why would anyone expect the reverse not to be true when it comes to officiating? I would certainly hope we hear from some coaches on this topic. If you would prefer not to comment publicly, please PM me with your comment and I will see that it gets into the discussion without attribution. Recall that one of the goals of the process is to “give all relevant stakeholders a voice.” Clearly, coaches are significant stakeholders in the process. The coaches’ vote gives them a voice. So, the existing process supports that goal. However, the other goals the coaches’ vote purports to advance all relate to the correlation between coaches’ vote and officiating proficiency. Unfortunately, as demonstrated below, the coaches’ vote is not just an unreliable way to gauge officiating proficiency, it actually has some undesirable effects on officiating behavior. The flaws in the coaches’ vote as an indicator of officiating proficiency are many. Some are obvious, some are subtle. These 7 come to mind in no particular order. After listing them, I'll expound on them one by one, generating (I hope) lots of questions and comments. Please, officials, don't take this as an opportunity to b*tch about how your crew got screwed. This is a more general discussion on the merits and flaws of the process. Coaches are not trained evaluators of officiating performance. Coaches are not unbiased: outcomes influence perceptions. Coaches are not given clear enough standards, and the standards they are given promote inconsistency and do not correlate to officiating excellence. Coaches are not required to rate every crew they see during the period under review, introducing selection bias to the process. The coaches’ vote provides officials with no useful feedback. Coaches often have misconceptions about the practical effect of their votes. Coaches vote dependence influences officiating behavior in a negative way. Let's take these identified "flaws" in the coaches' vote process one by one. 1. Coaches are not trained evaluators of officiating performance. Asking coaches to rate officiating performance is asking them to do a job for which they are neither educated nor trained. Most coaches know most of the rules. No coach, in my experience, knows the rules to the extent an official should. And rules knowledge is only the most basic skill involved in officiating proficiency. Most coaches are completely unschooled in officiating mechanics, and have little understanding of the philosophies that are drilled into officials, allowing them to properly apply black and white rules to real game situations. Every official has had the experience of making a rules mistake … and the crew being the only ones in the stadium aware of it. Frankly, it is unfair to the coaches to ask them to do a job for which they are unsuited. And how do officials feel about it? Just imagine how you would feel at your job if the people in control of your professional advancement had never done your job, didn’t know what your job entailed, and had never been told what it is that makes you good – or bad -- at your job. That is not to say that input from coaches should not or cannot be a factor in assessing officiating proficiency. Coaches are well equipped to comment on the crew’s appearance, demeanor, professionalism, communication skills, hustle, etc., all qualities which have a place in evaluating an officiating crew. But to exalt those qualities over rules knowledge, solid mechanics, and proper application of officiating philosophy – as the current process does -- is not likely to either identify the most skilled crews, or advance officiating proficiency as measured by any conceivable metric. This is the all-city team you want to make because it is voted on by your opponents. I think it is a bigger honor to be recognized by your peers than by some writers for the Courier/Press.

LOL... Absolutely nothing.

LCC beat Pioneer 31-14 in that regional game, not exactly a nail-biter. I know the game was closer than the score shows, but you kind of knew if you were there LCC never really felt super threatened. Also Pioneer graduated arguably one of the the best classes they have had go through the program that year with a lot of good seniors including Jack's older brother Sam. Jack played really well that game, but I think even he would tell you he didn't make it a good game all on his own. Also, not trying to take anything away from Jack Kiser, but he played a heavy 1A schedule and also played 1A competition in the playoffs every year. Being at Andrean, Bowen plays a lot of bigger schools as well as a 2A playoff schedule. Would Jack still be dominate at a 2A level? Most definitely. Would Bowen look even more dominate playing Caston, Triton, Knox, and others in that league? Most definitely. I don't think its fair to compare the numbers or how dominate one looks over the other based on this. As for the 5-star, it has to do with the potential the kid still has. He's only a junior, and as far as build goes, the kid looks like he knows where the weight room is and visits it often. I think he will do just fine at ND. The physical tools are there, and ND is a good program for coaching players up, especially at the position he will probably play. Being a former college player that has experienced 5 years of playing, that first redshirt year will do wonders for him. He's not going to be ready to go day 1, but he will get where he needs to be to have success at ND long-term.

This will be the first time Ames Field or even Michigan City will ever host a semi-state in any sport. Elston won boys basketball in 1966 and girls cross country in 1993 and 1994 and MCHS won volleyball in 1995 but the semi-states were either away games or at neutral sites. Everybody here is very excited and all the business have all their marquees and store front windows with a message in support of the team.

We played on grass until last year and still have the old grass/ stadium for middle school & practice if needed. We played at NorthWood on grass and did alright in sectionals.

Did some quick analysis and found the following data points (considering Pike and LC as MIC the entire time): In the last 25 years, a MIC team has won state 20 times (could be 21 this year if CG or BD wins); 3 of the 4 were were 1997-200) In that same time 66% of the games the MIC lost were to other MIC teams Of 59 instances where a MIC team lost to a non-MIC team, the following teams won: Avon 8 (Pike 4 times), Bloomington South 7 (Center Grove 5 times 1997-2006), Fishers 5, and Cathedral 4 (LN and LC both in 2015 and 2016) Surprising teams that knocked out MIC teams were Lafayette Jeff (2002), Noblesville (2000), Northrop (1999), and Homestead (1998)over Carmel; Columbus East (2010), Columbus North (2008), and Terre Haute North (2005) over Center Grove; and Richmond over Warren Central (1997) In the last 9 years since Pike and LC joined the MIC, a MIC team has won every year, 75% of the MIC losses were to other MIC teams In that period MIC teams lost to non-MIC teams only 14 times; 4 were Cathedral and 8 were HCC teams (Avon, Fishers, Brownsburg, Zionsville); Penn had the other 2 The MIC domination of the playoffs has existed for 20+ years but has definitely been greater the past 9 seasons.

Granted - we (SR) have not put our best foot forward in those contest. I could provide a myriad of reasons, but doesn't change the fact that we just got it handed to us. That said - I still don't think TW has any idea what it is up against.

This isn't a "one OR the other" situation. Just because Jack Kiser was amazing does not mean that Bowen is not also a fantastic football player. Big time football programs offered Bowen for a reason. Those staffs are paid tons of money to win games and they wouldn't offer a 5 star LB if they thought he was just an ok football player. I get that programs can be wrong in their evaluation of recruits, but just because Kiser put up better numbers than Bowen does not make him a lesser player. You really can't compare the level of competition that Pioneer and Andrean face. How about we just appreciate the fact that both players are extremely talented??? That being said, you can't count Eastside out because they have a special athlete in Laban Davis. I'm not sure if Davis really has any offers to play at the next level, or if he is even interested in doing so, but he could definitely contribute to a college program.

This is the first year that I voluntarily did not go to a game at Bloomington. And I’ve been through some bad coaches in my time.

I have no skin in this fight. I hope it’s a great game. But saying both teams pull starters out after half’s of most games is absolutely false. Just comparing scores tells me that can’t be true. GS yes, most were blowout wins and common sense says perhaps 3 of their 13 games required 4 quarters from the starters. Tri-West on the other hand had 4 close games and 2 losses which meant their starters absolutely played 4 quarters. And the regional against Owen Valley was decisive at 28-7, but I suspect starters played well into the 4th quarter in that one. That’s 7 out of 13 games. With no common opponents there is no way to say if that is an advantage or disadvantage to either team. But spinning it as a toss up with misleading information is perhaps disingenuous.

South was down 3 starters their starting qb(1000+ passing and a couple hundred rushing) rb(1000+ rushing) and best wr which all started the first game. Unsure whether south lost any more kids throughout season at other positions . Watching the game south really missed their offensive production . The d was on field too long this game was 14 14 in late 3rd q I believe. Souths d just got wore down and NA Was beneficiary of the short field during their late drives. The south offense was down to sophomore qb and rb and they couldn't get anything going. I realize NA Was down kids the first meeting this year but had south had those kids I feel the game would have tilted possibly the exact opposite score. By the way when na beat south last season it was south head coaches first game as bhss hc. Not to dismiss the w for na but takes a bit for Kids to changeover from a hall of fame coach that retired the year before.

But I submit, the majority of the football problems can be traced right back to the Athletics Director. Indiana has had some real Bozos.

NA lost the first game by 30 because they were missing 7 starters, including Myles Johnson who ran for 180 yards this game. I feel like they’re fairly even teams.They played last year and NA beat them by 12. NA has improved during the season. They seem to be loose and having fun. Maybe the “playing with house money” kinda attitude. I’m sure they know how challenging this game is…..but I’d bet they show up and play hard. All you can ask…and being competitive in this game is a big ask.

Any I can't imagine Lowell ever purchasing field turf. That picture is just the way they want the field to look for playoff football.

He's only a Junior. Were you expecting to see someone who is already a starting LB at ND?

Perhaps had they had school choice, things would have turned out better for them.

Curious if any of our legal types have listened to these proceedings? In listening to jury instructions this morning, the judge had three days to come up with jury instructions and he has stumbled and stuttered through this whole thing. I believe the trial is a sham, this prosecutor has clearly been pressured into charging this young man without having a real case. That being said, I’m also curious as to our legal guys take on the judge’s behavior during the trial?
